Photos Dissapeared

For some unknown reason I had about three months worth of pictures disappear from my Library.
I immediately did a Command-Option and chose every option but it didn't bring them back.
Some good news is that this happened right after an import of some camping pictures I had taken.
So since I knew the names of the pictures I used Spotlight to locate them. I also searched for all pictures in the month of August and found them, but they are not showing up in iPhoto (they both were under the correct iPhoto directory)
So they are still there, but why are they not showing up in iPhoto?
Like I said I rebuilt the thumbnails, database and tried recovering orphaned photos, but nothing.
Any help is greatly needed...
Thanks.

"iPhoto directory" - I assume that you meant "iPhoto library"
As near as I can figure, once iPhoto "forgets" that photos exist, there's no way to bring them back the easy way (or even the "correct way," for that matter). I found a similar situation involving photos that I had deliberately trashed and, of course, I correctly emptied the iPhoto trash can. However, they were still on the hard drive in the correct locations in the library.
Although I'm still confused as to how and why that happened (and I have been unable to reproduce the occurrence), I was grateful because I wanted one of the photos back. Like you, I did the CMD-Option and selected all checkboxes but it made no difference - iPhoto still refused to acknowledge the existence of those photos.
The only thing that worked was to do exactly what I advise everyone else never to do. I used the finder to "tamper" with the library. I moved the photos to the desktop and then imported them into iPhoto as if they were brand new photos. It worked.
Before you utilize my solution, you might wish to make a copy of your library "just in case."

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This is often a symptom of a damaged Library database.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My photostream photos dissapeared - only the last 1000 show...where are my old photos???

    Hi,
i am totally confused and frustrated with iCloud.
i had many many photos on my Photostream and am removing all i can from my iphone (after synchroniszing on the cloud) as i run often out of space on the phone. whatever happened, all of a sudden, i can only see the last 1000 images on my Photostream - all of the others are GONE! i havent touched nor deleted anything. on the contrary, i even upgraded my storage to 55GB to be sure i have enough space (iphone reports free 38 GB on my iCloud space). I cant find my older Photostream photos any more neither when connecting from my iphone, nor from my iPhoto and aparently they are nowhere to be found on my iCloud. WHERE are my photos??!!! it will be a huge disaster if i lost them and not sure how to start understanding paying for a reliable cloud and loosing it all? anyone any idea???

First of all, photo stream storage is separate from regular icloud storage, so buying more space is not necessary.
When you take a photo on a device that has photo stream turned on, that photo is added to the local photo stream group and uploads to icloud's servers, which then download the pics to other devices where they are also stored in their photo stream group.  After 30 days, the photo is deleted from the server, but not the devices.  (No more than 1000 pics are accepted, after which old ones are delete to make room for new ones.)
If, however, you turn off photo stream on one device, the photos in the photo stream group will be deleted.  If you later turn it back on, then only photos on the server will download to the group.  Pictures that were deleted from the server due to the 30 day rule will no longer be available.
It is advised that whenever you have photos appearing in the photo stream group, you move them to a permanent album if you wish to save them.
In short, photo stream is a conduit for copying photos from one device/computer to another - never treat it as some kind of permanent storage service; it isn't.

  • Page Text and Photos dissapear when I Publish

Here is a new problem I am encountering and wondering if there is anyone who knows how to resolve this. I have one certain page on my website that when I publish it to the desktop, and open it, the page header is there, but all the text and photos are gone. I'm using the "black" theme and I believe I used the welcome template. The page consists of a text box and photos, using the media place holders. The text is just white arial font, like on all my other pages. Since this is a page full of people writing in to the website, the correspondence from each person is separated by a graphic line. I have used the graphic line on other pages to separate want ads and on those pages, I am not having a publishing problem. I have already recreated this page from scratch once. It published fine a few times then one day all the text and pictures have disappeared again. Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong? I've tried deleting the cashe and we've tried "repair permissions - disk utilities."

Posting more info on this problem:
I did a test and think I have found a clue on what is going on. I carefully recreated the original page from scratch first with text only. I published it to make sure the text would publish. Then I added the photos back to the page using the image placeholders. I then published again and both text and photos are still there. Next, I duplicated the page, called it Mail Page #2, and noticed as soon as the page was duplicated, the section with text and photos now has a "text Imaging Indicator" on it in that section. the original page does not have that indicator. When I published the site again and this page now is publishing blank (all black, text and photos missing; only the header remains and that actually is a text w/shadow, so its an image). The original page where the imaging indicator did not turn on, that page is still publishing normally. So this has something to do with iWeb converting that section that has text and pictures, into an image. Other than that, I am still at a loss as to why it happens or how to avoid it. If anyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it. I will post back if I have additional info.

