Photos and Folders Missing

I have Mac 13inch 10.6.8.
In Iphoto, I can't find my Originals Folders, I only have one folder for 2010. I use to have one for each year. Also so many of my photos have exclamation marks despite me using 'Convert to original' to find them. How can I find the Original Folders again? I also noticed many photos were missing in the Original Folder and my Master's Folder and the Modified.
Perhaps because I have several editing software ie. Lightroom 3 and Nikon's View NX2 and Photoshop could this be causing confusion to IPhoto? I like editing with all of them so is there a way to import and organise photos independently of Iphoto and all the other Software Programs. I am very confused with it all.
I have 9000 images in IPhoto
Thanks

NLouis

What version of iPhoto?
You're using two apps that do the same job - iPhoto and Lightroom - a third that does a similar job (NX2) and a photo editor (Photoshop).
Best advice: Cut that out!
There is no sensible, efficient workflow that uses all of iPhoto, Lightroom and NX2. All want to manage the photos, all are lossless processors who's work cannot be seen in any other app without first exporting to a new file. It really is akin to trying to write your Novel in TextEdit, Word and NisusWriter at the same time. It makes everything more complex and difficult. And yes, as all three want to manage the files it's quite possible that whatever you do in one will damage the work of the other two.
I cannot stress enough that the best advice I can give you is to pick one horse and ride it. It's no wonder you're confused.
And again, none of these three programs is an editor. They are all database apps that won't edit the original file. Only Photoshop is an actual editor.
So, my best advice: pick one, dump the other two - unless you pic NX2, in which case you probably need to dump photoshop as well.

    Hello dancetoday07,
Let's see if we can square this away for you. With backing up your iPhone, it will back everything you have using iTunes and if you use iCloud, by default, backs up everything. After you have made a backup you can restore that to put the contents of the backup on your replacement iPhone. If you want to put certain things back on, you will at least need to export the content to your computer, like your photos and videos. If you only want to put certain things back on, then you will need to sync that over with iTunes. All the information you will need are in the articles below.

  • Lost photos and folders during system upgrade

A while back, I upgraded to v 10.9.2 and ALL of my photos and folders within iPhoto vanished. How can I re-import them into my nice, little folders so I don't have to spend a week or more sorting through thousands of photos that span more than a decade?

It souns like you imported your old iPhtoo lbrary into the ew Phot = NEVER import a iPoto lbrary into iPhoto - it does not work and creates a massive mess
If this is what you did and you still have the original library available drag the bad library to the desktop and drag the original library to yoru pictures folder and launch iPhoto - depending on the old version you will tehn either launch iPhoto and upgrade the library or downloan, install and execture the library upgrader and then launch iPhoto to finish the upgrade

  • Albums and Folders missing on sidebar

In iPhoto I created Albums and Folders for various subjects on the iPhoto Sidebar.
One of these folders was for photos that I would display on AppleTV (first generation).
I don't see a way to duplicate custom Albums and Folders on the new Photos App.
I particularly want to re-create a folder for pics to be displayed on AppleTV.
Thanks for any ideas on this!

Do you have the sidebar in Photos activated? If not use the key combination of Option+Command+S to toggle it open and closed.
The Events in iPhoto at the time of conversion will be in a folder titled "iPhoto Events" and the albums under that folder.
You can create new folders and and albums with the File menu
drag whatever photos you need onto the album icon in the sidebar. Or select the photos and use the New Album menu option.

