Photos and Multiple Computers

So the way I had things set up in iPhoto is my iPhoto library sat on a 4x2TB Raid 5 array that is attached to a mac mini running Yosemite Server.  Worked fine for the Macs in the house.  It seems I have to change this with Photos?
When I try to access the Photos library from a Mac where the library is mounted on a drive over the network, it says the library can not be opened nor repaired.  Did something change here where Apple now wants the library on the local disk and won't allow access over a network drive?
Makes sense, as one of the benefits with Photos is the cloud integration and local Photo libraries can access other pictures through iCloud Photo Library, but I really want to keep SSD space on my office Mac Mini and Macbook Air freed up.
So...  Is there a way to access ONE Photos library for all my Macs or do I have to create local libraries and rely on the cloud for access across the Macs?

So it seems that when I create local libraries on the other Macs, the libraries are full size?  It would be nice if you have multiple macs, to have one be designated having the full library (along with the cloud) and the others have access to the thumbnails and lower res pictures unless you elect to grab it down from the cloud.  Duplicating libraries seems like a total waste.
Oh and sharing.  My wife now can't access the Photo library from here accounts because it's a different Apple ID.  Ideally Family Sharing would help with this, but there's no apparent way.

  • Using Messages with Multiple Users and Multiple Computers

I have two users who share two different computers, switching between them during the day.
I'd like to use messages on them for us to send text messages in the office, however, it asks them on logging in (most, but not everytime) to re-enter their apple id password.  It seems that using icloud for messages among multiple computers like this isn't good.  its like it wants each computers to be linked with a particular user, and doesn't like it that the users are moving around from computer to computer
    Options to avoid this nuisance?
    1.  Would bonjour messaging work, and then just remove the icloud account from messages?
    2.  How about setting up the message server on my ML Server, would that avoid this problem?

I'd say probably make sure that in the advanced tab under edit>preferences you should make sure they both point to the same file.
My turn now, how to i post a thread, there's no button.

  • What is the best way to set up devices and multiple computers for a family

I am trying to setup multiple devices and computers with home sharing.  I currently have 1 apple I'd for my wife and one for me.   I want to set up home sharing for us and my two kids.  We have two small laptops that stay at home and one that goes back and forth to work.
?1. Do i need to give up my apple I'd and share my wife's or vise versa or do I just enter it into my device iPhone or iPad when I want to load something from another library onto my device and the change I'd back.  Will the stuff still be there then when I switch back to my apple Id.     Can I switch like that.
    2. Should my kids each have their own apple I'd or just use the same one for multiple computers and devices.
    3. Does a network system outside of wifi need to be setup for the computers another wards have the computers linked on a network. Or can they just be in the same place at the same time with wifi.  Generic linksys Internet connection.

Unless you have 3rd-party apps allowing Windoze to read and write Mac OS Extended, or your Mac to read & write NTFS, your options are ExFat or Fat.   See #9 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Airport express, a hotspot, and multiple computers?

    Hi,
We currently live in an apartment that has the internet available via ethernet. I have set up our airport express so that it is acting as a bridge and we can use one computer at a time to use the internet. My question is, can the airport express be set up so that it logs into the hotspot and then shares the internet to multiple computers?
I do understand that you can share an IP address but am unsure how to get the airport express to log into the hotspot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

shim99, Welcome to the discussion area!
My question is, can the airport express be set up so that it logs into the hotspot and then shares the internet to multiple computers?
No there is no way to configure any of Apple's base stations to do that.

  • Comprehensive integration approach for photos across multiple computers?

    Hi All--
I've been wading through the discussion boards and have multiple partial pieces of info. However, I am looking for a state-of-the-art solution to an old problem because I want to integrate all of my photos onto a single drive and (probably) library from several sources (different computers). Many may have redundant images between them. Some of my key questions are:
    1) Is there any software out there that could (in a batch mode) look for and group photos with identical or highly similar content based on the image data itself (not file name) and allow side-by-side comparison to reduce redundancy and do an initial sort before import? It seems daunting to just put all files in one spot to try to compare manually. Do Aperture or PS offer anything liker this capability?
    2) Assuming >10,000 images, is it better to have a single library; or to move between, say "work" and "personal" libraries? Is such moving between libraries readily practicable in iPhoto 06?
    3) Will I ultimately want to organize all of my photos into one location and then do a single, massive import into iPhoto for best library organization, or is there a better way?
    4) After all of this consolidation, if I use default iPhoto library organization, I will e.g. have shots from year 2000 named as rolls from 2006, etc. Is it worth the effort of trying to create a better file organization, or just rely on accessing the massive iPhoto library and creating albums and smart albums?
    5) I am willing to dedicate significant time and effort now to do this correctly once, not looking for a quick-fix. I need a solid strategy to begin with. How do I get well-organized after getting out of the blocks in such a sloppy fashion? What is current "best-practice"?
    6) For future security, can I rely on Retrospect or the new upcoming backup systems, or should I back up image libraries separately?
Looking for some sound advice to get this moving over the holidays. Your help will be appreciated. Sportscarbill

