Photo recovery when iPhoto crashed while deleting imported images
I was importing images into iPhoto when it finished and asked if I wanted to delete originals or not. I chose to delete originals. As it was finishing the import/deleting the images, iPhoto crashed. I could see the images right before the crash. Upon rebooting iPhoto, the images were gone from my card and not showing up under last import. Where can I find them??? Thanks!
Greetings,
Sorry to hear about the lost pictures.
My guess would be that there was something wrong with the import process (bad data / corrupt media card in camera, low battery power during import, bad connection with camera, etc.)
Try finding the images on the computer using the File > Find in the Finder as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1995 (maybe they just got misplaced / not fully imported into iPhoto).
Use the picture in that article as an example. Rather than having "Kind" "Any". Choose "Kind" "Image". This will locate any picture at all on your computer. You can then copy and paste the images (if you can find them) into a new folder and then import that folder into iPhoto.
If you haven't used the camera since you deleted the pictures there is a good chance you can recover them from the camera using data recovery software.
Here are a few examples:
http://joesoft.com/products/klix.php
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/
http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products _id=1
You can contact a local Apple Authorized Provider to see if they offer data recovery services: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
There are many nationwide / worldwide data recovery companies out there. Here are a few examples:
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com
http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/
http://www.totalrecall.com/
Consider using these best practice tips to avoid or minimize the impact of issues in the future:
Do not delete the images off your camera until you have imported your images to the image management program of your choice (like iPhoto), and then backed up your images (like with TimeMachine)
Reformat the camera's media card using the camera itself between uses (check your camera's manual for how to do this).
Ensure your camera has a full charge on the battery before you import (Or run off of AC if possible).
Ensure the date and time on the camera are correct before importing.
If you are using a media card reader and are getting regular failures, try using a different reader or the camera itself (The same is true about importing directly from the camera. Try a reader instead.)
Plug the camera directly into the computer with a solid connection, no loose cables. Don't use a hub.
Alternate between multiple media cards during photo shoots (trips, etc) so that if one card goes bad (they are just little bits of plastic after all) you don't lose the entire shoot.
Best of luck to you.

I just tried to import photos form my iPhone 4 to iPhoto...it seemed to get all the way to the end and then iPhoto wasn't responding in the
"finishing import" stage. I had already chosen (for the first time ever because I didn't trust it) to delete the photos from my phone. I seems to have imported some (though I can't find them) and deleted them from my iphone...so the import wasn't complete but there are photos missing from both my comp
and the phone. CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND THEM? I restarted my computer and then launched iPhoto holding down command and option buttons and chose to "rebuild library from automatic backup". I still can't find them.
help?hi rosanne,
may i know where to find the modified folder? i have the same problem, unbelievable!
Thanks! -
First i imported my photos to iphoto 8.1.2 when it finished, asked me if i want to "delete them from the camara" i clicked yes and crashed while deleting photos (7,000) from my iphone and the photos disappeared from iphone and iphoto
No early version of iPhoto can open a Library from a later version.
You can try revert the Library with iPhoto Library Manager

