Photopshop CS5 resizing images

Hi, I recently moved over from CS2 on windows to CS5 on Mac.  I am a photographer and design my own wedding albums.  My current issue is, that when I move images from one to another to create a montage, the images do not stay at their current size but instead automatically enlarged so that they fill the new canvas size (in fact they become greater than the canvas size).  This means I have to re-size every picture back into its oirginal size within the canvas to create the montage (the monatge being - an album page with multiple wedding pictures of various sizes designed on it).  I have tried changing numerous "property settings" within Photoshop, and particularly the "resize image during place" option, but not have been successful.  This never happened in CS2 so am not sure if its a bug in CS5?  Can anyone help as I have ran out of ideas how to solve this.  Many thanks

The resolution of the images is important since an image dragged from one image into the montage image will take on the resolution of the image its dropped into (the montage image).
For example, if your image is 300 ppi and you drag it into your montage image that is set at only 100 ppi the image will be a lot larger than you expected.
Also the pixel dimensions can be important regardless of the resolution. Something 2000x2000 pixels dragged into an image that is only 1500x1500 pixels will be larger than the canvas size even if the resolution is the same.

  • Why does Fireworks CS5 keep resizing images when I paste them?

    I am having a problem in Fireworks CS5 where images that are copied and then pasted into a new document automatically re-size and become either very tiny or very large.
    I have taken some screenshots to show this more clearly: (this website only allows me to upload images of 450 pixels across so they are not too clear)
    Image 1: I have taken a large image and reduced its size to 100x100 pixels (highlighted in red).
    Image 2: I have created a new document which is 100x100 pixels in size.
    Image 3: I have copied the image from Image 1 (control + C) and then pasted it into Image 2 (control + V). The image was 100x100 and the new image was 100x100 yet when I paste the image it suddenly becomes 313x313 in size and is too large for the new image. Sometimes it becomes tiny when pasted and is too small for the document.
    Can anyone help with this matter? Perhaps I am missing something obvious, but I have tried searching for solutions and tried a range of methods (different kinds of copy and paste etc), but nothing seems to help. Please let me know what I am missing!
    Thank you for your help! As I said I am using Fireworks CS5. I am using Windows 7. If there is anything else you want to know just let me know.

    I don't know what could be causing the copy/paste resizing issue, but here are a couple of ideas that may help with your workflow:
    You can create a new document for animation by choosing File > Open..., selecting multiple images, and clicking the "Open as Animation" option. This will place each image file into its own State.
    Consider using commands from the States panel fly-out menu—e.g., Duplicate State, Copy to States, etc.—to move objects from one state to another.
    Other commands to copy objects within Fireworks include Edit > Duplicate and Edit > Clone. These do not involve the clipboard and may sidestep the resizing problem.
    Sometimes with bitmaps, I like to convert them to symbols, as it allows me to resize the bitmap freely without losing the original resolution. (This might introduce extra steps, but it could allow you to correct the image size after it's been pasted incorrectly.)
    It's a longshot, but I wonder if it would help to empty the clipboard contents once in a while, to clear out old data.

  • Cannot resize images after CS5 and CC updates

    I recently installed Photoshop CC and the CC app recently updated  both my own CS6 and CC. I find that I now cannot resize images using the  "image size" dialog. Any changes I try to make in dimension or  resolution are ignored. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or  does anyone have any info which will help me discover what I am doing  wrong? Before, I simply entered the resolution and size I wanted for the  image. Now I cannot .I have tried suggestion here: e.g., deleting pixels when cropping, etc., but nothing seems to work for me.

    Thank you, Mylenium. Just curious... the CS5 update was done before I had
    the CC app. Some CS6 updates were done before I joined the CC (the CS5 in
    my problem subject-line was a type--should have been CS6), and one through
    the cloud. CC, of course, was all updated through the cloud. Am I to
    understand that CC would have done something to my owned, personal version
    of CS5, which has the same problem?
    Not an auspicious beginning with the cloud if complete
    uninstalls/reinstalls are necessary right off the bat. I wonder how often
    this type of problem will occur using the cloud, which obviously now
    monitors my personal version of CS6, as well.

