Photos app cannot display greyscale (1-channel) jpegs

The Photos app (on my 3G 2.0.1) doesn't correctly display greyscale (1 channel) jpegs. For example, go to this URL and save the picture using the iPhone so that it appears in Camera Roll:
http://www.brodie-tyrrell.org/pad/index.php?id=2008/07/14
and when viewed in the Photos app, it appears as diagonal stripes because it looks like they got the bytes-per-row wrong.
The image works properly in Safari on the iPhone and of course, the same image of the same odd resolution stored in RGB mode works fine. And it works in all other web browsers, image viewers/editors, etc, so I'm pretty sure it's not corrupt.
I couldn't find any technical-contact email or forms on the apple site, just phone numbers that I think I could call at most once and I'd rather save that call for something more major. If someone has an email contact for an iPhone software engineer, could they please tell me?

And here is a screenshot of the incorrect display:

  • Photos App Cannot Split or Merge Events?

Whenever Apple updates their OS software, they tout what wonderful new features it has.  What they don't say is what they discarded as well.  I depend on the "Events" feature to organize my photos by a great variety of subjects and topics (way too many to keep separate "Albums" for).  I name them with a variety of keywords to make searching easier.  But I also like to search through the mass of Events by date to narrow the search.
Now I upgraded to Photos, and suddenly commands to manage Events and name them seem gone.
    • I looked in Apple's HELP for Photos and it can't find anything about "Events."
    • I did find the sidebar (which was hidden on first launch) but it only shows an "Album" named "iPhoto Events."
    • When it hit the little triangle next to that album, it just shows an impossibly long list of my events.  This is useless to me.
    • When I just clicked on the album, my events all appear, but without any dates showing when I roll over them with the mouse, as they did in iPhoto.
    • The photos in the Events Album display no longer show a 'quick review slideshow' of the photos contained in that event, as they did in iPhoto.
    • When I imported new photos from my iPhone, it shows all the photos I took on a given day, but there seem to be no tools with which to split them into separate Events, name the events, merge them into existing events, and so on.
I depend on these tools on a daily basis.  PLEASE, Apple, can you restore proper event management for those of us who use these features?  This big idea of making everything on my laptop computer work the same way it does on my iPhone or iPad is absurd.  It seems to always cause a vast "dumbing down" of the software to 'touch' use, eliminating all 'roll overs,' all 'pop up hints,' all 'dragging' and so on.  Apple was supposed to be about choices, diversity, in the beginning.  Now it's all about uniformity?  Forget it!
Oh, and one more thing:  Naming it "Photos" instead of "iPhoto" now means that searching for the Photos app online is impossible.  That's because when such a generic word is used for the app, searches just bring up everything in the world with the word "photos" in it.  They did this with "Mail" and now it's exceedingly hard to search for tips on how to solve problems with the Mail app, because every document in the world with the word "mail" in it comes up.  Please, Apple, stop this nonsense, and give your apps recognizable names!

Offhand it is hard to think of a name for an email client that is less descriptive than Mail

  • Photos App Not Displaying Small Images, Is There a Workaround?

I have an iPhoto album of icons (25x25 and 32x32 images) which I use in mock-up applications on my iPad (such as Blueprint and iMockups). The images display fine in iPhoto on the computer but when I sync them to my iPad, the Photos app shows them all as grey rectangles. An example of the images are those from the Glyphish icon set (http://glyphish.com/). Because these images do not show up correctly in the Photos App, they are also unusable in the mock-up apps.
Does anyone have any solutions for getting these to display properly in Photos? I suppose I could scale them up but that will cause them to get pixelated when the mock-up apps scale them back down again.

I finally found a solution for my problem concerning the disappearance of iTunes in the browser settings.
I changed the Safari settings to "allow third parties". Now everything works fine.
Why Apple treats its own services as a third party still remains a mystery. In the bargain should a SW update not initially alter the settings of the users preferences without further information.
    Cheers,
    Georg

  • Photo app that displays names of files?

