Photos from aperture into FCPX

I'm trying to use the media window built into FCPX to take photos from my aperture library into FCPX.
Not working.
All I can muster up through the media window in FCPX is 29 rather random images, most from my iPhone. I've got thousands of pictures that aren't being recognized.
For example: Ruidoso April 2014 is a project I have 429 pictures in. Only one will show in the FCPX browser. I can see projects, photos, faces, ...facebook...projects, etc. I can see the basic structure of aperture and options that make sense, but only 29 total photos are showing.
Odd thing, while composing this message, FCPX crashed for some odd reason. When I reopened it, the project I'm working on "Ruidoso April 2014" now has 13 still images in the libraries frame on the top left from my icloud photostream.
so I guess I have two questions:
#1 - how can I get photos from Aperture into FCPX using the media browser (or is this not a good option?)?
#2 - any idea why images from photostream popped randomly into the event I'm working on?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
-Robert

  • How do you import iPhone video from Aperture into FCPX?

I need to import some iPhone 4 video files from Aperture into FCPX. For some reason there seems to be no way to do this. Please do not suggest I import the videos directly from my iPhone. #1 the videos are already off my phone and #2 I have no desire to import all my iPhone videos separately into FCPX when I am already importing them into Aperture along with my photos.

You have to drag them from their location, (finder or iPhoto etc) into one of the events in the event list of FCP X.

  • When I export photos from Aperture, the pixel dimensions are halved thus losing data.  I have set the export preferences to export at original size, to no avail.  This happens even if I just drag to the desktop and then back, or if I export into my iphoto

When I export photos from Aperture to desktop or iphoto I lose pixels.  The pixel dimensions are halved, despite setting the export preference to export at original size.  Anyone know why or how to correct this?

Dragging an Image from Aperture exports the Preview.  Preview parameters are set on the Previews tab of Aperture preferences.
Are you seeing the same results when you export using one of the export commands?
Is so, confirm that the settings in the selected Image Export Preset ("Aperture➞Presets➞Image Export") truly represent those in the Image Export Preset's name.

  • Import .mov from aperture to FCPX

    Hi,
I'm currently using Aperture & Final Cut Pro X (latest versions)
I am storing all movies (.mov h264) Full HD within Aperture. They are stored in various events and files are managed by aperture and stored within the aperture library.
My question is: What is the best way to work with these aperture movie files within Final Cut Pro and how do I best import them into FCPX.
In the past I have exported from Aperture into a folder on the HDD and then imported via FCP to work with the files. I've always used the original media import option within FCPX.
I've notice I can also drag from aperture direct into FCPX and also import via the media browser. How does that compare to what I have been doing.
What's the best option to get work with these files inot FCPX and what's the best import options.
Also, I'm still confussed (no matter how much I read) about original and proxy media. I think I should stick with original as proxy seems to decrease image quality when exporting (in mp4 or mov format HD).
If I do use the media browser or used a referenced file. Should I copy the file to FCP folder or keep where it is. If I keep where it is does it alter the original file when I make changes within FCPX.
Sorry for the questions, they are confussing reading it back. I've tried to search and read a lot about it but not really getting what I need out of it.
Basically - whats the best way to edit .mov file located in Aperture while in FCPX. Do I need to import, copy to FCPX folder and what settings do I use.

I'm in the same boat, just beginning to work with Final Cut Pro X with many movie files in Aperture.
With some movie files, it works fine to merely drag from the FCPX Photos browser into an event. But for some older movie files, FCPX says there's no movie file there. (All of these play fine in Aperture.) I think this is because the files are referenced movies and FCPX needs self-contained movies.
Here are two ways to deal with this, in my experience:
    This is the simplest:
    1. Select the file in Aperture and choose File > Export Original.
    2. Import into FCPX
(You can't use the Edit in External Editor command, and there's no option to export a movie directly to FCPX, but you might be able to automate this process with Keyboard Maestro or Automator.)
    Another method:
    1. Drag the movie from Aperture to the Desktop.
    2. Open the movie in QuickTime Player 7 Pro. (QuickTime Player X won't work.)
    3. Save As Self-contained movie.
    4. Import to FCPX.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3380Z/A/quicktime-7-pro-for-mac-os-x
    File size example:
In Aperture, the file is listed as 11 MB.
After dragging to the desktop, the file is 4K. After exporting original from Aperture, the file is 11MB.
QuickTime Player X shows the dragged file as 4K and shows only a black screen, though it acts as if the movie is playing.
FCPX also shows the dragged file as 4K.
QuickTime Player 7 Pro very briefly puts up a dialog "Searching for movie data in file "DSCN1234.MOV" then opens the file fine. (I don't know if this will work with the basic QTP 7 without the Pro registration.)
After saving as self-contained movie, the file size is 11 MB.
It's odd that Aperture can handle these files and FCPX can't. I've posted an enhancement request to Apple.

