Photo Scanner Recommendations

This has probably been discussed many times in the past, but I cannot locate a thread at present. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a small scanner dedicated to photographs, perhaps with a feeder. I'd like to scan our photo library, but the flatbed route is so tedious....
Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any small, auto-feed scanners but my Canon 8600F scanner will scan multiple photos on the scanner bed and automatically separate and save each to it's own file. Most Canon scanners can do that. That model is no longer available. I got it because it was an optical scanner instead of and led type. Also because it also scans negative strips and slides. Take a look at the various scanners available at the Canon site. The software that it uses for multiple photos on one scan is CanoScan. Saved me a lot of time as I could do 3 4x6s or 5 3.5 x 5s at a time.
I would imaging the other scanner manufacturers would have similar software capability but don't know that for certain.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can anyone recommend a GOOD film/photo scanner??? ANYONE???

I need to purchase a good film/photo scanner to scan tons of old 35mm negatives and want to be able to scan prints also. Need compatible with Tiger 10.4.7. Have zillions of old negatives to scan so that is the main purpose. What is the best quality, easiest and most reliable film/photo scanner you recommend? I've been looking at the cannon Canoscan 9950F...anyone have any experience with this scanner? Have heard HP software is bad...Can anyone offer any advise as to what type of equipment you would recommend for my needs? I appreciate all your help!!!!! Gary

    Hello, Edward,
I have an Epson Perfection 2480 and it has been great for scanning my old photos....haven't done slides yet.
However, I was interested in how many photos you have scanned in the past 3 years because I have probably scanned in over 5000 photos. I think the scanner may have reached its limitation. I have begun to notice some fine lines down some of my scanned photos.
I had this happen with my previous HP scanner. The HP had one of those flat wide ribbons that moved under the glass and after about 8000 photos scans, the ribbon track seemed to be burned into the glass and would show up faintly on each scan.
So, I opted for the Epson. When I told someone at the store that I had scanned over 8000 photos on the HP, he said he'd never heard of anyone scanning that many photos! I cannot find any information regarding what might be the limit for scanning.
    So, just asking your opinion.....!

  • Can anyone recommend a dedicated photo scanner

I purchased an Epson Perfection V300 Photo scanner (dedicated scanner not a 3 in one. )  I have to use Image capture and the scanned images are not sharp.
My feeling is to return it and get another scanner.  Is there a scanner that I can use and not have to go thru Image capture?
    Thanks

  • Best photo scanner/printers and camcorders for MacBooks using iPhoto and iMovie

I have been trying to scan slides, first to my husband's MacBook (running 10.6.8 - our older laptop) and also to my MacBook (running 10.8.2).  Before upgrading to the newer OSs, I did this successfully a number of years ago.  I have been using my Epson Photo Stylus RX600 with it's slide template, but it scans the slides as they look in the template, not as actual photos.  I've tried searching for solutions and have read the manual carefully, but the screens I should be seeing on my MacBook are not coming up as they used to.  I fear the scanner/printer is just not compatible with the OS systems beyond Tiger.  If you have had similar problems, do you have a solution.  If this really is an incompatibility issue, what photo scanner/printers would you recommend?  I have over 5000 slides to digitalize.  I am also wanting to get a camcorder with the following features:  HD (1080i), 10 X zoom or greater, low light performance, manual exposure and focus controls, an articulating LCD screen, HDMI port, USB, and perhaps a built-in hd but SD memory too -- for under $1000.  Any recommendations?

Epson does have updates for the RX600 to run under OS X 10.7, and possible OS X 10.8. To download, you need to attach the RX600 to your MacBook, turn it on, make sure the system sees it (print a page), then run Software Update.
If that doesn't work, and you need a new all-in-one, I've had good success with Canon products for many years. They have solid operating system drivers, and a good selection of models with individual ink tanks, so I can replace a color that's empty and not throw out a 3-in-1 ink tank when one color is out.
On the camcorder, you might want to ask the question in the iMovie or Final Cut discussions.

  • Scanner Recommendation iMac

I am looking for a scanner recommendation for this iMac.
Photos, and documents, but not necessarily a document feeder.

I'm not an expert but I just last year completed scanning three different huge sources of old photos to digital. I can't imagine just push a button to do stacks of photos. I had to use different settings on different photo material types to get the digital how I wanted the final result.
I used an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner with Epson software because it contains Digital Ice which itself was a life saver to revive old and damaged photos.

  • Scanner recommendations anyone??

Been looking on the Internet - some conflicting data/reviews - lots of reports of issues with Macs, etc, etc.
I need to find a "budget scanner" (under $350 or so) that will work with my g4 1.2ghz emac. It has USB 2.0 - 768 RAM - plenty of disk space - it's running Tiger.
I need to scan about 200 to 250 old slides - and want to digitize them - no hurry - I'll do 5 to 10 or so per day.
    Can anyone make any suggestions??
    Thanks