    Hello,
I have iOS 4 on my iPhone and now, I came across a question: Is there any app that displays photos with their filenames on my iPhone? For example, I want to use the albums I already have on my iPhone not only showing the picture itself, but also the filename such as "summer 2009 in Paris.jpg". If there is a possibility to cut off the extension (in this case .jpg) this would be the best solution.
    Greets,
    Michael

I think it is possible for a third-party app to look at and do things with your Photo Library, not just your Camera Roll.
One of these might show the filename, or might be good candidates for a feature request:
    http://appshopper.com/photography/exif-wizard

You can send requests to Apple here:

  • HT1947 Remote Apps cannot display in landscape mode in iOS7

My ipad 4 cannot display the Remote App in landscape mode after upgraded to iOS7, also the response is very slow when choosing album, songs or Artist

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If there is, then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
If there isn't a lock symbol then try a soft-reset (is that what you mean by restarting ?) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Photos app not displaying all files

I recently advised an elderly lady to replace her XP laptop with a iPad Air (only!). I helped her transfer mail etcetera and also her collection of photos (simple .jpg's). All went well, I imported her pictures successfully and we were able to brose her life from 2008 to now in the standard Photos app.
Since recently, the photos app experienced some crashes. And now we found out that the app display only photos from November 2012 and more recent.
At first I was concerned that the files had disappeared, but they have not. The older files are still selectable in the Facebook app, including all the collections by date etc.. It would appear that the Photos app database is somehow corrupted.
How would I help her out? My main concern is that she does not have a proper backup (yet). The storage space required for her files exceeded the iCloud maximum, so I could not set that up as backup (all other items are on iCloud though). Nor does she have an external computer. I am afraid that a reset will clear the iPad and thus delete all pictures.

I have no idea if this will work, but it is my basic starting point suggestion. She will not lose any data if she does this and it may help the crashes if nothing else.
Close all apps, and reset the iPad. This reset simply resets the iPad system. It is very much like rebooting your computer.
In order to close apps in iOS 5 or iOS 6, first tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • IPad Photos app letterboxes 16:9 content

Is there an app that will let me view a 16:9 photo (e.g., 1920x1080 pixels) full screen on my HDTV?  The iPad Photos app, when mirroring onto the TV, letterboxes such photos on top and bottom to fit into its screen, and then on the sides as well to fit the TV screen, so I end up with a photo on my TV with black all around.  I want the photo to display the full width and height of my TV, since it's already the right shape.
Interestingly, the Photos app will show a 1080p video full screen (i.e., it doesn't simply mirror the iPad screen).  I have not yet found an app that will do this for photos.

I discovered that the Photos app does display photos full screen, but only in slide show mode.  Unfortunately in that mode you can't manually choose when to change slides. As soon as you swip the screen to advance the slide, it reverts back to plain mirroring.
I checked out several apps that play slide shows, and are designed to specifically display pictures out the HDMI port.

  • Windows Application that syncs to iPad Photos app?

We gave my mother an iPad for Christmas. One of the things I know she wants to do with it is share her photos with people. The problem is, she's on Windows so no iPhoto to give her a means to organize all those pictures.
Because of this, they are in countless folders and sub-folders. iTunes doesn't seem to offer a very good means as selectively syncing those photos where I imagine it's support for an app like iPhoto is much better for obvious reasons.
I guess what I'm wondering is whether or not there is an app for Windows that would serve the same basic function as iPhoto and be compatible with an iPad? Now, that may mean it's something iTunes can work with directly the way it would iPhoto or it might mean there's a corresponding app on the iPad that the program syncs photos to.
I'm open to ideas here. The only thing I doubt she'd want to do is upload all her photos to the internet. For one, there are a great many of them and two she always has concerns about privacy.
Any recommendations you all can make, whether it's apps to try or just simply methods for making this whole system work better, please share them.
Two things I would add is she's using XP and she does have the iPad Camera Kit.

Known bug.  Quit the Camera App, double-tap the home key and delete Camera from the recent apps bar. Fire it up again, should be good.

  • Looking for iPad App for displaying photos via a projector

I'm looking for an App that will allow me to display photos using a projector yet permit manual advancing through the slides.
The included Photo app only works with the projector when in slideshow mode. As soon as I try to manually advance a photo the projector output stops.
I've seen references to Keynote but I'd rather not have to import 'x' number of photos into Keynote to be able to display them. I'm not convinced Keynote will do what I want anyway.
There's got to be an app out there somewhere that does this. Isn't there?
    Thanks.

