Photo slideshows for iDVD - iPhoto or iMovie?

I posted before because I encountered errors when I created a DVD that incorporated photo slideshows and movies. The slideshows were created in iDVD and the movies in iMovie. The dvd was full, and on the one occasion that the burn was "successful", the photos for the menus were randomly re-arranged (and the audio for one movie was assigned to the wrong video). On other occasions, I encountered the dreaded multiplexing error (format error after 5 1/2 hours of encoding). I understand from some of your comments that my DVD is too packed (14 menus and submenus, 9 slideshows, 15 short movies) to encode properly. So I am starting all over and will try to simplify it this time. My question is: which application is best to make slideshows - iPhoto or iMovie? Is one application more stable than the other and less likely to encounter encoding issues? These photos and videos are from a 10 day family trip and I can't really eliminate anything but bells and whistles. Any advice is appreciated - I am grateful that there are so many experienced users willing to help novices like me.

My question is: which application is best to make slideshows - iPhoto or iMovie?
From what I read in the Apple Discussions and my own observations, it seems that both iMovie and IDVD, along with iPhoto, have their strengths and weaknesses. This is what I have found so far:
The default Ken Burns effect in iPhoto is much more pleasing than the one in iMovie. In iPhoto, the zoom and pan are varied; in iMovie, the effect is simply a zoom in. The iMovie Ken Burns effect can become very tedious when applied to a large number of photos. To vary the effect manually can also be a very time-consuming.
iMovie has the advantage providing a means to add text to the photos with a variety of special effects. I haven't found this option in iDVD. With iMovie it is possible to edit music. I have read a few posts that stated the iDVD will produce a better quality image when imported directly from iPhoto as opposed to one created by iMovie.

I hope this helps.

  • Loss of quality of photos when importing from iphoto to imovie

A question... When I import high resolution photos from iphoto and look at the preview on imovie HD, the quality is the same great quality that I can see on iphoto. Once I import the photo clip onto imovie, however, the quality is very poor on the imovie playback. This drop in quality is regardless of whether Ken Burns effect is used or not.
I already checked the quality on imovie preferences and it is already selected as the highest quality (default setting)
Any clues as to why the photo image quality should drop to such a poor image when importing a photo from iphoto to imovie?

    Hi L
There are a great difference on photos shown on a Mac with eg. iPhoto or
PhotoShop and what's going to video.
    a. Different resolution. Just the number of lines as the selected type of project
eg: PAL 4x3 = 625 lines ≈ same in pixles (But square not elongated or visa versa)
    b. iMovie "Viewer" is just an approximation. I connected my miniDV Camera
to FW and analog to a TV. Select in pref - Play back via Camera. Now I see
the final quality on my TV. Usally much better.

  • Photo slideshow for webpage

    Please help -
When visitors open my homepage (I'm using Dreamweaver 8) I
want them to see an image that changes (like a slideshow). Is Flash
the best thing to use? I have tried using the photo slideshow
template from Flash, but find that it is still necessary for my
users to click the arrows in the "controller" in order to begin
viewing the images. Is there a way to have the slideshow begin
    immediately and then continue looping?
Thank you much for your expertise - it is much
    appreciated!

I use resolution 72 which is really ugly if printed... I think watermark is distracting to the viewer
Also, the Kodak "golden standard" 778x517 is often used for this purpose. While it's pretty close to 800x600, supposedly it displays a bit faster, especially true for slower systems
As Rikk previously mentioned, the file export specification of "resolution" whatever the number (even 72) has no bearing on someone's ability to make a print from the file at whatever resolution they choose (within the limits of the pixel dimensions you make available); it's the pixel dimensions that will limit printed size/quality. Perhaps you meant that you use a jpeg "quality" setting of 72, which is indeed fairly low. That might even be set even lower to enable reasonably good web display yet discourage printing.
As to use of watermarks, yes, I agree they can be distracting, but not necessarily. A watermark can be chosen that is a compromise--minimally distracting yet prominent enough to discourage some (maybe not many?) from making a print.
As to the supposed (Kodak) "golden standard 778x517" : I wonder if you are thinking of 768 x 512? In any case, it's certainly not in any way a unique dimension that offers a special advantage in display speed. Sure it should load "a bit" faster than 800x600 since it contains a smaller number of pixels.

  • Convert iphoto book into a slideshow for iDVD one photo at a time in order

Hi I've read a couple of posts that were helpful on this topic, but I have one more requirement to add.
What I'd like is a slideshow made of photos that are now in a BOOK on iPhoto that I can export to iDVD to burn for viewing on a TV.
    The two requirements are:
each photo shows up as an individual slide rather than each slide looking like a BOOK page with more than one photo on it.
There were some posts suggesting to rate each photo and create a SMART ALBUM out of them. That has worked so far to get each photo in an ALBUM.
However, I would like to keep the same order that is in the book. So how do I do this?
Is there anyway to sort a smart album by the time order each photo was rated?
    thanks, matt.

Is there anyway to sort a smart album by the time order each photo was rated?>
Yes, with one extra step. Create a new, not-Smart album for your slideshow. Select all photos in your Smart Album and drag them to the new album. Now you can use the Sort functions.

  • Create a slideshow for iDVD

    Hi all,
I have an iPhoto slideshow that I want to add to an existing iDVD project.
It appears that in iPhoto if i Share to iDVD it goes into a new DVD project - not what I want.
I believe what I need to do is export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie and then add that movie to the iDVD project. Which I can do. But I am creating a widescreen DVD. The best quality export is 4:3 ratio. So not quite what I want.
When I share to iDVD what format/resolution quicktime movie is iDVD creating?
Can I grab this movie and put it into a different iDVD project?
(I know that the best quality is acheived by creating a slideshow direct in iDVD. I plan on having an iPhoto slideshow with KBurns and additionally a manually advanced slideshow of the same photos in iDVD, then the viewer can choose which kind of slideshow they want).

