Photo Recovery in Time Machine - Need HELP !!!
Hello Everyone,
Problem - How do i recover back all my photos that's in my iPhoto application inside my Time Machine Backup ? Do i need to recover the whole system back from my Time Machine backup to get all my photos back ? It's Important for me. Thanks alot ! If I open iphoto in TimeMachine its Empty... = (
Open iPhoto then launch Time Machine. You should now be able to restore your pictures. If that doesn't work locate your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder and restore it from there.

Recovery with time machine needs over 1000 hours
I have a Macbook Air (Mid 2011, 128 GB SSD, 4GB RAM, Mountain Lion) and I wanted to recover the OS for testing purposes from my external hraddrive (500GB USB Gdrive). Now the recovery has started and it shows me a remaining time of more than 1000 hours. The value still increases. There was no need for recovery, I only wanted to check the functionality. backups were running without problems. Whats wrong now? Any suggestions?
I'm sorry I have no idea what you're asking; I don't know what you mean by 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? I bought the hard drive specifically for use with this Mac; I plugged it in & copied across around 58MB of files from the Mac hard drive with no problem; I did it in small parts but the total thing only took a few hours. I was then advised to do this 'total back-up', which is now taking several days to only back up 59MB. Why is life so complicatd with Macs?! I'm used to just plugging things in & they work, no fuss or bother.
I really would like to stop it now; but need some advice as to whether what has already been copied across over the past 28 hours will actually be on the HD, or will I have to start all over again? Second question; clearly it is easier to just drag & drop files across to the HD - this Time Machine thing is useless - but I am not totally sure which files it is copying. Would I just copy everything from 'My computer' / applications, etc? -
ALL Photos missing after Time Machine restore (help)
So, I accidently formated the wrong drive while in Windows, (big oops) which gave me the opportunity to take Time Machine for a test drive.
I put the DVD in, and was able to restore from the TIme Machine drive. Very impressed! Everything came back just as I had left it except - whats this? The default Leopard wallpaper instead of a picture of my son? Huh strange, I thought. Until I noticed I had no photos in iPhoto.
There seems to be reminents of photos in the iphoto database - the size is 1.3gb instead of the 7gb it used to be. But 0 photos in iPhoto 08.
I went into iPhoto and choose File/Browse Backups. I selected Nov 8th, which was the last day of my backup and showed all 7000+ photos, and clicked "Restore All". This brought up something odd - a 2nd iPhoto icon in the dock, which showed a progress bar for the restore. Once the restore was completed, I still had a 2nd iPhoto icon the the bar, which was iPhoto running - but no photos in iphoto! I exited the 2nd iphoto, which disappeared, and launched my normal Iphoto icon. Still no photos! (That just seems odd that it would launch iPhoto with a 2nd icon)
So, I moved my iphoto database, and launch iPhoto in order to create a fresh database - thinking maybe that was the issue. I then did File/Restore again, and went through the whole processes again, including the odd 2nd icon. Still, no photos! And another 1.3gb iphoto database!
Is it normal for a Time Machine restore to not include your photos? Surely you are not supposed to restore them separately from within Iphoto?
What do I do now? At this point, everything went very well - except no photos! Which is awful and not at all expected! 7000+ family photos! At least, if I ask iPhoto/Time Machine to restore 'all photos' you would think it would restore 'all photos' - not show a progress bar, and then show me no photos!
p.s. I just tooked at the iPhoto Library. The 1.3gb is in /Data/ which contains folders 2000-2007, my Events, and thumbnails of all the photos - but no actual photos (the 'Originals' folder is missing).
I then went back in time, and found the 8gb iPhoto Library database. I supposed I could copy it over manually via Time Machine, and not iPhoto's Restore/TM - but - i'm so far off track of how this should have went I don't know what to think!
p.s.s. So I did just that - copied the 8gb iPhoto Library manually from TM, and pasted it in place. I help down option, and launch iPhoto, selecting the 8gb library - and BOOM... no photos!