  • Some Aperture photos and projects missing from iLife Media Browser

Good evening - having a little bit of trouble getting Aperture to work smoothly with my iLife media browser (i.e., inserting photos into Mail, Pages, Keynote, etc).
I currently have 5699 photos and 131 projects in Aperture. But the iLife Media Browser only shows me 5131 photos and 130 projects; when clicking on individual projects in the browser, anywhere from 3 to 70 photos per project are missing. Tried repairing permissions, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database - this improved the issue, but didn't completely resolve it as 5679 photos now show in the Media Browser, and 20 remain missing. Also tried deleting, and generating previews for all my photos in the library. No change.
My library is mostly referenced, with a few photos managed.
Obviously in the grand scheme of things 20 photos missing in the Media Browser not that big a deal. But wanting to get to the root cause though because without solving this issue, I'm concerned about a larger underlying problem that may only get worse as my library grows.
Has anyone had, or resolved a problem similar to this? And can anyone offer any additional suggestions? Are there any specific files that feed the iLife Media Browser that I can delete and rebuild that may solve this issue?
    thanks,
    Mark

I think I've ironed this out. Several intertwined issues. I took a moment to type out my notes; hopefully it helps you guys solve this quickly if you get a call from someone else on this down the line.
[1] original problem of several hundred items missing in Media Browser: probably an issue of previews not being built. Mostly fixed when I regenerated previews for my library, but repairing permissions and repairing the database may have helped too.
[2] Residual problem of 20 items still missing (5698 items displayed in Aperture when selecting Inspector > Library > Photos; 5677 items displayed in Mail Photo Browser). My issue wasn't as much with 20 missing items in a browser as it was with trying to understand the root cause and whether I had an underlying Aperture, Aperture Library, or OS problem that would bite me later. Turns out several things were causing this problem:
[2a] In Aperture, when you select Inspector > Library > Photos , all your content is displayed: photos, videos, and any audio clips you may have imported (e.g., a recorded audio clip on your camera narrating shoot, location, client, exposure value etc). So even though you've selected "Photos", your "xxx items displayed" count on the bottom of the screen reflects all your imported content. This is not the case in the Media Browser - of which there are two variants in Mac OS:
[2a.1] Mail has a Photo Browser, which behaves much like a "Media Browser Lite: the title bar says "Photo Browser", it only accesses your Aperture and iPhoto Libraries, and only shows photos and video.
[2a.2] iWork applications have a more comprehensive Media Browser, where you can select between Audio, Photos, and Movies. If you select Audio the iWork Media Browser will show any audio files present in your Aperture or iTunes library. If you select Movies, the iWork Media Browser will show any movie clips present in your Aperture or iMovie libraries. Photos behaves the same way as "Photo Browser" in Mail, showing any photos present in your Aperture (or iPhoto if installed) libraries.
Turns out I had three audio clips in my Aperture library. When selecting "Photos" in either the Mail or iWork browsers, the total item count will only show photos and videos - no audio clips. So now 17 missing items remain.
[2b] Stacks - one project contained nine photos grouped into a stack. Only the key photo of a stack is previewed/shown in Media Browser. So a stack of nine photos will only show as one in the browser - unstacking the photo will allow them all to appear. So now nine missing items.
[2c] Seven photographs somehow had broken links to their referenced masters, and needed to be reconnected. Down to two missing items.
[2d] One photo simply wouldn't cooperate - no matter how many times I regenerated the preview, or deleted the preview and then regenerated it, nothing worked. I deleted it from the library and reimported it. One missing item remains.
[2e] Final missing item was a photograph I rejected. Makes sense; as media browser does not display rejects.
Problem solved!! Hopefully this might be of help to somebody in the future.
    cheers,
    Mark

