Photo resolution in InDesign 6

I am just learning InDesign, but I'm pretty good in Photoshop. I want to design a form  on which we can display (on letttersize paper) our photo collection. The form will have various bits of information and, most importantly, the photo.
Is it possible to display the photo (usually smaller than the actual photo) such that I can link to the original at its 300 resolution in its original location in order to print it out for patrons.?
In general, how do you deal with resolution in InDesign?

Posts in the online help wind up in the forums as well. I answered the first one, so I'll lock this one.

ALSO, on the iPod under Settings>General>iTunes Sync, you may need to back out of the "iTunes Wi-fi Sync," and reopen it to get it to update.

  • Photo resolution on iweb

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with original file size?

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution
on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with
    original file size?
Yes, you can. Not sure why you would want to do this. Web images tend to have to balance image quality with download speed. But sure, you can have your original photo used in iWeb. Just drag it from iPhoto directly into iWeb. Then open up the Inspector and click on the Rulers tab. The click "Use original size". That will be your original photo.
If you make any other changes to your photo like shrinking it down to a little square or rotating it or putting a frame around it, then iWeb will convert your photo to a PNG file and subsequently recompress the image for the PNG file. That will again lower your resolution.

  • Lumia 820 Photo Resolution Problem

    Hi,
Can anyone help me solve why i cannot change the photo resolution on my Lumia 820?
When i check them on a PC they always come out at either 800x600 on 4:3 ratio or 800x450 on 16:9 ratio.
It's driving me mad there is no option in the photo settings or anywhere else in the phone to change this.
I read on another post that it can be related to skydrive uploading, although I have skydrive disabled and this problem still persists.
    Please Help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

How did you download the photos to your pc? Photos uploaded to Skydrive are reduced in resolution by default unless you change the setting to Best Quality which requires wifi. To change this, goto Settings>Applications>photos+camera>Skydrive>Photos> Best quality
Other option to download high res is to connect phone to pc using USB.

  • Nokia Lumia 820 change photo resolution

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me why can't I change the resolution in the photo camera? If I choose video I can select resolution, but on photo I cannot, there is no option. This is not ok, my phone took the last photos both in landscape and portrait at 1280x720 / 720x1280 resolution. If it has 8mpx why can't I benefit from this res?? who from Nokia had this brilliant idea of taking out the option to select the photo resolution???

I presume you are uploading your photos to Skydrive. The phone automatically reduces the resolution before photos are uploaded. To dwnload your photos at full resolution you need to either connect to pc via usb or change the auto upload settings as follows. Goto settings>backup>photos>best quality (needs wifi)

  • Photo Coversion for Indesign ?

I am a photographer using LR and photoshop and wanting to know the best workflow when preparing photos for a Indesign brouchure - I am using a new  external designer to produce these but use my own printer so have been able to correct some of the minor colour issues. I know Indesign allows use of both CMKY and RGB - designer is requesting me to convert Photos to CMYK JPEG which i can do but in the past never done it this way - have always provided resized PSD file and final conversion done by designer. Are there issues doing it this way or is this ok.