Something is #$%# up here.

Reverting to a previous Mac OS X version
If you’ve used Time Machine to back up your computer, you can easily revert to a previous version of Mac OS X if you’re experiencing trouble after installing an update.
IMPORTANT: Reverting to the previous version of Mac OS X will erase any additions or changes you’ve made to the files on your computer after installing the new version of Mac OS X. To save new or revised files, copy them onto a different disk or back them up using Time Machine before you follow these instructions. Use Time Machine only if you’re reverting to a previous version of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), since Time Machine is not available with Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
To revert to a previous version of Mac OS X:
Insert the disc you used to install the new version of Mac OS X, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System From Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you installed a new version of Mac OS X, choose the most recent backup.
Follow the onscreen instructions.
If you backed up any individual files as described under the Important message above, you can restore them now. If you backed them up using Time Machine, recover them using the Time Machine application. (You’ll find the Time Machine application in the Dock or in the Applications folder.)
Hope this helps

Time machine need Help (german)
Hallo Leute,
ich bin am Verzweifeln !
Es geht um folgendes:
ich hab mir einen 2013 iMac gekauft, davor hatte ich einen late 2011. So, da hat alles funktioniert. Beim 1. Start - TimeMachine ausgewählt, hat 2 Stunden gedauert. Fertig
So mein Problem:
Danke
Lg TomOK. I think you will find a solution here: How can I see my backups, or the backups for a different Mac?. Then use this one to restore your backup: How do I restore my entire system?.
I hope I understood you correctly.

Recently my MacBookPro locked up on startup. Could not get past a certain point of progress bar. I had upgraded to Yosemite few weeks back, with no issues. I ended up doing a Recovery with Time Machine and I got all my apps, photos, documents, etc. back okay --- except I got error messages that my "registration for Photoshop (I use CS4 Extended) and Photo Mechanic are no longer working". I worked on Photoshop first, and tried (several times) to fix it with their online help suggestions. Nothing worked.
Is there a simpler way to "get my licenses/registrations back"??? I am also going to contact Camera Bits about the Photo Mechanic issues. ThanksSame problem and for months now. I haven't been able to find a solution, but I suspect that's because I don't know exactly what's wrong.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
Cheers, Tom -
Safari quits unexpetedly on startup after having to do a "Recovery" from Time Machine backup
I had to do a "recovery" from Time Machine backup and since Safari will quit unexpectedly every time and I have to use Firefox.
The must do "recovery" came about because the system was hanging with the gearbox spinning and never starting up the system.
My system is: Mac Pro early 2008 running on OS X 10.9.4. Before the permanent hangs system as running very, very slow.
Any suggestions out there?Hope this is what you wanted to see:
How can I fix repetitive 'fontd' crashes after recovery from time machine backup?
After recovery from time machine backup (Disk Utility told me to reformat my internal hard drive) i got annoying repetitive prompts from crashing 'fontd'. How can I fix it? Anyone suffering from the same disease?
Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions. -
I've recently been having issues with my early 2008 black Macbook. I ran the apple HW diagnostics and determined it is a bad hard drive. I went out and bought a new 500GB SATA HD, and attempted to restore my system using a Time Machine backup. I booted into the Leopard Disc that came with my computer, formatted the drive, and ran the Time machine restore. Everything appeared to go fine (took about 2 hours, no error messages). However, after the machine rebooted and attempted to boot into OSX an error similar to this popped up. http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/7792/pict0017lo8.jpg
Any thoughts as to why this is happening? I don't really want to start over with a clean install, that's why I have Time Machine!
Other information:
My computer originally had Leopard, and was upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I have boot camp setup on my mac for Win 7. (I know this isn't backed up or restored as part of a time machine backup, which I'm O.K. with.)
Thanks in advance for all your help.Any number of possibilities. First, did you prep the drive properly:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Any brand new drive should be setup per the above because they usually are configured for use on PCs rather than Macs.