  • Resizing Images in InDesign CS5

    Hi,
    I jumped from CS3 to CS5. In CS5, when I resize images they enlarge or decrease from the center and no longer resize from where my curser pulls from.  Is there a setting that I can change for the image to resize from my curser and not the middle of the image?
    Lindsey

    I'm goint to presume you mean you are grabbing a sizing handle and dragging. Behavior has not changed. The point opposite the one you grab should remain fixed and all others should be moving in or out (if you're holding the shift key) depending on which direction you drag. In this case the proxy doesn't affect things. Are you seeing something different, or doing something different?

  • PS CS5 importing images issue!

    Hi folks,
    i got a problem with ps cs5.
    I opened an 300 DPI A5 document and started to design it out.
    After some time i wanted to import some of my .png files into the composition.
    But then it happend, Photoshop boosted the size up of my image... its an 72DPI PNG and the old
    PS CS4 used to resize it correctly and I just could start to work with the original size of that image.
    for now I am very unhappy about this issue because I have to resize all those images again by hand.
    That means I lose quality and it takes a lot of time.
    Would be great if someone could tell me if I can workaround that problem somehow.
    thank you!
    Pete

    I can only imagine that Adobe got feature suggestions from people claiming that when they placed their different images together they would rather have automatic resizing per the ppi value, and not hearing praise from people like you just expecting a pixel to remain a pixel, they changed it without an option to keep it the old way.  I had high hopes that that checkbox in preferences would get you the older functionality back, but alas it isn't so.
    What is that [ ] Resize Image During Place checkbox supposed to do anyway, if not this?  A quick glance Help doesn't turn up much on this setting.  Maybe it's buried in there somewhere, but it's not popping out.
    I even tried placing images using all the combinations of modifyer keys I could think of.  That would have been a nice touch, but nope, it didn't work.
    A while back I started a thread in which I ended up actually catching some flak for asking that every change in user functionality be accompanied by a setting that allowed users to have things the old way if they desired.  This kind of situation is exactly what I had in mind, but people apparently have trouble thinking at this level.

  • AppleScript to resize images and save with new name

    I want to make an apple script, which resizes all images of a folder regardless what kind of filetype.
    The source folder will change every day.
    With the script i want to choose a source Folder, resize all images and save the files with my jpeg options in the same folder, but with adding  „_ipad“ in the filename.
    I tried to edit an existing script from this forum, but in Photoshop 5.1 i get the error-message "This function is possibly not available in this Version" in line 18 "save in file newFileName as JPEG with options myOptions"
    How can i save the documents with new name in the existing folder?
    Thanks.
    This is the script i’m working with:
    set inputFolder to choose folder with prompt "Wähle einen Ordner:"
    --set destinationFolder to choose folder with prompt "Wähle einen Zielordner" as string
    tell application "Finder"
              set filesList to (files of entire contents of inputFolder) as alias list
    end tell
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1"
              set UserPrefs to properties of settings
              set ruler units of settings to pixel units
              repeat with aFile in filesList
      open aFile showing dialogs never
                        set docRef to the current document
                        tell docRef
                                  set newFileName to my getBaseName(name)
      --resize image height 240 resolution 72 resample method bicubic sharper
      change mode to RGB
      resize image resolution 72
                                  set myOptions to {class:JPEG save options, embed color profile:true, quality:12, format options:progressive, scans:3}
      save in file newFileName as JPEG with options myOptions
                        end tell
      close the current document saving no
              end repeat
              set ruler units of settings to ruler units of UserPrefs
    end tell
    on getBaseName(fName)
              set baseName to fName
              repeat with idx from 1 to (length of fName)
                        if (item idx of fName = ".") then
                                  set baseName to (items 1 thru (idx - 1) of fName) as string
                                  exit repeat
                        end if
              end repeat
              return baseName
    end getBaseName

    This seems like a Photoshop error not an AppleScript one. Have you looked in the Photoshop dictionary to see if the command you are getting the error on exists and if it has those options?
    If all you want to do is resize image files and save the resized image file you might want to look at Automator. Specifically the Scale Image action under Photos.

  • Resize image code doesn't work for some JPGs

    Hi. I'm using the below code to resize images and store them on the server. However, with some JPGs, the resize produces a reddish tint on the image. Any ideas what could be causing this? Here's the original image: http://www.unctv.org/tWxkBbq_10M6wKRRL/PNCWWD01.jpg and here's what it produces afterward: http://www.unctv.org/tWxkBbq_10M6wKRRL/PABDFC01__1289231445291.jpg
    Photoshop CS5 is used to produce the JPG input for this app. Thanks.