  • Permanently Deleting Photos and Folders from iPhoto

I just purchased my first iMac on April 2, 2008 and simply love it. Goodbye Windows. WooHoo...
OK, now for my question. I am a semi-professional photographer that commonly takes about 500-1,000 photos during any given photo shoot. Normally (on Windows with Adobe Photoshop), I would load all 1,000 photos into my Adobe Catalog and review them. After a few days of edits and review, I may only want to keep the best 50-100 photos and I delete the others. But when I use iPhoto, even if I delete the 900 extra photos from my Library, they still sit in the iPhoto Library folders and take up space. I have opened the iPhoto Library Package and can see the Data, Modified and Original folders with all of the unwanted files, but I was advised by Apple Support to NEVER delete or remove files by opening the iPhoto "Package".
Is there any way to physically remove the unwanted photos from iPhoto once they are in my iPhoto Library, or do I need to edit and review them outside of iPhoto before I load them into the iPhoto Library which seems to be a permanent thing?
This is a common process for photographers who take a lot of photos. It's nice to be able to review and edit them before deciding on the best ones to keep. Surely there must be an option from within iPhoto that would physically removed the deleted photos and update the iPhoto Library correctly, without having to open the iPhoto Package and risk corrupting the Library.
Since each photo will be between 4MB (jpg) to 10MB (RAW) in size, do I need to use another application for my initial sorting, review and editing, then only import into iPhoto the "Keepers"? If so, what application should I be using?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    JeanneV
    As stated above:
Put the pics in the iPhoto trash and then iPhoto Menu -> Empty the Trash
This removes the pics from iPhoto and the Hard Drive.
    A couple of notes:
    1. You need to be in the Library view to do this. If you delete from an album it only removes the pics from the Album. To put pics from an Album directly into the trash use the -delete keystroke
Are you sure that you're in the Library View? This is the most common reason this doesn't work. On a longer shot there may be minor issues with your HD, but first make sure that you're in the Library View when deleting.
Also, I want to have iPhoto write the "Modified" version of my images on top of the "Original"... to save HD space. Can that be done?
No. iPhoto preserves your Original file no matter what. This is hardwired into the application and there is no easy way to defeat it.
You may export all your pics from iPhoto. Empty out the iPhoto Library (put the pics in the trash, empty the trash) then re-import the one previously exported. But this is long winded and will need to be done as your library grows. And, of course, this will defeat the Non-Destructive editing feature of iPhoto.
You can run a library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Of, if you don't want your Original file preserved, then simply don't use iPhoto. There are alternatives out there. Search on MacUpdate.

  • Photo and thumbnail missing

I have some old photos that are showing up black, (this happened to them a few versions ago). Is there a way to recover these photos, all the information seems to be ok, just no image.

I also just upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2 and have OS X 10.6.7.
I found this thread because I am missing about a month's worth of photos.  Specifically, the last major upload I did from my camera before I did the iPhoto upgrade.  (Where it asked if it's ok to update the iPhoto database, making it incompatible with older versions of iPhoto.)
Anyways, I am missing the photos and thumbnails.  If I go to iPhoto and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original, it tries to pull up Time Machine.
If I just use Finder to search on the missing photos by file name(I can display the photo meta tags, along with the event names such as my daughter's 5th birthday) then Finder will show the file, with correct date, but as soon as I click on it, it launches iPhoto, and it jumps to a different picture with the same file name (but taken on a
    different date)
Now get this, this is really bizarre.  Back toiPhoto.  If I scroll slowly through the missing photos, I just see the empty box instead of thumbnails.  But if I scroll quickly, it flashes the thumbnail of the correct photos, but as the scrolling stops, the thumbnails turn back to empty boxes.  For example, I can see the images of my daughter's 5th birthday flash by as I scroll through photos quickly, but as soon as I stop scrolling, the thumbnails and photos are back to their missing status.
When I first upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2, I noticed that certain cropped photos I had were missing.  And the currently missing photos were displayed fine.  (At least, the thumbnails were...)  It was only after I kept on clicking around on the missing cropped photos, trying to display the meta tags and additional info, trying to open up the full size pictures and scroll through the photos, that I noticed that suddenly about a month's worth of photos were no longer visible.
I have not yet reverted my iPhoto via Time Machine, but I figured I'd ask around before doing so.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Took a back up in iTunes then restored factory settings and then restored back but photos and songs missing

took a back up in iTunes then restored factory settings and then restored back but photos and songs missing

How did the photos get onto the iPad ? If they were synced from a computer then they aren't included in the backup - the restore would look for them in the directory that they were synced from.
And for the songs (and the contents of the Videos app and any iTunes downloads) they are also not included in the backup, the restore would look to copy them back from your computer's iTunes library. Do you have them in your iTunes library, or can you copy them into your library (File > Add To Library) so that you can sync them back ?

