Photo sync error- can't update because the required file cannot be found

After setting preferences for updating photos, i get the error-
"can't update ipod because the required file cannot be found"
It seemes to update all other stuff like music and podcasts, but will not update photos.
This is driving me crazy!
Any help would be appreciated

The same problem exists with the German Windows version of iTunes (7.1.1.5).
The error message says nothing!
I wasted a lot of time checking the photo files but there was nothing wrong.
Then I monitored the hd-access to find out WHAT a file is missing: it seems to be about the cache files of the program that isn't orientated right about it's own files!!! It seems to be a big fat bug!!!
The hint here really helps but it also means that all compressed files will be deleted and compressed again. That takes hours of time and lots of GB temp-space on the drives.
I think Apple should deliver a bug-free version of iTunes as soon as possible. And Apple should talk to the customers for that they must not waste their time because of bugs in Apple software.
Will Apple read this?
I can't find an email-adress to send it directly to apple.

  • "The iPod **** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" Error

    Hello,
Upon doing a 'zero-all bits' reformatting of my 5G iPod with Disk Utility and using the 'Restore' feature in iTunes 7, every time I sync my iPod with iTunes, I get an error message after the sync in the form of
"The iPod ** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found"
and photos, contacts, and calendars are not synchronizing. I tried a second 'Restore' attempt but to no avail. Previous to reformatting my 5G iPod, I've not seen this error message.
I would be grateful if someone could offer any clues. Many thanks.

    A little update.
Upon reinstalling iTunes 7, deleting my iTunes-related .plist files, and reparing permissions on my hard drive, I can now sync my contacts and calendars with my 5G iPod.
As for Photos, the "required file cannot be found" error seems to be due to the default setting in the 'Photos' tab, 'Sync photos from:' pull-down menu to 'iPhoto'. If I choose my 'Pictures' folder, photo synchronizing works, albeit including everything in my iPhoto library, including originals and modified versions of the photos.
I can only surmise that the default setting for synchronizing photos is somehow buggy in iTunes 7. I guess I'll just wait for an update.

  • Error message: iPod cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.

Each time I sync my 5th generation iPod to my laptop and open iTunes, I get the message "iPod cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." My husband already updated my iPod with the most current Updater (6/28/06). Any thoughts or suggestions?

After looking further into the archives, I got an answer to my question. There is a file called "iPod Photo Cache", located in the Pictures folder, that should be moved to Trash. Once done, the error message pops up no more!

  • Ipod cannot update. The required file cannot be found?? Any help please.

    Hi,

( but it was still on the computer thank goodness, anyway now I can't put anything back on to my Ipod, it say "Ipod cannot update. The required file cannot be found"
I have Windows Xp Pro 2, what can I do, please lead me in the right direction.
    Thanks

OK - Looks like your iTunes is working and has the songs you expect in it. No need to uninstall iTunes.
Are the Playlists on the iPod only, or are they in iTunes only, or are they on both? Are they populated with the songs you expect?
You can save the Playlists by 'Exporting' them individually to a PC file. Within iTunes, select (highlight) a playlist, go to File==>Export Song List and save the file to a 'Playlists' folder that you create. Save the playlists as a .txt and an .xml file (do both for each playlist: data redundancy is good).
Do you have the original photos that are on the iPod? We will have to Restore the iPod and all data on it will be erased. As you have all the necessary music on iTunes, all we would be concerned about are the photos. Or anything else you haven’t mentioned.
As long as you are satisfied with the state of your iTunes (all music and playlists present and accounted for), then you can comfortably Restore the iPod and place it all back on the unit. Restoring an iPod will not impact your iTunes. It just clears off the iPod's HD and replaces the operating system with a fresh copy. This should correct your inability to download any additional music to the iPod.
Before you proceed with the Restore below, make sure that you have copies of all the data on the iPod so you do not lose anything.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software (if you already do, skip to *)
You also need to install the new Updater software (if applicable) by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
    After rebooting, run the Updater.
    * Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version and format your iPod's hard drive.
After the Restore complete, re-register the iPod with iTunes, choose your syncing preference and place the music back on the iPod. Do whatever it is you do with the photos (I just have a mini, so no experience with photos), and you should be good to go.
Post back if you have any questions. Especially if you are unsure of anything before you perform any additional processes.

  • ...cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.

I just got my 2gig iPod nano for Christmas and it works fine, i uploaded like 109 songs on it aleady and a few photos. I only connected it to my computer like twice but now when i tried to add a few more songs to it from iTunes an error occurs with a pop-up of "The iPod 'Rob's I-Pod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." This struck me as odd, seeing as I thought I hadn't messed-up anything. Even weirder is when I tried to restore my iPod another error comes up saying "The iPod 'Rob's I-Pod' could not be restored. An unknown error has occured(1418)."
Can some one help me and tell me what files i should have, where i can get new files if needed, and what is resticting me from listening to the music i so desire...
If there is anything else you need to know just tell me and ill find out.
So basically I am all set as long as i dont want to hear any new songs within like the next two years.
    Thanks,

I just dealt with the same problem. None of the answers people gave to the problem worked!
Whatever it is that you're trying to put into your iPod... make sure that the file is located in your "My Music" file first.
Basically, when you get that message double check and if what you selected isn't in "My Music" drag and drop into it and try again.
    I hope that helped!

