Photos app vs. iPhoto App IOS

On my iPhone and iPad/iPad mini, I have both "Photos" app (a kind of pink/orange starburst icon) and iPhoto for IOS.  I have two questions a search didn't turn up answers for:
1)  Do I need both these apps?  They both display my photos in similar ways (photos/albums).  I think Photos came with my devices and I think I downloaded iPhoto from the App Store.
2)  Are they drawing on the same database of photos (presumably my Mac iPhotos and PhotoStream in iCloud) meaning the photos are not taking up doublespace?
I'd like a little space back on my devices and deleting one of these apps (if they aren't "sharing" photos) is a good way I think.  I use Instagram to edit IOS photots - not either of these apps.
Thanks in advance!

The short answer:
Yes, you need both apps - or may want to have both.
And both are showing you the same photos, but in different ways, and they are just offering differnet views, the photos will not be duplicated.
See the iPhoto Help:  http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnka7d353af
All of the photos and video clips in the Photos app on your device automatically appear in iPhoto. You can also import photos into iPhoto from other devices and computers, other apps on the same device, or a digital camera (if you're using iPad)
iPhoto is showing you all photos stored on your iPhone in one place, and you can organize and edit the photos in a more elaborate way than with the Photos app by adding tags and brushing in effects. You can craete Journals andphoto books, and publish slideshows, and share photos to iTunes.
The Photos.app mamages the Camera Roll and is the central sharing place between differnet apps on your iPhone. Also, the Photos.app is the only app that can delete from the Camera roll.
You cannot delete the Photos.app  - it comes with with the system software on your iPhoto. You could delete iPhoto, but the app does not need much space. Transfer your photos to your computer and delete the photos that you do not like.

That's just a visual differentiator so folks can easily tell if it will run on their machine. The difference is the RAM and processor in the iPad 2 and iPad (New). The camera has nothing to do with the physical requirements.

  • How to transfer photos and music from dropbox app to iphoto app album on ipad air

I am trying to transfer files, jpeg and mp3 from my library on windows PC to a newly purchased ipad air.  Ipad is not showing on my home network, wifi.  Trying to use dropbox app on my ipad to enable networking.  It shows pix as a dropbox link, but I am not able to open them in iphoto app and make an album.  Anybody out there has an answer???

Sync your music and photos to the iPad using iTunes.
Sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod with iTunes using USB - Apple Support
iTunes is a free download from Apple if you don't already have it.

  • If I delete my whole "Iphoto Library" folder in finder will my photos in the iphoto app itself also be deleted?

Just trying to get some more space on my macbook, and for general knowledge, what will happen to my iphoto application if i completely delete the "iphoto library" in finder?

There are no photos in the iPhoto application. All photos by default are in the iPhoto library
If you delete the iPhoto library then they are deleted
Probably the solution is the run your iPhoto library on an external drive

  • Exporting photos to non-iPhoto app

    Hey all,
I've been searching the net for a while, but haven't found a clear answer to my question.
My girlfriends computer needs a re-format with installation of Snow Leopard and therefore I was to backup everything which is pretty straight forward. However, iPhoto isn't!
She iPhoto version 7.1.5 and SL comes with iPhoto 9! So if I want to make a backup, will that be compatible with the newer version? And in that case, how should I proceed? Simply copy the folder over and let the new version open the old library? Or?
In any case I would prefer to use Lightroom or something else, as it's much better and easier to work with when it comes to file structure and future backup. Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks a lot, I really need the help
    Kristian

    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to use a different Photo Editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
    Regards

  • Photos blurry in iPhoto for iOS!!!

I just noticed something... I have in the past edited several photos in iPhoto for iOS (changed saturation and stuff), and looking back at them now I have realised that when I pressed the button to view the original image, the original is much crisper and clearer! Why is the edited version a bit fuzzy and blurry? Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

At the moment I cannot see a way to do it in 'iPhoto' you have to do it in the 'Photos' app.  My workflow is to organize in 'Photos' and use 'iPhoto' for editing.  Hopefully future versions will make this much easier.

  • Restore hidden photos in iPhoto app

I hid some photos in an iPhoto app (IOS 5.1) and when I returned to the album they were gone. The selected hidden photos worked until I left the album and they remain in the Photo app.
Any ideas on getting them back into iPhoto?

Ok, I tested with a synced group of photos, and anything I've hidden I can still see if I click the number of photos in the photo browser. I've included some pictures to make sure we're talking about the same places.

  • IPad photo app or iPhoto

Could someone please advise me on the fundamental differences between the iPad app "photo" and the iPhoto app
    Thank you in advance

I'm not sure what part of you need to post in the correct forum is confusing??
iPad and iPhone questions are best ask in the correct forums - iPhoto for the Mac has nothing to do with iPhoto on either (on any IOS device) - the only thing they currently have in common is their names - no other connteciton
Posting iPad and iPhone questions in the iPhoto for Mac forums does not give good answers since there is no connection of any sort as explained

  • How 2 get edited photo from iphoto app back into iPhoto?

I have the new iPhoto app.
I can't seem to get my edit photos back into iPhoto on my imac.
I thought save to iTunes would do it but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Sure would like to just go back to my mac and find the photo updated.
I have the photo stream turned off and just sync with a cable.
    Problem 2
The photos and albums seem to be in random order.  This makes it almost impossible to find the photo I want to edit.
    Can anybody please help?