Ok, so I;ve noticed that when I import using the media browser (photo icon) - Inititally these files are refrenced back to apeture libary, however once transcoded it puts it onto PRORES format and puts a file that's about 1000% bigger (120mb original for 1min file to 1gb) I'm left with a "optimised" media folder with the 1gb file and original media folder with the 120mb file.

  • Ipad won't sync with photos from Aperture - library cannot be found

Ok I give up. When trying to sync my photos onto my new ipad from Aperture in iTunes I keep getting the message "iTunes cannot sync photos to the ipad because your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications. Well the library is where it should be in the Home folder and then pictures. I have the latest version of iTunes and Aperture. The only similar setting I can find in Aperture preferences is under Previews and Share Previews with ilife and iwork, no mention of itunes?
I've gone into my Aperture show contents and deleted the cache folder ipod photo cache (I previously synced to my iphone 3GS). It works syncing to iphoto, as I have tested it and the iphoto is in the same folder as the Aperture library so they are in the right location.
I am now at a loss as to what to try next......PLEASE HELP ME....
I don't want to have to have a Aperture library and an iphoto library on the go!

    Hi,
iTunes cannot sync photos to the ipad because your Aperture Library could not be found.
If you have an external drive connected to your Mac, disconnect that, restart your Mac, restart your iPad and try syncing photos from Aperture.

  • After upgrade to IOS8 can't import photos from Aperture

I upgraded to IOS8, reset my iPad to factory settings and reinstalled all my apps from scratch.
When go into iTunes and I select to import photos from Aperture on my Mac it hangs.
I have an old iPhoto library on my Mac and if I select photos from that it works.
I have switched off everything to do with iCloud after seeing some posts that this might be causing the problem, but not a solution for me.
(I have over 28,000 photos in my Aperture library).

Did you turn on iCloud Photo Library? I suspect it may remove the ability to sync photos and videos between Macs and iOS devices.

  • Does anyone know how to take photos from IPHOTO into Lightroom?

does anyone know how to take photos from IPHOTO into Lightroom?

Because Apple has dropped "Aperture" and is switching users away from "iPhoto" to a new photo application called "Photo" so that they are more fully integrated with the Yosemite 10 and the iOS 8.3 going forward there are some instructions how to import photos into Lightroom without losing to much metadata or other information. Go under Lightroom help and follow he instructions.

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

I think I just figured this out.
Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.

  • How do I get images from Aperture into print shop for mac?

    Friends,
I have Print Shop for Mac and Aperture. How do I get images from Aperture into Print Shop? I'musing managed images with previews. Is there any option besides exporting to the desktop and importing?
    Thanks!
    Steve

if you have previews turned on in Aperture and they're all genereated, you can simply drag-n-drop them into any application (just about). drag-n-drop is essentially the same as copy/paste as long as the application is setup to accept "drops" onto its windows.
otherwise, if you're running Leopard (10.5) as your version of Mac OS X, when you import (or whatever it is in PrintShop), you should get a file selection dialog. from here, scroll down the left-hand side bar set of icons. near the bottom is a group called "Media". click on the triangle to open the group, choose Photos, and from here you should see an Aperture icon. click this and you'll see your whole library (or at least the portion of it that you have previews generated for. select the photo you want and viola!

  • Sync photos from Aperture

I would like to sync some photos/albums with my iPhone using Aperture. I went through the following steps:
    1. Imported images from iPhone to a project in Aperture
    2. Created an empty album in Aperture
    3. Dragged and dropped images from the project (from import) to the album
    4. In iTunes I went to the "Photos" tab of my connected iPhone
    5. Selected Sync Photos from Aperture
    6. Clicked on the "Selected Albums" radio button
    7. A bunch of albums/smart albums/projects are listed in the window, including the album I created in step 2 above
    8. I select the album (from step 2 above) but it says there are 0 images in it. When I look in Aperture the images are definitely showing in the album
How do I get iTunes to recognize that the album I create has images, and thus move the album over to the iPhone?

