Photos beachballs on startup

I took the plunge and upgraded Yosemite to 10.10.3 and thought I'd give this Photos app a go. I'm normally an Aperture user and wasn't expecting big things.
After upgrading a 40gb test library to photos without issue (aside from many missing features) I thought I'd upgrade my 37,000 photo, 400gb main library.
It took a while, then on first launch had a spinning beachball that after 10 hours was still there.
After restarting my iMac Photos launched successfully, but upon "zooming" out to years view beach balled.
Force quit, relaunch, zoomed to years successfully (albeit slothen got as far as "shared" tab before beach balling.
Force quit, relaunch, got through years and shared to Albums, then beach balled.
Since then, force quit and relaunch beachball straight away.
Restart and launch, beachball. Can't do anything past the launch screen.
This didn't happen on my 40gb library (which was on my older macbook pro). The only issue there was feature based and slow performance.
Has anyone else experienced this??
I'm running a 2014 iMac 5k, 4GHz i7, 24gb ram.

Further, I've noticed that after disconnecting my iPhone from my Photos does launch. However, it hangs after about 40 seconds of operation so you've gotta be really quick with finding that special snap.
However, after reconnecting my phone this behaviour is remaining the same. 30-40 seconds of operation then freezes.

  • IMac beachballs on startup for upwards of an hour

My iMac takes ages to become operational, and for sometimes over an hour, it beachballs or simply freezes. However, if I leave it on, the problem seems to go away. it's been doing it for for a while on and off. I thought it might be an OSX issue, so upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks but it's still happening.
I've verified the disk- no problems. I've verified and repaired a few permissions- still doing it. I've checked the RAM using Rember which came up with nothing either. PRAM/SMC reset too.  I'm a bit stumped.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I-photo crashes on startup

I installed Snow Leopard and upgraded to iPhoto from iLife 11. The iPhoto started and ran for a few minutes (I edited a photo) it then crashed. Ever since a gray screen comes up and the gear wheel turns for 30 seconds or so and the program crashes. I've reinstalled the OS and iPhoto and downloaded all the updates with no change. The error report is huge, but cut and past a portion below. Any ideas? I'd call Apple support but I'm in Europe and can't call a US 800 number from my home. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Photo Shop Elements Startup problem

Not sure where to post this. I have owned PSE for quite a while and have used it successfully on my iMac but have been away from it for quite some time. I am now wanting to get back into it but have run into a problem.
When I click on the dock icon I get a window "Updating Adobe on line components from Adobe.com" and a message "Down loading file 1 of 2 - NO personal information is being transmitted" This goes on forever and PSE never opens. I cannot cancel and must force quit. Can anyone tell me what is wrong ?
    Thank you
    john

    Hi John,
    Which Photoshop Elements version.
My PSE 2 still does this check even though there is no further updates on the Adobe site.
(I really must change the Status about Checking for Updates)
The Setting is in PSE menu > Preferences > Adobe Online on mine. There are drop downs at this point
Try disconnecting from you internet connection so that you can get past this pause/internet check and reset the Preference once the App has started.

  • PC Help!  PS6 Keeps opening old photos on every startup.

I have seen this discussion several times on this forum for a Mac, but not a PC.  And sadly, the mac solution does not apply to the PC.  This has been driving me nuts for over a year now.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!!

Most like they are the same. Sound like your talking CS6 not PS6 and CS6 Autosave save a file you were working and CS6 crashed.  When you start CS6 it will open the autosave file the was not saved by you.  It sound like you not closing the recovery file or saving in under some name in one of your folders. So the recovery file does not get deleted by Photoshop.  Every time Photoshop start the recovery file will be reopen. You need to locate your userid adobe Photoshop CS6 recovery folder and delete that file If Photoshop is not deleting it when you save or close out the recovery document.