Second, depends on how you went about the process of restoring your system. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." Look for an article specifically about performing a full system restore. Also, see User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
What you saw was a kernel panic screen. Panics at startup may be indicative of a hardware problem. You might give this a try:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
To assure the problem isn't with your backup you might consider installing OS X by itself. If all is OK, then you can complete the TM restore using Migration Assistant. -
Restoring photo information from time machine
Somehow, iPhoto changed the title of all of my photos in a particular album to "1921". So, I need to restore those 279 modified photos that are in that photo album to get the correct title back. When I go to Time Machine and look at the photo album I see exactly what I want. However, when I click "restore", what gets imported is the original photo with the original file number as the title. That's worse than having the wrong title. Why isn't the modified photo imported?
I have lost about 75% of my photos from 2009 -- earlier years seem not to have been affected, and this year's photos are not affected.
Here's what happened: In an effort to free up space on my hard drive, I deleted a very large file called "recovered photos." In 2008, I backed up that file to DVDs, but had not thought that anything had been added to that file since then.
But after deleting that file, I immediately noticed that most of my 2009 photos were missing. The only explanation I can think of is that they were somehow stored in this old recovered photo file.
The last backup I ran on Time Machine was run on Feb. 14.
you should back up more regularly than that if you value your data.
I have never had to restore data from Time Machine so I am not sure how to do it. I have located the missing recovered photo file on Time Machine. Should I highlight that file and click restore? Or should I restore the entire pictures folder?
quit iphoto and restore the whole iphoto library in your Pictures folder. don't try restoring the Pictures folder itself. that won't work. yes, to restore it you click on TM in the dock, scroll back in time select iphoto library and hit "restore". say yes when it asks if you want to overwrite existing items.
I posted in the iPhoto forums two days ago, and I have tried the suggestions I received there to no avail. Following those suggestions, I rebuilt my iPhoto library using both iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager and neither action turned up the lost photos. I am posting here now because I think that restoring from Time Machine is my only chance of recovering those photos. -
HT1338 lost word document. time machine no help. suggestions?
lost word document. time machine no help. suggestions?
Need more info. How do you think you lost a Word Document?
Try Easy Find, Search program, and search for *.doc*. That will turn up all Word Docs with both the .DOC and .DOCX extension on your complete hard drive.
If it is truly lost, Deleted, then you are basically SOL. Unless you do have a recent TM backup that has that file included.
As for recovering it from TM do a search for Pondini TM FAQs. -
How do I unlock photos from my Time Machine back up?
I moved from a MacBook Pro 2010 to a new Macbook Pro (today), how do I unlock my photos from my Time Machine back up so I can use them on my new Pro? I have already recycled my old MacBook, and my Time Machine was backing up to an external. Please help! I can see the data in the back up, I just can't move the photos to my new computer to use them.
Hello MommaBruno,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains helpful advice concerning Time Machine:
unable to import or copy photos from a time machine back up saved from snow leopard into iPhoto now running on lion
The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need. Open your original library and import those photos. After that you can delete the recently restored library.
Time Machine needs "work space" after reinstall of Snow Leopard
Hey all,
I had to completely nuke my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard after my hard drive got corrupted and my MacBook wouldn't boot up. I restored my system from my Time Machine backup, and after installing all updates, everything on the system seems all hunkey-dorey.
Except for Time Machine. Whenever TM tries to do a backup, it tells me that it needs 250GB of storage for a backup - as if it's completely ignoring all my old backups. I'd prefer not to wipe my external drive, so if there's a way to get TM to work again without a wipe, I'd love to hear it, but I suppose if I have to, I have to.
One more thing, according to the Time Machine Buddy widget, TM detects that it has a migration, but the UUID doesn't match. Here's the full log.
Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive? While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean! When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message: "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"
Thanks so much Terence. I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm. I really appreciate it.
