Photo Sorting Malfunction

Hi, recently upgraded to iPhoto 6 (since 3 weeks) from iPhoto 5 that I have had since August 2005. Previously on v.5 whenever I imported photos they would end up on top in the library with all the older photos downwards. This meant that whenever I opened iPhoto and wanted to access older photos I would have to scroll down (which I don't mind and prefer). However, with v.6 I have lately imported quite a lot of photos and at one time, v.6 prompted me to rebuild my thumbnail cache. I pressed okay and ever since the scroll bar ends up at the bottom, which means that when I want to access my most recent photos I have to scroll up. I know I can change the ascend/descend thing. So lets say I change the ascend/descend to have all my newest photos on the bottom, if I want to see older photos I still have to scroll up and I hate that. I know it’s a "small" thing but I really hate scrolling up. You don't see the first page in Pages or Word being on the bottom and having to scroll up. I have tried everything to solve this issue without success. I even deleted my Library completely from the computer and reinstalled it and that works (but all my thumbnails are in a mess so I have to sort them manually) which just results sooner or later in the scroll bar ending up in the bottom.
Is there anyway I can solve this, its quite irritating and never occurred in iPhoto 5.

Called Apple support for 1 hour today trying to sort out why the blue scrollbar ends up at the bottom instead of at the top in the library, using manual mode.
In iPhoto 5 and ALL other applications I have ever used: Safari, Office, iCal, Pages, Keynote, Explorer, iTunes, etc., the scrollbar is ALWAYS in the top corner, but for some reason now, in iPhoto 6 it is in the bottom corner, thus forcing me to scroll up.
Having talked to the support, it seems that there didn't use to be a ascending/descending option in iPhoto 5, but that it was always automatically descending. In iPhoto 6 those options have been added, but do NOT work when you select Veiw - Sorting as Manually. WHY? For some reason, whenever I have manually selected, iPhoto automatically selects Ascending order and because it is greyed I cannot de-select it, and thus select descending, WHY?
I do NOT believe it is up to Apple to decide whether I should have my library in ascending or descending mode, but up to ME! In all other sorting modes you can select if you want ascending or descending, but not in manually, again, WHY?
I please urge Apple to include in the next update of iPhoto, (possibly iPhoto 6.0.2) the option to users to decide if they want ascending or descending order in manually sorting mode. It is very annoying to have to scroll up and so far, the only application in the universe that forces you to do this (that I know of). Apple should be about choice and freedom of such, not about you forcing anything upon me.
Would any users of iPhoto 6 (that have used iPhoto 5), please let me know if they have experienced the same thing, and/or if they library in manual mode always forces the scrollbar to the bottom?

Not a problem when using iPhoto on a Mac, which the transfer of photos is primarily based on - not manually managing photo storage as seems to be common with Windoze.
The same should be available with a supported photo management app on a PC.

  • IPad2 iOS5 random photo sorting bug?

After upgrading my iPad2 to iOS5, the photo sorting in albums appears to be totally randomized which makes it pretty much unusable. Is this a bug? Before the upgrade, it used to be sorted by the time the photo was taken and this was at least better than apparent random sorting. Reverting to the previous sort method would be a good fix. Better would be to have a simple way to control the sort order.

I have lion and all of the latest updates, moved from mobile me to i cloud but my "albulms" on the i pod, i phone and i pad won't stay in the same order that they are in i photo or i tunes. The genius bar at the store went through everything and said that it's an update problem that will have to fix it. I hope they get to work quickly. 2 years ago I was promised by a senior tech that the album sorting problem would be fixed in i photo (about 20% of my albums won't stay sorted by title no matter what I do and about 80% will) and that has never been fixed.
I pray that they read these forums and realize their problems that need to be fixed because it's impossible to go to a saved item on my iphone or ipad without any order to the sorting.

  • Photo sorting criteria 9.2.1

I think we have all noticed the change in the photo sorting criteria with the new 9.2.1 version of iTunes.
Before, sorting was alphabetical. Now, it is by "date last changed" of photo.
If you do not have iPhoto, there appears to be no way to change the settings/ criteria for the sequencing of the photos (and hence, slideshow). This is infuriating for clients who are not set up in the "new criteria" format (the photo option on iPod is now practically redundant!).
i.e. it seems that Apple have changed the sort criteria without giving clients any option (other than to buy their software...).
    Or am I missing something?

I've had this very same issue and it's making me very upset. I'm looking for an answer to this!

  • Perserving Photo Sort

I created a new Slideshow in iPhoto 5. In this slideshow, I manually arranged the photos. I now want to move this into iMovie, but I now realize I should have created an album instead of slideshow. Is there any way to preserve the photo sort in my slideshow and get them into iMovie or into an iPhoto album?
    Thanks.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Catfish,
In the slideshow viewing strip-highlight the first image
scroll to the end an Shift click the last image so all are now selected.
    Go to Photos>batch change
    Change the "title" to "Text"
In the text field put in the name of the slideshow
Each image will have the slideshow name and be numbered from the first to last.
Now go and highlight the library in the source column.
On the bottom right of the viewing window put in the name of the slideshow text in the search box.
Your search will come up with all the images in the slideshow
    Now select all
Go to File>new album from selection
    Your new album will open
Now here is where it should work for the order, but it doesn't and it drives me crazy.
    Go to View>sort photos>by title
What you will get is 1, then 11, the 12 which is a pain because you want 1, then 2, then 3
At least you have them numbered correctly so if you use the album in iMovie you do know where to place the images as they are numbered.

  • Photo sorting and sync

I have iphoto album on Mac OSx operating system, and current IOS 5.1.1 I Pad with Iphoto intalled. Still when I sync the Mac OSX album to the iPad, the photo sort and caption does not sync to Ipad. Instead the album is installed on  ipad  only by date and time photo was taken.  How do I get the correct sorting (and the captions) to translate on IPAD album?

I would delete it and redownload it. If you signed into the same iTunes account that originally purchased the any app you will not be charged again.

  • Photo Sorting on iPad and iPhone all screwed up - HELP

I don't know when exactly this happened - but in one of the recent updates in the last two months of either iTunes, iPhoto, or iOS something was changed in the photo sorting algorithms. iPhoto does not seem to dictate the sort order any more?
I have a smart album in iphoto that is called "our best pics" and that automatically takes the top ranked pictures and sorts them by date. That used to be perfectly mirrored on the iPad and iPhones in our household. Since a few weeks, this does not work anymore. The order of the pictures in the album are now very random, but identical on all iOS devices. I tried deleting the pictures and re-syncing, but nothing changes. Anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks Klaus

Spare yourself the pain. Use 3rd apps to sort you photos.

  • Wanted: photo sorting software

I need some guidance as to suitable photo-sorting software. I'm pretty sure iPhoto isn't what I want, but I thought this forum the best place to ask.
I am generating audio-visuals in Adobe Premiere, mostly consisting of scanned slides. The images are mostly scanned slides in multi-layered Tiff format, typically about 100 MB. Before jumping into Premiere, I'd like to pre-sort the images. Typically, the images might come from a dozen folders and number anywhere from 50 to 500. Some considerations:
I don't want to alter my existing folder structure.
I don't want the software to copy the images, just link to them. I could handle the software making reduced-size, preview copies, say in jpeg format.
I don't need to edit, add metadata, upload, share, run a slideshow or do anything with the images other than sort them and look at them.
I need to be able to save the "Sort" as a file so I can back it up. What I mean by the "Sort" file is the data that allows the images to be sorted, not the actual images. The saved "Sort" would be a very small file.
To sum up: I'm looking for image-shuffling software. Adobe Bridge is very good, but fails point 4. I can't save the "Sort" file except via copying some folder buried ten folders deep. And Bridge seems to copy the images and thereby clog my system.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the responses.
Terence: I probably should have used the word "shuffle' instead of sort. By "Sort" I mean the order in which the slides appear: slide 1, slide 2, slide 3…
A particular show might have, say, 500 slides from 37 different folders on my hard drive. I want to be able to drag them one-by-one into a window and arrange them in order. The process may extend over several weeks as slides are added or removed, so I want to be able to back up the "Sort". For instance, so that a friend can work on the "Sort" on their computer.
Once the "Sort" is finalised, that's it for the sorting program. I don't want to renumber the images and export to USB stick, like you might do for a manual slide presentation, because the slides are already indexed in a database so I can find them easily. For example, if I'm looking for a slide of Lake Pedder, dated before 1970, taken by John Pickford, I can find them in a few seconds by searching the database. One of those slide might have the label PiJ27, which tells me it's slide #27 located in the Pickford J folder.
The next step is to type the slide labels into the script:
    [PiJ27]  "Lake Pedder in Tasmania's south-west was…"
[RG83]  "But now it's not there no more…"
Then I manually import the slides into Premiere and dump them into the Timeline.
So, it's a slide-shuffling program I'm looking for. Sorting, as such, doesn't come into it.

  • Why are my photos sorted alphabetical in iPhoto (which is what I want)  but in date order on my iPhone & iPad?

Why are my photos sorted alphabetical in iPhoto (which is what I want)  but in date order on my iPhone & iPad?

One for the iPad or iPhone forums I would guess. There is no iPhoto for iOS

  • LR 5.6 Sorting photos - Sort by file name?

Is there a way to sort the photos by file name?  The files seem to be in a random order in the filmstrip.  They stay in this order or reverse order when using Sort above the filmstrip.

On the toolbar above the filmstrip there is a dropdown menu to the right of “sort” where you can choose file name. Press the T key once or twice to show/hide the tool bar if it can’t be seen immediately.

  • IPad photo sort order issue is ridiculous. Why is this not fixed?

    Apple,
Sometimes you might want to come down from the mountain and just fix the most obvious and insanely frustrating issues with your software. The one that rises to the top at the moment is when images are imported to iPad from folders (not iPhoto) they are not sort by name. Whose universe are you in that thinks this is helpful to anyone not using iPhoto and why did the 4.2 update not fix this issue. The iPad is made to present photos in the most amazing way. One of the top three uses for the device. Third party apps for photo presentation/portfolio are a sorry lot of problems and forcing them to import one image at a time is brutal.
This may also be a good time to rant about changing the orientation switch on the side of the iPad. That was one thing that just worked now it doesn't. You now need to take 5 steps to stop the orientation from changing. Again in what universe is this a good idea?
Thanks for all the incredible things you make but please take a minute and fix the simple stuff.

Apple does not really read these forums. If you want to make a suggestion to Apple go here:

  • How to turn off automatic photo sorting in camera roll?

    Hi,
I was wondering if there was a way to turn off the automatic sorting of pictures added to the camera roll? My problem is that I hardly take any pictures of my own using my ipad; instead I like to save funny pictures/memes, screen shots, fan art, etc I find on the internet. I have a ton of those kinds of pictures but the camera roll sorting feature makes it extremely hard to find pics that I JUST added because it sorts them by the date THEY WERE MADE. This is a huge problem because some of those memes are extremely old and I have no idea when they were made, so I end up having to search through hundreds of my pictures by month, years, etc just to find the one I recently added. Is there a way to turn this off so that the photos are just in the order of when YOU YOURSELF added them to your camera roll? For example, in the old version all of my newly added pics would be the very last picture at the bottom of the whole group.
I apologize if there is an easy fix to this problem, but I have not been able to locate one if there is.
I have an iPad 2 and the newest version of ios 7 installed.
    Thanks

One solution is to take a screen shot of the photo. That should make it last in line.
Another solution. Make a new album. Transfer the photos to the new album. Then change the photo order, by tapping select, hold your finger on the photo, move it, tap done.

  • Photo Sorting Issues with iTunes 10.1.1.4 & 3Gs

Hi, folks. Does anyone know what logic iTunes uses when sorting photos from a computer during sync? I have a large set of photos I'm trying to keep chronological (as they are on my computer) but every time I sync them, they get all out of order on the phone.
At first I thought iTunes sorted by the name of the photo. Nope. Then I thought it was the EXIF Date Created tag. Nope. Finally, I figured it had to be the Date Modified tag. Again, no.
I'm really hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I'd really like to understand how the software sorts images during sync.
    Thanks!