  • Dissapearing photos

I have a Photo 20GB IPod and have had troubles on and off with my photos dissapearing from my IPod screen and then reappearing from time to time. They always are there when I connect the IPod to the computer. If anyone has an idea to what's going on with my IPod, let me know. Cheers,
    Steve

I have an IPod 30GB and my photos disappear after about a week. I can fully charge my IPod and they still don't reappear until I sync up again and then they are there for a while again and then disappear. I am suspicious of the software. I would be willing to bet the photos are still on the hard drive but are getting corrupted by either the pod going into a sleep mode or some other setting or choices that are made from the scroll wheel.
The only thing that shows up under Photos> is Slideshow Settings> and no photo folders like were previously there at the last time of sync.

  • Setting Up iCloud Photo Library

I am a little confused with setting this up on my iPhone and my iPad.  I have turned it on, on my iPad but I am scared to enable it on my iPhone.
It seems as if when I turned it on on my iPad, photos dissapeared and I have no clue where they are.
On my iPhone I have 83 photos in my Camera Roll under the photo tab, but 1000 in my collection in the photo tab.  I want everythign in my collection to go to the iCloud Photo Library, and dont want to chance losing them.
Any idea if this will work

If you select Download Originals it does exactly what it says - it downloads the original photograph. If you have 20GB of photos in your iCloud photo library your computer will have 20GB of photos when it is finished downloading them from the cloud. If you select Optimize Mac Storage you will download only previews of the photos and thereby save lots of space. The downside to this is if you want to edit a photo or export it, you’ll have to be connected to the internet so your computer can download the original.
I’ve chosen Optimize Mac Storage for my MBA because I don’t have enough space to download all the original photos.

  • Photo.app crashes. Can not delete or sync photos. Stuck!

On my iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.1:
Photo.app crashes whenever i try to delete certain photos from my camera roll. It freezes and I have to exit the app with the front botton. I have the crash logs on my computer.
The iPhone appears in iTunes, however photos do not sync.
The iPhone does NOT appear in Image Capture, iPhoto, or other photo importing programs.
Now I am really stuck - ! I have no way to delete the (presumably corrupted) photos from my iPhone!
If I "Erase all content and settings" from the iPhone, it once again appears (empty) in Image Capture. However, if I then restore the iPhone from a backup, the photo roll is restored and it has the same problem. If I do not restore the iPhone, I lose all my apps, contact info, etc.
I am an Apple developer (MacOS, iOS) so I have expert skills tackling problems like this, but now I'm stumped!

I had the same problem and spent 4 hours troubleshooting with Apple Tech Support. We uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, drivers and checked every setting that had anything to do with my iPhone. As usual I was told that I need to restore my phone which is always my last option. I actually read your post and began to panic as it became clear that even after a reset I would get the same photos back when I synched and restored. Last time that I restored to new it took me 3 solid hours to tweak my phone back to the way it was. When I realized that I was basically screwed and was going to lose my photos I began to email them to myself one at a time. When I got to one picture I discovered that I had found the corrupt photo. I was not able to send it as it turned into a question mark when I tried to send to myself. I tried to delete 50 times but it froze my phone each time and wouldnt remove itself from my camera roll. I tried to select photos but each time that photo appeared in the window the app crashed and shut itself down. I had scheduled an appointment with the genious bar and figured I would call tech suoport one last time before I went through that nightmare and while I was on hold I pluged my phone into my computere and tried to delete the phote while plugged into my laptop and out of nowhere an error window popped up notifying me that my photo app experienced an error and would repair itself which within four seconds it did and the corrupt photo dissapeared. I cant tell you how relieived I was and my phone works perfectly well now. I tried to explain the results to the tech that finally answered but he didn't seem to care that much. I hope this works for you next time.

