Photos come up blank in iPhoto 08

Hi guys,
A couple days ago I updated my macbook from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I copied my old iPhoto library to my new Time Capsule and once I reinstalled iPhoto 08 I pasted the library back. The transfer (10GB) was painfully slow - it took over 12 hours (I don't know if that is relevant, but hey).
So I opened iPhoto and selected my library to use and once it loaded all my old photos, half of the event thumbnails were blank. Quite a few of the photos in the events folders were blank as well. I did a rebuild that I saw on a support page, and it got some back but not all. Now when I open photos it comes up with a black circle and a "!" image.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance...

1. Copy and paste is a very good way of moving chunks of text around, however, it's not really good for moving a Library containing many thousands of files. Drag and Drop is rather more reliable.
it comes up with a black circle and a "!" image.
2. The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• Camera photos come up blank

i believe ever since i upgraded to the latest january software upgrade, when i take photos all seems well--the shutter goes off, etc. but then when i go to look at my photos, all i see is an empty frame for each photo. then when i click on one of them, the screen goes blank (black) and then goes back to the home screen. then if i go to the photo roll, its totally blank, as if i never took any photos.
help!

ITS FIXED!

I have a third option..
I saw this message, and cringed at option #2 (which is simply to erase all settings and content after syncing).. I didn't want to lose contact photos, calendar events, sms messages, notes, safari bookmarks, etc, etc.
So, I went in and found (on my windows laptop) where iTunes was storing the backup files:
C:\Documents and Settings\jkeegan\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
That dir had two directories beneath it, with long hash filenames..
One seemed to be for an earlier version of the software, and the other for the latter. I synced my iPhone with iTunes, and saw the newer of those two directories get updated slightly, so it seems they're storing one backup per version.
I copied the directory (maintaining file permissions and dates etc) into another directory off t the side, to use as a backup if I had to.
Then I went into that newer backup dir and just started looking through these files for anything that looked like it had to do with photos..
One file, which for me was named f1b43d3b3ecf259a3626c13a8b0cebd8ba513117.mdbackup, seemed to talk about image numbers for photos.. The broken version of this file looked roughly like:

So, I disconnected my iPhone from the dock, and then tried deleting that file from the actual Backup directory that iTunes looks at.. I reset the iPhone according to option #2 (Settings->General->Reset->Erase All Content and Settings).
When I connected it to the dock, it asked which backup I wanted to use, and I said the most recent. It updated everything, and now the camera works (I had no photos on the phone - the initial problem coincided with me deleting all photos on the iPhone after extracting them). I didn't lose any contact photo images, sms messages, etc - nothing.
To find that file for you, you can try doing a "grep Info.plist *" in the backup directory with the most recent modification time after doing a sync to back up. (I'd make a backup of the entire Backup directory before trying what I did).
I hope Apple fixes this, along with the other documented camera problems.. but at least here's a workaround that doesn't result in you losing everything.

• Faces in Photos showed up blank after the upgrades

Faces in Photos showed up blank after the upgrades (no labeled faces at all) with the suggested faces mostly full of 100's of blank white circles. I used to have about 50 faces labeled with about 2500 photos. Now I have no labeled faces on top of page (completely blank) and only 9 face suggestions on the bottom. Photos also runs very slowly compared to iPhoto. I tried re-installing and re-upgrading and have gotten the same results. I'm using a Mac Pro (2009), OS 10.10.3, 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC, 7 GB storage. Any help will be appreciated and even if I have to delete the Face's database and start all over, where do I find that database or file to delete?

• How can I print multiple copies of same photo onto one page on iPhoto 9.5.1?

How can I print multiple copies of same photo onto one page on iPhoto 9.5.1? I was able to do it on the old iPhoto, but can't seem to be able to do it on the new iPhoto. Grrr...

Photos does the same thing.... Only workaround I can come up with is to create a template in Pages and copy & paste.

• Only some of my photo's are syncing from iPhoto to my iPad, iPhone and Apple TV.