<If you are using the cable: Connect your iPad > open iPhoto > select your iPad on the left under devices > Import <button top right of iPhoto (blue button).

    <Do not import through iTunes.
Sorry - that was no help.
If I edit a photo in e iPhoto app then connect and bring up iPhoto on my mac the iPad device has no photos to import.
I have imported hundreds of photos from iPhones and iPads - I know how to import.
Even if there was a photo laying there to import - that is not what I want because...
Imagine if I had 100 photos then edited all 100 photos on my iPad.
Then if I imported them I would now have 200 photos in iPhoto on my mac.
I want the edited photo to update the original just as tho I edited it in iPhoto on my mac.
So I could "Revert to Original" if I needed to but probably never would.
So the question is when you share to iTunes where does it go?
Also the new album it creates "Edited" - What's the story on that?

  • My iphoto app wont open

    my iphoto app wont open

Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Next thing to try is a reboot of your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the devise restart. See if that fixes your problem.
Also some folks have found that a corrupt photo file causes iPhoto for iOS to crash. Removing all photos and recopying them to the iPad one or two albums at a time allowed some to find which photo was causing the problem and delete it.

  • Newsstand and iPhoto Apps

Peoples Friend subscription - I have a subscription to the Peoples Friend, and until yesterday, all the issues for the weekly magazine were on my iPad, but when I tried to open an issue, the dates of each issue have changed to 'Unknown'. The only issue that I can access is dated 3 November 2012. I tried the following: restore purchases - this didn't work; I turned off the iPad, however, this didn't work; Deleted the app through iTunes and reinstalled it - this didn't work. I initially thought it was the iPad, however, I have the same app on my iPhone, and the all issues have disappeared from the phone as well. So it would appear that there is a problem with the App. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
iPhoto - My iPad won't sync to the current version of iPhoto and I cannot delete any photos from the iPhoto app.
Both the iPad and iPhone are running the current version of iOS, and the computer software is up to date.
    Thankyou.

Just to update: the app for the subscription to Peoples Friend has corrected itself, must have been a glitch, but it is working okay now. One of lifes little mysteries, I guess.
However, I still have the issue when syncing the ipad with the computer and 'photos'. I would like to sync my iphoto library but I am only able to select 'Pictures'. Whereas previously I was able to select 'iphoto'. Thanks.

  • Does iPhotos in iOS 8 offer slideshow on iPhone?

I can't seem to get a clear answer from the internet or Apple's literature.  I can't make Photos App on my iPhone 6 with iOS8 show me a slideshow.
Some articles speak of a slideshow option within Photos App on iPhone in iOS8.  Is it possible?
I see some slideshow options in iPhone's  Photos & Camera settings, so there's some kind of provision for it.
But Photos App doesn't offer Slideshow as an option, at least where I'm looking for it.
Is this an iPad only feature?  (Don't have iPad)
What am I missing here? Is slideshow available in some other iPhone app?

iPhoto for iOS is no longer supported with the introduction of iOS 8.  These two Apple documents describe what to do at this point:
Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8 - Apple Support
Get help finding your Photos in iOS 8 or later - Apple Support
Check the App Store for slideshow apps.

Will Photos app be updated soon to permit add caption to picture like the iPhoto before ios 8 kill it? I used thad feature and now I don't now how can I do. thanks

I haven't seen any mention of adding the text feature to photos, but Apple is always tight lipped on new features. Try a photo editor app like the one below.

  • IOS photo app vs iPhoto, keywords, smart albums, face detection?

    greetings,
i have some questions about iOS photos app in comparison to iPhoto (in 10.8).  i've done a little searching on the web and in the forum, but didn't see this covered...
i always sync my iPhone to my mac, copy/import my photos to iPhoto, and use iPhoto to organize my photos.  in iPhoto, i tag photos (keywords) and use "smart albums" to access all my photos based upon the keyword tags.  face detection in iPhoto is GREAT!.   i have all my friends faces named and finding them by "people" grouping is fantastic.  the down side to all of this is that i have everything working great on my mac, but usually i'm using the photos app in the iPhone to show pics to my friends since that is what i have with me.  i'm not sure if this information in iPhoto ever gets synced back to my iPhone.
1- does the iOS photos app have any of these features from iPhoto?
in other words, can i tag photos, lable the faces of friends, set up smart albums in iOS photos?  if so, please point me to some info.  i haven't seen an obvious way to do any of this.
2- can i sync what i do in iPhoto back to my iPhone?
in other words, can i get the tags, peoples' names on their faces, and smart albums copied from iPhotos back to my iPhone?  is there some setting or command in iPhoto, or somewhere else?
3- i just turned on photostream.  can/does this iPhoto data transfer via photostream to the iPhone?
    i have an iPhone 4.
i am just about ready to upgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 6.  so if any of these features are specific to iOS 6, please let me know.
i'd appreciate it if you could mention if there is anything special about iOS in the iPad, because a friend has asked me how she can do in her iPad (iOS 6), what i do with iPhoto in my mac.
thank you for any suggestions or advice.
