Photo's not opening in Aperture

I have iPhoto, Aperture, Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements on my computer. When I click on any file on my desktop (I shoot my photos' in RAW format) it opens them all in Photoshop Elements. I'd rather they open in Aperture, how do I set that up. Oh and just as an FYI none of them were edited in Photoshop Elements, most were done in Aperture alone, a few in the full Photoshop. So why are they all opening in Elements?

Well being new to both Aperture and Photoshop I have a lot to learn especially about Aperture. I set up Photoshop to be the external editor with Aperture so now when I go to "photo" then "edit in Photoshop CS5" in Aperture it opens photoshop and makes a copy of the master photo correct? When I save it where will it be?
When you save in PS the file will come back into Aperture as a new master with the file extension you selected in preferences (see next response)
And lastly when I set up Photoshop to be the external editor it gave me a choice of how to work on it .tiff or .psd.. Can't I edit it in RAW in photoshop? If not which format is "better"?
'Better' is fairly subjective. Both have pluses and minuses. What will you do with the files after working on them in PS? As for editing in RAW, that isn't possible if you're going from Aperture to PS. Aperture doesn't make the RAW file available in this way. Part of the non-destructive editing philosophy.

PSS - lastly since I have a lot to learn about Aperture and for the most part I'm a visual learner.. should I just watch all the Aperture videos or is there some book that is good?
The Apple videos are a good place to start. There are a number of web sites that have Aperture related material, a google search of the web or a search of this discussion list will turn up many.
As for books I highly recommend the +Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 3+ book by Scoppettuolo. Comes with a CD with an Aperture library and image files and goes step by step through the data management , image adjusting and image sharing aspects of Aperture.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2. (424).   Today a few photos will not open.  I can see them as thumbnails but when I  try to open them they start to open and then a big ! mark appears.  I have not had this problem before.  Can you help

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Hi all.
    Now everything is in order.
I had an upgrade of Aperture. It deleted a main folder called "All photos". Luckily I had saved the library to an extra hard drive. Imported the back and everything in order.

  • Photo Gallery not opening

<< Branched from an old discussion about photo gallery not opening >>
I had a similar problem, only it was because i was in the phone deleting files that i thought i didnt want. UGH! I think mine was due to facebook and not syncing. My gallery would work, but the widget on the homescreen seemed frozen and when i tried to look at picture thru it, it said there was an error.
I deleted facebook and then installed it again, somehow, getting better updates. I also took the widget off the homescreen for a little bit. After a reboot of the cellphone, and an update of facebook and new SYNCS, suddenly it is working again as it once did.
I did NOT want to do a hard reset, it took along time to tweak my settings as i wanted them, so i opted out of it.
Hopefully you have better luck than i did. It took me like a week to figure houw i was going to go around doing a hard reset.

sorry, i forgot to say my firmware version is v3.0638.0.0.1

  • Photos do not open in Photoshop Elements 10 when opened from Photoshop Lightroom 3

I am trying to edit photos using the external editor option in Photoshop Lightroom 3, using Photoshop Elements 10 as the external editor.
I installed Photoshop Elements 10 about the 13th May 2012.
Photoshop Elements loads correctly but the photos do not open. I have followed the help video to make sure that I have set it up correctly.
This was working with Photoshop Elements 8.
I am using an iMac 21.5" with Snow Leopard.

The odds are you chose the logical file rather than the correct file as your external editor:

  • Photo does not open in Photoshop as before from Iphoto

I have a large library with approx 9700 pics. In the past, I was able to double click on a photo in Iphoto and it would open Photoshop CS (PS). PS opens but the chosen photo does not open. I have also noticed that all of the albums in Iphoto are not seen in the PS file browser and that the photos are in numbered folders that I did not create.
    thanks for any help.
    joel wilman

    Hi jwilman,
    To answer your first question:
You must have done an Archive and Install and the Scripting folder for PS did not get put back where it belonged. You must find that folder and put it back in the root library. or reinstall PS to get the folder.
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here.
    To answer your second question:
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Photo will not open to edit...get a triangle error

photo will not open to edit...get a triangle error

This indicates a disconnect between the Thumbnail and the original
this can be caused by two things
1 - User action deleting items from inside the iPhoto  library - can be directly - can be from the All images list (never delete from there) - can be from running cleanup software like MacKeeer, CleanMac2  or other dangerous, defective software that improperly deletes or changes things in the to library - if you have done any of these things you must restore your backup from before you ran them and damaged your iPhoto library - and I recommend getting rid of them ASAP (although being essentially MalWear it is not easy)
2 - corruption of the iPhoto library - IIf it is not #1 then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your database

  • To to get new Photos to not open automatically when I plug in iphone/ipad

    Hi,
Photos is probably better than iPhoto for personal images, BUT:
I need to make the new Photos app not open automatically every time I plug in an iPhone or iPad or camera into the computer.
I take a lot of photos for work and I import those through the Image Capture App which allows me to import photos into a specific set folder - not my photos folder.
Also, related, how do I make iTunes not automatically open when I plug in the iphone/ipad.  I keep my music on one computer and not on my work computer, so it is annoying when I plug an iPhone or iPad into the work computer and it automatically opens iTunes.
Finally, what happened to the delete function on the Image Capture app?  It was so easy - import a bunch of photos into a certain folder, then delete those photos off the device through Image Capture.
Apple, by forcing us to use your consumer products, you are making it so inconvenient for pros who want more control over our process and file structure!

In iTunes (with the device pugged in) Preferences, disable the 'Open iTunes when device is plugged in' option.

We are just Apple users (like you), we did not do anything. (Including forcing you, nobody did that)
Perhaps you would like to complain to Apple instead of us?  Send Feedback to Apple here.

  • I photo will not open on I mac

i photo will not open on i mac

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
