Photos exist in the computer but have disappeared in the iPhoto library

I needed more space on my hard drive and realized I had about 200 photos double loaded in a Nikon Photo program and in iPhoto. When I deleted them from the Nikon program, my iPhoto Library would suddenly no longer load any of my 5600 photos in edit mode and said they were all 0X0 in size. The photos exist on the hard drive but is there a way to relink them to iPhoto? I tried Toad's idea of deleting the 0X0 images but my computer can't find any as the iPhoto library no longer has any names or .jpg designations on the photos. (It does if you open up the library in the black background - everything looks fine - but then on the left the only info that comes up is the day and date shot.

I don't know if this will help or not, but have your tried to rebuild the iPhoto Library? If you are using iPhoto 5 or later, hold down the Command and Option keys while you open iPhoto. iPhoto 4 and earlier is it the Shift and Option keys. At this point you will be prompted to rebuild the library.
Make a backup first though!
I have a tutorial with more details here: http://www.learntomac.com/index.php/troubleshooting/rebuilding-iphoto-library/

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.  I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one.  They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device."  I hadn't touched the camera.  The message came by itself.  I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit.  Opening it back up, the pictures were gone.  Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I lost all my photos, while repairing the Iphoto library lost most photos.. help!!!

    Hi all!
It seemed I made several stupid choices while I was trying to repair iphoto.
    1. Importing photos
When I was importing photos, Iphoto said there's not enough space in my startup disk. And it showed me some choices, and I don't exactly remember what I chose(was really tired after work)/ I think I did something and relaunch or something. And I think I forced quit when it seemed like not responding.
    2. All photos were gone
When I reopened Iphoto, all photos were gone(it seemed like.)
    3. The photos were there
So I googled like a maniac, found apple discussion. Checked iphoto library, and package contents. The photos were still in Old masters folder. The library was nearly 354gb or something.
    4. Backing up
So I found a way, "repairing database". I tried follow people's suggestion, back up before you repair. So I was trying to back up with my timemachine, but again it was saying it's backing up for 459 something GB, and I didn't have enough space in my hard drive, so I didn't back up.(stupid choice).
At this stage, the photos were still there.
    5. Repair database
Then I was trying to repair or rebuild database, and......when it was loading my enormous amount of photos 130,000photos, it was saying there might not be enough space in my startup disk, DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE? and I said....yes.
    6. Importing photos
So when it was doing its job, importing from the library, several hours passed. Then it said there's not enough space, and it stopped.
    7. Iphoto library,,,,,,nothing there.
So now,,, the iphoto library is 1.47gb.....instead of 375 something gb.
It seems the all photos are gone.
    8. the luck is.
I backed up on 28th, January. And photos from 30th, January are still in my SD card. So if I go back to 28th of January, I will only loose one day of photos.
But I don't want to loose them. I came to Kenya to build a children's library transforming an old bus, and the lost photos are when we are painting outside of the bus. The most fun part.
    9. HELP
So please help!!!! I want to do all I can do to bring those photos back.
    10. additional information
I deleted many files to have some space. When I check about this Mac, the storage shows back ups are 400 something GB.. why???
Thank you so much! Asante sana in advance.
    Bobae.

The fact that the original files are in the "Old Masters" folder is an indication that you got bit by a bug in iPhoto that occurs when an import is interrupted.
I recommended a possible fix to another user but haven't heard back from them as to whether or not it worked. It consisted of:
1 - move the "masters" folder to the Desktop.
2 - rename "Old Masters" to "Masters"
3 - rebuild the library with iPLM with the option to scavenge any orphaned photos.
It is a long shot but worth a try.
If that doesn't work you'll need to start over with a new library and import the contents of the "Old Masters" folder, several sub folders at a time.

  • How to retrieve photos directly from the iPhoto library?

I have over 18 GB and rising of photos in my iPhoto library. Suppose I had to change to a Windows machine or for some other reason I could not access my photos via iPhoto. Fanciful I know, but I am not so much concerned with the probability of something going wrong but with the calamity that would result if something did go wrong. I note that some years ago Microsoft changed the file structure of their Word files from a proprietary one to an open access one to allow easy access to the text. So how could my photos be retrieved directly from the iPhoto library?
Perhaps the answer is to send the library to a tech firm like the ones that retrieve data from damaged hard drives and they could pick off the photos and return them as a set of image files in a folder. But is it actually possible for anyone to do that?

If, at some time in the future, you want to get all of your original image files onto an external HD in folders representing the Events in your iPhoto Library here are the simple steps to follow:
1  - select all of the Events in your library.
2 - use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and setup the export as shown in this screenshot:
3 - click on the Export button, select the destination where you want to save these folders and continue.

