Photos App Storage

I have a 64GB iPhone 6, with the latest update (8.1.1). I have 22 photos saved to my phone, and 7 videos totaling about 1 minute of 240 fps slow motion video. In the "manage storage" section of Settings, its says "Photos & Camera" is using 5.6 GB of storage. This seems way off even considering the size of slow motion video files. Any explanation/solution? I just recently deleted about 1000 photos/videos; before that, the "Photos & Camera" app was supposedly using 9 GB or so of storage

  • Photo app storage is 3.9gb used when I have no pics????

why is my photo app using 3.9gb when I have no pictures? I had loads on and it said 4.6gb so I backed them up and deleted them. Also deleted them from recently deleted folder. THERE ARE NO PICS ON MY PHONE. after this action I now tells me I'm using 3.9gb instead of 4.6gb. Is the drive partitioned or is 3.9 reserved for photos? Both of these are doubted. So please can anybody enlighten me??? I have 5s. And as you probly already know all my cloud is used up by ios8. This is sending me mental and I'm ready for smashing it up as I can't get anything else on my phone now and I should have 3.9gb shouldnt i?

You still get "Not enough" space after deleting everything? how much music do you have on the phone. And how much free space does it say you have now?

Yes, that's exactly what I'd suggest for the vast majority of users.

  • ICloud storage for new photos app

iI've just updated Yosemite and the new photos app is asking me to upgrade my storage, now if I do this will it upload all my photos on my iMac to the cloud including external drives connected to my iMac?

    Are you certain?
From Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support
"If you change your System Photo Library, the contents of this new library will be merged with the contents already in iCloud."
But presumably this merge is two-way i.e. the contents already in iCloud will then be merged into the new System Photo Library? It's not clear, but that's how I understand it.
In any case, http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/comments/announcing_powerphotos may well offer library merging in a post 1.0 release.

Could you please clarify what it is that is full, your iPad or your iCloud storage.

To add to Nick's comments, "Other" is typically approximately 1 gigabyte.  Occasionally for some users, it gets much (many times) bigger because they have some corrupt files.  If that's the case, it's best to restore the iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into (current) iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" on the right.  If restoring from the iPhone backup does not help, then restore (again) as new and then manaully sync the iPhone.

  • How do you lower the storage that the Photos app takes up?

My photos app takes up a lot of space on my iPhone and I am hoping that someone can help me figure out how to lower it. I have tried deleting photos that I don't need but the app still takes up 2.6 GB. I don't even have 100 photos but I do have a couple videos. This is really annoying because I only have the 16 GB iPhone. (I have the iPhone 5s 16 GB running IOS 8.1.3)

    Hey Sam,
The iCloud Photo Library (beta) was created to address the issue you are having with storage space on your iPhone.  I record a lot of videos on my iPhone, so I know that they consume more space than just about anything else.  I frequently import the videos onto my computer and remove them from the iPhone to free up space.  Here is some information that may help you.

How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
To turn on Optimize [device] Storage on your device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select Optimize [device] Storage. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

  • OSx 10.10.3 Photos app and iCloud storage

What does OSx 10.10.3 Photo app do if iCloud is enabled and photo library exceeds size if iCloud storage?

thank you for the fat response
actually on system preferences it says 52.8gb of photos and videos
    and on photos app 70.47gb
when i go to photos app in finder and go to "show package" and then get info for  the folder "Masters" it says   55.45gb
a bit weird but according to the thing you mentioned obviously the uploading process involved uploading specific  parts of my library and not the whole thing

my iphone 4 wont download apps, says my storage is full, but when i delete photos/apps, its still says my storage is full. whenever i try to backup my phone, it doesnt work. anything i can do?

Go to Settings - General - Usage and see which apps are taking up a lot of space.
In my experience, if you haven't cleaned out your Messages that is where a lot of space is consumed.

