Photos didn't update iPhoto photos

Updates. Ugh. The fabulous new Photos app came up with no photos in it. Not a one. I have hundreds of pictures in iPhoto. After panicking and running around in circles, I figured out that iPhoto is still on the hard drive, and when I open it, it shows all my pictures. However, I can't import those pictures into Photos. When I use the import command, the iPhoto Library is grayed out. When I drag the iPhoto library into Photos it says there is nothing in the file that it can recognize.

1. Quit both iPhoto and Photos.
2. Open Photos holding the Alt (option) key.
3. When prompted select your iPhoto Library and follow the on screen steps for importing the iPhoto Library to Photos.

  • When emailing a photo from the updated iPhoto, how do I find the CC and BCC button, and how do I send to a group from my address book?

when emailing a photo from the updated iPhoto, how do I find the CC and BCC button, and how do I send to a group from my address book?

The email function from iPhoto is pretty basic. The only Bcc available is to yourself (in iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced), cc: does not appear to be available at all, and it does not appear you can email to a group.
You can change this by going to iPhoto > Preferences > General and next to where it says Email photos using: select Mail. If you do this you have all the options available in Mail including Cc: and Bcc: and the ability to drag a group from Address Book into the mail addresses.
    Best of luck.

  • Unreadable photos when trying to import old photos to new updated iPhoto??

After updating to Yosemite and updating iPhoto to 9.6, when trying to import all my old photos, it says they are all unreadable.  How do I update the file format of the photos to import them?

You found the right way to do it.  Never import an iPhoto Library into iPhoto. Just open the iPhoto Library by double-clicking it. You are lucky, that iPhoto prevented you from importing the iPhoto Library. It would have created a terrible mess of duplicate photos in all sizes.

  • If you edit photos in iPhoto, will Photo Stream (iCloud) update the photos on your other devices?

Am I dreaming or will Photo Stream (iCloud) update photos on my Macbook when I edit them (enhance, crop, rotate, etc) on my iMac (automatically or otherwise)? If so, do I need to do anything besides the basic Photo Stream setup to make this happen? The movie on Apple's site about iCloud seems to imply this is true, but it's vague. I'm unable to find anything about this in the small amount of Help articles about iCloud. Thanks for any help.

  • Picture sync didn't update smart photo album

I have a smart photo album that contains all the pictures that are tagged or contain my daughter. this smart album is synced to my apple tv.
I recently re-synced my apple tv to include a new album of a recent family vacation, and that was added to the apple tv fine, but it did not update the smart album. basically, the apple tv said, okay, i'll add the new album like you have checked, and I'm done.
    Why?

I am having the same issue. I had four smart photo albums that were synced to AppleTV, but when I uncheck one the smart albums it still syncs those photos.
I read in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1971808 that they had to restore their AppleTV. I do not want to restore it because it is a 160gb unit and I don't want to have to redo all the syncing over wireless.
Please, is there a way to get this to not happen? I unchecked all the smart albums, synced and it showed no photos on the AppleTV. But, when I resynced it with the three wanted albums, all the photos appear from all four of the original albums.
Is there a cache file somewhere that I need to delete?
    Thanks!

  • Photo stream not updating in Photos on iMac

My photos stream is working on iPhone and iPad but not on the iMac - it accesses photos from about 10 days ago, that's from before Photos was installed but it won't automatically pick up new photos taken on iPhone or iPad since Photos replaced iPhoto.
If I mail the new photos to myself I can import them into my photo library but they aren't appearing in the photo stream.
I have iCloud photo sharing turned off because I have w-a-a-ay too many photos in my library to store that way. Shouldn't Photo Stream work independently of iCloud photo sharing?

I was able to force a download of my photostream by disabling Automatic Import and Automatic Upload in Preferences>Photostream.

  • Why does photo stream not update latest photos to ATV?

Noticed this weekend when I posted photos from my iPhone, iPad, or iMac to photo stream all my devices immediately updated all devices with the new pictures from iCloud, my apple TV does not do this anymore.  I needed to turn off photo stream in settings and then turn on photo stream to get the new pictures.  It used to be automatic like all my other Apple products.

This issue is has been resolved.  The updates are much slower that to an iPad or iPhone however it is now automatically updating without any manipulation.

  • Can you revert back to iPhoto once you updated to Photos

Can you revert back to iPhoto once you updated to Photos?

Can you revert back to iPhoto once you updated to Photos?
The update to Photos leaves iPhoto installed, and also lets the iPhoto Library compatible with iPhoto. It creates a new Photos Library, that is sharing the photos with the iPhoto Library, so it will not need much extra space. You can use both libraries independently of each other. Edits you do in either library will not be visible in the other.
Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
Just do not uninstall iPhoto or delete the library, if you want an option to revert back. Also, make a full backup before doing the upgrade.