I had over 1000 35mm sildes taken from the late 50's to the early 70's by my father, which I wanted to preserve and print and which I scanned with an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo scanner. That model is obsolete now, but the rebadged equivalent is the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo.
I used my 1Ghz eMac with 640 GB of RAM and for the approx. 14Mb image each time it was a bit of a work out, but it did not tire.
It was slow, having to place each slide into the plastic positioner, but what I liked about it was its tremendous resolution of 4800 dpi and detailed pre-settings that could be used to adjust the input before I took it to Photoshop.
The high dpi is necessary to transform a small 35mm analogue image into a digital file large enough to be detailed accurately.
These presets took some time to understand and manipulate, but they had the effect of being able to rescue a poor exposure, and then a little bit more fine tuning in photoshop, produced quite a good print.
Most of the slides were well exposed and scanners aside, what was remarkable about that project which took several months, was how resilient and colour fast the 'pigments' in the slides remained after almost 50 years. Whilst I was making an archive, the funny thing is that the slides themselves are an excellent archival medium, unlike prints whose colours tend to fade after about 20 years.
Once happy with the image I printed a selection on high quality paper with Canon archival quality inks. I was surprised at the clarity and colour of the photos; they could have been taken yesterday. Scanning old prints cannot achieve the same result because there is less 'data' to begin with.
Whilst I had success with the Epson Perfection scanner, there may be others that would do just as well, but I can recommend that one at least.

  • My Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner stopped working when I upgraded to Yosemite. The only scanner available is my Epson All-in-One.

I installed the new Yosemite operating system even though I was afraid something bad would happen. Well. it did. I can no longer scan photos using my photo scanner. I have updated all the drivers and it is still not working. I have an Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner, as well as an Epson WorkForce 845 all-in-one scanner, printer, copier. The 845 is on the network. The V500 is connected to my computer. For some reason, I keep getting the error that my V500 is not connected and when I try to add it, my mac does not find it. I know it is there. It was working before I upgraded. Help

  • OS 10.4.4 + Photoshop Elements 2.0 + Epson Perfection 3200 Photo Scanner

i have an epson perfection 3200 photo scanner which had worked fine importing into photoshop elements 2.0 when i had an imac g3, but i cannot get it to work on my new machine, a powerbook g4 using 10.4.4. epson said it should work (i downloaded the most recent driver) but adobe said that 10.4.4 does not support photoshop elements 2.0 or 3.0. i downloaded 3.0 (they have a month trial) and it acknowledged my scanner for a second but then repeated the error message.
    any thoughts?
    thanks.

Further to Barbara's suggestions, have you tried uninstalling your scanner and then disconnecting it physically from your PB. Then reinstall the scanner software and any updated drivers with the scanner still disconnected. Then reconnect the USB to the scanner and see whether you have better success. Epson scanners can be fussy (shy?) about being recognised, and I used these steps when I "lost" my Epson 3170 when moving to 10.3.x.
Barbara is absolutely right about PS Elements 2 and 10.4.4 - I'm also using it regularly with no problems. Since you got it to work with your previous computer and OS, you can also get it to work with your new PB and 10.4.4 - it just may need a little coaxing...

  • HP SOLUTION CENTRE - MISSING for HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner - after upgrade to Windows 7 or 8

Tearing my hair out after searching for months for solution - hope Someone Anyone can help.  I love my HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner and it is still working wonderfully 90% of the time - after a number of years.
However - when I upgraded to Windows 7 and Windows 8 (on other machine) - I had to download New Drivers for it.  These did not come with the HP Solution Centre - which is where I was able to select "Transparencies or Slides".
I have Adobe Photoshop and can scan anything else - but not the Transparencies and Slides for which I bought the machine.
Is there a way of downloading the HP Solution Centre or accessing this feature?
    Happy to hear any solutions
    Thank You

  • Install Epson Perfection 3200 Photo Scanner

My kernel is a custom built 2.6.3. I am trying to install an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo Scanner. It works under SuSE8.2 so there is no fundamental hardware problem. The sane website lists the 3200 as completely supported.
The system recognizes the scanner, as shown in part of cat /proc/bus/usb/devices:
    D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
    P: Vendor=04b8 ProdID=011c Rev= 1.02

    The program sane-find-scanner produces:
    found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x011c) at libusb:001:003
    # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
    # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
    The program scanimage -L produces:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
The problem appears to be that the system cannot find a driver. Is the driver suppose to come from sane and there is a configuration issue? Is the system suppose to find the driver as a module or compiled-in the kernel? Is there some wild and wonderful dev - devsfs issue?
Any intel (small i) would be most appreciated.
    Rick

the generic usb scanner module is no longer in the kernel. any scanner that used it mus use libusb now. to do this first remove any entry you have in any module loading files that load that module.
next add either one of these lines to your fstab:
    none /proc/bus/usb/ usbfs defaults 0 0
    or
    none /proc/bus/usb/ usbdevfs defaults 0 0
but going by your output so far you would seem to have one of these two lines in fstab.
anyway either one of those lines will give root only access to your scanner so you will need to give your user access to the device. your can do that in a few ways.
first you can create a group add your user to it then edit your usbfs line to read:
    none /proc/bus/usb/ usbfs rw,mode=666,gid=<--newgroupnamehere--> 0 0
or if you have a single user you can edit the line to read:
    none /proc/bus/usb/ usbfs defaults,mode=666 0 0
if this does not work read up on hotplug or add this line to you rc.local:
    chown -R <yourusername>.users /proc/bus/usb/xxx/*
where the "xxx" represents the three digit number directory in /proc/bus/usb/ that represents your scanner. you can find this by running scanimage -L as root and it will give you two three digit numbers in the output. then look in the number directory/directories for those two numbers and that will be the directory you put in for the xxx.