  • TS4009 How do I clean up mail in my icloud?  I have already deleted old mail on all devices, and emptied the junk & deleted files, but it still shows that I am at max on my icloud. What do I do to free up space? (photos & apps do not take up that much roo

How do I clean up mail in my icloud?  I have already deleted old mail (from all my e-mail accounts) on all devices, and emptied the junk & deleted files, but it still shows that I am at max on my icloud. What do I do to free up space? (photos & apps do not take up that much room).  When I go to manage storage on any device & it will display how much room each program or app is using, it still shows that my e-mail is taking up the most room.  Is there a way to actually log on to the icloud server to manage what it stored there?  If so, how do I do it?  Also, on a related subject,  why does my mail not sync accross all devices?   ie. when I delete an email on one device, why do I still see it on all my other devices?  How can I change this?
I have an iphone5, ipad2, ipod 4th gen, ipod 3rd gen, all running on my same apple id - but I have a PC not a Mac home computer - is this part of the problem?  Looking to upgrade to a Mac sometime this year...
    Thank-you for the help!

I do have the Time Capsule and spoke to Apple Care here in Sydney about it yesterday.  They told me my mail is not backed up there unless I create a special folder. I just tried ringing them again but Apple Care is closed today...
Mail is backed up automatically. If you make backups automatically, open Mail application and then, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities). You will access to the Time Machine interface, and you will be able to see all your mails of all the backups you have, and you will be able to restore them. It means that your mails are backed up onto the Time Capsule

  • Photos App keeps crashing, won´t open and I can´t view my photos anymore

Please HELP! The new Photos App got installed and now everytime I try to open it, it crashes and I don´t know how to solve this!
I used to work with a shared library between iPhoto and Aperture but most of the time I used Aperture, but when I assigned the shared library to the new Photos App, overtime I try to open the app, after 5 seconds it crashes!
I used the Ctrl+Alt thing with the Aperture to keep seeing my photos but as I understand, nothing I do in terms of modifying and updating (adding photos and stuff) the library, it does not update the original library because it is already working with the app that keeps crashing down.
What do I do??? How can I get the Photos App to work?
    PLEASE I´M DESPERATE

    HI,
Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings.

  • IOS 8 Photos App - Events Album Sort Order is Screwed

    Hi,
When I sync my photos (that are grouped into Events) from my Mac iPhoto Library, to my iPhone and view them in the iOS 8 Photos App, all the events are no longer sorted in order - they used to be sorted chronologically in 7.1.
To try and find the event photos that you are looking for is now impossible.
Does any one known how to fix this or is it a regression bug that they have introduced with iOS 8?
    Rgds
    Gary

This is such a cluster-f*ck.  I was stunned when I found the change to iOS 8 brought this mixed up order of my events from my iMac's iPhoto.  Having them in Events by month/year was the only way I could keep a reasonable handle on where everything is.  This is completely unacceptable from Apple.
Then again, it seems from what I read around the Internet, those of us using iPhoto as our managing software AND using it to sync pics to our i-devices are a clear and dwindling minority.  Maybe Apple just didn't think it important enough to bother, but they need to fix this.
What would have been completely helpful and awesome with iOS 8 would be the importing of keywords (and descriptions, but at least keywords) for those of us syncing from iPhoto.  I can understand why Apple wouldn't have done so years ago (memory onboard our i-devices), but today there's no reason for this.  Those tiny, tiny bits of data should come over with the photos to make them searchable by keyword.  I'd care less about the Events being out of order if I could search by keyword on my iPhone or iPad.
Come on Apple... we have enough storage space to make this happen.

  • Unable to migrate Iphoto Library to Photos app from an external harddrive?

I have a 1TB external harddrive that contains my 250+ GB IPhoto Library. However, whenever I try to open it up in the new photos app, I get an error saying the library cannot be opened because it is on an unsupported disk format. Apple has a "solution" to this problem, but the means of solving it aren't feasible in my case. I don't have enough space to copy 250GB onto my internal drive, hence why its on an external hard drive.. Does anyone else have a solution?

    Hi Ksevv
As A.Fruit said you will need to quit the photos.app and as well the iPhoto. When you restart the Photos app, hold down the 'alt-option' key (not the Shift-key) and the choose your library from the Photos app in the pop-up window. The path of the library is indicated on the window, so do ensure that you pick your right library in case you have multiple ones. The Photos app, will prepare the import and takes its time, so be patient. Also be aware, that if you have iCloud Photo library activated, this will go against your 5GB free storage, so if you need to store your photos in the iCloud, ensure that you have enough space.
    Hope the above helps.