John , thanks for comments and communication i have thick skin so not easily offended and its always difficult to communciate everything in this manner. For your info I have a Epson 4900 ( no rip considering buying ) I print using Epson paper only usually luster , semi gloss some tradional all using correct epson driver , I use some other brand canvas and testured papaer but not often. I have a good workflow , everything calibrated and use lightroom for printing primarily- I know you dont use it but it has a great print module and providing you use the correct colpur profiles , paper , ink etc has a excellent result with the ability to add sharpening , brightness and sharpening at the end . I am pretty much able to get a greast result first print. All my files are raw 16bit so exporting to Photoshop as AdobeRGB or whatever is easy so far your suggestion of using AdobeRGB rather tahn PROphoto is proving to be better option.
I understand now the print proof process and know i can use external source for this but also believe given above i can get a reasonable proof from my system using above and the 300gsm tradional paper which is similar to what external printer is using. I printed a DL flyer over weekend last and it looks great so realworld test. I now have correct  CMYK profile from my printer.
Now my designer has prepared in indesign a new DL flyer in fact there are 6 ( printing option ) of them all slightly different ( they are gift promotional vouchures or similar?   A couple have identical backs and all have 4 photos on  front  around 3.5 x 1.75 inches some more some less. I might add the photos are complexe and resizing bleed etc all critical . It is at this point after some colour errors in a previous job my designer says , hey I want CMYK files as jpegs please . Not knowing  the Indesign process this is where i started out communciating in my first post. Now i know she is using the wrong CMYK profile ( she told me swop 2 always works ok for her ) and isnt open to learning like me
and i think she feels i am too fussy. I had hoped to resize photos give to her and get artwork and wanted to communciate all i have learned .I think she has no ownership in job just wants to make sure she is not responcible for any errors.
I figure now its easy for me to get the Indesign file from her what is the file type i need to get ? is it a EPS  LAYERED  ? and do my self or have someelse do under my instruction. In any case this job has been on hold for a week so need to action something.
One final thing - should i consider learning indesign myself - I dont do a lot of printing other than photos and photo books which are all done via Lightroom ) it has a book module ) so never felf it was worth while investing time in this - which i have less of ?

  • Photo resolution & movies?!

So, I'm confused. I can create a very nice page, but there are a couple things that I can't figure out:
    1. Photo resolution. My photos seem to automatically downsample (the large version) to 800x600. That's great if I want them to, but what if I don't?!
-related: is it possible to link a file? ie "add link to download"?
    2. Movies cannot be put on a photo grid. That *****. I take pictures and movies with my digital camera, and I want to show both in a gallery.
    3. It's unclear to me how updating works. That is, if I publish to a folder, and I update a page or add a new one, do I have to do everything again? ie publish to folder and upload the entire thing? That seems like quite a waste of bandwidth!

  • Photo resolution on new computer

I have noticed that the photo resolution on my new system is much smaller than on my old G4 iBook. The original size of the photos was in 1-2 meg size with great resolution. Now they are 40-50K. When I export them to a digital photo frame they are really poor. What have I done wrong?

    Yes
Quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (after completing everything successfully you will delete this library) and connect the two computers (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder form the old machine to the same place in the new machine (a single drag - do not move pieces of the library) and launch iPhoto on the new machine - you should be fine - and once you are trash the bad iPhoto library from the desktop

  • IDVD slideshow photo resolution

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
From previous posts, it seems that iDVD photo resolution is always less than viewing a iPhoto slideshow while in that application.
    So here is my question:
When I use the option of sharing the photos, iDVD creates a "slideshow" folder with the photos in .JPG,on the DVD. If I copy the folder to my desktop, open, then the resolution is great when viewing on my G5. So if the iDVD app and my verbatim media can create/support these images, why is the iDVD slideshow resolution so poopy?

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

OK, but why so lousy even when viewing the DVD using
    my G5?
An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixel
    resolution
    - you computer monitor has more than 4 times this
    resolution.
You are looking at an image with less than 640x480 pixel quality displayed on a much larger pixel count monitor.
Sorry, but what you see is what you get.
DVDs produced by iDVD are best viewed on a TV set. If you are viewing them on a computer - DO NOT set the playback display to 'Full Screen' - use 'Normal' size (which will display the video in a 640x480 window).

  • Acceptable and Quality Still Photo Resolution for HDV Documentary

I've scanned through several pages of posts on photo resolution here, but I haven't actually found a simple answer to a beginner's question. Two, actually:
    1. If someone is supplying you with still photo prints for scanning and use in a documentary (shot in HDV, edited on FCP5), is there a particular size print that you should ask for? Does the broadcast venue (theatrical, TV, etc.) have any relevance?
    2. If someone is scanning photos and sending you a CD with them, what are the specs (size, resolution, etc.) you should ask for? And are there "minimum acceptable" specs and "preferred, high quality" specs?
    Thanks.