Can anyone please help,my i pad 1 will not sync with certain photo albums from i photo that i once had loaded on the i pad, i have done a format but with no joy, it keeps saying i pad cannot be synced, the required files cannot be found,

Have you tried deleting the photo cache (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314) ?

  • When trying to sync my iPod, it says that it cannot be done because the required file cannot be found. What does that mean?

I added a few songs to my iTunes and my computer started moving slow. So I took a break by shutting down the computer then waiting 20 mins before I restarted it and continued downloading songs. When I tried to sync the iPod, a small windiw apeared saying that my iPod could not be synced because the required file could not be found. What does this mean? What do I do?

When you updated your iPhone did you also update the iTunes on your computer?

  • When I try to sync my phone it says that "the required file cannot be found".  I'm just past warranty - of course - any ideas on how I fix this?

I plugged in my IPhone 3GS to sync and it went through the process but at the end it said it couldn't find the required file.  What could have happened?

Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder. If location can be found here:

  • IPod cannot be updated.  The required file cannot be found.

    Hi,
I have a 5G 30GB video iPod, which can't update to my iBook G4. I have tried the 5 Rs with no luck. I try to keep my music, videos and photos on my external hard drive to save space on my laptop. I found some photos on the laptop local hard drive and moved them to the external hard drive - including the iPod Photo cache.
Within local HD/Users/my user name/Pictures or just Pictures in the sidebar) i found iPhoto Library/iPhoto Cache. Within iPhoto Cache, there was a lot of F files - F00 - F50. Then there is IPodInfo.plist and Photo Database. I deleted all the F files, since I don't know what they do, but left the IPodInfo.plist and Photo Database in place. At least I thought I deleted them, but now I look in this location and the F files are still there. Any idea why I can't update?
    Please help! Thanks.

king of... I have to help ya... I see u r a going crazy
I just had this problem, and fixed it...
from what I got, u CAN'T update photos which r in a folder whitin folder (aka subfolders).
I tried to add 3 folders and got the same message u got. so I tried adding 1 folder at a time. 2 folders updated and the folder that had another folder in it (a subfolder) also with pics didn't. so I cut and pasted them to the folder they were in, and deleted the subfolder, and it updated.

p.s. if u still have a problem (or u didn't understand) feel free to email me at [email protected] (but write "ipod help" in the subject so I won't delete u) that is relevent for all other users! enjoy

  • "Ipod cannot be synced because the required file cannot be found"

I have a 4th gen Ipod. It was working fine up until I installed Itunes 7.2, then it started acting up, making noises and taking forever for my computer to recognize it. Now it won't sync or restore (Error 1418). When connected to my husband's MAC at work it recognizes it, restores it, and he is able to put files on it. But all my music is on our home PC and when I plug it in, again it won't sync. I've uninstalled Itunes, installed the latest version, restored and reset all settings on my Ipod. It will sync about 5 songs and then say it cannot find a file and then the songs on my Ipod music list get next to them from the Itunes screen. I know what it means when that's on my music library, but have never had it happen just on my Ipod Music list..
    Please help!!

yeah i had an ipod that was freezing when playin music and i brought it in to best buy, cause i have a warrenty and they traded it out for a repaired one. Now the new one is doing the exact same thing as what you described and i'm flipping out. if you find out what is wrong let me know. i'm going back in tomorrow to see if they can fix it or replace it.

  • The iPod "--" cannot be updated.  The required file cannot be found.

What does this mean? Would this explain why my photos are not being transferred to my iPod?
I had to restore original settings on my iPod and then gave it a new name ("gb")
Is this why I keep getting this message? If so, how do I go about fixing it?

  • The iPod "iPod" cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.(again)

tTunes recognizes my iPod and I can download the SONGS onto my iPod, but it gives me that message="The iPod 'iPod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." and my videos and photos can't get onto my iPod.

    I have the same problem.
I can update songs just fine.
Ive restored and re-installed ipod and ipod software like a maniac.
    None of those work.
    D:
I'm thinking theres somthing wrong with iTunes creating a new Ipod Cache folder.....
Or it's a system error that happens when any software/hardware is updates (auto or not) or is changed in any form or way!
    (installed, un-istalled or the like)
It prolly needs to fixed manualy.
(not by reinstalling or update-dating ipod software)
If some one could tell me what to do i'll be more than happy to do it.

I have the latest iPod software and iTunes. When I plug my 5G ipod into my computer, after it transfers a few new songs, I get the following pop-up message:

    Any tips? Thanks!

I am having this exact problem.
Though what will also happen after I click on "ok" the ipod will disconnect it self from itunes; it remains pluged in and the "do not disconnect" icon is shown on the screen, but it just stays like that from any where from 2-30 minutes. Eventually it will reconnect and start updating again untill the "The iPod 'name of iPod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." message comes up and the whole prosses starts over again, this has made updating the ipod which I have already reset, quite a headache to update, the prosses has not yet been compleated as I cannot be at my computer for mor than a few hours at a time. I also reinstalled itunes to see if that would fix the problem it has not. Though before, I would also get the message "an unknown error has occured." now that dosen't seem to appear, so at least that is fixed.
    Please help!
