Photo size / download speed solution - 'precompress' photos?

Does anyone know if it would speed the download of/reduce the filesize of the .png files iWeb makes if I were to 'precompress' the large jpegs I use on pages (I'd use Photoshop)?
TIA,
-Corey
2 proc G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   used for pro video production & life in general

I converted all the photos on my web site 'Photos' page to 400x600, jpeg quality setting 7, in Photoshop, before loading them into iWeb, and it speeded up quite a lot. I think quality has suffered a bit but probably preferable to images not being seen at all because viewer gives up! As previous poster said, its the time individual photos take to load, not the thumbnails page, which is improved. It's still not quick especially on a dialup, but better than it was with full rez inputs.
See what you think...

  • Hi why are my photos after downloading twice ,once in photo library and once in a file with the date why cant i delete a file its an iphone 4s please help

why are my photos after downloadon twice one as photo library the other as a file with date how can i delete one file same pics

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • Slow download speeds for my photo/travel blog downloads- how can I speed up

I am trying to make some modifications to my iweb photo/travel blog site to shorten the time it takes to download, particularly on visitors using pc's. It takes over a minute to download a days post if visitor has ultra fast connection speed and 2 or 3 min. with average DSL speeds. My archive page is the slowest as it has now become the longest page... tho it has no pics and graphics to speak of.
My pics are hi resolution, is that the problem or am i posting too many... usually 10 to 15 per daily post with some text boxes to boot??? on the archive page, can I split it up some how into 2 or 3 pages or by month?? thanks for helping a new mac user. mark.

It's a function of your iPhone's data speed, which is a function of your physical location and your carrier.  Talk to your carrier about increasing your data speed (probalby unlikely) or get dedicated internet to connect your computer to, i.e. cable, fiber, etc.

  • Trouble keeping photo size when dragging and dropping photo into new document on elements 12

When trying to place an image into a new document in photoshop elements 12, I select all-copy-paste the image (or even drag it) over to the new doc created.  However, when I do this - the image does not paste in at the same size.  It typically shrinks down in size.   Do I have to save the file, close out and then open the new doc and PLACE it in the document in order for it to keep size?  There must be a better way to do this.  Basically, how can I drag a photo that is 4x6 over to a new doc while keeping the size at 4x6.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Whenever you combine two images, the resolution (ppi) of the bottom image is the resolution for everything. So if you take an image that is, say, 72 ppi, and paste that into an image at 300 ppi, the pasted object will shrink a lot. If you paste a high-res image into a low res image, the pasted object will enlarge a lot. The best way to get consistent results is to make sure that both images are at the same resolution (image>resize>image size) before you start.

  • Photo/Art Download

I'm old, but new to all of this so I need some help. I'm about to sign up for MobileMe and publish a website designed in iWeb "09 (exciting, but terrifying...). I used the blank page template for all of the pages and have photos, artwork, and text boxes. I would like to make it impossible for viewers to copy/paste/download the photos and artwork, but the Photo Download Size option in the Inspector is gray, so "none" is not available. Is what I want to do possible? If so, please explain using directions a senior citizen who's doing this for the first time can understand!

    Ms.K:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The photo size download feature applies to Photo pages where there are multi photos and a slideshow available. In a page like you're using (or any page for that matter) you can't prevent a viewer from copying a photo in the size that it's presented on the page. If you have a 3" x 2" photo on a page any viewer can get a copy of it at 216 pixels x 144 pixels. That's not useable for any decent print, just too few pixels. No matter what you do a viewer can take a screenshot of the photo and that will be at the same size, 216 x 144.
What you can do is put a watermark on each photo like this. Actually you can put a small copyright symbol in one corner with your name rather that a transparent one like my example. Go to VersonTracker.com and search for "watermark" to get numerous watermarking applications. I used Photoshop to do my example.
FWIW A good tutorial on resolution (dpi) can by found here: The Myth of DPI.

  • Reduce photo size

I have tried following all the possibilities for reducing a photo size for email.
I do not get any options for reducing the photo size when I attach a photo in an email, I get no pop up boxes or choice to reduce the picture size.
    Any clues please

if i get the question right - you have phtos on your pad, and want to up[load them to somewhere, but they are too big.  if that is the case, here is a workaround - until somebody smarter comes through with the right solution.
Mail the photo to yourself.  I just mailed a photo that was in i photo at 4.1 meg to myself.  When it arrived, it was 104 k.
If you mail it from the camera roll it will also reduce size.  you can then save that new image, and upload it.

  • Photo Sharing - Download Size?

May I first say what a great upgrade this has been... I know from reading other comments that it hasn't been the same for everyone but it was very simple to get my site updated and be working apart from one thing... here is my problem.
I've made a load of photo pages by dragging photos out of the media inspector panel within iWeb 08 from images that are hi-res (2272 × 1704 pixels) within iPhoto 08. When I select the photos to be shared in the inspector panel (second button from left) I select "Photo Sharing - Download Size? - Original (Full Quality)... all good up to yet... I publish my site and when I go to the images online and download them they have been resized to 1920 x 1440 pixels.
    Why?

