Photos for Mac - Important Library Management Question

Hello,
I wanted to make sure that Master files are not imported into the Library database file, as they are already organized in folder on my drive.
So I unchecked "Copy items to the Photo Library".
Now I did a test by importing 66 MB worth of 30 photos to a brand new Photo Library with the above option unchecked. The Photo Library database in the Finder still turned out to be 44 MB!
After opening the folder contents in the Finder I realized that the reason is because it saves the thumbnail version of the files I imported. Even though they are obviously smaller versions of the Master File, and the Master Files are not imported. It's still 2/3 the size of the original files!
So my total photo database is around 100 GB, if I import it all into my photo library and even if it's half the size, that's an extra 50 GB on my hard drive for thumbnails, that's just crazy.
Is there a way to disable thumbnails from being generated at all when using Photos for Mac, or is it inevitable that even with "Copy items to the Photo Library" stays unchecked that the Photos database file is going to have a big file size because of thumbnails?
Thanks,
Nick

This might be an instance for feedback in relation to 'preview' image sizes - if there were some control over size/quality the overhead could be reduced.
Sure, but while that would reduce the storage overhead, it would increase the CPU (& probably memory, both real & virtual) overhead substantially, as well as making the app sluggish when displaying lots of images at once or scrolling through the views.
So I think that once users tried it, they would quickly decide the tradeoffs were not worth it ... & many would complain that Apple should have done something magical to eliminate the drawbacks if that option was to be added to the app.

  • IPhoto had a auto import folder. does this exist in photos for mac?

I used image capture to get the photos from my iPhone, so that iPhoto didn't open every time i plugged in. there was an auto import folder in iPhoto which i could dump my photos in, then when i did open iPhoto it would import everything in that folder. is there a folder that will import everything in that folder whenever Photos for Mac is opened?

What does iPhoto do with photos as they are imported?
What you tried was a very complicated and unsupported way to import from one iPhoto library to another.
The safest way would have been either
to use iPhoto Library Manager to export a new library from the old one
or to export the original files using iPhoto and to import the exported files.
But pasting the Masters folder into a temporary "Importing" folder put your photos at risk. The Importing folder is a temporary cache that will be emptied, when an Import has finished.
It started to get very slow and sluggish, so I decided I would move the photos to a new library on the same drive.
It would have probably sufficed to repair or to rebuild the library and safe all your edits and albums, instead of migrating the photos to a new library.
Since you do not have a backup, and your Masters folder got erased, I recommend to stop using the drive with your library immediately and to try data recovery software, for example Disk Drill. It has a free trial mode.

  • Photos for Mac stuck importing photos from iPhone

I recently upgraded to Photos for Mac from Aperture. Upgrading the library went fairly smoothly. On my first attempt to import photos from my iPhone 6, Photos is now stuck in the import process.
The import tab (device selected) shows the following:
    Already imported (2,509 items)
    New items (442 items)
No thumbnail images are visible (just the default grey squares indicating items)
At the top of this screen is an import progress bar that has not shown any progress. This progress indicator says "Importing 442 items" but the bar itself remains grey; I'm assuming there would be either a black or colored indicator showing some progress when the import process is working correctly.
After about an hour with no indication of progress, I selected the "Stop Import" option, with no noticeable results. I tried clicking the Stop Import button several more times, still with no results. Let things be for about five minutes, with no change in status. The import still seems stuck; clicking the stop button does nothing.
Next, I quit the Photos application. An error sheet appears: "Do you want to continue importing? Photos is currently importing files. If you quit the import task will be canceled." I select "Quit".
Now Photos gets stuck closing the library. All app windows close except for a tiny square that says: "Closing the library..." The library does not close and I run out of patience waiting for it to do so and force quit the application.
    I am using a 27-inch late-2009 iMac
    8GB memory
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i5
    177GB storage space available
    Photos 1.0
    Photo library is approx. 107GB

Update: Force Quitting and restarting the app apparently solved whatever was preventing importation of photos from the iPhone.

