Photo won't open in edit box

Out of about 1500 photos on iPhoto, around 100 of them will not open in Preview, in slideshow, or in the edit box. The rest of them are okay, and open in all applications. I have a "photo thumbnail" of the picture in my iPhoto library, but when I double click on the thumbnail, the edit screen is just blank white. Any ideas on how to "restore" the photos? I've looked in trash cans, but there is no sign of life there.

I have a similar problem. I edited photos from the last roll. Then I created a new smart album, titled it, selected the photos, and dragged them into the album. Now, when I click the thumbnails, the image flashes for a split second, but then goes to the edit box which is grey with a dotted square with an exclamation point. This happens with the library and the album. Where are my images?
BTW, I also rebuilt the cache when prompted today, and upgraded to iPhoto 6.0.5 a few days ago.

  • Photo won't open in editing software

I have set iPhoto to open Elements 4 when I edit a photo. When I try to edit a photo, Elements opens but the photo doesn't come up. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Does your iPhoto General preferences section look like this? Are you double clicking on the thumbnail in order to open PSE and start the editing process? If not, how are you doing it?
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Some photos don't open in edit

Some of my photos won't open in edit. When I try to do this I get a grey screen with a question mark in the middle. Also, other photos will open but they are not enlarged in the edit window. Still others work in edit fine. There is no rhyme or reason to this. On a single roll that has been downloaded all at once, same format , everything's the same, some photos work in edit, others don't.

    Steve
The question mark means that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you changed, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder ?
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
Another possibility is the the database is corrupt, and you can check for this by rebuilding the database: restart iPhoto holding down the option and apple keys. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild the database. However, be aware if you have been active in the iPhoto Library Folder this will not solve that problem.

  • Photo will not open to edit...get a triangle error

photo will not open to edit...get a triangle error

This indicates a disconnect between the Thumbnail and the original
this can be caused by two things
1 - User action deleting items from inside the iPhoto  library - can be directly - can be from the All images list (never delete from there) - can be from running cleanup software like MacKeeer, CleanMac2  or other dangerous, defective software that improperly deletes or changes things in the to library - if you have done any of these things you must restore your backup from before you ran them and damaged your iPhoto library - and I recommend getting rid of them ASAP (although being essentially MalWear it is not easy)
2 - corruption of the iPhoto library - IIf it is not #1 then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your database

  • I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.  The upgrades indicate they were successful but I still get an error message when I try to open I-Photo telling me I need to prepare the library

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.  The upgrades indicate they were successful but I still get an error message when I try to open I-Photo telling me I need to prepare the library

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been  running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.

  • Thumbnail is fine, but photo won't open

On my first gen iPhone, with the latest firmware update, 2.x.x, I have the following problem.
A percentage of my photos won't open. All of the thumbnails are fine. But when I open the photo to full screen, I just get a black screen. I can select to go to the next or previous photo, but only some of them will view full screen, the rest are black. The ones I take with the camera all will open. Its just the ones that I import from iTunes/iPhoto. I also have an iPod classic, and all of these photos open fine on it. So not sure what the problem is.

Here are a couple of articles from the apple support website that might help out.

You might need to reset and or restore the iphone to resolve any software issues.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have ipad wi-fi cellular.  Photos won't open when I insert the SD Reader.  I tried syncing photos through itunes and that didn't work either. What do I need to do to get photos on ipad?

Have ipad wi-fi cellular.  Photos won't open when I insert the SD Reader.  I also can't download photos from pc through itunes.  Need help getting pictures on ipad.

For the SD card, are you copying the photos onto it yourself from your computer ? If you are then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.
In terms of syncing photos, what happens when you try ? You should be able to sync photos by connecting your iPad to your computer and selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side selecting the Photos tab - using that tab you should be able to select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

  • Photos in library when I open, but won't open in edit?

When I open iphoto all my photos are there, but when I double click to open into edit they won't open - also when I checked to see if a photo would open from DESKTOP PREFERENCES as DESKTOP PHOTO, photo wouldn't open and lost ability to open any photo (as desktop photo) from library. All photos are definitely in the PICTURES FOLDER in IPHOTO LIBRARY FOLDER. All this started happening yesterday when I was rearranging/trashing/renaming with BRIDGE/PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS?

    F:
The problem isn't with the iPhoto application it's with the library folder and the contents. The database file has been corruputed so what you are probably facing is creating a new library and importing the Originals folder from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?

  • Edit in iphoto 11 just duplicates the photo but won't open the edit tools.  How can I fix this?

When I try to edit a photo in iphoto, I select a photo and click on the edit button but all it does is duplicate the photo and doesn't give me any editing tools.  How can I fix this?
I have tried exporting a photo, importing it again but the same thing happens.

Thanks Terence.  This solved my problem.  I am using iphoto 11. For some reason it was set to edit in a different place, but I don't remember ever changing it.  You are a  legend

  • Photo won't open - but can see thumbnail

    Hello all,
First off the bat, this is my mother's computer and I have no idea what to do with a mac, I've always used a PC. I've asked her about it & she's looked into it with me but we can find no answer. Mom had updated iPhoto to 5.0.4, and wanted to buy me a photo album as a gift. I could design it, blah blah blah, long story shorter - While saving an edit, iPhoto froze & I had to close it. When I opened it again, I have the tumbnail of the picture I was editing, but the picture itself won't open, and in the album it's got one of those beautiful exclamation points over it. In the information box, other pics have a size of 2201x1709, but this one is 0x0. I really liked this picture. What in the world is going on?
Oh, and after all this happened, Mom told me that I should have duplicated all the pictures. I still don't understand that. HELP!!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I can't tell you that for sure. I am guessing that the edited photo was not saved, but the original was still there in the iPhoto Library (not visible to you though)
You can navigate to the proper folder in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to check and see if it is there. Do not touch or move anything though, just look and see if it is there.
The following link will show how the Library is organized in the Finder. If you know the year and day the photo was taken it should be easy to find.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Photos won't open using individual URLs

Hello. I have this photo page in my site. Every time I double-clicked one picture it opens the slideshow page (where I can see the photos appear one at a time), so there, I try to copy that photo URL and open it in a new window, but that won't take me to the specify picture I wanted, it would take me to the page where photos are displayed as thumbnails. Can I actually open individual photos using their own URL? or I am doing something wrong?
    Any help is appreciated.

Bring up the larger photo and Control-click on it. In the Contextual menu will the be the option to copy the URL for that photo.

  • HT5129 Migrated photos won't open iPhoto [9.3.2] in folder "From Mobile Me"

Albums from Mobile Me appear in iTunes [9.3.2] folder  "From Mobile Me" however the photos in one of the albums won't open. They show up in thumb nails but when they are clicked on a black screen appears. Pictures in other albums open without a problem. Help plse!

Thanks. Once ImageCapture had accessed the photos, THEN iPhoto began to pick up the data, so I was ultimately able to do both. It only worked with the cable, though, not the card readers. Weird.
And I really appreciate the ImageCapture tip. Any idea why it worked?

  • Photo won'[t open in elements 5

i have been successfully using elements 5 since it came out ( last with xp). I recently upgraded to vista, downloaded/installed the patch and have been successfully using elements 5 for about a month. however now it has started to open as normal but when I try to open a photo it just keeps acting like it is loading but the photo doesn't open( have left it go on for 5-10 min). if I go to the top bar (for closing etc) it stops responding. I can open the same files from lightroom 2 ( had that about 3+ weeks) but if I try to export them to elements they won't open there, it just keeps acting like it is working( it worked fine before). this is for all photos, those on my c and external drives( can open them otherwise just not in elements)
I have tried to repair elements, uninstalled and reinstalled twice and still can't open any photos. any ideas? a few days ago i installed the lightroom 2 update( .1 i think) but the lightroom seems to be working fine so don't really think that is doing it..otherwise haven't downloaded anything new. Thanks

    Hi Janet,
Are you working on Editor/Organizer. You might want to delete the preferences file - you can do this by launching the welcome screen, hold Shift+Alt+Control and click on Editor button. You would be prompted to delete the preferneces file and click ok. It might now work for you.
You mentioned that Elements worked fine for a month and is not working now?
Since you have tried re-installing and freezing error help, and the above workaround does not work for you, you could try doing a system restore which should help.
    Cheers.

    Adobe Photoshop Elements 9

  • Photos won't let me edit my photos.  The adjustment controls black out when I click on "Edit".

Photos no longer let me edit my photos.  When I click on the "Edit" button, the controls on the right side would appear, but they are darkened out and cannot be selected. Please help.

deleting them may be what gave you the mess.. I am torn- if I give bad advice at this point, going into the realms o knowledge where I am a newcomer might get me yelled at.
If it were me, and I was impatient for a cure, I would open iPhoto, connect the memory, open two finder windows- and from the window showing the memory with the saved pics on the external, drag to the finder window showing iPhoto, the pieces you had deleted, and see if they can get back into place and act like they were never moved.
The only other thing I can think of would be make a back up of all of iPhoto, then delete it completely and download a replacment, and never mess with the library again. HOWEVER: I do not know if apple condones or allows that- so you maybe need to get to a genius appointment at an apple store near you, or try to do the phone help.
Like I said- I have seen many warnings to not mess with the memory of iPhoto.... I guess this is an example of WHY.
I apologize that I do not have an easy way out of your nightmare.