  • Photo not appearing, fade to black

New mac User. just imported all my photos to iPhoto and its been working wonderfully but now its messing up. I was editing a photo and I was resizing it and after I resized it to 1x2 and I tried to zoom in the photo dissapeared. now whenever I view the photo in my normal library (a.k.a. double clicking on it) it just goes black, and if I put it in editing mode (or any other picture for that matter) the photo doesnt show up.
    Thanks

    Erik:
When you try to view the photos in the edit window or largest thumbnail size and get a black window does that window have an "!" in the middle? That's an indication that iPhoto has broken the link to the original file. You can try to recover the library by rebuilding it as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't resurrect the library you'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder as described below:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
This is caused by a damaged database file, Library6.iPhoto. You make it easier to recover from such damaged files in the future see the tip at the end of my signature.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • [tip] search for / selecting NO keywords (selection photos without a keyword)

Probably it is old news but I couldn't find it here that fast.
I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
The trick is to add a special keyword you normally not use like (only) "_" (underscore) to all photos without a keyword. But there is no way to select photos wihtout a keyword... So I came up with a two step strategy and this trick only cost 2-3 minutes with 20.000 photos:
Add the "_" keyword to all you photos.
Select all photos with a real keyword by shift clicking on all keywords tags except "_".
Remove the "_" keyword from those photos.
Now select the "_" keyword or search on the "_" keyword.
A how to, in 14 steps:
    1. Hit G, goto library (in left panel) and click on "all photographs"
    2. Select all photos by pressing ctrl-a
    3. Wait till LR is ready displaying all used keywords in the right keywords panel
    4. In right panel under keywording/keyword tags add the keyword "_"
    5. Wait till LR is ready updating all your photos (20.000 photos: 1 minute)
    6. Goto "Keyword tags" in the left panel
    7. Select the (suppose the second) keyword just after the "_" keyword by left clicking.
    8. Scroll down till the end in the keyword list
    9. Now, shift click on the last keyword
    10. You now selected all keywords except the "_" keyword and all are highlihted
    11. Select all photo's (ctrl-a)
    12. Wait till LR shows all the keywords in the Keywording/keyword tags panel on the right
check: the keyword "_" should have no asterix like "_*" if so: goto step 1!
    13. Remove the "_" keyword and press enter
    14. Wait till LR is ready
From now on while selecting the "_" keyword or searching on the keyword "_" LR will only show the photos without a (real) keyword.
Of course, as soon as you add keyword(s) to your foto(s) you have to delete the "_" keyword.
Speed tip: when starting keywording, select the photo you like to add real keywords, ctrl-k brings you directly to the keyword tags panel in edit mode, hit backspace (to delete the "_" keyword and start typing your keywords and hit enter or tab when done. Then immediately (of course) the photo dissapears from your "_" keyword selection photos and the next photo is selected and is waiting for you to hit ctrl-k and start again. Look mam, "no mouse used!"
    Have fun!

    >I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
There is actually, and it is much simpler:
Using the Find Panel, choose Text: Keywords and Rule: Are Empty.

  • Photos missing after youtube upload from imovie export

I've got a stumper on my hands.  i am working on a project that is 1/2 photos and 1/2 video.
I've exported an imovie project using the Share using the export quicktime settings under LAN/intranet.
the file plays fine on my computer but  when i upload it to youtube and view it the photos dissapear?
the transition's on either end of the photo is shown but the photo itself is not.  for instance if i showed a photo with a fade in and fade out the transitions apear, but not the actual photo.
anyone got any ideas on this one?

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • IPhoto and Aperture referenced library issues

    Hi,
For the last couple of days I've been busy trying to get my iPhoto/Aperture library to work properly. I recently created a referenced library using Aperture because of lack of space on my internal ssd. I can see all of my Projects, thumbnails, metadata etc. in both iPhoto and Aperture when my external drive is disconnected. However, there are two major issues:
    1) Most of the video thumbnails are broken, both in Aperture and iPhoto. By double clicking a thumbnail of a video (.mov, .avi etc.) it sometimes starts playing (with the external drive connected), sometimes it doesn't, totally inconsistent. I can export the video and it works just fine.
    2) While using iPhoto with the external drive disconnected, all Events are there, the thumbnails are there, everything looks ok, but I can only view some of the previews/photos after double clicking the thumbnails. A dialogue opens up saying "The volume for [imagefilename] cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume..", but I can actually see the full size preview behind this dialogue. By clicking "Cancel" the photo dissapears and is replaced by a black screen with a grey exclamation mark. This does not occur while using Aperture, I can see all of my previews in full glory when the external drive is disconnected. However, with the external drive connected everything works in iPhoto (except above mentioned issue with videos).
Please boys and girls, I need your help on this one!

I don;t use iPhoto much so I'm no expert but looking at other posts asking a similar question sems to indicate iPhoto is not capable of doing this.
See Can iPhoto view pictures on a disconnected external drive in a unified photo library? for one example.
Again if Aperture is working correctly on the referenced images on the disconnect drive and iPhoto is not you will need to ask the iPhoto folks.
