Photos could not be imported

Hi:
I'm not sure if the import was interupted or what, but I imported a lot of pictures from a client, and now I am getting these messages:
"1742 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported (Would you like to import them?)"
If I click Yes, then a window pops up:
"Unreadable Files" saying "the following files could not be imported" with a list of files and an OK button. Next time I launch, same thing, with a window "the photos have been placed in the folder users/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library Recovered Photos and an OK button.
I opened the iPhoto package and deleted all of the recovered photos folders and the same thing continues.
TIA for any suggestions.

This is the response for unreadable files, which today I can't import into iPhoto.
On the Apple Website, this was the response to a similar problem for someone:
"Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes.
Start iPhoto. Does that help?
Regards
TD "
TD, I did what you said and it didn't work for me! Perhaps you know something more about it.
The error window said, Unreadable files. The following files cannot be imported, they may be invalid data,(something to that effect).
anyone have this experience? I did what it said above, the import folder is sitting on my desktop, but I didn't have the success that the man before me did when he followed the same instructions.

Trying to download my pictures to IPhoto with my new Nikon S6300 camera keep getting the message the file could not be imported as the file is unreconizable format. I had no problem with my old Canon camera. Please help

I am having the same problem which has happened very infrequently before. Generally it's one photo and happened when my battery died.
However today I tried to download six photos.
None would download including several others for a total of 21 that would not download.
Since I had just installed a new powered hub and added three new external 4T hard drives, I got concerned that it was the hub. Then got really worried that I'd have problems with the data I have been backing up.
However following this sequence of events, I've determined it's not the hub, but still don't know what is causing the problem.
    (1) Put a fresh battery in the camera - same results
(1.5) Used a different port in the new hub - same results
    (2) Put the card in the card slot in the back of my iMac - no problems except that one image I knew about last week. The six new images imported.
    (3) Tried again using the cable - still same error
    (4) Changed cables - my husband has the same camera - still same error
    (4) Put the card in his camera with his cable - still same error
    (5) Put the card in a card reader and used the same slot in the new hub - no problems - same one wouldn't import but message that there are no new photos to import.
    (6) Moved the offending one image to the Trash while the card was in the card reader
    (7) Put the card back into my camera and used my cable. iPhoto had no error and displayed the message there are no new photos.
    Conclusion:
    Not the camera
    Not the cable
    Not the hub
Must remove bad photo from the card
However, I have not had to do that before. I went through several imports on vacation when there was one bad image and just ignored it each time.
Any idea why this is happening now?
    Thank you

Here's a test you can run:

  • Importing photos from CF card to lightroom. Results say files could not be imported as they could not be read.

Please help.  I'm trying to import photos from my CF card and lightroom says "The following files could not be imported because they could not be read."  Can someone explain a step by step way to import these photos please as I am not that proficient on such matters?!

So, I'm replying to myself I guess because I figured it out!   Go to Import in lightroom, choose Destination which is bottom right corner, select applications and then select Adobe Photoshop CS5.  I'm not sure why the lightroom application did not show up under applications, but I tried this and it worked.  Also not sure if I clicked any other Adobe application it would have worked, but I don't plan to change anything unless someone tells me this is an issue.
This is most simplistic way for me to explain it and if I can understand it anyone can.  This worked for me the first time, hopefully it will be that easy for you!

You may be able to download and install the update from here: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
If I upgrade to Yosemite will I be forced to go to the new Photos program
No. After upgrading (and of course make a back up first) you will need to update iPhoto to v9.6.1 (you won't be able to do this prior to upgrading). Here's how:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Photos is v1 of a new app, as yes it's not as mature as iPhoto. It uses a different technology for working with external editors. That requires Adobe to write an extension to let it hook into the new app. Not done yet, neither has anyone else.
Going forward: iPhoto will run on OS 10.10., but there is no guarantee for subsequent versions of the OS. You might want to factor that into your anger term thinking.

  • The Following Files could not be imported

I was on vacation and was emptying my digital camera into my G4 laptop into iPhoto 5 (same OS 10.3.9 as i have on my imac G5). Now, that I'm home, I'm trying to import those photos into my iPhoto on my G5. I copied all the folder/files over to my desktop with no problem and filed them properly into the iPhoto Library directory. But, when I try to drag the photo files into iPhoto, it starts to import and then i get this error: "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I get this same error if I go the Add to Library (apple + O) option as well.
I haven't changed the file types at all--they're still .jpg
I dont' get what the problem is. I've dragged .psd files into iPhoto before and it's been fine.
I was trying to find a way to sync the two iPhoto's up together, but that doesn't seem to be an option.
    Anyhelp would be great. Thanks.

    Hi upscene,
If you dragged the files/folders directly into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder, that is your problem. Photos have to be imported. when they are imported, iPhoto copies them into the library.
    close iPhoto
What you need to do is drag out ONLY the folders you dragged into the library folder in the finder. Drag them to the desktop, and now open iPhoto
Drag the folders from the desktop into an open iPhoto viewing window to import them.
Here is more info for you:
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.
As far as the syncing, there is really no way to sync two working libraries.
I have an iMac and an iBook. I use the iMac for all my iPhoto editing, organizing etc. I import all photos to the iMac.
Every couple of weeks i copy the iPhoto Library folder from the iMac to my iBook Pictures folder, thus replacing the old library with the newer one from the iMac. Since I have the same username on both computers this worked out great for me.
When on vacation I use the iBook to download my photos to, but I use Image Capture and put them in dated folders. When I get home I just copy the dated folders to the iMac and import them into iPhoto there.

  • The project could not be imported

OK my wife and I filmed most of our vacation using iMovie on my ipad but I can't seem to export the file. I tried everything to possible open the file. I unfortunately made the error of removing imovie and reinstalling it which made the matter worse. I have the file which is pretty big but can't do anything with it. I can't put it back into iMovie and I can't import it. On the iPad it will not see it. And when I try to open it on I get an alert "the project could not be imported." I just want to be able to open the files is it anyway to do so with out using iMovie? Please help.

There is a little trick you can do to extract the videos from an .imoviemobile file.
    Rename the extension to .zip
Then double click the file, it will "uncompress" it.
This will create a folder called "My Project",
inside that folder is one called "assets".
This will have you video and any photos from the project.
In future I would suggest you do not record within the iMovie app.
If something goes wrong, or you delete the app then the video is gone.

  • Unreadable Files - The following could not be imported

I have saved images off a photo sharing site to a jpeg format only about 52KB in size. After I have saved the images I tried to import into iphoto and get the msg "Unreadable files - The following could not be imported" After reviewing the info on the file there is nothing different then files that have imported successfully.
I have tried to resave the file and also checked to ensured that nothing is locked and it is a usable file. Also to see how other files work with the import I tried deleting a image recently imported from my camera and import it again from the IPhoto library folder and then received the same msg. However there are other random images that will import.

I had this exact problem after I upgraded to OS X 10.4.11 and iPhoto 5. It took me two days to figure out it was with Quicktime. When I went to Software Update under the Apple Menu, there was a security update for Quicktime listed. When I installed that, iPhoto went back to working perfectly.
Obviously this update isn't just a security update alone.

    JCLandivar:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you can recover those photos whose modified file you got rid of. Try doing a Revert to Original on them and see if that will bring those back.
If you have a lot of keywords assigned to files you may be able to recover them, at least for the photos that are still recognized by iPhoto by following the procedure in Tutorial #1. Then move the originals folder to the desktop and import it and its contents into a new library. Since the process is non-destructive it's worth a try.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