  • Messed up drive names and folders 'missing' in LR 4.1

Using LR 4.1 on a Windows machine with C (internal) and D (DVD) drives.  I import photos onto a FreeAgent drive, using a temporary folder (/Incoming) in which they are stored until I move them to descriptively-named folders and add metadata.  (All done in LR, not in Explorer or any other software.)
This has worked fine until an import I just did.  The Library is now showing an E: Removable Drive, which shows as offline (it is not shown by Explorer if I look there), AS WELL AS the FreeAgent, correctly identified by name, as F:    The E drive shows the descriptive folder list from all my past imports, apparently correct, but all marked with ?  The F drive shows ONLY the temporary folder, with the correct number of photos that were most recently imported.  If I click on the first (earliest) folders in the E list, the message is ‘no photos in folder, subfolders not show’.  This applies to roughly half the folders in the list.  The other half of the list, chronologically later, displays thumbnails when clicked, but is still marked ?
Can anyone please explain what is going on and how to fix this??

I'd recommend for this case, fixing a drive letter for the removable hard-drive, rather than letting it be dynamically assigned each session based on the next available drive letter.
Then it will not be able to vary (depending on what other drives or card readers or USB-connected camera,. phone etc may be already in place at that moment).
So your solution might be, to first set an entirely new drive letter for the FreeAgent drive (wisest to go higher up the alphabet, so it will be very unlikely to clash with any auto-assigned drives - perhaps X: for "external").
    http://www.windows-secrets.co.uk/2012/07/set-a-usb-drive-letter/
Then you can go to the LR display of the E: drive, and right-click on the top level folder that shows within this (as missing), and choose "Find Missing Folder" in the context menu. Then browse to the right location for that, in what is now your X: drive (or whatever). The images will all come back online and you will now see an X: drive instead of an E: drive in the LR Folders list.
Then you can go to the LR F: drive and do the same for the /incoming folder. Those images will come back online too and the F: drive will disappear from LR.

We have recently changed all of our XP machines over to Windows 7 and have now noticed that when a user creates new files or folders on the network it's not adding access for all users.  The only way around this is to open the file/folder on the users

  • How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto?

How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto as if it was a brand new install?
I am new to iPhoto and was unaware of how it works, honestly I still am a little confused as to when pics I am using 1/2 the time, some from iPhoto and some from MyPics.
Anyhow, I am looking to remove all photos from iPhoto because during the migration of all my photos from PC to MAC, somehow my timeline became messed up and all my photos that have been logged my dates since 1998 are now all messed up.
Although all my year folders are still in tact, IE 1998-2006, the subfolders and like pics are all intertwined somehow.
And when I search iPhoto for a given year, photos from 2,4, 8 yrs back show up in 2006.
Anyhow, I have selected and deleted all photos and folders within iPhoto, and then import the desired photos from MyPics, only to have the photos double up in the library. ( The old ones that should be deleted and the new imports)
I simply don't get it, they fill the trash and disappear when it's emptied, then reappear when iPhoto re-opens!
    Can someone help????
I have completely reworked all my photos so that they are all in the correct folders outside of iPhoto, and now I want to import those and only those pics with that file structure.
    IE Structure = YEAR > MONTH > DAY ( or if needed) > DAY/EVENT