    I don't know anything about the jpeg encoders, but I do see code that doesn't make any sense to me:
    Image resizedImage = null;
    int iWidth = image.getWidth(null);
    int iHeight = image.getHeight(null);
    // This code ensures that all the pixels in the image are loaded.
    Image temp = new ImageIcon(resizedImage).getImage();What is the point of creating an ImageIcon from a null image?
    int newWidth = (int)this.targetWidth;I don't see where you actually use this variable, so how does the image get resized?
    For more help create a [url http://sscce.org]SSCCE, that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour and maybe someone will take a look at it.

  • Does Photoshop CS6 autosharpen resized images?

    Hi all,
    I've been using Photoshop for my Photography for quite a long time and I have recently upgraded to Photoshop CS6. Whenever I resize my images in CS6, I get the feel (from looking at the images) that the application has autosharpened my images! I am quite sure about that effect because my resizing principles have remained the same since using CS5. And in CS5, whenever I resized to that same size I am resizing in CS6, I used to run the Unsharp Mask Filter to get my images look at their best! So there must be something going under the hood in CS6, or am I missing something obvious? Basically, I want to be in total control as to how much sharpness I want to apply to my resized images!!
    regards,
    Ali

    In fact Adobe added the new interpolation method Bicubic Automatic new in CS6  and Adobe change Adobe's default Photoshop's Interpolation preference setting to the new method.  However Adobe did not do a good job adding the new feature.  If you leave Photoshop Preference set to Bicubic Automatic you may run into problems if you use scripts that transform things. For if the script tries to retrieve,  change and restore your Photoshop Interpolation method Photoshop will wind up with an internal error.    There are many bugs in CS6 this is one Adobe has not address yet.
    Bicubic Sharper may work well on large un-sharpened soft images.  It does not work well on images that have been sharpened.
    Adobe scripts like the Fit Image Plug-in always uses Bicubic interpolation.   Layer Transforms prior to CS6 always used Photoshop Preference Interpolation method.  That is why the script I write retrieve this setting change it to Bicubic ,  transform then restore the Preference.   CS6 now let the user set the interpolation method for some forms of layer transforms not all.

  • Which approach to use for resizing image

    There are two ways of resizing images as I know:
    1. image.getScaledInstance(width,height,hint);
    Using hint like Image.SCALE_AREA_AVERAGING gives somehwat satisfactory resizing.
    2. static BufferedImage resize(GraphicsConfiguration gc, BufferedImage source, int w, int h, Object hintValue) {
    BufferedImage result = gc.createCompatibleImage(w, h, source.getTransparency());
    Graphics2D g2 = result.createGraphics();
    g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_INTERPOLATION, hintValue);
    double sx = (double) w / source.getWidth(), sy = (double) h / source.getHeight();
    g2.drawRenderedImage(source, AffineTransform.getScaleInstance(sx, sy));
    g2.dispose();
    return result;
    where the hint passed is RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BILINEAR ;
    Now which of the two method method should I use-using image.getScaledInstance() or using AffineTranform ? opr is there any other way which is faster but provides good result?
    i am creating an image editor, so the GUI dialog will have oprtion to choose the algorithm. I want the method which provides better result yet faster.

  • Need help on quality of resized image!!

    I am required to resize images to max 1240pixel (longest dimension) as a submission of work, though when work is viewed it will be at 30"x40".  Can not figure out a way to do this where images don't become quite pixelated when viewed at larger size.   Appreciate any suggestions.

    Is there some software to verify if my graphics card is shotty?
    Techtool Pro has some testing, the AHT tests VRAM, but game benchmarks and stressing will tell you the most.
    Is re-seating the graphics card or memory worth trying?
    Absolutely. Just don't reinstall the graphics card until you clean it thoroughly.
    Cleaning the dust out of my machine?
    YES. A dust filled graphics card heatsink will cause the GPU to cook, and cause problems thet you describe.
    If I need a new graphics card, what are my options? Do I have to purchase it via Apple store? I would like to stick with an Nvidia card so am I stuck buying the same card I currently have or can I upgrade?
    You don't have to buy from Apple, but using with OS X limits your choices to Mac compatible or flashable PC versions.
    There is an awful lot of user input into this topic here:

    I need some help resizing my images on PS6. I am using a mac and have been trying to resize with same resolution and constaining proportions but for some reaseon the smaller resized image appears pizelated. Heres an image of before and after. The first image I use is a JPG 72dpi 1500px x1500px and I want to downsize it to 600x600px same res, but it keeps pixelating, this has never happened before. Any suggestions, thoughts?
    thanks!