Try iPhoto Library Manager to merge the various libraries. It's a shareware ($20) and you can read about it here.
    http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html
For Duplicates, check out Duplicate Annihilator :
    http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/index.php?action=software
But in the end, the only way to be sure is to look. AFAIK neither PS or Aperture offer anything to help.
    2) Assuming >10,000 images, is it better to have a single library; or to move between, say "work" and "personal" libraries? Is such moving between libraries readily practicable in iPhoto 06?
That's up to you, but remember that you can only have one library open at a time. My library is 10k + on an iMac G5, i gig of RAM with no difficulty. However, choosing between libraries is as simple as holding down the option (or alt) key at launch. Moving shots between libraries means either merging or exporting from one and importing to the other.
    3) Will I ultimately want to organize all of my photos into one location and then do a single, massive import into iPhoto for best library organization, or is there a better way?
Do it piecemeal. You'll learn along the way and improve your workflow as you learn. Start with the smallest batch too.
If you have a large library, I strongly suggest that you use all the filing tools that iPhoto offers: Rolls, Albums, Smart Albums, Folders and keywords. It's a database: what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.
    5) I am willing to dedicate significant time and effort now to do this correctly once, not looking for a quick-fix. I need a solid strategy to begin with. How do I get well-organized after getting out of the blocks in such a sloppy fashion? What is current "best-practice"?
See my answer to 4, above. But here's a suggestion: Organise yourself with date-based albums:
Folder: Year 2000, inside albums for Jan, Feb, Mar etc.
When you've done that, you can go back and keyword according to location, people, events so you can then quickly develop albums by date, Smart Albums by date, location and people and any compound thereof. Keywording makes searching very easy.
    6) For future security, can I rely on Retrospect or the new upcoming backup systems, or should I back up image libraries separately?
The pics are stored in the iPhoto Library Folder which is at Home/Pictures. Back up this folder and you'll preserve the pics, organisation, keywords etc. However: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
Inside the iPhoto Library Folder is the library6.iPhoto file. Make a copy of that file as protection against database corruption.
Hope that helps. If you've any more questions, post away.

  • Easy way to transfer photos from multiple computers to one library ?

    Hi,
At home we have a couple of macs and of course every user has it's own iphoto library. I am now looking for a way to backup all those iPhoto libraries to a "main" computer in an easy way. This main computer is an iMac with multiple external drives attached. On this same iMac I already backup the iPhoto library to one of its external disks.
It would be nice if there was some kind of tool that could collect all (new or updated) photo's from the other macs, and put them in the main iPhoto library on the iMac.
Is there such kind of thing, or am I doomed to find out which photo's are new on each computer and manually copy them to the iMac ?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto Library Manager will work with iPhoto 08. All libraries must be at the same version in order to be able to merge them.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Photos and multiple Facebook accounts

I switched from iPhoto to Photos but am missing the multiple Facebook accounts option. As a family we've stored all our photos in Apple's Photos on our iMac. At times we like to share photos to our own Facebook timelines. With iPhoto this was simple. In Photos it seems we have to remove the current FB a/c under Apple preferences, and then add the other one.
Please let me know if there is an easier way.  Surely Apple is working on this?

Why not just access Facebook with the web browser in the time being?  I just tried that, and you can just click the "Account" button at the top, then "Log Out".  Ta-Da!

  • Multiple email accounts and multiple computers (Linux)

Hi there, I've been searching for a solution to this problem for a while and there seems to be no solution.
I have 40+ email accounts (and adding more all the time)
I use 3 computers (all running the same version of Linux and Thunderbird)
All my email accounts are IMAP of my own server(s)
My problem - when I add an account on one computer, or new folders / filters etc I often forget or don't have time to add them on the other computers, so now my 3 computers have very different configurations.
Is there a way to have the Thunderbird configuration on a server (remote) so that when I make changes on one computer they will be replicated automatically on the others?
I realise I will have to manual re-sync the configs but once I have them all the same again I'd like them to stay that way.
    Thanks.

Thank you for those links Toad-Hall.
I've followed the steps and I'm now waiting (been waiting considerably longer than an hour) for Google Drive to sync the profile directory.
My profile directory is 147 MB, which worries me as the speed of the internet connection I have is not great (I'm in Thailand) and if Thunderbird is going to need to sync many files it could be forever sucking up my bandwidth.
Still I'll wait and see if what I've done (creating a new profile on Drive and copying the old profile files to the new folder), actually works and then try pointing my other computers to this remote profile.