Having worked on several long-form historical docos with hundreds of source photo scans, I'd highly recommend getting the originals in as high a resolution as you can (at least 300 DPI), and getting the entire photo scanned. You just never know when you need to apply pans or zooms or crop into a particular area to improve the edit, and there are many simple ways to prep the selected photos for import.
The simplest is just to do the scaling & cropping in FCP. It will do a fine job of this, but if it turns out most of the photos will be static, you can waste computer resources by importing unnecessarily-large images. As mooblie pointed out, you strictly only need enough resolution to prevent scaling up past 100%, as this will create pixelated lower quality output.
The most common way to prep scans is in Photoshop, where you can scale the image to a desired pixel size very easily. I'd still leave the image at its natural frame size (as scanned), so you have the most creative choice when you are framing it in the timeline using FCPs cropping & motion tabs tools.
If you've got lots of photos and lots of pans & zooms, consider using one of the third-party tools that will help with this, such as Photo to Movie from LQ Graphics, Moving Picture from StageTools, or even the plugin for FCP I wrote to help with the docos I mentioned above. It's called Pan Zoom Pro and you can see about it and download a demo here: http://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/index.htm#pzp .

  • How do I make sure the photos in my InDesign files are at a high resolution when I send those files to a coworker? (Keeping them as .indd)

I am leaving my job and we have been uploading all of my InDesign files onto Google Drive to prepare, so that my boss/coworkers can use and access my work. My boss has found that he can't download the files without the photos in the documents turning out super low-res. It's not just the display on his computer (although they do LOOK really awful); they also print in really low-res. I can print and view the SAME files in high-res when I'm working on my computer, and when I export the documents into a PDF, PNG, JPEG, etc., and THEN give him the files, they are at the appropriate resolution. Which has been all fine and dandy, but... Since I'm the only designer on staff, and I am leaving, I am going to need to be able to hand off my documents to my boss/coworkers. Help?!?!?! Thanks!

If you go to Window>Output>Preflight. It will show you what you are missing in your files.
You can also go to Window>Links. Find the picture in question and it will give you a status (?) if you are missing any image. At the bottom of that same Links panel you will see tiny icons that say Relink, Go to Link, Update, you can replace or find any that are missing.
To find out if your images are high res for print, you can go to Window>Info and select the pictures in question. It will give you an effect ppi when you click on your picture. If it's not at least 300 it's not high res.
After you fix all that, then package the file.

  • Photos blurry in InDesign

    Hello,
I am new to Indesign and trying to create a documents with a few photos in them.  When I photoshop my image in photoshop the image will look fine but when i place it in Indesign it is blurry and choppy. I have checked my setting and everything is set to high quality.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

89 x 126 means you scaled it unevenly, and 89 is a pretty low resolution, so it's very likely the source of the problem. Your pixels are being rendered large enough to pick them out with the naked eye.
In photoshop youare viewing the actual image pixels, and waht you see on screen is not affected by the resolution you choose to save at as long as you don't resample. In ID you are looking at those same pixels (well, a screen preview of the pixels, really), but now you've defined a physical size for the image, and the larger you make the image the bigger the pixles must be rendered, like blowing up a balloon with printing on it. No new pixels are added, they just get expanded or compressed as you scale.

  • Photo Resolution for Ad

    I am creating an ad.
The magazine specs: Heatset, saddle stitched, 45 lb. Web offset enamel,
    200 lpi.
    All files should output to: minimum 150 lpi / 300 dpi;
    maximum 200 lpi / 400 dpi.
I am planning on making my photo just 300 resolution in Photoshop like I normally do for print work. Is this correct?
    Thanks for your help!

THANK YOU!! You just offered me so much information!
I am going to layout my ad in InDesign. Since I have a PC, they said to provide a 'high resolution' PDF. Should I go through the process you listed above of what exactly they mean? There are so many settings in a PDF these days.
    Thanks.