  • Importing raw into photos for mac

trying to get to grips with photos now aperture scrapped

<<There doesn't seem to be any facility for this>>
This is basically correct.  You can import RAW files to photos, but the standard RAW filter will be applied and you can only edit the image with the included, simple-minded Photos editor.  You can chose in the editor whether to use the JPG or RAW file as the master, but it's unclear which file is exported or shared when you try to send it somewhere else.  Sometimes it works but other times the exported image looks like the original unedited JPG.  I've sort of abandoned shooting in RAW for the moment unless I'm in a situation where I know I will need to do RAW editing in Photoshop.  At minimum there seems to point in importing the RAW file into Photos as it just makes the library bigger without any appreciable benefit, so if I do shoot in JPG/RAW, I just import the JPG files to Photos and edit the RAW files with Photoshop from the Finder folders.
You can make suggestions to Apple for product enhancements at the Photos for Mac suspport site.  We'll see if Apple listens to the users or continues to try to support only the lowest common denominator casual photographers.

  • Problem importing videos using Photos for Mac

I just install photos for mac, everything seems ok since I moved iphoto library to new photos library.
But there is one problem, I can not import videos from my iphone, every new photo was imported but not a single video.
The application said the format file is unrecognizable file type.
I am using macbook air with Mac OS X Yosemite ver 10.10.3 also iphone 4s and iphone 5, each idevice using latest ios.
    Thank you in advance

iPhoto did not support video syncing over iCloud. The new Photos app does. If you synced, or transferred your videos to iTunes, they should have migrated yo Photos. Enable Sidebar in the View menu, then check the Videos special Album.
Your old iPhoto app and iPhoto Library remain on your drive and work as before. The iZphotolsb is in your Applications folder.

  • From Photos for Mac, how does one delete imported iphone photo?

IPhoto had this feature where when after it has imported all of my iPhone photos, it would ask me if I want to delete the imported photos from my iPhone.  Also, it has a button to delete all photos from my iPhone if I choose to.  Does anyone know if this very nice feature is still available in the new Photos for Mac?
I really like this feature to clear all of my photos with one click, instead of having go thru one by one.

  • How to delete iPhone camera roll's photos in new version Photos for Mac

    Hi,
Before upgrade to new version Photos for Mac. I was using iPhoto + Photo Stream to manage all the photos took from my iPhone.
Photo Stream will upload all new photos to iPhoto; when I connect iPhone to my mac, I can use iPhoto to delete my iPhone's camera roll's photos to clear the storage space.
After I upgraded to Photos; the Photo Stream still running well, all new photos also upload to Photos' library, however, when I connect iPhone to my mac.
Photos doesn't offer me any method to delete my iPhone camera roll's photos.
What I can find is "Import Selected" or "Import All" and "Delete items after import" these functions are doesn't help.
Because, all the photos are already imported by Photo Stream, when I click "Import All", all the imported photos will "RE-IMPORT" again and the photos will duplicate in my library.
This is also a BUGS in Photos because in old version iPhoto when I import a photo which has already imported before, the software will pop-up a Dialogue Box to ask me options to choose between "Skip" or "Overwrite" or "Duplicate".
Do anyone know how to delete the iPhone camera roll's photos by using new version Photos?
    Thank you very much.

  • Why is the item count in Photos for Mac significantly higher after upgrading from iPhoto?

Since upgrading to Photos for Mac from iPhoto, I've noticed the number of photos and videos in my library is higher than what I had before. Granted I imported some photos into the new app since then but taking that into account there's still a big discrepancy.
In iPhoto 9.6.1, the item count is 13,394 and I have since imported 95 new items into Photos for Mac. The total then should be 13,489 but Photos for Mac lists the item count at 13,626. That's a difference of 137 items.
Even taking into consideration that Photos for Mac might be including the 32 photos and videos that were in iPhoto's Trash (now Recently Deleted) folder, it still wouldn't account for 105 mystery items.
Does anyone have any insight into this difference in the number of items?