  • Clarification of iPhoto/Photo Stream

    Hi,
I am having difficulty understanding how iPhoto handles photos taken on an iOS device(iPhone or iPad).  Currently I have my iPhoto set to do an automatic import when taking picture.  I take picture on iPhone, it shows up on iPad photo stream.  It shows up in iPhoto photo stream file.  Now I delete the photo in the photo stream on iPhone.  It deletes on iPad photo stream and in iPhoto photo stream.  However the photo is in iPhoto in pHotos and events.  So what is the best way to manage this.  Should I turn off the 'Automatic import' in iPhoto or have it save the photo in iPhoto photos/events?  If so I suspect the photo will not be saved to photos and events.  So the photo will only be in the photo stream.  Whcih leads to my question 'when will the photo be saved in the photos or events in iPhoto.  If it sits in the Photo Stream is there any risk of losing the picture?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

Apples instruction are here - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
PS is not a storage place - it is a transmission place - it holds the lessor last 30 days or 1000 photos - if you want to keep photos you eed to import them into iPhoto - this can be automatic or manual as you choose - if it is manual then only the photos you manually import are saved in iPhoto - if it is automatic then eveny photo in PS is saved
    It is pretty simple
So what is the best way to manage this.  Should I turn off the 'Automatic import' in iPhoto or have it save the photo in iPhoto photos/events?
That totally depends on what you want

  • Am I able to update iphoto (USA) for free after installing OS X Yosemite?

I currently do not have access to my photos and the updated iphoto application needed to open them is not available in the US App Store.  Is there any way to get access to my photos without paying extra?  Thanks for your help.
    Soooo disappointed with Apple,
    HG

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Updated iPhoto to 9.2.3, lost majority of photos - help!

We updated iPhoto as recommended by Apple to version 9.2.3 and immediately had trouble with no photos showing in iPhoto.  The photo folder on the Mac drive is empty, and was the primary location for storing and accessing photos. After finding the iPhoto backup library on the My Book external drive, I imported and only recovered 1,000 of 10,000+ photos. The recovery files are dated with photos from 2005 - 2009, and nothing from 2010 to present.  It also required me to update the iPhoto library file upon import, something which I expected would automatically occur as part of the application update.
I am running an  iMac with OS X 10.6.8.
Already tried to rebuild the library by launching iPhoto and holding command/option.  No new files were recovered. Any tips/advice is much appreciated to help recover 4 years of family memories!
Frustrating to see the continued degradation of Apple's competive advantage: seamless interoperability and ease of use.  The iphone synch with itunes is a whole other discussion...
    Thanks,
    Scott

Terrence: thanks for taking the time to reply. Here are replies to your questions:
    Pictures folder = yes
Back up historically performed manually to My Book.
Wife performed the iPhoto update yesterday and did not back up prior to update.
Why did you not restore? = new version of iPhoto not able to find or recognize the iPhoto library on the Mac drive. When launching iPhoto application after the update, and the application is attempting to pull from the Mac drive database, it is a never ending spinning wheel of white dashes as if searching but never finding.
Why import from the backup? = Since no photos will load from the Mac drive database, I attempted to restore from the backup on My Book as the source
Clarify the 'update the iPhoto library file' = when attempting to import the iPhoto library backup file from My Book (after the above sequence and failing in attempts to load from the Mac picture database), iPhoto required the My Book iPhoto library file to be updated, or reconfigured (can't confirm the exact language here), before proceeding.  It was definitely a separate prompt and process from the app update.
Why are you mentioning crash reports when there is no mention of crashes? = after the initial post, I went back to my attempts to relaunch iPhoto and it crashed multiple times. Thought I would add in this thread (10 minutes later) in case it was helpful to someone assisting to resolve these issues.
Certainly not looking to editorialize, but I've been using Mac products since the Apple IIe.  By no means an expert, as you can see by my problems here , but the reality is that the proliferation of peripherals makes it increasingly challenging for the average tech user to navigate compatibility, synching devices, etc.  Heck, I had to spend $1,500 on a new iMac just to get my iPad funcational a couple of years ago (my Mac Mini didn't support a current OS to run an iTunes version needed to activate the iPad).
Not hating, I'm an unabashed Mac lover (9 devices and growing).  Also not ignorant to the challenges that developers and us 'tech users' face in the real world.
Thanks and again I truly appreciate your input!

  • Variations of colored dots appear on photos after updating iphoto

After installing OS X Mavericks and updating iPhoto, I noticed that all of my photos appear to have small little dots that are different colors. I can zoom into the images and if I was to edit the photos and choose enhance, the dots end up enhanced and larger. I've exported an image from iphoto and saved it as a jpeg, when hitting the space bar to preview the image, the image has white blocks covering the whole photo. I know that with the previous version of iPhoto my images didn't show anything like this before. Something very strange is going on and I'm concerned my photos are corrupt. I've included a couple screen shots of the problems.

That's an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and original file has been broken.
If you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto lost some photos after the update

    Hi!
I Recently updated to iPhoto 11.
After some time I realized that iPhoto didn't show me events that I had before the update.
iPhoto don't show me the thumbnails. There is nothing there, no exclamation sign... Nothing. And when double click on the photo it appears a big exclamation sign with a black background. When I go to file/ reveal in Finder it cant find it.
I tried rebuilding the library with cmd +alt! I tried all the options. I also tried with iPhoto library Manager.
What else I can do? There are 5 years of photos. I also didn't have a backup with time machine.
    thanks!!!

If the photos are missing and you don't have a back up well then your possibilities are very limited. Best I can suggest is to try ands if there are any recoverable files. Download File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

These apps cannot be accepted by your Apple ID.
These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID, and they will be available in that Apple ID's Purchases list. If you don't have access to that Apple ID and want to receive future updates, you will need to purchase the applications.
please help me to fix this problem
    Thanks
    Krishna.

You need to either delete and buy them, or get whoever holds that Apple ID to tell Apple to release them. On a Mac, deleting the applications won't affect their data, but that should be backed up anyway.