  • "photos found in the iPhoto library that weren't imported" error message

I just bought my first iMac and was introduced to the dark side of the force (Was always a PC user and have never touched an Apple product). I transferred all my photos from my PC to the iMac Pictures folder. Then I dragged and dropped all the folders one by one into the iPhotos icon in the dock. After all the folders were transferred into the iPhoto library, I removed the original photos by dropping all of them into the Trash and thereby cleaning up my Pictures folder.
When I open up iPhoto this message appears every time, "14 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that were not imported. Would you like to import them?". It doesn't matter if you choose yes or no. It creates a "Recovered Photos" folder within the Pictures folder and there is nothing in it.
I've tried using Disk Utility in Utilities to "Repair Disk Permissions" but this didn't work.
Does anyone out there know what other options I can use?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • A photo found in the iPhoto library that was not imported

Every time I open iPhoto, I receive a message saying "A photo has been found in the iPhoto library that was not imported. Would you like to import it?" If I select yes, a box pops up saying "Unreadable file. The file was not imported, the file was missing." and then the photo's path. If I select no, the photo gets placed in a recovery file. I can see the photo in the recovery file, it is a photo that I locked (and maybe marked hidden - if you can even do both). I've tried to go into my iPhoto and unhide photos so that I can unlock the original...I've also tried unlocking the photo in the recovered file. I've tried deleting the photo in the recovery file as well...I can unlock it in Finder and delete it, but (with my limited knowledge of computers) I've determined that I must only be deleting a copy. Where is the original...I'd like to delete it. I don't even need this pic anymore and it is SERIOUSLY IRRITATING ME every time I open iPhoto. And that's often, as I'm always taking pics of my little one. TIA!!!!! Sara

I am the new user of Lightroom 4, after installing the program I then tried to import (add) pictures from my iPhoto Library to the Lightroom, the iPhoto Library folder did not show on the source column. My iPhoto Library is under the Pictures folder and which is under the User folder on my Apple's hard drive, both User and Pictures phoders did appear on the saurce column except for iPhoto Library. What should I do to allow Lightroom to identidy the iPhoto Library so that I can import the data to start using the ptogram?

  • "PHOTOS FOUND IN THE iPHOTO LIBRARY THAT WERE NOT IMPORTED"

Ever since I imported some videos from a memory stick about 2 weeks ago, my iPhoto opens with the above message and then says that I need to save some photos that were not imported, and then precedes to create an empty folder of 'RECOVERED PHOTOS" with increasing sequential numbers and then stores it on the hard drive.
There is also a little message which pops down from the top when I go to close i-photo and am not sure what it says as it is too quick and I have never had this problem previously and now it is getting annoying!
Has anyone any idea how to make it stop doing this??? The 3 videos that I uploaded in iPhoto originally had to be converted to movies/ quick player however they only appeared as photos in first frame in i-photo and dont appear anywhere in my iMovie catalogue -please help if you can!
    Thank you!

TERENCE DEVLIN - YOU ROCK!! Yes - I did what you suggested step by step and the import folder contained 3 files - Originals, Modified and another one. There were lots of the files with nothing in them and then the videos that I was speaking about repeated about 5 - 6 times in separate folders and different formats - bizarre - or maybe not really if I knew how the import mechanism of the software worked - but thankfully for me - I have your advice and it worked!!
The little message on closing about critical something or other blah, blah, is still there on closing and I don't remember it previously, but maybe it was always there.
All I know is there are no more questions about recovered folders and storing them on my C or whatever drive it is and my little films are intact. I will post another separate message about i-movie recognising these films, which I think they should at a later date.
As a first time brand new mac user (Christmas present Jan 10 - and very proud of it too!) I am amazed at the support available, Genius Bar (although I live in London and it is booked out a week in advance at anytime after office (me) work hours!) I am however also very grateful for the forum as I have never used a forum before and I can see why you deserve your *** rating as Apple support were slightly helpful when I called, but they are so busy and my lovely boyfriend (a long term mac user) told me to get online and ask the techy oracles - so thank you ever so much TD!!

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, restore from backup.

    I am a bit of a computer/Internet/iTunes dummy....
I am concerned about the health of my current computer but have not yet made the commitment to a new one, but:
    1) How can I transfer my iTunes account to a new computer when I get one...
    and
    2) What can I do if my current computer suddenly implodes and I have not yet 'copied/'saved'/otherwise protected my account, as is? -- I have already had my computer crash once and had one of your people help me restore all of the paid for songs (none of the uploaded from my own collection of CD songs, of course, so I had to spend a long time rebuilding that) -- and I believe I was told you could only help me recover that material one or two times altogether, no?
WithOUT purchasing a Mach or iCloud (I actually think I have one of the later, but rarely have checked it) account, is there anything I can do to responsibly protect my account?
Thanks for any time taken on this!!!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Whenever I try to open iPhoto, a message comes up saying that 148 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that have not been imported. It asks me if I want to import them and I say NO but then it places them in a recovered photo folder. I keep deleting the empty recovered photo files but it just keeps asking me every time I go to open iPhoto! I'd love to just get rid of the "found" photos (I can't open them anyway!)
How do I get rid of them so that I can just open iPhoto straight up without this?
    Linda

Open your iPhoto Library package with the Finder.
look for a folder titled Import or Importing and move it to the Desktop. Launch iPhoto to see if the message goes away.  If there is no message  check the contents of the Import folder to see if you want to keep any of those image files (usually they have not been imported into iPhoto). If you want to keep them then drag the folder into the open iPhoto window to import.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.