  • Photos for mac problems

I can't believe there's no similar questions on here...! Well, after 'upgrading' I've run into problems/glitches and annoyances. Loading photos from my memory card works fine, and I mostly like the upgrade. But my Macbook pro retina- new three months ago with 1tb of storage and 16gb RAM struggles with resolving the photos, taking a few seconds to focus each photo. This was instantaneous with iPhoto. And when editing, it takes even longer to focus, sometimes needing to return to the main photos stream before clicking back in on the single photo to fix it. And instead of running at around 40 degrees, using iPhoto from three days ago, my computer now runs at 75-80 degrees whenever I'm using the Photos app. This is in normal parameters, so I've been told, but why the enormous difference?
Albums. There's a lead photo for each album but now there's nothing else, no clue to the photos contained within when you drag the cursor across. This is crazy and pointless.  Especially so with iPhoto events. Nothing.
And a major glitch. If you bring up a photo orientated for portrait and pinch/zoom in, there's a lurch to the right that doesn't happen in landscape. This makes it impossible to zoom in on a certain point until you're half-way zoomed in. Not good.
Final point out. In edit, there's a weird choice, where you have to 'add' the sharpening button, definition button etc. This would be OK except it resets for each photo. this is insane. There's no need to have some of these buttons hidden like this.
There needs to be a way for us to customise Photos for mac. We can't flag a photo any more but have to use a childish 'heart'. We're not all fourteen years old. The white background is distracting. Let us customise it. And there's no drag and drop into Lightroom and some other apps too any more. Crazy, crazy, crazy. Anyone have a work around? Maybe updates will fix some of these. I hope so. But Apples' tendency to remove choice and customisability is very worrying.

Second, I spent months organizing curating my iPhoto library, which consists of 35,000 photos, into various events.  The new Photos app has completely obliterated that hard work by removing "events" from the organization and then by jumbling photos into what seems to be, at times, a random ordering.  Is there any way to resurrect my events and the prior chronology I had established for my photos?  I am absolutely fuming at what occurred.
Use the feedback form to let the developer team know:  Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback
This apparent mess is intentional. Photos organization of the library is automatic. It will structure the library by Moments - grouping the photos by location and date.
The only organization you can add are albums and smart albums based on keywords, etc.
However, your events should have been migrated. You should be seeing a folder "iPhoto Events", with albums for each event. Is this folder missing?

  • Arrangement of photos in Photos for Mac

Downloading my library to the new Photos for Mac resulted in the oldest photos (by date) coming out at the top and the newest at the bottom. In iPhoto it was possible, using "View>Sort Events" to organise the library by date order. Does anyone know please how to re-organise the library in Photos for Mac so that the newest photos come up at the top?

I also have a problem which I just noticed with iTunes 12.1.0.50 which I took a screen snapshot of and if I could get an email address and a reference # to track it, the problem is immediately apparent. Its not urgent so if you could send me an email back:
I am listing my songs by Album by Artist and in between
    * one album (August & Everything After) by one artist (Counting Crows) and
    * another album (Recovering The Satellites) by the same artist (Counting Crows),
I find a track from an entirely different album (Coral Fang) by another entirely different artist (The Distillers).
    What's going on?

  • Using an external editor (e.g., photoshop) with photos for mac

    Hi,
I'm just trying out photos for mac. So far it seems to make life a lot easier in terms of syncing libraries. However, I have been using Lightroom 4 and photoshop before and I am missing out on some of their combined functionality (not much I have to confess). What I want to know is this - is there an easy way to open files with an external editor e.g., photoshop so I can use it (photoshop) to stitch together panoramas or merge HDRs?
I'm surprised this functionality isn't included in photos from the beginning. I can see there is talk of plugins but can't find ANY online at the moment.
    Thanks.

    Mr Ben,
I am having similar difficulty finding programs that offer 'extensions' within the Photos App.
I think that gone are the days when we could perform an 'Edit with...'
My understanding is that Apple has only opened 'Extensions for Photos editing' for IOS.  It hasn't yet made it available as an option for OS X.
I hope this changes, as many serious photographers migrating from Aperture and now using Photos on OS X will want to perform additional edits with third party software without having to export and then re-import images - as seems to be the only solution at the moment.
Hopefully, behind the scenes there is a mad flurry of activity by App producers to create extensions for OS X that will eventually be switched on by Apple.
I would love to know. Can anyone from Apple please advise?

  • Empty Event Folders on OS Devices after upgrade to Photos for Mac

I recently upgraded to Photos for Mac and did the same on my iPhone and iPad. Even though some my iPhoto Events have synced, most have not. What is the reason for this error? Also, How can I add pictures from the Photos for Mac application to my OS Devices?

Events and Albums are not the same thing in iPhoto. Iphoto Events are converted to Albums when you migrate to the new app. Using iCloud library is probably the best way to access these on your iOS devices.