Only some of my photo's are syncing from iPhoto to my iPad, iPhone and Apple TV.
It may be my own fault due to learning Aperture and playing around with the locations of the Master Files.
The thing I don't understand is that when in iPhoto all thumbnails of all photo's are able to be enlarged / edited etc. When a thumbnail is clicked on there is no gray triangle with an exclamation mark indicating that the link to the original photo can't be found. I would have thought this was ok for syncing to take place.
When trying to sync through iTunes to my iPad for example (after some photo's have been synced) a window comes up saying "Some of your photos, including the photo “_MG_3820.jpg”, were not copied to the iPad “Mark Harlen’s iPad” because they cannot be displayed on your iPad".
I thought this may be due to lack of memory space but my Apple TV (which has the same issue but not the same warning window) has over over 100 free GB's so that can't be it.
When I did a test and re imported one photo that wasn't being synced to my other devices, that photo consequently was then synced so maybe it has something to do with the path through iPhoto to the original files.
Is there any way I can re establish these links with out having to create an entire new iPhoto library from the originals (I have a lot of albums and have done a lot of editing etc and don't and want to have to do it all again).
I look forward to you help and advice
Mark

Thanks for the advice but it didn't seem to work
I've decided to try ditching iPhoto and orgainising, syncing my photo's to all devices from Aperture
I have so far imported over 1200 photo's (relocating and renaming the master files as well) and find that when syncing through iTunes only 209 photo's are listed. The Projects/Albums are there but some indicate that there are 0 photo's in them when I know other wise (at least according to whats happing in Aperture)
I'm starting to suspect it may be a computer problem
Any thoughts?
Regards
Mark
PS: Just after posting this I restarted my computer, went into iTunes and my Apple TV started to sync. It was now syncing 854 photo's not 209 as before.

• How can I back-up my photos that are in my iPhoto to an external hard drive without using the iPhoto structure.

I am attempting to back-up my entire MacBook Pro on an external hard drive before deleting everything from the MacBook Pro. Although I appreciate iPhotos photo structure and organization, I would prefer to back my photos up outside of the iPhotos structure, using “regular files” such as it appears in iPhoto’s “Masters” folder. However, I would like the Event names that are currently assigned to my iPhotos to remain attached to the photos. Is there a simple way to do any of this? Would this be a matter of somehow exporting each Event from my iPhoto? THANKS!

Stay away from the Masters folder. Rooting around in the Library package can damage the Library and is unnecessary and less useful than the supported way to so this.
Just export the them: File -> Export:

Remember that the Masters won't contain any of the changes that you made, only the files exactly as copied from the camera.
Thanks, Terence. As far as filenames go...does "Album Name and Number" work for keeping my Events together?

• Managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive

Hello, I need some help with managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive.
Background:
I have 1,200 photos/videos on my iPhone 4S on the camera roll and need to delete them to save space. Most are photos/videos of my new baby which I would be devastated to lose, so I want to be 110% sure that I have them backed up properly and accessible.
I frequently hook my iPhone up to iPhoto to download all of the latest photos to iPhoto.
I have done Time Machine back ups and just did a latest one yesterday.
I would like to save my camera roll into a folder on my hard-drive so that all of these photos are in one place in case I need to access them (and not spread across different folders like in iPhoto).
My Mac (Macbook Pro - circa 2009) is now telling me that my 'Starter Disc is nearly full' and won't save all of the photos from my camera roll.
My questions;
Are photos stored both in iPhoto and Pictures folder, and if so are they duplicates?
I've heard that Time Machine only backs up full libraries and so cannot be used to access individual photos - is this true? If so, how do you access individual photos/files from my external hard-drive?
How and where should I delete older photos from to save space on my Mac - iPhoto or Pictures? (once I know how to access them from my external drive if needed).
How do I delete all of my photos from my iPhone camera roll in one go? - I can only see a way to delete the 1,200 of them individually.
Going forward where is the best place for me to synch/upload my photos for medium term storage/access on my Mac?
I would consider myself quite intelligent but when it comes to this topic, I'm happy to be spoken to in very simplistic terms!
Thank you.

Import the photos to iPhoto - then select the photos in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to the desired location

• Something went wrong with iPad photo/Video import and now iPhoto on Mac does not see content.

I just connected my iPad (4.3.2) to my mac (10.5). It launched the synch process for photos and videos and everything went fine. I then clicked on one of the newly imported photos in iPhoto and it choked and ultimately closed the app and gave me message along the lines of "iPhoto quit Unexpectedly." I rebooted the machine and when it came up went to look in iPhoto and saw that the new photos/video were not there. They are still on the iPad (Fortunately!) However when I reconnect the iPad to the Mac it does not see any content to import. In essence it seems to think it did the import and is not aware that it lost the content.
There's a couple possible solutions I'm interested in. One, are the photos/video somewhere on the Mac and just need to be dug up? I nosed around a bit but found nothing. Then other solution would be is there some way to force iPhoto to reimport what's on the iPad, ignoring that it feels it's already done this?
Thanks,
Wil

Where did these photos come from to begin with? Did you import them from the iPad into iPhoto on your Mac? Is that what you are saying here?

