Photos for OS X:  Displaying & Sorting Photos by NAME

In the new photos app, it doesn't appear that you can:
1) Display the name of the photos;
2) Batch change file names;
3) Sort images by file name (instead of date).
Is this true?
Is there a work around?
(Apple, if this functionality isn't present, please include in a future update.)

1. You can, but need to mouseover the image to see the title
2. True
3. True, but be aware that filename and 'name of the photo' are not the same thing

  • How do I sort photos by name after newest update?

I downloaded the newest iTunes update last week and now al my photos on my iPad are in chronological order. I prefer my photos in name order because I have specific order I want to view them in. Is there anyway to fix this? It's so frustrating!

I think that this is an issue for a lot of people.  This is the third thread I have seen on this topic today. It appears that the latest update to iTunes "Broke" this option and we are stuck with chronologicl order rather then alpha order.
This is why I bought Photo Manager Pro.  Well worth the couple of bucks I spent on it.  It allows you to create folders, import pictures into the folders and then sort them however you want to and they seem to stay sorted that way even when iTunes or iOS changes.
You might submit a feedback report, http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html to let the software engineers know that this has become a problem for you.

  • Cannot sort photos by name

I just upgraded to OS X 10.10.3 with the new Photos app. It seems that Apple left out the ability to sort photos by name. I have thousands of scanned photos -- some going back to the 1800s -- so sorting by date (which essentially is the scan date) does not make any sense. Using iPhoto, I named the photos with the date in yyyy-mm-dd format and sorted on name to get the photos in the proper sequence. On some of the photos, I could only determine the year, so that's all that was used in the naming. Sorting should be available on a variety for fields in the photos -- both ascending and descending.

It's easier to use 3rd party apps like Photo Manager Pro. You can drag the photos around like the way you do with apps.

You edit the name in the Corkboard view.

  • Sort photos by name

Not sure what I'm missing here.
Basically I had a project full of photos imported from a camera, and also some others added from photostream from my iPhone.
I have now added the photostream in iyts entirity, thinking I would be able to order the photos by name and go through and remove duplicates from the project.
By default, Aperture has added the recently added photos from photostream after all the photos that were already there.
I thought to reorder I just had to Right Click the project name, then select Keep Arranged By > Name.
    Bu this isn't doing anything.
I've tried selecting all the photos I want to sort, then trying.
I've tried creating an Album in the Project, but still no joy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

The Keep arranged by that you get when you right click a project actually has to do with how folders and albums in that project are arranged when you look at them in the Library tab of the inspector. It doe not apply to the images in the project.
To sort the images in the project open a browser on the project and use the  sort pulldown.

  • IOS 7   iTunes 11.1.4 sort photos by name, not date

    Hy, I'm running iOS 7.0.4 & iTunes 11.1.4.
I have a bunch of pics in folders that are incrementally named (001, 002 etc).
But when exporting them to my ipod touch, they are listed automatically by the date added.
How can I sort them by NAME and not by DATE on my ipod touch?

  • Contacts Display and Sort by Company Name

I have over 1000 contacts in Outlook which synced wonderfully with my new iPhone.
Alas, I need to lookup and sort by Company Name. This is a VERY standard method for contacts. The options presented by iphone are first and last name, sigh and tech support had no suggestions and the helpful tech support genttleman could find no 3rd party applications which could help.
    Help!
I relly like my iPhone, but I need to be able to look up contacts and notes by company.
    Thanks

I have noticed something useful when entering contacts directly into my iPhone. When entering a contact that I want shown in the list by the company name, I enter the company name first (without entering the "first name" and "last name") and save it. If you do it that way, the little square where the photo would be will change from the blank head to some buildings, and the contact will be listed by the company name. You can then go back and edit to add a first and last name and it will stay listed by company name.
However, if you enter the last name, first name, and company name all at the same time it will list the entry by the "last name" instead of by the company.
For example, if I want my son's doctor's office to display as "Arizona Pediatrics" instead of "Dr. John Smith" in the contact list, I would enter the Arizona Pediatrics first, save, and then go back in and add the Dr. John Smith in the last name, first name fields.
I need to check the manual to see if this is detailed, as I stumbled on it accidentaly, but it's pretty useful.

  • How do I change a photo file name, e.g. DSC001, etc.?

When I either import or download digital images into IPhoto, I need to change the filename in some instances.  Using the Information feature in IPhoto, I give the photo a name or identifier and add other information.  However, when I then burn the photo to a CD, the original filename, e.g. DSC001, etc. shows up.  How can I change it?

    Aaron Marquez wrote:
    This isn't true.
Select the photo, then Press Command + I or go to View > Info and double click the photo filename to rename it.
    Best,
    Aaron
That does NOT change the file name and does not help (Unless you use the option to use the title for the file name during export) - You can not change the file name while the photo is in iPhoto (unless you do so using the finder awhick will corrupt your library and cause data loss)

  • Photo file names Deleted by iPad

Asked this 3 months ago, but got no response. Can't understand what iPad does to photo file names. 1. Can't see photo file name in albums/events. 2. when iPad emails photo, the file that is received is called only La Foto (the photo, my wife uses spanish). If I send her a photo with a name I assigned (date, camera-assigned number, file size), and she saves it to an album and sends it back, the file name I sent her is gone, and photo is simply La Foto. How can you organize or keep track of photos, w/o info such as name, date, camera number, etc.? And why does iPad remove specifically created names? Nothing in Manual or Settings on this.
We've an iPad, and also a MB Air and iMac.

