Photographer upgrading from Dual 2.5Ghz to 8 core

Hi there. I hope someone can help me with this dilemma. I am a photographer who has been working with jpg's since the inception of digital photography. I am now at the point where I want to switch to RAW (bigger better files) as memory and storage prices now make this an affordable option.
The machine I have at the minute is a dual 2.5Ghz with 4.5Gb of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9800 256MB graphics card. It is just a bit slow when processing RAW in Adobe Lightroom to the point where I'm always waiting for it to catch up with my adjustments of large batches of files.
The question is --- will an 8 core Mac Pro make a big difference and if yes then what would be the ideal configuration be to make it work the fastest?
After reading the post by Badlydrawnboy and in-depth answers, I think it is a no-brainer as to how to arrange disks. So I guess this question is all about machine specs.
Any help appreciated.
Al

Having moved from the quad G5 to this machine i have noticed a large improvement in speed, particularly in Aperture. The graphics card determines to a large extent the performance of Aperture. So if moving to the MacPro, order the x1900. Stripe 0 your library across 2/3 of the internal drives (WD Raid edition 2's with 500 or 750GB'ers).
My test raw file took ~2m20s to render full screen and on my MP its 20s. If you edit in Aperture mostly in order of the adjustments showing within the HUD you will be very impressed.
Intel will be launching new procs within the next 6 months, with a 1600MHz Front side bus, over todays octo xenon's 1300MHz and more on-chip cache. If they make their way into MP's then there should be another speed bump.
But its an if/or when scenario. Today's octo MP is quite a beast and i'm hoping the core-swapping of Tiger is improved with Leopard. Also hope that Aperture's next release becomes more threaded (unlike search's solo-core task!).
I can heartily reccommend the MP and in particular the octo for Aperture and video work. Read the forums for optimal memory configuration, particularly Hatters and Ned's comments.

  • Upgrading From Dual Core to Quad Core on an MSI 7246 Power Up Edition

    Good day folks.
I'm upgrading a dual core Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (3.46 GHz) to a quad core Intel QX6800 Extreme Edition (2.93 GHz) which my MSI-7246 Power Up Edition is supposed to support.
I'm running Windows XP with all the latest patches installed.
Are there any special procedures I need to follow to accomplish this without a hitch? I.E., I certainly do no want to have to reinstall the OS.
I've read a couple of posts which talk about deleting the processor entries which are now correctly listed in Device Manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I forgot to add, clear CMOS wouldn't hurt before you start it up after the CPU change.
OK. Will do. Sounds like good advice.
    Appreciate the tip.
EDIT: As a follow-up the upgrade went smoothly except for loading the drivers for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th cores. It took me a couple of hours but I finally discovered a work around. Basically, I had to try and manually pick a driver. With Windows XP the list presented under Intel did not contain the one I wanted. However, by picking another one and then bailing at the confirmation window it would somehow put the right one in for a given core.

  • Trying to upgrade from dual 500MHz to single processor

    Question 1
My Mac G4 GE has a dual 500 Mhz processor installed. Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor or do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    Question #2
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mhz Bus or maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
    Thank you guys

    Hi-
Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor
    Yes.
do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    No.
maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
The processor will run at stated speed.
Any hardware that is faster or more powerful than the component being replaced will enhance performance.
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mh
RAM is the only thing that will not be upgradeable, as far as speed. Larger capacity is no problem, and will help performance.
Of course, all upgrades are relative to the bus speed and throughput on the bus. As compared to a faster system, the performance won't be as high overall.
But, this is comparing apples to oranges......

    Dear all,
I would like to ask you if it possible to replace my retired MS-7222 motherboard with a new generation motherboard certified for Windows 8 (supporting Intel Core i3 or Pentium D) without the need of replacing also the peripherals (hard disk, power supply, DVD, Screen, keyboard, mouse).
    Thank you in advance,

In modern times, SATA drive is considered an IDE drive. IDE Mode of the modern controller - IDE, AHCI, RAID. IDE relates to both PATA and SATA drives. Terminology can be misleading at times.
A SATA drive is not an IDE drive.
Many people get fooled by a Windows "legacy".
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
If AHCI is not enabled by the motherboard and chipset, SATA controllers typically operate in "IDE emulation" mode
Windows device drivers that are labeled as SATA are often running in IDE emulation mode unless they explicitly state that they are AHCI mode,
in RAID mode, or a mode provided by a proprietary driver
In any case, you are right: "The PATA (flat cable) devices will not work on the newer boards".

I upgraded from a 1st generation to a 4th generation time capsule (model A4109) and since then my pay TV wireless transmitter has pulsating interference.  This is obviously due to the new dual band  frequency of the TC.  Is there any way I can set it to one band and what will that do?

Go in and manually set the wireless channel for 2.4ghz or 5ghz (whichever your av sender is).. try different channels.

  • PI system upgrade from 7.1 to 7.4 dual stack

    Hi,
We want to upgrade PI system to 7.4 .currently we are using PI 7.1 system (dual stack)and want to go for 7.4 dual stack.
which one single stack or dual stack is the best approach and what are the impacts normally see when upgrading  to newer version.
We are planning to install 7.4 freshly recomonded by SAP .
We need to migrate objects from older system to newer system?
I want to know the process from basis perspective also .
Import/export or migrate is the best way to move objects from older sytem to newer system.
Please suggest me any links about the process including basis point of view also suggestions for the approach.
    thanks,

    >>>> which one single stack or dual stack is the best approach and what are the impacts normally see when upgrading  to newer version.
I would prefer single stack considering the SAP's future road map but of course it depends on how much effort your company is ready to spend. Incase you have lot of CCBPM's then you'll have to redesign them using Netweaver BPM if you go with single stack.
As are going with fresh installation(migration) of dual stack then you don't need to invest much.
    >>>  We are planning to install 7.4 freshly recomonded by SAP .

There is wizard using which you can move the directory objects ( classical scenario's to Integrated configurations). Please use it for ID objects
Refer to the below blog for more details. (ignore blog's title. it's applicable for dual stack-> dual stack too)
Moving Integration Directory Artifacts from dual stack to single stack
For ESR you can simply export and import the tpz file.

They can simply follow the installation guide and execute the post installation steps properly.

  • Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on a G5 Dual processor early 2004 version

I am about to upgrade my OS from Tiger (10.4.11) to the newest version of Leopard on my Dual G5 PPC. I have an ATI Radeon X800 XT video card as well as a third party PCI firewire card added. 3.5G of RAM.
Should I expect any bumps or issues when upgrading? Also, will my system perform the same, slower or faster after install?
I am a heavy user of Aperture, Photoshop as well as Final Cut Express. I will be installing the newest version of Fotomagico once 10.5 is set up.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Pete

You should verify that all your critical software can run under Leopard or that there are upgrades available. Check with which version of Leopard the software is known to be compatible, and don't install a later version of Leopard.
    Otherwise I suggest reading this:
Essential Steps Before Updating OS X!
Please do things right before updating OS X in order to avoid problems.
    A. Repair Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means your backup drive (should be erased first.)
Source means your startup drive or volume.
    C. If you are installing a new version of OS X such as upgrading from 10.4.x to 10.5.x, then I suggest you do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
    D. Download the Standalone Combo Updater from Apple.
Be sure you quit all running applications and disconnect all peripherals (except original keyboard and mouse) before running the installer. When the installer is running do not use the computer in any way other than to respond to an installer dialog.
Install the update by double-clicking on the installer package icon. When the installation is completed Restart the computer. Your computer will boot twice - this is normal. Upon completion of the update use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Not all permissions will seem repaired. You will get spurious reports regarding permissions related to iTunes, Front Row. These can be ignored. They will appear every time you repair permissions.
Following these basic steps should prevent most if not all updating problems. Note that if you have unrepairable disk problems reported in Step A then DO NOT update your system until those problems are resolved.

  • Upgrade From The $9.99 Photographer's Deal-

If I take advatage of the $9.99 deal and then at some point in the future have temporary need of Illustrator or InDesign or some other Adobe program, will I be able to upgrade to the full Creative Cloud for a month or two until the job is finished and still be able to go back to the $9.99 deal?
I don't often use anything other than Photoshop and Lightroom but I would hate to lock myself out of ever being able to take advantage of the latest features of other Adobe programs…

    Hi danocamera2
    Thanks for your question.
While it's possible to upgrade from a single app membership to complete Creative Cloud, it's not possible to then downgrade from complete to single app.   You could cancel the complete plan & sign up for the single app plan again but the $9.99 Photoshop Photography program is only available until 31 December 2013.
If you feel you would only have a temporary need for other programs you could sign up for a month-to-month membership for these programs as and when required and keep your Photoshop/Lightroom plan.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks
    Bev

  • Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz won't boot

    Hi,
I've recently started having issues with my dual 2.5GHz G5 Powermac. When I switch it on I can hear the drives start up and data being read from them. But there's never any chime and the screen stays black. The drives stay quiet (spinning but no data being read). After a minute or two the fans ramp up to full speed.
If I leave it off for a while (eg. overnight) it resolves itself somehow and boots up without any issues. Once it's booted up there are no issues at all and it will run fine for weeks and days, until it needs to be rebooted again. I just put it to sleep when I'm not using it and it wakes up fine.
I've tried the following without any success:
    - unplugging all peripherals (usb + firewire etc)
    - reseating the ram
    - swapping out the ram
    - trying to boot into open firmware (it won't get that far)
    - resetting the pmu with the button on the motherboard
    - installed the latest updates to os x
    - reseated the graphics card
    - replaced the battery on the motherboard with a brand new one
This started roundabout the time I upgraded to 10.5.5 though that could be a coincidence. I also cleaned dust from the inside of the machine at that time as well (including off the graphics card fan and heatsink which was getting clogged up). So, that may have caused it. But again it could just be a coincidence.
Does anyone have any suggestions? All fans and both fans spin up, so I don't think it's the PSU, but I could be wrong. My only thought at the moment is a possible problem with one of the drives. So, I could try installing to a firewire drive and booting from that, but given that I can't even get into openfirmare, I'm not confident in that working. Similarly I don't have much hope of it booting from CD.
Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated
    Phil

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Upgrading from hub 2

How does one go about upgrading from hub 2.  I have been on 2 since they first appeared. Should it mean changing bb
option or whatl. Just curious and could be doing with a boost to my online systiem.
    Shylock

Why do you want to upgrade? Are you having problems with the HH2?
The wireless on the HH4 is dual band so if you have devices that can use 5GHz then they will be able to connect at that speed however the range of 5GHz can be less than the "normal" 2.4GHz.
You will not notice any difference with wired connection speeds or with the wireless 2.GHz speeds.
There are a number of posts on this forum about problems found and there are some posters who have gone back to using their previous Homehub. I would suggest you do a search of the forum before making a decision to "upgrade"
My advice would be if you are not having problems with the HH2 and you have no pressing need for the 5GHz frequency then stick with what you have got.
I am sure other forum members will tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread so it's up to you!

  • Upgrading from LH3 to LR5 has given me display problems

Since upgrading from LR3 to LR5 my photographs now look slightly posterised or metallic, but when I look in any other windows photo display they are fine. Does anyone know whats going on here and how I can get a correct display again.
I have also had to upgrade from Vista to Windows 8 to allow the new LR to operate, could that have an effect maybe?

    HI,
The issues would seem to be centralised on the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars items.
When this item is functioning then you can turn On and Off the "Accounts" for the Mail App and the Messages app in this pane.
    Example pic
This Mail, Contacts and Calendars Preferences Pane will be calling on saved data in a file ending in .plist
.plist files are held in ~/Library/Preferences
In Lion and Mountain Lion you have to access this in the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and typing the path in to the dialogue box.
Find and drag to the Trash (to delete) com.apple.CalendarAgent.plist and com.apple.AddressBook.plist
These two items seem to be updated when you change a setting in the Mail, Contacts an Calendars pane.
Another thing to check in the Contacts app > My Card
This used to be called the Address Book.
There can be issues with some apps if the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon) is not  your own Card.

It will.  I have exactly that same motherboard and I just upgraded from a clawhammer 3500 to an Opteron 175.  Update your BIOS to latest (1B I think) and you should be good to go.  Note that when I boot, if I don't go into the BIOS, it only sees one core.  But as I run Linux, I rarely ever have to boot.
    It will work though.

  • Issue with Supplier site descriptive flex field upgrade from 11i to R12

We ran into some issue when upgrade Supplier site descriptive flex field from 11i to R12.
In 11i. we defined descriptive field on JG_PO_VENDOR_SITES. in the segment definition, we defined one of the attributes default value based on Form Field Value, and the statement is like this:
SELECT decode(:SITE.COUNTRY,'IT','AP ITALIAN TRANSACTIONS','AP AUTOFATTURA') FROM dual
All above worked fine in 11i, whenever the flexfield field is open in forms, the default valuse shows based on the real-time value in :SITE.COUNTRY.
In R12, Supplier site management is in HTML format. There is no forms, which means no form value. Do you have an alternative soluction for implement the same logic in R12?