  • Mid 2009 applecare logic board and battery ADVICE

returning mac OS and mac hardware buyer here.
i have been questioning (read complaining) about the battery life (1 1/2 hours on safari) and the performance (spinning beachballs on startup, on wake and on starting safari among other things) since i bought this machine. i brought it in for the umpteenth time to the genius bar (they apparently only have 3 of these on record?!) because i had a break and i have a "service battery" alert.
i am being told i can replace the battery and the logic board based upon their diagnostics of the machine and i have FINALLY (Whoo-HOOO yippeee kayeeee'y!!) got a committment from a mac rep that i should be expecting  3 1/2 - 4 hours out of the battery and not 1 1/2 hours.
i don't really have an option here from everything i can tell but does anyone have any advice for me on this? warranty is up in February and from what i am being told i can bring it back if i bring it home and still only get poor battery life.
at the same time i am really unhappy (insert expletive) about having spent so much time troubleshooting this machine only to be told that the hardware seems fine or that the battery tests normal or whatever. this macbook pro 13 inch seems like it was a dog since the day i bought it.
my preference would REALLYT be to trade into mac on a new macbook pro 15" and i am wondering if i am instead i am going to have to just repair this machine (thank my lucky stars that i buy applecare) and empirically test the machine on my end to make sure that i am getting more than 2 hours per charge and that i don't have the spinning beachballs that i have had to have dealt with over the last 3 years...
i mean, i /have/ to fix this machine and monitor it over the next three months instead of them helping me cut bait with it by getting some financial incentive somehow to move into a new MBP is that right...?
    TIA

    thanks.
looks like it has now had a new battery and a new logic board and it is still failing hardware test for the battery.
they are now sending it out for additional testing to some other facility.
    anyone had a similar experience?

  • Mounting Hard Drives In Gnome

    Hi All
I'm currently setting up a 64bit Arch Linux box for a friend of mine. He was using Ubuntu, but was not happy in them not updating Gnome when the point releases come out, so I talked him in to Arch Linux.
Anyway, I have set up Arch and Gnome and now I am faced with an issue I don't know how to resolve. He uses 2 SATA HDD's. SATA1 houses Arch (/boot, /, swap & /home), SATA 2 houses quite a few partitions. I have mounted both his music and photo's at startup with fstab, but the issue I am facing is that his other partitions I can't mount on the fly in Gnome.
For example, under Places > Removable Media are all the partitions on his SATA2 drive. I double click on the drive called Kansas (because its big ) and it asks me for my password to mount, but does nothing. Every time I select a drive after that to mount, nothing happens. I thought it was FAM, but I can plug in USB thumb drives and they mount and also it mounts DVD's & CD's.
Edit: - I can manually mount them to /media/device_name but this is not an ideal workaround
Now, I have asked if he want's them mounted all the time (by putting them in fstab) but he prefers to mount and unmount on the fly.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

  • Problem with remote rollover of images, please help.

    Hello,
I got some great help yeserday on how to set up remote rollovers for a image gallery. It all works great except for when you have the curser in between the thumbnail images at bottom, the 1st image that I placed in large photo spot shows up. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Here is the page so you can look at the code. http://www.test.detarconstruction.com/homes/howard/howard.html
Thank you so very much in advance for all your help
    Amy Sue

You have added a "Mouse Exit" action to each of the thumbnails which always replaces the big photo with the startup image 'outside.jpg' each time you leave a thumbnail.
(In source view you can see:
      onmouseout="changeImages('big_photo','outside.jpg');return true"
    for each of the thumbnails).
If you simply remove all "Mouse Exit" actions the big image that belongs to the last touched thumbnail remains visible even if you leave the thumbnail and until you touch another one.
This may be the effect you were searching for.

  • Help! HD was destroyed but LR previews were not

I'm reorganizing huge numbers of files on several drives preparing to move from a very old Mac Pro to a new Mac Pro. Somehow, the HD with all the current raw photos was reformatted, apparently by me. I will kick myself 'til the day I die. The camera card had already been reformatted as a matter of routine. There was however a data disk backup from 4/11/09, meaning everything was recovered except two shoots on 4/12/09 (316 photos). My startup drive and the LR catalog (version 1.4.1) on my startup drive were not damaged. My LR catalog settings specified a standard preview of 1440 pixels, medium quality, with automatic discard of 1:1 previews AFTER 30 DAYS. In my ~/Pictures/Lightroom Catalog Previews.lrdata package (folder) there are lots and lots of files, some of them several MB in size.
I know it won't be the same as my original raw files, but is there a way to harvest the largest preview files, so I at least have something to show for my work on 4/12? These files all seem to have an extension of ".lr-preview.noindex". I tried to forcibly open a few as JPEG files with no luck. Any guidance would be much, much appreciated. Thank you.
    --Scott

Sorry to here you have this problem. First question from me, how come no other back-up?
You want LRViewer from Marc Rochkind.

    i am ******, can i get a refund?