Rescue and Recovery Crashes While Deleting Backup Files
I've seen many threads in regards to Rescue and Recovery crashing while deleting backup files, but no solutions were ever mentioned! I have a T400 (Vista SP2, Intel T9400, 4GB RAM, 300 GB HD) and was quickly running out of disk space. After finding mention of Rescue and Recovery I was able to delete some of the backups but not all. For example I have one from 2008 (18GB) but it won't seem to delete. I let it sit for quite a while (over night) but it still didn't delete. Does anybody have a solution for how to get R&R to delete this files? Or how to delete these files manually? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
in this situation I assume, you are using the GUI for the deletiong of the RnR Backups.
What I always prefer is the rrcmd.exe which you can use with the "delete" whicht so that the backups that you want to will be deleted.
Cheers -
Iphoto no longer deletes the images from iPhone 5s after import.
I have the latest version of IOS, and iPhoto. Now, when I connect my iPhone 5s and import the photos and select the delete all that was imported option the photos on the iPhone are NOT deleted.
Everything is stock apple software. Not jail broken, or any sketchy software installed. All updates are installed immediately. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Ben.The short answer:
You're wrong. Either the software is malfunctioning and is suffering from a critic bug, or the Hardware is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. Everything is under warranty so it doesn't really matter which one it is as long as the issue is resolved.
I just want to find out how many other users are experiencing this issue and help narrow it down before I report it to Apple.
The long answer:
Hi,
I'm a CSEE engineer with with a background in QE/QA. It's literally my job to define exactly what a piece of software and hardware products is supposed to do.
I validate the design of products, and verify the functionality of the product. For the record I do not work for Apple, and my employer is not affiliated with Apple in any way. Your answer blew me away! LOL.
Wow. Where to start? Any answer is not better than none.
Your answer is completely wrong and it's dangerous because your kind of answer will discourage regular people from asking questions on this forum. It sounds like it's coming form a professional and it sounds decisive, definitive, and final. Almost like an edict! LOL. Unfortunately it's also completely incorrect. That's the only reason I felt compelled to respond to your response.
Saying:
Terence Devlin wrote:
Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card or Phone. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then erase the data.
is a ridiculous answer.
I am saying that as both an engineer with an extensive experience in QA/QE, as well as a lay person who prefers to to use Apple products. Software and hardware should perform as designed and as expected. Apple software and hardware usually does exactly that. When it doesn't it gets fixed very quickly as long as it's reported.
You' don't trust Apple software and hardware to behave as expected? Why buy Apple then if you have such a low opinion of the reliability, design, and quality assurance of their products? It's the most expensive hardware in the market in it's class; so it's definitely not the "bargain" factor.
I buy Apple products because they perform as expected, have a superior intuative user interface, and it is all backed by solid customer service. This is the first time in years that I've had to deal with such a glaring malfunction. Somehow in jumping from Mavericks to YosemiteI, and IOS 7.x to IOS 8.x somehow the ball got dropped and I just want to know if this is a "one in a million case," or is it a more common bug before I report it to Apple. Either way it will be reported.
I am using two Apple products together and using Apple branded software designed specifically for those products on top of that. It's a MacBook pro, an iPhone 5s, and I'm using Apple's iPhoto as the interface. You actually said:
Terence Devlin wrote:
... Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card or Phone. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then erase the data.
2. You can erase the photos from your Phone with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder)
So first you say specifically to "never use iPhoto to delete photos." An app that was specifically designed by Apple for this purpose. Then you up the ante and and add "or any other app." But then step 2 you reverse yourself completely and say "use image capture" to erase photos. Why trust one Apple software, And distrust another? Why not trust the one designed for the purpose? Is it an article of faith? LOL.
I don't know if you ever noticed this; but, when you connect your iPhone to your MacBook, OSX automatically launches iPhoto as the de facto standard app for dealing with imports and deleting images from your iPhone. Yes you can customize that; but, the default factory standard is iPhoto. This has been the case for years, and it has worked flawlessly until now.
To advise people to not trust the app designed by Apple for Apple Products to do the work it was designed to do is funny to say the least.
The expected behavior of iPhoto is that imported images to the MacBook should be deleted when I tell the software to delete images. When the software tells me that it is deleting images and then I find out that it did not; that is a bug, and critical one at that. Major software functionality is being affected and the software is not behaving as designed, advertised, or expected.
I verified the bug by:
1- Saying no to the delete option at import time,
2- verified that the images have been imported.
3- disconnected and reconnected the iPhone.
4- When iPhoto informs me that all images have already been imported. I choose the option to delete images that have already been imported.
5- IPhoto still fails to delete the images.
I'm able to reproduce this bug 100% of the time. I want to know if others are experiencing this behavior.
Where did you ever get the idea that malfunctioning software, or software that is not performing according to design is a "Good" thing or that a bug is not a bug; but, a desirable feature?
From a lay person's perspective, the dialog box box in the iPhoto "import" function clearly states that import was successful, and asks if the user wishes to delete the photos that have been already imported. This is the way iPhoto has always worked ever since my iPhone 3gs days.
The fact that the iPhotos app asks if you want want the pictures that were just imported DELETED from your iPhone means the expected software and hardware behavior is that the photos that were already imported should be deleted and the storage freed for others uses. Having to use third-party software is not a real workaround or even desirable. There is something wrong with either the iPhone hardware, iPhoto software, OS X Yosemite, Or IOS 8.1.2. Any one of these issues is important enough that it should be looked at.
I need to zero in on the cause, and have Apple fix it. It could hardware or software issue. It could be just me, or hundreds, or thousands of people. Everything I have is under warranty so the repair is free and it is expected. I have been able to consistently reproduce this error and I want to know how widespread this problem is.
The reason I buy Apple products at a higher premium instead of alternative brands such as Samsung, or Sony, or LG is the Apple reliability and user experience. If as a user I don't report a bug; then over the long-term, that reliability and user experience is going to degrade. I'm not investigating this as an "Apple" hater; but, as a supporter and an enthusiast. Finding out how widespread the problem is would help Apple out. When I'm on the solving end of this kind of an equation; I know I would appreciate all the information that I can get.
On a more personal level, this bug has already negatively affected my user experience. Recently we were visiting a national Park, I took hundreds of pictures, dozens of videos, and I dutifully imported them into my laptop that night and I elected to delete what has been imported. I assumed that when iPhoto reported the pictures were deleted; that this was indeed the case. The next day we went to another national Park and only a third through the day my iPhone 5s reported that there was no more storage. I then had to then manually delete over 900 photos and videos.
There is no batch delete in the iPhone "Photos" user app interface. I had to go into the iPhone "Photos" select menu, scroll through hundreds of photos. Find where I had imported the day before, and then delete well over 900 photos and videos manually by individually selecting each one and then clicking delete. It took over an hour.
Yes, in the select dialog box you can select the multiple images and then click delete once; But, on a moving boat with all sorts of distractions this little exercise took an exceedingly long time. It also took my attention away from my family for well over an hour. I didn't see anything that I now can remember during that time and I couldn't interact with my family the way they deserved. I have no memories of that boat trip either in my brain, or on my camera because I was busy deleting. It wasn't by choice, I had to either do the deleting right then, or miss the show that was after the boat ride. I chose the lesser of two evils.
The point of my little story is, that the boat ride with my family is an irrecoverable moment in time that is forever lost. It wasn't life-and-death, but it was precious and it is gone forever. There is no way to recover it. There are no time machines. This simple bug, or hardware malfunction was the cause, and I want to make sure it doesn't happen to me, or anyone ever again. That was the first time I experienced the bug. Since then it has been the rule and not the exception.