Thanks for your time doing the check.
I'm sorry that currently I don't have the similiar resource to do the same.
I guess that it might be the difference caused by different iOS / idevice.
I think that I'll check and modify the app after I got iOS 6 devices.
Thanks for your comments and your time.
Thanks for your reply, and I hope you get a more recent device soon for Father's/Mother's Day or whatever!  I'm a little confused as to what the situation is.  According to w'pedia the iOS 5 that you have does have photostream, but I don't know if it supports multiple streams (which you create by touching the + when in photostream).  Is the problem that your version does not support multiple streams so you can't test the issue I raised, or is it that it does support multiple streams and works correctly with iOS 5 but not with iOS 6?
PS: I've checked, and find my iPod has the same limitation as I mentioned above with the iPad.

Try the fix for yourself.  It's harmless. Just follow TD's directions explicitly.

  • Contacts Synching vs Display/ Sorting

I recently added a new contact to my Outlook Contacts list, but after synching the iPhone, could not find that new contact in my iPhone Contacts list.
After checking the usual support pages and this forum, I could not resolve the issue and contacted a very helpful tech in Apple Support by phone. After trying all the usual methods like re-synching, verifying that the iPhone was indeed syching from it to Outlook, and Outlook back to the iPhone Contacts list, we discovered that the problem was not one of a synching glitch, but of how contacts are displayed in Outlook versus how they are displayed in iPhone contacts.
Here is the problem. In Outlook, new entries are made on the single line for names. But you also have the choice to display that entry in a last name first sort order. When you do, and open up the entry from the Outlook list of displayed last names first, you see the record as you originally entered it, first name first, with the "display as" field sorted to your preference. Among other things, this Outlook feature allows me to use Outlook to chose to sort and display on the sort list individual names by last name first, but enterprise listings by first name first, or by a key word first (for example: I might chose to list an entry for "Verysmall Bank" as displayed on the list of contacts as I will most likely remember it, "Verysmall Bank", rather than as "Bank, Verysmall" but might chose to list my lending officer by last name first "Miserly, Ian."
When the Outlook list synchs with the iPhone, it does not use the Outlook "display as" field for the name information, but rather, the Name field, which will normally be displayed as first name first, etc. Then, you can chose how to sort and display those names, in the iPhone, using the settings tools under Phone as either as sort order with last, first or first, last and have the same two choices for the display order. But you cannot pick and chose. All entries will be sorted by one way or the other. So, if you want to sort enterprise names by first name and individuals by last name, you're out of luck in the iPhone contacts list. Worse, if you want to display a contact by last name, not only does it appear in the list, but also in the info panel that way (e.g. the list would show: Miserly Ian and in the info panel, the name would also be displayed as Miserly Ian). Then, to sort by last name, you would end up finding Mr. Miserly under the "I" section rather than the "M" section.
None of this is a big deal with a small set of contacts, but with a huge one, it can be infuriating to have to hunt around for a name and the proper way the name should be show in the info panel. And it may be that if you just added a new contact to your Outlook list and think you have a synching issue with the iPhone because you can't find it, you may only have a display/sort anomally.
Let's hope, and I would suggest to Apple, that Apple takes care of this issue in the June update. I know that enterprises will want to have their contacts sorted in a more flexible way rather than, as now, from an "individual-centric" viewpoint. I would think it should be fairly simple to allow sorting from the Outlook "display as" field and leave capturing the full info on a contact from the "v-card" as set up in Outlook.

Thanks for posting this. This issue has been driving me crazy as well, so I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I believe this problem affects not only new contacts added on the iPhone, but also any pre-existing contacts that are edited on the phone. As a result, I just changed my display setting on the iPhone to "First Last," even though I found "Last, First" much easier to scroll through, because I was so sick of having iPhone alter Outlook's display setting for some of my contacts.
I also hope this is an issue Apple is working on. And while they're at it (ok, this is an admittedly minor request), I would love to have different display settings for the Contacts list and the caller ID. When I'm looking for a phone number, I want to see the list alphabetized by last name, but when I'm receiving a call I'd like to see the first name first so that's the thing on the tip of my tongue when I answer the phone.

  • Adding link to the photo and Name in the outlook contact card -Enterprise wide

How can I make the name and photo in the outlook contact card link to my profile page? I read articles where it is mentoined that the URL is set in Registry, currently my organization does not have any link associated with photo and name in contact card.
I want to implement this across the organization , any deployment or changes that I need to do to implement this across?
Appreciate if you can provide details on how this is done. The url will look like this:
    https://www.produrl.com/userid={userid}
How can I dynamically add respective userid in the link?Appreciate your response on this.

So you want to redesign the contact card in Outlook? Are you using SharePoint? If signed into sharepoint via the social connect, there is a link to the mysharepoint page under View source. I don't think you can change the link or customize the card,
    beyond what is listed here:
