Photos does not alphabetize faces

I have recently updated IPhoto to Photos on my MacBook Pro with Yosemite.  As I was trying to familiarize myself with the new software, one of the problems I encountered was that I used to be able to organize in "Faces" in alphabetical order.  I can't find where to do that now.  I looked in preferences but there was nothing there to help me.  Can anyone tell me if this is still part of the software?

iPhoto does work and there is an upgrade:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Photo does not show up in Adobe Elements

I have a MacBook and have iphoto set up to open the edit with Adobe Photoshop Elements and not with iphot oediting tool. I had version 8 of APE and upgraded to APE 9 - now the photo does not show up in the Adobe window when I try to edit. How do I fix this ?

Most likely you have set the wrong file as the external editor. You don't want the obvious one; that's just a link to the welcome screen. Go back and choose this one, which is hidden away inside the folder Support Files:

Adobe now hides the editor - what looks like it is not - you want the editor hidden in the support folder - see http://forums.adobe.com/message/3955558#3955558 for details

  • Photo does not open in Photoshop as before from Iphoto

I have a large library with approx 9700 pics. In the past, I was able to double click on a photo in Iphoto and it would open Photoshop CS (PS). PS opens but the chosen photo does not open. I have also noticed that all of the albums in Iphoto are not seen in the PS file browser and that the photos are in numbered folders that I did not create.
    thanks for any help.

    Hi jwilman,
    To answer your first question:
You must have done an Archive and Install and the Scripting folder for PS did not get put back where it belonged. You must find that folder and put it back in the root library. or reinstall PS to get the folder.
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here.
    To answer your second question:
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Am I correct that Photos does not support external editors? i.e., in Aperture, I click Photos Edit with.... and can open in Photoshop or various plug-ins. Changes are then automatically saved back to Aperture. Nonexistent in Photos?

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

  • Design Studio - Display a dummy image when searched photo does not exist

    hello,
I would like to display an employee photo, which should be searched on the server folder with URL.
Each photo name in my folder is : "employeeId.png".
But some employees do not have a photo, and in this case I try to display a dummy photo, which I have in the same folder with employee id 00000000.
    My variables are :
    - URLlink variable is global variable type URL, which gives a path to my folder with employees photos
    - empnb variable is filled with employee id through getSelectedMember on cross table
    - filename variable to search a photo on the server
    - filename0 variable for those employees for which photo does not existe
I tried to test the existence of an employee photo with getHeigh() method or getImage() method, to check if a photo filename set in Image1 is a real
one. Cause if a photo does not exist, the Design studio put by default a small black cube inside Image.
Unfortunatelly these tests are not working .
    My script:
var filename =  URLlink + empnb + ".png";    // existing employee photo
    var filename0 = URLlink + "00000000" + ".png";  // dummy profile photo
IMAGE_1.setImage(filename); //Try to put a photo found on the server
    var height = IMAGE_1.getHeight();
    if (height == -1)
    { IMAGE_1.setImage(filename0);   }
    else   {IMAGE_1.setImage(filename);}
Does anyone have other idea how to test if a photo exist or not in my folder.
    Many thanks!
    Bea

I do not think it is possible today (at least not via checking of the image size). Such function would require
    * code extension in image component -> boolean IMAGE.exists()
    or
    * could be made by custom image implementation via design studio SDK. This custom image would send a request via Ajax and check response status. in case not existing some dummy images would be placed.
for both options there are no plans as of today.
the only option I see today is to generate in the folder "dummy" images for all employes who do not have any real image.

  • When I place photos on the cloud to share with friends, the photo IDinformation I have entered with the photo does not transfer.  Is there a way to have the text follow the photo in the cloud?

When I place an Aperture photo on the cloud to share with friends, the idenfifcation information I have entered for the photo does not transfer to the cloud and thus my friends get only the photo.  Is there a setting I am missing that would allow the text to go along with the photograph?

The photo stream will transfer the EXIF information set by the camera and the filname/version name. Try to get any information you want to transfer into the filename by batch changing the filename with "write to master" enabled. Aloso, you can set a comment, when sharing the image to the Photo Stream.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.

  • Photos does not let one edit in external editor ....

I'm shocked , taken aback indeed , Photos does not allow editing in external software , i.e. Photoshop , .... or am I wrong.
If it is the case it does not allow external editing , especially in RAW , then I am not impressed .
iPhoto was rubbish ... really it was .. but if Photos does not allow editing other than within it'self ... well I'm sorry.... it's pure mince ( as we say in Scotland .

Yes, it's terrible. They've basically ripped away much of the key functionality of iPhoto making it really hard to "get" your photos.
All you can do until someone hopefully provides a third party plug in (or Apple sees sense) is to try and locate the photo file manually:
    1. Locate Photos Library.photoslibrary
    2. Right click and select Show Package Contents
    3. Open the Masters folder
    4. Three ways to find it:
Delve manually: in this folder, all your photos are organised by year, month, and supposedly day, and then various subfolders within that but actually it's inconsistent and/or the photos and video are using different time zones*. So you may need to check the previous day or a day later.
Search within Masters, eg "Created date" is "within last" "5 days" or whatever suits you
Right click the photo in Photos to get its file name, and search for that as a Finder search. However the photos are so "locked away" that you can't even click Command to see the file path in the search results (as you can usually do with search results). You will need to click "show all in Finder" and then finally you'll get to the actual image (and be able to see the file path).
As an example, this is what the file path looks like for an image of mine:
    Photos Library.photoslibrary -> Masters -> 2015 -> 04 -> 12 -> 20150412-100955 -> IMG_1881.PNG
    *Note on subfolder craziness:
As an example, I took two photos on my iPhone today within one minute of each other.  They are in two different subfolders.  A week ago I took six photos over three hours, and they are all in the same subfolder. So it's a complete mess.

If you launch Script Editor and open the Help menu, you will see the APpleScript Help and a Language Guide:
To see, which commands an application understands, open the File menu in Script editor and select Open Dictionary.  In the list locate "Photos".
You will see examples how o script Photos.

I watched that video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJMi5l9Ru-g     and tried this to do the parallax scrolling with the image this on my page. Unfortunately, my photo does not fit in the whle screen, even if I take a . jpg image  3000 px wide. ( look here ) I have no idea how I can get the photo to fit in the whole screen.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again,
I'm sorry, but nothing works and I don't understand, what you mean. I will show you again with no other item on the page. I draw a rectangle which snaps each of the lines at the outside.
I got rid of the stroke and the fill.
I filled with a .jpg image 3000 px wide.
For the future parallax scrolling I need to set up the photo in vertical tile. And this is, how it shows on the screen.
I still have no idea, what I made wrong. Thanks for your help

  • Key photo does not sync

I have a Mac Mini.  My photos are stored on an external hard drive.  I import them into iPhoto.  When I sync to my iPad the key photo does not show anymore.  This has only just started.

Upon further study the problem runs deeper. There is not much syncing going on at all. This mobile me sync business is confusing. I've turned syncing back on, reset contacts in mobile me (supposedly) with contacts from my computer, but the test contacts I made online in mobile me remain there. The photos and I believe other changes do not appear either. I don't think mobile me is updating. Something is broken that's for sure.