'Optimize photos' is enabled by default. I think is a good thing since my domain file was reduced in size after upgrade from 3.5GB to 1.6GB. But if you really want original images to publish then you need to turn off 'Optimize photos' in prefs and then add photos.
    Best,
    Scott

I have over 100 photos, the unedited version of those photos is the only item that downloads onto Shutterfly or my computer. The Apple solution is to email each individual photo (over 100 of them) to yourself & then copy them to your computer? Really? This is the Iphone 5s, isn't it supposed to have great technology? It can't even recognize the photos on my iphone are all edited? Who has time to email over 100 vacation photos to get them correct? That is beyond acceptable from Apple.

Please read this article about how to go about transferring photos from iphone to computer.

  • How do you re-size downloaded photos?

I have a project a client had produced elsewhere.
He needs me to add make some minor changes and add some photos.
The current project contains photos downloaded from google search.
(It's not for broadcast and is a spec show in house reel only)
    The downloaded photos look excellent.
He has other photos from google that he wants to use.
whenever I download and save to my desktop the image is so small- they are unusable in FCP.
He said the original editor was able to use any photo he wanted regardless of image size.
I'm looking like a dummy here.
    Please help.
What do I need to do to get these small images to look good?
(I tried re-sizing in photoshop and they just look over pixelated.)

    Hi -
You may have already done this, but -
When you use Google Images to search for images, if you download the image from the search results page, +you will only download the thumbnail of the image.+ You need to double click on the image you want, and on the page that opens at the top click on "see full size image". Then, if that full size image is a reasonable size, download that.
    Hope this helps.

  • Photo size and uploading to Apple

I'm in the process of making a quite large iPhoto book for my SIL for her b'day. The photos are a compiltion from many of mine, and others sent to me by family members. They are all different sizes, resolution, color and B/W.
After getting them organized, doing a bit of fixing on PS, I now am ready to get them into iPhoto.
Is it wise to take them all into Lightroom where I can do an easy batch change of the resolution? I have read where they should be around 300. It is easy to change them and the test prints I did at home looked ok, even on the small ones that aren't too big to start with. On the export menu of Lightroom, I have the option of stating whether I want them to be exported at JPG, Tiff etc., and I can change the resolution and photo size too.
I probably would export them as JPG, 300 res. and not change their size. Is this ok for the iPhoto books?
Also, if they are of a higher resolution, I assume it will take quite a while to upload them to Apple even with high speed fiberoptic cable internet service.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks, Allie

    Allie:
DO NO USE Lightroom as it messes up the metadata and makes the files not useable in iPhoto. You do not have to preprocess the files to set the dpi to 300 specifically. The only important feature of the file is the pixel dimensions. If the pixel dimensions are large enough as you state you can leave them as is. iPhoto will fit them into the frame you choose and the dpi will be determined that way. No matter what size the files are the book is converted into a pdf file for uploading and printing. My last book of nearly 100 pages came in at approx. 25MB.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Most efficient photo size for iWeb 08

I am building my photography web site in iWeb 08. I have many photos that were previously edited in Photoshop. Some are jpeg and others are psd files. I plan to resize and save all as a jpeg. Then I will import all photo files into iPhoto and use iPhoto as my source location for iWeb.
Question: What size and resolution would be best for iWeb? I realize that iWeb will automatically resize the photos so I want my photos to be a little larger than that. I am trying to avoid importing huge photo files in to iPhoto when I smaller photo file is sufficient.

First of all go to iWeb preferences and uncheck "Optimize images on import".
To get a reasonably fast download time, its not a question of the size of the individual images but the sum total of all the images on a page. Some people put an incredible number of photos on a page and then wonder why it hangs in the browser.
To quickly change file format, decrease file size and get a visual indication of download speed for an image you could try the freeware ImageWell.
    http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html
This application will also watermark your photos and will work in batch mode if you buy the shareware version.
If you want to optimize your JPEGs, as well as all your website files, you can use HTML Optimizer to noticeably increase your website download speed.

Publishing your site to a server, rather than .Mac, will also give you faster download and more storage space for your money.

  • What is an efficient method for increasing speed without deleting photos?