    Marc:
Just close the new iDVD project without saving, go to your Movies folder and find the newly created movie. Open your old project and drag that movie into the menu. As Smtr pointed out it'll be the best quality QT movie from iPhoto that you can get.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Too many images in a slideshow for iDVD 6?

I used iDVD 6.0.2 to import an album from iPhoto, add titles/captions and iTunes music, then burn a DVD. There are 295 slides, and the show stops after the 99th slide. I've read that this is a problem with the older versions of iDVD, but I have never had a problem with this version. Is my only option to break the presentation into smaller slideshows? I don't want to do that if I don't have to.
I also want to avoid creating a QT movie and importing it because I like the caption option that is available with iDVD.
    sue

thanks for the speedy response! i read the information in the link you posted before posting my question, but that info indicates that i should not have a problem with 100+ slides. what's odd is that i cannot get the dvd to play past 100 in any player i try. i've run it in five different players--including a playstation--all with the same results. the dvd stops at slide 100, and that's it.
i also burned three copies with three different media brands of DVD. no difference. i checked the filenames of all the pix to ensure there wasn't a problem there. no problem i can detect.
sooo frustrating since this is the first time i have had a problem with more than 100 slides.
any ideas are welcome. otherwise, i'll just have to break down the presentation into multiple slideshows.

  • Exporting photo slideshow for web

Hi I had a search but couldn't find the answer to my question.
I'm trying to use FCE4 to create slide shows of photos. I don't use video at all. I import the photos in TIFF format and after arranging them into a sequence and adding audio, effects, I then attempt to export them to the web.
Problem is the Quick time movie project that is exported isn't appropriate. It's either too large for the web (+60MB) or it is very low quality and not the same quality as I viewed in FCE.
I would like the size of the video be 1024x768, and I'm using Export using Quick Time conversion, and have experimented with the various setting for Quick Time Move including dial up internet, broadband high, or more detailed settings using TIFF compression. The manual isn't helping much...would appreciate your help!

It depends a lot on what level of broadband you expect the user to have, and whether the video has to play immediately. There are some natural sizes to use for the video, such as 1280x720, 960x540 or 640x360, and the frame rate ought to be 24, 25, or 30, depending on the source material.
Making it for medium to good broadband, and with wanting the video to play right away, you could do say 1280x720, 1 megabit per second, H264. It would look reasonably good. If you don't mind people having to download for a little while before the video can play, then take the data rate up to 3 mbps.
So, one way to look at that would be to use the AppleTV preset from QuickTime Player, then open that mp4 file and save as to mov (just to make your html task easier). It would look very good, but might take a bit of downloading time before it's ready to start playing.

  • How to create a photo slideshow in imovie 11

describe how to create a 200 photo slideshow from the start using imovie 11 with titles, transitions and music and then burn it to a dvd

iMovie is to edit movies; creating a slideshow is easier in iPhoto. When finished, you can then move it to iMovie or iDVD to create a cool menu/theme and burn it.
Here is a link to Apple support - I searched for "how to create a slideshow in iPhoto":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=how%20to%20create%20a%20slideshow%20in%20iPhoto
A much better alternative would be Photo to Movie (not free) - it does everything you want:

  • Insert an iPhoto SlideShow into iDVD

I do not succeed in inserting a SlideShow from iPhoto into iDVD including audio and slide effects. Only pictures will be inserted. Even exporting the slideshow from iPhoto into a QuickTime movie is losing the audio and slide effects. Can anyone give some advice what's going wrong?
    Message was edited by: hherb

You cannot import an iPhoto Slideshow into iDVD and keep the audio and transition effects from iPhoto.
    See this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8828619&#8828619
You need to create the slideshow directly in iDVD, and add the audio and transitions from withing iDVD.
Your transitions must be the same between the photos.
It is reported here that you can do this with Quick Time: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10356386&#10356386
Have a look at these threads, for using iPhoto and iMovie: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2299375&tstart=0

  • HT4710 Updates for iPhoto and iMovie in the Mac App Store

    Hi,
I recently bought a new computer running Lion. When I started using the computer, I opened the Mac App Store and signed in with my Apple ID (the same one I've always used for buying apps from there, music from the iTunes store, and apps for my iPhone). I am able to easily access and download my old purchased apps to my new computer without a problem. However, in the updates section it shows updates available for both iPhoto and iMovie, but when I go to update them I get this message, "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." iPhoto and iMovie came on the new computer, and the only Apple ID account that I have ever used is the one that I am currently signed in under. Does anyone have any idea how I can get these updates, or at the very minimum, get rid of them so that they do not show up anymore (frankly, I find the red circle very annoying, and I don't really use either of these apps so I'm not too concerned about them).
    Thanks!
Sorry, I found a few other questions about this same thing after posting, so I'll try those solutions.

Open iTunes on the new Mac, sign into your account and view your account information. There is a section for Purchase History where you can view the invoices for everything that you have ever bought from the iTunes stores and the Mac App Store.

  • Displaying Photo Titles for Photos Moved From iPhoto

I have added comments in the 'titles' area of a number of photos. When I import the photos to iMovie, the photo titles are lost.
Is there a way to maintain the photo titles, when photos are imported from iPhoto to iMovie.
    Thanks

I found the solution, but adding titles in iMovie, rather than bringing the titles from iPhoto.

Thanks TD, I have been looking around the net all morning and just as you said, bo iphoto etc with Leopard! I will try installing bundled applications from disc that came with my mac!