    I wouldn't say pixelated; more like blurry.
    Like ConnectedCreative said, what steps are you using? Are you using "bicubic sharper" when resizing down?

  • Upload and Resize Image not inserting filename in database

    I have a form that I created using the insert record form wizard. One of the fields is a file field and my form enctype is set to multipart/form-data. I then used the upload and resize image behavior and set the parameters. When testing the form the file uploads to the correct directory but no entry is made into the database for that particular field. The other fields are entered into the database just fine. If it helps, here is the code generated before the  tag:

    If the reason is about memory, warning message should be happened when upload the image, because "show thumbnail" means resize at second time, how come you failed to resize the picture that system let it upload succeed at the first time by the same resize process?
    upload procedure
    a.jpg: 2722x1814, 1.2mb
    upload condition: fixed width 330px, 1.5mb
    "upload and resize" a.jpg -> file upload -> "resize engine" -> passed (but not work and no warning message)
    "show thumbnail" a.jpg -> "resize engine" -> failed (not enough memory)
    it doesn't make sense.
    and you miss an important key point, I upload the same picture myself, and resize work, so I said it happened at random, and that's why I am so worried.

  • Resizing images published through flickr, but I don't want it to.

    I set up a flickr connection with LR3, very cool. However it resized the image to 1024x768, though I have nothing set under 'resize'. Why is it doing that?  Do I have to set it to resize everything to 9000 pix and not enlarge for it to keep the original size?

    Setting the resolution to 9000 x 9000 wont make any difference. Or at least it did not for me.
    It could be a limitation of Flickr (no Pro account). Perhaps it is different with a Pro account.size file is being uploaded if you dont resize on output but you wont see it if you dont have a Pro account.
    In fact, from the Flickr site: Only smaller (resized) images accessible (though the originals are saved in case you upgrade later)
    This would suggest that your original size file is being uploaded if you dont resize on output but you wont see it if you dont have a Pro account.

  • Problem with getting resized image's bytes

    I've got a problem with getting correct bytes of a newly resized image. The flow is that I retrive an image from the filesystem. Due to the fact that it is large I resize it to a 50x50px thumbnail. I can display this thumbnail in #benchmark1 (see code below). Unfortunately something's wrong with my imageToBytes funtion which returns reasonably small size of image but is totally useless - I can't make an image of it anymore so at #benchmark2 the application either crashes or keeps freezing. I saved this byte array on my disk and tried to preview under Windows how does it look but I got a message "Preview unavailabe". I did some digging in the Internet and I supposed that it's because I don't use any jpg or png encoders to save the file. Actually I think that it's not the case, as the bytes returned from method imageToBytes look weird - I cannot even make a new image of them and display it without any saving in memory.
                                  byte[] bytes = FileHandler.readFile (
                                          FileHandler.PHOTOS_PATH, fileName);
                                  Image img2 = Image.createImage (bytes, 0, bytes.length);
                                  img2 = ImageHandler.getInstance ().resize (img2);
                                                    //#benchmark1
                                  bytes = ImageUtils.imageToBytes (img2);
                                  img2 = Image.createImage (bytes, 0, bytes.length);
                                                    //#benchmark2my imageToBytes function is as follows:
         public static byte[] imageToBytes (Image img)
              int[] imgRgbData = new int[img.getWidth () * img.getHeight ()];
              byte[] imageData = null;
              try
                   img.getRGB (imgRgbData, 0, img.getWidth (), 0, 0, img.getWidth (),
                           img.getHeight ());
              catch (Exception e)
              ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream ();
              DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream (baos);
              try
                   for (int i = 0; i < imgRgbData.length; i++)
                        dos.writeInt (imgRgbData);
                   imageData = baos.toByteArray ();
                   baos.close ();
                   dos.close ();
              catch (Exception e)

    Hey Crawlie,
    Please note that simply writing int values into ByteArrayOutputStream will not suffice. Please have a look at the following conversion from int pixel value into byte[4]:
    public static final byte[] intToByteArray(int value) {
            return new byte[] {
                    (byte)(value >>> 24),
                    (byte)(value >>> 16),
                    (byte)(value >>> 8),
                    (byte)value
    }Good Luck!
    Daniel