Locking the iPad so that a user can't exit an app isn't possible for any developer to implement, since the developer kit doesn't provide that sort of access to the low-level routines in iOS. The only way to lock into a single app is to use a case/frame that covers the Home button (and turn off the gesture support in the settings in iOS 5).  A number of companies make kiosk mounts for this purpose.
    Regards.

  • Photos app doesn't display shared iCloud albums

I've been using Aperture and iPhoto, and had a few shared albums on iCloud. The upgrade to Photos app didn't seem to go smoothly and I had some strange behavior and messages about connecting to iCloud when the app first launched. I don't recall what they were exactly.
Now I can't view any of the shared albums in Photos and when I try to share to them, they are not seen as options. I can still view the shared albums on my iPhone. And I was able to re-establish shared albums in Aperture. But I can't see any way to get Photos to see and display them.
I disabled and re-enabled iCloud sharing in Photos preferences, no effect. I am not using iCloud photo library and am not interested in upgrading.
I eventually logged out of iCloud and removed all its data locally and then logged in again. Everything was restored except the shared albums.
So far nothing I've tried has worked. Photos looks nice, but I can't access my shared albums.

This post should be under iCloud on the Mac, not icloud.com. If any moderator can move it, that would be great.

  • Private Photos App - pictures not displaying This app was working fine, then suddenly it won`t display any of the photos.

This app was working fine, then suddenly it won't display any of the photos. One day the photos were there, gone the next. It still shows how many photos are there but just shows a white screen. I can't export anything to the photo album. Adding photos to existing folders yields the same result, only white screen displayed. However, I can create new albums and add photos to those without issue. Does anybody know how to recover the "missing" photo"  I was going to try reinstalling the app but it's no longer available in the iTunes App Store. Thanks, Tracy

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Cannot upload photos to internet sites with the new Photo app (10.10.3 Update)

I'm not a huge fan of the redesigned Photo app that came with the 10.10.3 update. So, I can no longer upload photos from my computer to websites with this app. It's like the pictures don't exist when the window pops up for what files you would like to select. I have had to work around by dragging the photos out of the app and to my desktop, then upload them via the pop up window from there; that works just fine. Now I have duplicates all over my desktop cause I need them so frequently. All my photos and albums do seem to be in the app correctly, I just can't access them from other programs and the Internet. I run the latest of Firefox. IPhoto is still showing on my dock too, does it need to be there now that it has been replaced with the Photo app? I havent tried opening it, but I do know I cannot select any images from the old IPhoto when trying to upload to the Internet, the app doesn't exist in that situation. Even beyond upload to third party sites on the Internet, I had the same issue when I attempted to put my logo in to Pages to create a binder cover last night. I had to go do my work around again and drag my logo out of the program to the desktop. I have restarted the computer several times and have shut down nightly since the new update. What is wrong with this app?

    Seems like a simple question
    How exactly are you uploading?
And after you stated that you did not understand this simple question you answered it
And of course until you answered no one had any idea how you were doing it - there are many ways including many incorrect ways so in order to help we have to understand what you are doing - many times the answer is as simple and providing the correct method to replace the incorrect method that one is using
And iphoto of course still exists and is usable on you system - Photos was added - iPhoto was not removed with the upgrade to 10.103
You are not "forced to use Photos - in fact many people are not - I am not yet sure if I will or not
And the discussion on using the media browser is not at all irreverent - in fact  it still works virtually exactly the same as with iPhoto - which is why I referenced it of course
And you spent so much time on weird and incorrect dribble that you failed to answer another critical question
what happens that you can not upload them?
WE can not see you and can not help unless you actually provide details and all requested information - you stream of incorrect statements and editorials not only do not help us help you, they create a major barrier to helping you

  • Photo App does not display all photos

Running iOS 7.0.4 on an iPhone 4S. The new Photo App does not display all photos properly. All photos show up as thumbnails. However, when you tap on some of them, only a blank page is displayed. The rest is fine. This issue started after the upgrade to iOS 7. Is this a bug? Hardware-related?

Upon closer inspection it appears that the missing photos are in a folder called IPhoto Library.  This folder is greyed out when I choose the import folder.
When I use 'show package contents' it reveals the missing photos (below).  Why is my iphoto library so scrambled!  Thanks for any insight.