    Hi ...
A word to the wise. You may be glad at some point you hear the startup chord.
The startup chord is telling you your Mac passed it's startup diagnostics. You want to hear the "chord".  Read here >  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_startup
You can report the issue with this app though. Use the email form here >  Apple - Support - Mac App Store - Contact Support

  • What are these gray lines on my screen?

I'm sure this has been asked numerous times, but I haven't been able to find a really good answer to what these are??
I took a photo of my startup screen (the lines only show really well on gray or dark gray backgrounds; white you can't really see them as clear). On the left, it's hard to see, but it looks like a hard-edged light-gray rectangle going down the monitor, and on the right is a large gray line/blob with a few tiny lines up above, towards the right of the screen.
They don't show up in screenshots, and I use the LCD Scrub screen saver, but that doesn't seem to help get rid of them. I don't know if it's dust, or pixels, or a burn-in on my screen...I'm confused on what it is officially known as, how it gets here, and how to fix/remove it without having to buy a new screen??
    Thanks for your help!

Could be a possible GPU issue, only way to tell for sure is to take it in for professional diagnostics.

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • Startup Disk Full - need to remove photos

Before I begin - please excuse my technological ignorance.  If I leave out any information, please let me know and I will get any needed details up asap.
I have a MacBook Pro, running Version 10.9.2 OS X with 8 GB Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.  After multiple warnings that my startup disk was almost full, I finally received the dreaded 'your startup disk is full' message (my fault for ignoring all of the warnings!).  I was able to free up a neglible amount of space by deleting useless files - so now I have 2.54GB free out of 159.18GB.
My iPhoto library is taking up about 82GB of space, with almost 19,000 photos covering the past 10 years.  It is time to move a large chunk of them off my IHD but I'm at a loss as to the best way to go about this - and I'm terrified of deleting them from my IHD and then losing them forever.
I have two external hard drives and have copied my iPhoto library to both.  Questions are:
*Is it better to backup/copy to EHD the source files for the photos (not sure if I'm using the right wording here) instead of the iPhoto library?  While I foresee using Macs for a while, I would hate to lose access to these photos 20 years down the line because I know longer have iPhoto - or (heaven forbid) iPhoto is replaced by something else that can't open my library.
*If yes to above - how do I do this?
*If copying iPhoto library to both EHDs is sufficient and I delete most of my photos from my IHD to free up space (probably all but the most recent 12 months), it seems redudanet to make additional copies of the entire library each time I backup.  I don't want 5 iPhoto libraries on my EHD with some duplicate photos in each. The overlap would drive me insane. Is there an incremental backup option that only backs up the new photos to the EHD?
*Is there a better option than EHDs for backing up a huge amount of photos?
Again - please excuse any places I may have used the wrong wording or term - I'm a bit new to this backing up business but want to make sure I don't lose any photos.  With a 9 month old baby it seems something precious and photo-worthy happens every couple of minutes.
    Thanks!!
    Christie

First of all you don't want to backup your photo library if the backup will be your only copy. If you delete the orinal library to gain space that will allow the backup software to delete the photos from your backup.
Also if your photos are valubable to you they really need the protection of a good well tested backup plan. Any data with any values always needs backup protection.
My suggestion is to move your photo library to and EHD that is formatted Mac OS Extended with GUID partition mapping. After the move test your library to be sure that the application can still open it properly. Once that is done, the original library can be deleted.
I would then get another EHD that is formatted MAC OS Extended with GUID partion mapping. Is hould be 2 to three time larger then you disk space start backing up to it. Time Machine is a very simple backup solution. Test the backup by restoring some  data from the backup to sure your restore from it.

  • MacBook Pro says "startup disk full" and that I have 58GB of photos, but folder appears empty

For the past couple of days, I've been getting the message that I'm unable to save/download something because the startup disk is full. I checked the storage and the main problem appears to be 58.7 GB of photos, even though I've deleted all photos I could find (including iPhoto). I checked all of the folders on Finder, only to find my picture one taking up most of the space, but when I tried to view what was inside it appeared empty, and it wouldn't let me move the folder to trash. Any help on how to delete the contents of the folder?
    Thank you
