Photocasting - do I need .mac ? do my recipients need iphoto 6 ?

I've had a quick look but didn't find the exact answers to the following questions :
1) Do I need a .mac account for Photocasting to work ?
2) Do my recipients need iPhoto 6 ? Can I Photocast to an XP computer ?
Yes. You need to publish to a .Mac account.

Your viewers need any RSS software or compatible browser. If they are Mac users your image files can be stored in their iPhoto 6 Library.

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

Do I need iPhoto 08 to see and use the mobileme features?
I currently have the iPhoto (ver 6) that came with my Mac Pro. I have a lot of expensive photo editing software on my mac that I do graphic design with so spending $80 on the iLife upgrade seems like a waste of $$ to me. I would however like to use the Mobile Me icon that appears in the Mobile Me demos to move photos to and from my iPhone 3G as well as the Mobile Me website. Do I have to upgrade to iLife 08 to get this or can I make this work with iPhoto 6?

iPhoto does not need to be part of this at all, but if you want it to be then you'll need iPhoto 08.

Once photostream pictures are downloaded onto my mac will they stay in iPhoto forever after i have deleted them off of my phone?
When I synced my iPhone I my Mac , it automatically created a file called photo stream and imported all photos from phone into that file on my Mac.
Do you mean the "Photo Stream" album in the "Web" section of iPhoto? Like shown here?
If that is the only place where you are seeing your photos, in "my Photo Stream" in the "Web" section of Photo, then you need to copy these photos to an event to import them into the library.
The Photo Stream album is only showing you what currently can be imported from iCloud, and the photos will vanish after a month, so you are having a limited time to grab them.
If you have enabled "Automatic Import" in iPhoto's Photo Stream Preferences, it should already have created an event "July Photo Stream" and other monthly events with the photos from the streams. What find in these monthly events has been savely imported.

I have a 10.8.5 and need iphoto 9.whatever to order photo books but can't upgrade iphoto or the os unless I get a new computer is there a work around?

<Email Edited By Host>Mac OS X does not offer a Clean install option. If by clean install you mean erasing the system, that is not recommended unless:
1. You bought a used/refurbished Mac and there is software on it without any accompanying discs, and it is older than July 20, 2011 in model release:

Or if it is at or newer, then erase it if it has applications installed that would not have been prebundled with it and you have no CDs for those applications.
You don't want someone else's software keys, or accounts, or to be running unlicensed software. At and newer Macs offer a built-in internet restore for their software with a command-R boot that lets you erase the system with Disk Utility, and then install from the internet the latest operating system.
2. You have a hardware issue and want to eliminate possible software issues as the cause when troubleshooting a problem all at once.
Issues affecting a new install have to be isolated before you attempt it. Unless you know it is software or hardware, erasing may only mask other problems. -
My yosemite mac crashes when I open iphoto
Hello,
My problem is that as soon as I open iPhoto I can se my iphoto app for 2 seconds and then either the screen goes black or the screen splits in two and all the pixels go out of place and I have to restart it because it turns into a brick. I was part of the developer program for Yosemite and I had this problem before but a new update fixed it. I have upgraded to the official OS X Yosemite. So I guess the problem came back or it wasn't fixed. One time when I restarted I had a message saying that my graphics processor crashed, so far every other app works fine, like quicktime, safari (youtube), vlc player.
Do I need to wait for a new update or do I have to fix something on my mac?

I updated my MAC to Mavericks and purchased iPhoto 9.5. Installed iPhoto; however when I try to open iPhoto I receive The folling, "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first must be prepared. To prepare use iPhoto Library Upgrade". I have have downloaded and installed the upgrader, with no success.
I need to add that I am a senior and am not as computer savey as I should be. Therefore, i really need step by step help.After you download the upgrader, you will need to go to your Applications folder and find the Utilities folder.
In there will be the iPhoto Library Upgrader (version 1.1). Open the application and follow the instructions. Should get you going. -
I have a new mac book air and somehow iPhoto was installed twice. Also, a second library was created and it became the default library. I attempted to switch to the original library but it won't open. what can I do to revert to the old library?
Both iPhotos open to a default library (#2) which has 300+ photos, I attempted to "switch to library" under the file tab in iPhoto and tried to choose "other library" which had most of my photos. When I attempt to open it, it doesn't do anything. I can see it and there are 2 libraries but it won't open.
Have you tried to open your old iPhoto library by double-clicking it directly, instead of using the File menu? That should work, if you are running iPhoto '11 and the library has been created by that version or an older version. DO you get an error message, if you select the library directly in the Finder?
I checked and it is the latest version of iPhoto.
Is it iPhoto '11, version 6.0.5? "Latest version" is ambiguous, because it will depend on your system version.
Where is your iPhoto Library stored? -
What has happened? Where is my iPhoto and why are my photos now in Photos? This *****. The whole reason I bought a Mac was the ease of iPhotos. Horrible. Bad move.
iPhotos is still in your Applications folder. The iPhoto Library is still in your /Home/Pictures/ folder.

I have all the documents, but can't locate my discs - need iphoto and can't get without the original.
If you buy used you have to be careful. I am not sure what software came with which system versions and which computers but the iLife application history is complex. If you end up looking for "original" discs such as those that came with your computer, make sure iPhoto was part of it, and make sure the discs you buy are really identical to the ones for your computer model. A lot of people sell gray colored discs as installer discs, but the versions are machine specific so getting any old Tiger installer may not work on your computer. Unfortunately the universal Tiger installer may not have iPhoto. Maybe somebody more familiar with the iPhoto history can provide specific advice.
An alternative is to look for a used iLife series that will work on your computer. Again, this will have to be used. Apple's staying ahead of the curve basically means those of us with old machines are left to fend for ourselves as best we can. -
Complete newbie.. do i need iphoto?
we got my daughter an ipod video 30 gb... but we are all newbies... she wants to download photos.. do we need different software? or is it ready to go? i can't seem to tell.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you don't need iPhoto. You can place the photos you want to upload to the iPod in an aptly name folder, I use Nano Pics, located where every is good for you. Then in iTunes under the Photo section, navigate to that folder and select it for syncing with the iPod. -

That doesn't work for full version upgrades such as 9.0. It will work to go from 9.0 to 9.2.1.