• Can't get photo's from iphone to iphoto 09

I did a clean install of osx and did not back up my photos dumb I know, now I have 73 photos on my iphone but iphoto 09 only imported the camera roll album of 11 photos the other photo albums don't import and if I sync under photos tab in itunes it says will wipe out any photos on my iphone that are not in iphoto, help can I get these old photos off my iphone and into iphoto??

That's not the same problem. The OP wanted to import photos he had synced, not photos from the Camera Roll. If you had the same problem, the same answer would work for you.
If you need to import photos you took with the iPhone, try using Image Capture instead of iPhoto. If the issue is with iPhoto, Image Capture will let you import to anywhere on your hard drive. It's in Applications, comes with every Mac.

• Move Photo Files back in the iPhoto Library

Before a few months ago, I had not checked the "copy files into the library" (or something similar, my iPhoto is French-speaking...).
As a result, whereas my newer photo files are in the iPhoto library special folder, the older ones are not (there are plenty of them).
I have successfully moved my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive, all is well for the newer files, but how do I handle those files that are not in the library?
Ideally I would like them to be integrated in the library so I don't have to bother anymore, very much in the way iTunes can copy all files in the iTunes Library, basically.

Migoo
In the iPhoto Library Folder/ Originals you now have alias files for these pics. You need to copy the full files into the Originals folder and overwrite the aliases that represent them.

• My latest import photos are missing from my iphoto library but still on my ipad, how do I get them back into iphotos. I very frustrated because i just imported them from my camera and have not been able to go thru and edit the ones I want. Help please

I recently imported pictures from my camera to iphoto. I also synced my ipad. In less than 24 hours my photos are now missing from iphoto even after trying to sync my ipad again. These pictures are from a very special occasion and I did not even get time to edit. Someone help please

-Background-
My issue, which I resolved and may help you was the following:
I have an IPAD 3. I took over 5 GB of pictures on a third party camera. The car was full so I imported those pictures to my IPAD 3 and deleted them from the SD card. While on IOS 5.x, the photos on the IPAD were there under last imported.
Over the last few days, I upgraded to IOS 6. No issues.
Then, my family wanted to see the pictures from the trip. I went to the IPAD and could not find the photos. It listed 40 photos only. The last imported was there, but listed as empty. When I went into the settings>usage, it listed 5GB + of photos in the photos area. I was confused. I plugged my IPAD into ITUNES, first thinking I would get a backup asap (icloud was full after importing the photos). Then I though I would downgrade to IOS 5.
Also, itunes listed that I had 40 photos only, but 5GB of OTHER data. I was convinced the data was not lost. When I tried to browse the IPAD 3 using windows browser, the photos where NOT in the DCIM folder, so I was not able to simply "FIND" the photos and copy them to my PC.
-SOLUTION-
I downloaded third party software onto my PC called "http://www.i-funbox.com/" I fun box. I had no idea if this would work, but other forums with other issues called out similar products for iphone issues.
When I installed the program, which was free, and so far free of malware, I started to explore my IPAD file system.I found my photos, under IPAD>RAW file system>DCIM>100IMPRT.
-ROOT CAUSE-
I suspect when I upgraded to IOS 6, apple fails to register the IMPORT folder of photos as such, photos. So the file system in IOS looses sight of what is inside the last imported folder. Essentially removing them from applications such as "Photos". Why windows does not seem them, is beyond me. But the program I found did see them in raw format, and I was able to COPY them to my PC. Then I deleted them from the IPAD, because I had no other way of managing this folder in IPAD, and it was using a lot of space.

• Photo stream not working in iPhoto

I enabled icloud in iphoto but only a few photos come thru in "My Photo Stream." My shared photo streams with other people show up but no photos are showing up in the shared streams. It shows 0 photos in all of them but on my devices all my streams (shared or just my photo stream) are fine. Please help! It's frustrating!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion
is your profile signature above still valid?
I enabled icloud in iphoto but only a few photos come thru in "My Photo Stream."
My Photo Stream will only show the recent photos that are currently in iCloud, after you turn it on, - the photos added during the last 30 thirty days, and at most 1000 photos.
My shared photo streams with other people show up but no photos are showing up in the shared streams. It shows 0 photos in all of them but on my devices all my streams (shared or just my photo stream) are fine. Please help!
The Shared streams will take some time to populate. After the Yosemite upgrade I had to wait for a full day, until the shared streams showed the photos. If the do not show up after some more waiting, disable "Photos" in the iCloud System Preferences, restart the Mac, and turn it on again. Then enable it also in iPhoto again.