Do you want to remove the existing full sized image files also? If so then just drag the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder to the Trash and empty it. But be warned you'll lose all of your image files.
You are dragging the files to the iPhoto Trash bin and then using the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu, right?
In copying your photos to myspace and then back the original capture date may not be retained and then either the created date or modified date will be used by iPhoto. If the files in the current library are the originals from your camera then those have the best chance of retaining the correct Captured Date. You can check that out by dragging the Originals folder from your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and then trash what remains of the iPhoto Library folder. Then launch iPhoto and it will ask you to create an new library. Then import that Originals folder and it's subfolders by dragging it into iPhoto's open window. You'll keep the same rolls that was. The roll dates may change but you can check the captured date of the files by using the calendar in the Source pane.
You won't be able to keep your folder structure within iPhoto. Each outside folder will result in a roll with the same title as the folder. You'll be able to create folders in the Source pane to put albums inside. You can create a smart album to include all photos in a certain date range, line one month.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Missing Photos and jumbled library and sub folders

Hi. I am having trouble opening photos in iPhoto. The thumbnails are squashed out of shape and when I double click on the image, a different photo appears. There are also blank squares in place of some thumbnails. All the photos in my library are also out of order, most of my subfolders are now empty and if there are photos in a subfolder, they do not correspond to the folder name. Everything appeared to be okay two weeks ago.
Any help in retrieving my lost photos and resetting the subfolders would be appreciated.

    Hi Ben,
    First try a rebuild:
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.
iPhoto 4 or later: Rebuilding the iPhoto Library
If that doesn't work, create a new library:
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "import" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Went to work on my photos and  something pops up that says file off-line for missing. This has never happened before. Can someone help? thank you

"Went to work on my photos and something popped up that says, file 0ff-line or missing. This has never happened before. Can someone help? thank you!

This means that the photos (or the folders that contain them) have been moved, renamed or deleted outside of Lightroom. On Windows it can also mean the disk drive has changed letters.

  • Missing photo and "attempt to perform arithmetic" error

    Hi y'all
    This is informational for y'all.
I've been using Lightroom since the beginning of march and have about 4500 photos in my library. Photos are pentax raw files (*.pef). My machine is a windows XP pro Toshiba laptop and XP is fully updated. I've started having a couple of problems which I believe may be related. I've searched the usual places but haven't been able to find any answers.
    1) I have one photo that doesn't display in any of the views (library - grid and zoomed, develop and slideshow). It displays as a blank space in all views. It becomes visible in grid view with my develop changes (I made it grayscale) if I scroll to where it is when it is off the page but disappears again as soon as I let go of the scroll bar. If I try to reimport it I get a message that it is already in the database.
    2) If I continue to to try and access it I start getting the following error in a pop up box:
?:0 attempt to perform arithmetic on field ? (a nil value)
once that starts occurring I can cancel the popup but then it starts to appear everytime I try and do anything (flag or rate a photo, access a menu etc) and can only be made to go away if I close Lightroom using task manager and then restart it.
The photo is stored on an external disk and the actual pef file appears to be fine. I can open it successfully using rawshooter.
I transfered the files to my external disk when using the beta and did so manually outside of lightroom and then used the locate missing files and folders function to relink it. It has what looks like a valid xmp file and all other photos in the shoot appear fine.
I eventually managed to bring the photo back by deleting the folder from the lightroom library (but not from the disk!) and reimporting it. As xmp files were present all changes and ratings were correct when I reimported.
    Hope that helps someone else!
    cheers

It sounds like you might have a corrupted preset.
    Here's something you could try:
Go to your Preferences/Presets tab and push the Show Lightroom Presets Folder button.
Then close Lightroom and temporarily rename that folder. If the problem goes away, one of your presets is bad. Otherwise name the folder back to what it was and let us know what happened.

  • Imported files from my camera, a mixture of photos and videos, the videos (mp4 format on my Canon SX60 HS) always appear at the start of my library view.  What am I missing here?

I have tried both putting them in a collection and viewing all pictures etc. to no avail.
In Windows Explorer, I have them sorted by time taken successfully.  They all import into folders by date in "My Pictures", both photos and videos when I import them.
