Photo Stream and my iPhoto Library

When a photo shows up on my MacBook Pro or iMac and it says Photo Stream next to the photo name can I be confident it is saved to my library and won't be dropped by iCloud when I exceed 1000 photos or 30 days?

Thanks for the response.  Now, I have several differenat feeds to my library (iPhone synch, digital camera download and Photo Stream).  It can get confusing as to which was the source for a given picture.  A few pictures automatically say Photo Stream in the title along with the date.  Can I assume these are photos that came from Photo Stream, and therefore should be moved to an album?

Is this iPhoto on your Mac?  Are you referring to the photos that were in your iPhoto LIbrary prior to the upgrade to iPhoto 11?  If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If that's not what you're referring to then you should describe what is happening in more detail. Remember we can't see your Mac or your iPhone so need detailed and accurate descriptions of what you're experiencing.
Also we need infomartion like do you have an iCloud account and are you logged into it on all of your devices, iPhoto and Mac? do you have Photo Stream enabled on both.

  • Photo Stream and MobileMe in iPhoto: I don't get it!

    Hi
Photo Stream is on for iPhoto on my iMac, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch.
I'm somewhat confused about how to handle this feature - aside from the basic understanding that it syncs photos I take, say, on my iPhone, to all other devices without the need to manually sync.
    Could someone please confirm / suggest answers to the following;
    1) photos I take on my iPhone are shown in my camera roll and under a separate photo stream roll.  I understand that photo stream on iOS devices holds the last 1000 images taken (unless you delete some following iOS 5.1).  Correct?
    2) my iPhoto library on my iMac stores 100% of the photo stream photos thereby negating the need to manually sync my iPhone (which I use to take photos) with iMac. Correct again?
    3) Under 'Events' on iPhoto (iMac) it seems to create a new 'event' every month (and christens it, say, as 'March 2012 photo stream' for example) which holds that months images taken.
    a) the folders appear in the top left hand corner of the 'Events' page which I don't like as all other events are shown in chronological order (i.e. the latest 'event' being in the bottom right corner of the page). Can I do anything about this, as in set it so that the photo stream folders create themselves at the bottom of the screen after the previous last event?
    b) These monthly 'events' are just that; events that have happened within that last month which could comprise of several different events.  I categorise by actual event rather than everything that has happened within a particular time frame.  This therefore immediately conflicts with photo stream.  I presume I am perhaps meant to select certain 'events' within the month's photo stream and then create a new 'event' from that but I don't know how to do this?  Could anyone advise how / what they do?
    4) I had a MobileMe account which expired last year.  Instead of resurrecting the email address for my iCloud account I chose a slightly different one.  This seems to pose a problem as under 'Albums' I have several MobileMe albums which generate a pop-up box asking me to log in.  As my MobileMe account is expired, the password prompt is not accepted.  I therefore can't share my photos as I previously did.  Is there a work-around?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes.
    3. a: View Menu -> Sort Events
    3. b Flag the photos you want to move and go Events -> Create Event from Flagged Photos

  • Can't select photo stream and Facebook in iphoto

I don't know why, on the side of iPhoto where we can select the library, we got a section call WEB, where we got our Photo Stream and Facebook account.
I don't know why but I can't select those two facebook account and Photo Stream to see and manage the photos that are in those section. I click on it and nothing happen.
But I can share with the share button at the bottom to those sections
Can someone can tell me why I can't select those sections?
I got iPhoto 9.4 and Mountain Lion 10.8.2

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • HT201317 Differences of Camera Roll, Photo Stream and Photo Library on iPhone?

I use my iPhoto exclusively as my camera at hand and that means I have tons of photos. What is the difference between Cameroll, Photo Stream and Photo Library?  It seems that my Photo Stream has images that can be deleted ( a trash bucket icon) whereas the tech support and my local Mac store said the Photo Stream images are the ones that will be sent to iCloud and should not have the bucket.  Whereas my Photo Library is not deletable? Whats is this all about and how can I make it right so I may manage my images correctly?

