PhotoBooth not working.

Hey all :-)
I can't get Photobooth to work. I launch the app and the window shows up normally, but the iSight doesn't seem to be activating - no green light next to the actual camera on the lid, and no image in the Photobooth window, either. I even tried waiting a little while, because past experience has shown that sometimes it takes a few moments to initialize, especially if I've got tons going on. But, no luck. I found a forum thread (elsewhere) where somebody had the same problem, but before he got a reply he reported that after a night in sleep mode it was working okay again. The problem is I would prefer not to wait that long if possible; I could really use the thing tonight :-/
I'm on a late '07 whitebook running 10.6.8. Any advice appreciated :-)

•  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
try again.  If the iSight still does not work, continue.
• If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (are you certain that you
used the correct "reset" procedure?), yours is most likely a
hardware problem that will require a professional fix.
Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
• If you want to try one more thing on your own first,
use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then
download and apply the latest Combo Update for
your OS.  Currently, the latest SL Combo is here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
• Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
   that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, get help from your AASP.  There are no user serviceable parts of iSight hardware.

ipad photobooth not working, shows curtain closing but camera seems to be off

Have you tried closing the Camera app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with the Camera app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Camera app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Photobooth not working, can't take pictures/record videos!!! HELP!

I wanted to record a video for a friend and it says to connect the camera but the built isight is not even detected and, I tried checking other applications that use the isight camera and none of them detect it...HELP PLEASE!

If you get no better answer from iNtel Mac users, disconnect all peripherals (except your modem & router, if you use one,) restart your MacBook, and quit all apps but the ONE you are testing while trying to solve your problem. The try the following possible fixes:
    (1) Try the easiest thing first. Test immediately following your restart to see whether your built-in iSight works now. Sometimes merely restarting your Mac will restore its function.
    (2) If restarting does not resolve your problem, repair permissions using Disk Utility and test again to see whether that is the problem. If you have difficulty finding DU, use your Finder > Go > Utilities menu command to look in your "Utilities" folder.
For more details, search your Mac's Disk Utility > Help for "Repairing disk permissions" (without the quotation marks,) or look at this kBase article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
Repair permissions and then check to see if your camera works correctly.
    (3) If you still have a problem, follow all of Apple's iSight troubleshooting recommendations:
     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The "PMU reset" suggested there can sometimes resolve iSight problems.
    (4) If the problem remains, you can try the following:
      • Backup all important files.
      • Repair permissions.
      • Download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update.
        http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_6_ComboUpdate
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that completes the install.
      • Test your iSight again to see if it works now with more than one app.
Using the above process to apply the Combo Updater sometimes solves strange problems, especially if you normally use your Mac's Software Update... to update Mac OS.
    (5) If your iSight works after propelry applying the Combo Updater, reconnect your disconnected peripherals and check again. (To eliminate the possibility of a conflict with one individual peripheral, I reconnect peripherals one-at-a-time, testing between each reconnection.)
    (6) If your built-in iSight still does not work with any app or show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
One of the above will get your iSight working again.

  • Facetime & Photobooth Not Working

The camera on my Macbook Air is not working. I just got it a couple of days ago. I try to go on Facetime and the camera doesn't come on. I then tried Photo Booth and it still wouldn't work. Is there anyway I can fix this?

Sounds like a hardware problem that needs to be looked at and serviced by qualified personel.

  • Reinstalling bundled software (PhotoBooth) not working

I have an iMac G5. Some of the bundled software that came with it was deleted. It is now running Mac OS X (10.4.10). The person who used to use this computer before me, brought me the first install disk (for some reason, this person brought both install disks home and lost the second one) which has the bundled software. When I try to install the software, it says it can't be installed on this computer. I'm thinking it's because I've upgraded the OS. I don't want to reinstall the old OS as it will wipe out my hard drive as well as all my programs, which I'm not in the mood to reinstall (I have way too many programs and no time at work).
    Are there any suggestions?
    Thanks

If you are certain that you have the correct disks, and if the G5 iMac came with OS X 10.4.x (Tiger),
    • Repair permissions (click here if you need help.)
    • Then try installing the apps again.
    • Carefully follow the instructions for reinstalling applications in the Mac's user manual (guide.) It should work.
    • Restart the computer if necessary when the install is completed.
    • Finish with another permissions repair.
If you are certain that you have the correct disks, but the G5 iMac came with OS X 10.3.x (Panther),
    • Try using Pacifist to extract and install the files from your original disks. This is not as easy as using Apple install disks, but Pacifist should work for you if you follow the instructions carefully.
    • If you need more help or an example, detailed instructions for using Pacifist to reinstall iChatAV 2 are given in this User Tip.
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607457
    • To install other applications, you will need to navigate to their respective ".app" files different from the iChat one referred to in Ryan's Tip.
FYI and future use, too, I suggest that you permissions repair before and after installing anything that asks for your "Administrator" password.
By the way, as explained in the first of the iMac G5 (iSight): Frequently Asked Questions, Photo Booth was bundled only with new Mac computers that had built-in iSights. If Photo Booth is your only concern, I know of NO legal way to get Photo Booth other than by buying a Mac with a built-in iSight or upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Leopard includes version 2 of the Photo Booth app.
If you need to post back, please specifically identify which iMac you have.

  • Photobooth not working with iSight

I opened Photobooth, and the window says "Camera off". I have an iSight camera hoooked up and it works fine with iChatAV. I turned off iChatAV and it still doesn't work. I deleted the Photobooth plist but that didn't help. Am I doing something wrong?

Never mind. Pilot error. I pulled and then reinserted the iSight camera and it worked with Photobooth..

  • Broken Webcam/ Photobooth not working

So there's a little green light to the right of the built in webcam to my macbook and it's always on, but when I open Photobooth, all I see is a black screen. I've tried shutting my macbook on and off and restarting and stuff but no matter what I do, nothing works. I don't think it's broken -- or if it is I don't know what I could have done to break it since I've really only had my macbook for like a week and barely moved it, except to carry it from my desk to my room on a few occasions. Any ideas on what could be happening and how I could fix it? Thanks a lot!

I just solved my own problem, and maybe that of the original poster. Just turned the computer off and on again. I had already tried Restarting but the hard reset did the trick. Clearly the webcam thought some other app was using it (which is why the green light was on all the time). Strange that this still happened after a Restart but anyway now I am a happy Skyper again.

  • Video not showing up in preview screen on iMovie & Photobooth not working

Its like all of a sudden a bunch of video programs on my Mac have stopped going.
I am running OSX Lion 10.7.3
I have recently installed Elgato Video Capture and have been recording old VHS tapes and editing in iMovie. Was having no problems at first. Then the picture in the preview screen disappeared, the sound was still going, then that went too. I am wondering if Elgato video capture has something to do with it..
When I go to old videos, they play fine.
I also noticed the camera wont load in photobooth anymore.
If anyone has any information on this or knows how to fix it, that would be great! Thanks

Had same problem on iPad. Go to settings. Look under privacy. Make sure you turn on iMovie under the photos heading. Might also need to enable location services for iMovie. Now I can see camera roll from iMovie.

  • ISight not working with Webex, GoToMeeting or Lync...BUT works with Skype, Facetime, Photobooth (June 2013 MBA)

Brand new MacBook Air (June 2013, 8MB RAM, 500GB SSD)
iSight not working with Cisco Webex, Citrix GoToMeeting or Microsoft Lync (error = webcam not detected); BUT iSight works with Skype, Facetime and Photobooth.
3 hours of phone support with Webex - no luck.
Tried SMC and PRAM reset - no luck.
Tried erasing disk and reinstalling OSX 10.8.4 and apps manually with latest versions - no luck.
Apple phone support says it's not Apple's problem because Apple apps work.
Exchanged at Apple Store for another new MacBook Air, again installed apps manually with latest version (not from time machine) - STILL NO LUCK!!!
Is there an update Apple or Cisco, Citrix and Microsoft need to put out for the new MBAs or do I just have 2 lemons???

    You're welcome.

It will be interesting to see what the vendors say about using a Mac-compatible external webcam.
If not, some netbook or other Windows® device might offer compatibility at a much lower cost than a compatible Apple notebook.
We will watch for your update(s).  What the vendors tell you will be very helpful to others who share this or similar issues with their new MBAs.

  • Camera not working in Photobooth-in use by other application or not connect

Upon entering photobooth, the internal camera is reported to be either in use by another application or not connected. It doesn't appear to be working in other applications either. Any suggestions?

Does the camera have a setting for plain old DV output. (and 4.3 three if you don't want it Letter-boxed)
iChat tends not to see anything else from Firewire cameras.
Have you tried Shutting down the Computer and restarting ?
Do a full shut down and use the power Button to Restart (not the Restart Option)
If that does not work, then try the second part of this FAQ by Gulliver

It suggest running the CRon Scripts with OnyX or Cocktail (MacJanitor unfortunately does not work in Leopard) The others come as Trials and do other things.

  • HT2090 iSight Not Working? W/Skype and PhotoBooth

    Hello All,
My iSight camera isn't working with Skype, or PhotoBooth. I am running  Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The only time I can get the camera to work is after resetting the SMC. The camera will work for a skype session, but then the next time I go to skype, it does not work, and I have to reset the SMC all over again to make it work.
    Does anyone have any fixes?
    Thanks,
    -G

    (0)  Your problem might be a bad Skype install.
Reinstall the latest Skype version that is compatible with your Mac OS.
If the problem persists, consider the following:
    (1) When you tried Apple's suggestions, IF, in EVERY user account you tested, the Apple apps also exhibited the problem (i.e., start an Apple app session, quit that app, and try an Apple app again BEFORE you launch Skype,) your Mac OS software may be damaged.
Properly applying the latest COMBO update for your Mac OS can sometimes correct software problems.  Here is how I do it:
    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the latest Combo Update, for your Mac OS,
the current one is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1400
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
If the COMBO update did not resolve your problem, reinstall Mac OS X.  Then apply the Combo Update again before testing your iSight's operation.
If your problem continues after proper reinstall, make a current backup, and then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
    (2) When you tried Apple's suggestions, IF, in EVERY user account you tested, your problem ONLY occurs after you have launched Skype, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
    Start here:  https://support.skype.com/
You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.
If no other Skype help works, you can sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.