I just installed Aperture 3 from a CD. i also imported my photos from my Iphoto library. After importing most of the photos imported are blurry and it tells me the program is "processing" and it never stops. What do I do?

After importing images from my card using LR 5.4, the GPS data does not show in the metadata panel. However, when I look at the imported images using Bridge, the GPS data is visible. Anybody know why LR is not seeing the GPS data? Camera is Canon 6D.
Ok, the issue seem to be solved. The problem was this:
The many hundred files (raw and xmp per image) have been downloaded by ftp in no specific order. Means - a couple of files in the download queue - both raw and xmps. Most of the time, the small xmp files have been finished loading first and hence the "last change date" of these xmp files was OLDER than the "last change date" of the raw file - Lightroom then seem to ignore the existence of the xmp file and does not read it during import.(a minute is enough to run into the problem)
By simply using the ftp client in a way that all large raw files get downloaded first followed by the xmp files, we achieved that all "last changed dates" of the xmp files are NEWER than the related raw files. (at least not older)
And then LR is reading them and all metadata information has been set / read correctly.
So this is solved. -
Hi guys, I was importing about 5000 photos from my phone onto my computer. it said the import was successful but did i want to delete or keep the photos on the original device. I opted to delete photos. The photos started to count down as they deleted and the computer said "finishing import". Once it had deleted down to about 600 photos iphoto simply disappeared, and a message popped up to say it had crashed. I opted to reopen iphoto and saw that not one of the photos had imported! Not only that but now all the photos have been deleted from my phone. I'm really upset if i've lost the last year of photos/ videos....does anyone know what has happened/ if i can recover them?
thanks so much in advance xNot sure where you got those ideas - simply import your photos and keep the rather than deleting - then after a successful import and at least one back up cycle you can format the card if you want or you can do what I do and keep the photos moving to a new card when that one is full giving you yet another backup - if problems occurs then trouble shoot them - no need to trouble shoot if there is no problem
ad personally I find removing the card and plugging it into my card reader is faster and easier than finding the USB cable and hooking it up, turning on the camera, verifying that tty e battery is charged, etc - and it eliminates a point of failure in the USB cable and the chance of the camera battery running out - but that is clearly a personal choice
You are overthinking this - it is simple
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card -- I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