  • Managing multiple Apple IDs and multiple computers

My wife and I have two apple IDs and we have two laptops (an Air and a MacBook Pro). I use my ID for my purchases, and she uses her ID for her purchases. We chop and change the computers depending on what we're doing (although I tend to use the Mac Book Pro, and she the Mac Air). Each of us has our own login on each of the laptops. We both have significant 'libraries' of content for each Apple ID.
My question is this - I logged in on the MacBook Air with my login and attempted to dowload from iTunes via iCloud using iTunes Match a TV episode I had only part watched on my MacBook Pro. I recevied a message saying the Air was associated with my wife's Apple ID and if I downloaded the show, she wouldn't be able to download any of her past purchases for 90 days.
    What complete madness is that?
We have so many apple devices (we both have iphones, ipads, an apple TV at home and the two laptops) and use our separate apple IDs for our purchases, syncing, photostream etc etc.
Now, when I want to do something really simple like watch a show on my other laptop I can't unless I block my wife for 90 days...
Am I doing something wrong? Or is Apple's policy really lacking in any commonsense! Keep in my mind Apple's insistence that each person should have their own apple ID....
Thank you in advance for your help/suggestions.

I'm not surprised you haven't seen them on here. The search in these forums is abysmal. I don't remember which I'd seen on here, and can't find it again myself.
    Here's a writeup with screenshots:
    http://9to5mac.com/2014/09/19/ios-8-how-to-set-up-and-use-family-sharing/
I had a harder time finding out which apple ID an invited family member should use if they have two IDs in the same way that you and I do. It seems that the invited person can do the same - join the family share group with their iCloud ID, then specify the different Apple ID they have been using for their purchases.

  • New ipod and multiple computers

I just received my Ipod and want to start setting it up and downloading music, but I do not have internet access on my computer. If I download iTunes and start downloading music and putting it on my ipod, on a different computer will it make it so that I cannot acess the music i buy on my other computer? Also will i be able to download more music on the other computer or will i always have to download music and sync my iPod with the same computer i initialy sync with?
    thank you
    ps.
i have a 2Gig iPod nano if it matters.

You can move from computer to computer but you cannot load the music that is on your computer on to another. If you want to take music off of someone elses itunes, you can do that (just plug in your pod and drag the desired songs to your ipod) but you can't put those songs on your computer. I would imagine that the same would be true for downloaded songs; so if you want to save the songs to a computer, you should use the same one. What you need to do is set your ipod to manual by clicking on your ipod icon in itunes and clicking on the "manually manage tracks" box. This will keep itunes from loading up another persons library onto your pod if you happen to us another computer (which would erase all of your songs).
Also, to download on other computers, I think you need to de-authorize there computer. You do this by finding the link in the toolbar and clicking it (you'll see it). Hope this helps

  • Flash Lagging on multiple browsers and multiple computers

I'm experencing sever lagging in playing flash games and viewing flash videos.
    Current Flash Player is 11.7.700.169
    Operating Systerm is Windows 7
Browsers used are Firefox, IE and Chrome.
All the above experenced on my desktop, my laptop, my wife's desktop and my wife's desktop.
I've used all three browsers on all computers. All computers are running Windows 7 and all are up to date.
I'll play the same few Facebook games and they all lag no matter which computer I'm using or what browser I'm using. Also experencing same lagging conditions when watching Youtube videos and streaming videos that use Flash Player from other websites. Seems like anything using Flash will give me the same results. I never had this lagging issue during Flash Player 10.
I've read plenty of other Forum post and have never seen a definitive answer. Seems like everyone wants to blame something other than Flash.
I've deleted and reloaded browsers, cleared cache, deleted and reloaded Flash. I even went so far reformatting and reloading a third desktop and still experence the same issue with Flash 11.
Just wanted to place my experence on the list of everyone else experiencing these issues.
Also hoping someone eventually finds a definitive fix for this issue.
    thanks