I believe I have it figured out. In the Aperture preferences, under the "Previews" tab, is a checkbox labeled "New projects automatically generate preview." This needs to be checked in order to sync images from Aperture albums to your iPhone.
Otherwise, if that box wasn't checked when you created a new project, when you create an album in Aperture and put images in it, iTunes won't recognize that there are images in there.
Note that if you are importing a lot of photos into Aperture, make sure you give Aperture time to generate previews for all of the images before you go back to iTunes to view that album for syncing. All of the previews have to be generated before iTunes will recognize that the album/project has any images.

  • Changing Sync photos from: Aperture to iPhoto on iTunes

I marked my previous question as solved by mistake.
I still have a problem in iTunes to sync my photos to my iPhone 6. It shows only available "Copy photos from: Aperture".
I would like to switch this back iPhoto and cannot find the way.
    Thank you.

Well, that was an interesting idea, Colin, but it didn't work. I opened iTunes, and then dragged the Aperture repository into it. It seemed to acknowledge it (when I dragged it onto iTunes, the "dragging" icon wasn't x'ed out), but it didn't add anything to the library.
If you try to do an "Add to Library" from iTunes, and then navigate to the Aperture repository, the repository folder is grayed out. It can't be selected. Same for a backup Vault created from Aperture.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. It's always worth experimenting. (Assuming everything is backed up. )

  • What's the best way to export Photos from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
    so heres the deal:
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
So to get his photos i thaught i could just copy his aperture library onto my external hd.
but will i be able to import the photos into iphoto? and i'd like to not have the originals but the edited photos.
or will i have to export the photos from aperture (e.g. with my brothers, faster mac...)

Paul, do your father and you have compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture?  Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3 or later?
Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
With the new, unified library architecture you can simply open an Aperture library in iPhoto - no need to import anything.
If the Aperture library is not compatible, from an older Aperture version, you can try to export the versions on your brother's mac (file > Export > Versions).
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
That is not normal, however old the mac is.
Either his hard drive is too full and needs freeing disk space, or he has imported corrupted images, or his Aperture library needs repairing or rebuilding.  He should try to repair his library, if he has used "force quit" on Aperture.  See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Cannot sync photos from Aperture using iTunes

Yesterday I took 16 photos using a Canon 5D Mark III and uploaded them into Aperture and created a new project to hold them. The I wanted to transfer them into my iPhone so I went to iTunes, connected the iPhone via USB cable and in the left hand side bar under Photos I clicked "Sync Photos", selected "Chose photos from Aperture" and "Events from the last 3 months" and in the events list that appears below, the new project appears checked. The I clicked on Sync and left the iPhone and the MBP connected overnight and it stayed in Step 7 of 7 Importing Photos....
Any ideas on why I have not been able to import that project from Aperture into the iPhone using iTunes?

Make sure everything is installed and up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Updating iPod's Software
Also, try syncing from a different folder with photos. See if that one works.
Finally, see if this works/applies/gets you anywhere...

  • Cannot import photos from aperture

Up until yesterday I've had no problems importing photos from Aperture (3.1.3) during the iPhone (4.3.5) sync process. Now iTunes (10.4.1) presents me with a dialogue window containing the following message: "The iPhone "xxx" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found." The photo files are there in Aperture. If I uncheck all of the detail boxes, but leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box checked the sync process completes successfully, but no photos were copied to the iPhone because none were selected. I've rebooted the iMac, etc. And, of course, if I leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box unchecked the sync process completes successfully.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    George

I thought my core issue was that my single library has this iPhoto icon associated with it.  I'd prefer it to be considered as an Aperture library.
Are you looking at the correct libary in the Finder? That icon is puzzling.
What are the versions of iPhoto and Aperture that you are using?
If you have upgraded your photolibrary by the latest versions of Aperture (Aperture 3.4.5) and iPhoto (iPhoto 9.4.3) the icon should be the same for both iPhoto libraries and Aperzure libraries. If you are not yet using the latest version, consider to upgrade, because you are missing out on some bug fixes.
The "Kind" displayed in the Finder will depend on the filename extension. A library created by iPhoto should have the extension "photolibrary" and the Aperture libraries "aplibrary".
Check also the settings in Image Capture:
In Image Capture you can set the application to open for each device individually. It might be possible, that you have set a diffrent application to open in Image Capture: I have set all my devices to "No Application" in "Image Capture". This way I can decide, if I want to open iTunes or Aperture, when I connect my iPad or iPod.
If you are really troubled by the "Kind = Photo Library" you can convert that by importing the iPhoto Library into a new, empty Aperture Library. Then Aperture will set up the internal database files with the "Kind = Aperture Library".
    Regards
    Léonie