IPhoto crashing while importing photos
I have a Canon PowerShot SD1200. I've had a couple of minor issues since I got it, just at Christmas, but they seemed to resolve themselves. Now, iPhoto just won't import the photos that are on the camera - it crashes partway through the import process. I've had a couple of other cameras that I haven't had any trouble with. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks for the tip about Image Capture. I didn't know about it. When I downloaded using it, I discovered that there are some .avi files in there as well, which iPhoto obviously isn't dealing with very well. For some reason, my camera is not showing up as a drive or directory when it's plugged in, so I couldn't tell that before.
Cannon for some reason chooses not to have their camera mount to the desktop the way that most others do
I don't know the camera format command, but maybe I don't need it now.
It is documented in your camera manual and it is a good idea to use it regularly - the best work flow is to use a USB card reader, not ever have Photo delete your photos and after downloading the photos and fully testing them in iPhoto (and I wait for at least one backup cycle) then use the camera to format the card - this deletes the photos and renews the card format
The next best is to import from the camera and not delete - use the camera format command after testing (and backing up)

IPhoto crashed while importing photos
While importing photos, iPhoto crashed. Now the pictures are damaged. Is there a possibility to regain them or salvage them?
I recovered the pictures in "Today" but they are damaged. You see the pictures in iPhoto but they are very small and there is no information about the picture availabe (shuttertime, diafragma etc).
Those are not your photos, only the thumbnails used for display.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Lost photos when iphoto crashed during import
I downloaded 92 photos from my camera to iphoto 7.1.5, I deleted the photos on the camera at prompt, iphoto then crashed, and the imported photos did not appear in iphoto. The previous import shows up as the latest import.
You can recover the files from the camera with an app like MediaRecover

IPhoto crashes while importing photos
Just came back from vacation, and iPhoto won't load the photos! It starts to do so, then crashes. Have tried Disk Utility repair and verify, no luck. All other applications closed. Would appreciate some help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What type of files are the photos and where are you attempting to import from, a camera or from the HD?
Have you tried rebuilding the library?
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto crashes after deleting files
I import my photo's from 8mg pixel cam, delete files empty trash in iPhoto, quit the app reluanch it and the import is the same size the deleted photos are still in the film roll but when you try to display them there is a white image. it seems to be worse when I crop images and delete then the app crashs with the same results.

Photo stream causing iphoto crash
Hi,
maybe somebody here will be able to help me as I am going crazy with it.
everything used to work fine, it didn't happen after any update, as far as I can tell, simply one day my iphoto crashed and it keeps crashing after few seconds after launch ever since. one thing that 'helps', though it is not really a solution, is turning off photo stream. with that off it works fine. as I need iphoto solely for photo stream, it doesn't really get me anywhere.
I followed some wisdom found on the net that this behaviour is caused by some 3ivx codec, but removing all components of that didn't change matters one bit. I've also deleted the library, the plist files, created new libraries, rebuileded permissions and did everything else, including reinstalling the software itself, all to no avail.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this.is this enough?