This has been an ongoing problem for me as well. I have a tremendous amount of technical experience with computers. The problem is definitely the Flash Player. I have just finished reinstalling windows and after installing the latest version of Firefox and updating to the latest flash player, this problem occurs instantly. Sometimes I will watch a flash movie in a new tab and everything seems to be fine, but then when I am done watching the movie, I will close the tab and my browser instantly becomes completely frozen and I am unable to switch to other tabs or do anything at all in the browser. The only fix that seems to work for me is... I launch task manager and notice that the Flash Player is still running and appears listed on my "Processes" list twice. When I choose to "End Process" on one of the flash players, both flash players then close at the same time and vanish from the processes list and my browser instantly goes back to working correctly.
Another example is when I am currently watching a movie and I hit pause and then do something else on my computer, like check my mail, or play a game, or anything at all - I notice that my computer performs extremely laggy. Again, I choose to end process on the flash player, both instances of flash player then vanish from the Processes list and suddenly my computer is functioning correctly again and the lag disappears.
I know for a fact that Adobe is fully aware of the problem and they basically do not know how to fix it. My guess is that they have incorporated some kind of new functionality to their more recent versions of flash player that makes the flash player perform better, but it also causes lag and lock-up problems. They do not want to remove their new functionality, so instead - they allow users to suffer. I don't really care what the percentage of users are that are suffering from this problem. What I do know is  - that nobody should be forced to suffer.
I am a Web Devloper and Firefox user and I am not about to use a different browser. I especially will not use Internet Explorer since using Internet Explorer is like holding up a sign that says "I want a virus". Every large devlopement company I have ever worked for in NYC will not even allow anybody in their office to use Internet Explorer ever because it is considered to be a high security risk. The lock-up and lag problems that are caused by flash player are very well know at these companies. It is very common for an employee to experience computer problems and almost every single time they have a problem - the cause of the problem is the flash player. Everytime an employee has a problem where their computer is acting laggy or locks up, the first thing they are "trained" to do is check to see if their flash player is running in their processes list and in almost every problematic situation - the flash player is the cause of the problem.
Considering that Adobe makes every know #1 Design & Creation Web Design & Editing program and basically monopolizes the market when it comes to these programs, I think that they would be the first company to understand that Firefox is the leading web browser with developers, especially because of all of the web developer addons that Firefox offers. So I really don't understand why Adobe continues to treat Internet Explorer like it should be everybody's default browser. Flash Player should always be designed to work best in Firefox first and it currently does not function correctly in Firefox at all. It is a huge fail. It is an even bigger fail that they have had 2 years to fix this and they have not.
So I continue to use flash player and Firefox despite the problems, I just have to remember to "end process" on the flash player all the time, which really sucks. Flash player is the only thing that causes problems for me on my computer and has been the only problem for almost 2 years now. You would think that Adobe would have fixed this by now. I have searched and found hundreds of users with the same exact problem, and every single solitary time the same incompetent answers are given from Adobe.
I have created a shortcut on my task bar to launch my task manager easier. I created this shortcut for one reason only - to end process on my flash player when it causes serious lock up problems. I suggest that other users do the same. Maybe in 5 years Adobe might finally decided to attempt to fix the very well known problem that they are fully aware of instead of ignoring it completely as they have been. If they have not been ignoring the problem, then they would be honest and tell their flash player users that they are fully aware of the problem and that they are  working hard to find a solution and fix the problem, but they have not stated this because they do not want to admit that they have screwed up. Again, I can only assume that they have tried to fix the problem but they don't know how to.
I am a proud user of Adobe products, but I am completely at awe when it comes to how huge a fail the flash player problem has become. I suggest that Adobe work closely with Firefox and other browser companies to find a solution to this problem and fix it. Nobody should be forced to fix the problem for themselves and reinstall a 2 year old version of flash player to fix the problem. If users were to do this, they would then be faced with constant messages telling them that they do not have the latest version of flash player.

  • This has probably come up a million times - iTunes and multiple computers

I have a desktop game machine and a laptop I use primarily for school work and web browsing. Currently, I simply add music to one computer, then remember to add it to another. Is there some program or iTunes extension out there to keep the two libraries perfectly synchronized (including album art)? I'm really picky about having my album art set up perfectly...
    Thins which are NOT Options
    1. Network drive. I don't always have access to the big desktop via network (when I'm at home, in the car, on the road somewhere else).
    2. External drive. I don't want to have to tote an external around. I do have a program to fix an external's drive letter (USB Drive Letter Manager, freeware), but I usually leave the external plugged into my desktop for extra storage.
    3. iTunes sharing. Same issue as network drive, no guaranteed access.
Am I doomed to have to keep syncing manually? If there are programs out there, I am not necessarily averse to a commercial (i.e. paid) solution, but freeware (NOT Demoware) is preferred.

There are a few utilities that can help you sync iTunes across different computers. You could begin your research by having a look at these for instance:
    TuneRanger
    SuperSync
    syncOtunes

  • One Executable and multiple computers

I would like to confirm my understanding on this topic -
Assuming I have one LV executable stored on a network location, and 6 PC's accessing that single EXE file -
Is is correct the each PC loads that exe into it's internal memory, and as such, there is likely not an issue with
X number of PC's accessing the same exe file ?
Someone keeps trying to press the issue that comm errors are a result of 'too much demand' on the network EXE file.
(The comm errors are due to RS232 limitations, in my mind, but I'd like to be sure I'm correct in my understanding).
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thank you both for the replies.
I certainly had thought about loading the software on the individual machines, however it was set up as I described before I started working
at my facility and it involves medical devices - which means validation of the most minute change.
As the end of the year approaches, it's unlikely I can slow down production to prove a point.
I wanted to verify my assumptions were correct before I pushed the issue.
    Thanks !