Camera Roll, all the picture you have taken with your iPhone. They are include in the iPhone Backup but should be transfered to your iPhoto Library on the computer for a better back up. Just like in the old days with a film camera, the is like you iPhones roll of film.
Photo Stream is iCloud's way of sharing your photos between your devices. It is not permanent storage for photo's limited to 1000 photos and can be deleted automatically in 30 days. It is a handy way to veiw photos on an Apple TV and other iOS devices or a quick and simple way to transfer them into iPhoto on your computer with out having to connect your iPhone to the computer. These photos are not backed up other than being visible on all your devices.
The Photo Library contains all the photos you synced from your computer. They are not in any part a part of iCloud or it's back ups. Since these photos come from your computer they should be backed up using it's backup routine. These photos should be managed using iTunes to add and remove them.
Take a picture with your iPhone, the new photo will end up in Camera Roll and Photo Stream. Copy that photo to your iPhoto Library on the Mac either by connecting your iPhone or select the photo in Photo Stream in iPhoto and it will get copied back to your iPhone in it's Photo Library. Once in the Library and a more stable backup routine you are able to detele it from the Camera Roll to clean it up. The Photo Stream copy could be deleted or leave it there for viewing on other devices that may not have access to your iPhoto Library. I suspect we may be able to share Photostream.

  • TS3989 I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my macbook pro and I just got 2 iPhones for my family and only one streams photos to iCloud photo stream.  Both iPhones have the same Apple ID and have Photo Stream turned on.  Shouldn't both iPhones stream ph

I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and on 2 new iPhones that have the same AppleID as the MacBook Pro.  However only one iPhone will stream photos to iPhoto on the MacBook Pro.  All these devices were purchased in the last 2 weeks.  What setting is wrong?

Photostream only syncs photos over Wi-Fi, make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi to begin with.
Photostream only syncs when the camera app is closed, ensure it is closed.
Photostream only syncs when the battery is above 20%, try recharging the device
Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
Note: disabling photostream and re-enabling it will result in any photos that are currently in the photostream album on your device, that are older than 30 days old, not being added back.

  • I used to see a monthly "Feb 2014" photo stream category in my library for each month.  Now all of my photo stream photos (from my iPhone) are under "iCloud" under "Sharing" and I don't know how to get my pix out of there and separate them into libraries

My computer has changed how it accepts photos from my phone.  They used to post into a library by the month and year, e.g., "Feb 2014 photo stream," but now all of the photos from my phone for the past year or so are lumped together into the "Shared" section under "photo stream." I did not put them there (that I know of) and now don't know how to get them out and into a library where I can categorize them.

The monthly events "Feb2014" will show you all photos that have been imported from "My Photo STream", if you have enabled "Automatic Import" in the "Preferences > iCloud" tab.
The albums you are seeing under "iCloud" are the "Shared Photo Streams" and "My Photo Stream". To import from your "Shared Streams" drag the photos frommthe Shared Streams album to the Projects in the library panel.

    What version of iPhoto?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

    Galdaplh,
What do you mean by "reverting to photo"?  "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails.  You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

  • HT5260 Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I have added photos from iPhoto into Photo Stream and enabled my iCloud but I can't see any uploaded photos. Does this sound right?

Enable PhotoStream in iCloud first, then add the photos to PhotoStream in iCloud. Of course, you will need PhotoStream also enabled on your other devices also in order to view them.

  • I imported 635 images into an iPhoto album so that I can share them via a photo-stream. However, iPhoto says there are only 600. When I try to add the missing images it says they are already there. Why can i not see these images in iPhoto?

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • How do I delete a picture on both Photo Stream and Camera Roll?

I would like to keep my iPhone4 Photo Stream and Camera Roll Albums free of crappy photo's. I would also like to reduce my time managing these two albums. Is there a way to delete a photo on Camera Roll and have the same photo automatically deleted from my Photo Stream at the same time?
I use iPhone4 with iOS 5.1.1, OSX 10.6.8 and AppleTV software version 5.1

Copies of Photo Stream photos you have saved to your Camera Roll on an iOS device or imported into events in your iPhoto or Aperture library, and photos you have copied into a folder on your PC that's not part of My Photo Stream, will not be deleted when you delete photos from Photo Stream.