    I have a late 2009 model, 27-inch iMac G-5
    Model Name:                        iMac
      Model Identifier:                iMac10,1
Processor Name:               Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:              3.06 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:   2
      L2 Cache:                            3 MB
      Memory:                              4 GB
      Bus Speed:                          1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:            IM101.00CC.B00
      SMC Version (system):     1.53f13
      Serial Number (system):   QP******5PE
      Hardware UUID:      ****
It has become frustratingly slow of late.
Full Disclosure:  I have 18,660 photos and 81 videos in my iPhoto app.  I understand that deleting some of those would improve speed but these photos represent a good portion of my long life and having turned 75 on the last day of March, 2014, I doubt that I have enough years left to even begin such a task.
I would likely spend days and days agonizing over two nearly identical photos trying to decide which one to discard, then as soon as I made that crucial decision, would probably rethink my choice and pull the rejected photo out of the trash …
    So my question is:
Other than deleting photos (a task I will continue to eschew forever, thank you very much), what are the options available to increase the speed without a substantial commitment of funds from my meager life savings?
My frustration is such that soon, I will be forced to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at a local Mac Store but the nearest one to my home is some 30 miles away and I’d like to avoid the hassle, if possible.
I understand that there is software available online the purports to safely increase the speed of a Mac but not being a techie and of a naturally suspicious bent, I hesitate to download apps unless I’m absolutely assured of their safety.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

  • How to edit photo size in Iphoto

    Hi Guys,
Im trying to find a way to reduce the size of a photo so I can post it on a message board. I cant find where to do this! I tried "cropping" the photo but I dont want to cut the photo I just want to reduce the size from 2048 x 1536 to 800 x 600 (pixels). Is there a way to reduce by percentages like in Windows??? Thanks for the help Im still new to my Imac...Im going to assume there is a way to do this!!!

You'll have to export the photo out of iPhoto using the File->Export->File Export menu option which will let you select the pixel dimension and the quality/compression level of the new file.

  • I have the iCloud Photo Library (Beta) turned on. The photos from my iPhone do get uploaded to the iCloud. The photos are then downloaded to my wife's iPhone (we share the iCloud account). How do I keep the photos from downloading to my wife's iPhone

I do not want all the photos from my iPhone downloading to my wife's iPhone from iCloud? We share an iCloud account. How can I prevent the download to my wife's iPhone from iCloud. .The "Upload to My Photo Stream" is turned off on my iPhone. . I am running 8.1.3.
I have a related question. In order to same space on my iPhone is there a way to upload the photos to the iCloud and then delete them from my iPhone.

The way to keep the photos from downloading to your wife's phone would be for her to go to Settings > iCloud > Photos > and turn off iCloud Photo Library. If that isn't an option, the other option would be for her to have her own Apple ID ( and possibly explore the new family sharing options https://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/family-sharing/ )
Regarding the "related question" see the quotes below from iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
Deleting a photo or video from your Photos app will also remove the item from iCloud Photo Library and from your iCloud storage allocation. Photos and videos you remove can be recovered from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, your content will be removed from the Recently Deleted album.
If you want to reduce the space used by photos on your phone, rather than deleting them see the following:
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
You can turn on Optimize [device] Storage from Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

  • Photos not downloading to app. Getting blank grey boxes instead.

    Hello,
I recently had the need to log out of iCloud to troubleshoot an issue on my iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1.2.
In the photos app, I've got iCloud Photo Library turned on, most of my photos downloaded fine, however, there are several dozen that are showing up as blank grey boxes. If I tap on one, it goes full screen and a little progress circle appears, then hangs up a quarter of the way competed.
I received a new iPhone 6 Plus the day before yesterday, also on ios 8.1.2, and when I logged into all my accounts on it, all the photos downloaded to it without issue. None were missing or grey.
Anyone have any ideas why these photos aren't downloading properly to my iPad?
I've tried both rebooting and a hard reboot (home+ power).
I really would like to avoid having to log out of iCloud again, or restore the iPad,, since it literally takes 15-18 hours for all my data to sync back to the device, most need ing manual intervention to speed up the process, ie launching apps and letting them stay open until all data is synced, then launching the next app, and so on. For example, my collection of photos has 10,974 images and videos, so that alone takes hours and hours to sync.

Yes, the photos are/were on iCloud.com, in addition to, my iPhone 6 Plus. All the photos, except for the newest images, are backed up in iPhoto. I uploaded my entire photo library into the iCloud Photo Library because of the compression, where 98gigs of photos only take up only 28gigs on my iCloud Drive and 9gigs on my iDevices. Can't beat having all your photos in your pocket.
That being said, I knew there would be issues, as iCloud Photo Library is in beta. Moreover, I have found iOS 8 and Yosemite to be the buggiest and most frustrating software releases I have dealt with since the initial release of OS X, back in 2001.
Sad to say that, "It just works," cannot be used to describe the current state of Apples software.
So, I still have over 10,000 images, loosing 108 images isn't really all that big a deal. I just hope it doesn't continue to happen.
On a side note. I have a lot of issues trying to share images with shared folders. I create and name a shared folder. I add people. Then I open the folder, hit the big plus, select photos, hit done, and nothing happens. Sometimes I can get it started by selecting only one photo. Other times I try it on a different device to get it to work. It only works about 60% of the time. It's so frustrating, I'm looking for alternatives.
