Photos imported, folders disappeared

I'm using LR3.2 and imported pictures into LR catalog and copied the pictures into my external HD.
I've done this exactly the same way for every import I've completed in LR.
The imported folder shows up on the folders panel in the Library module, everything is absolutely fine.
Upon exiting LR and restarting it, the folders are gone, they do not show up at all as a folder in the folders panel.
The strange thing is that under "All Photographs", the pics are all there. When I look for my files in OSX Finder, they are there as well, in the physical folders which LR copied them to. Same thing happened for every shoot I've imported since then, the folders show up in the panel on first import, then disappear upon restarting LR.
I really don't understand what's going on, I've done this exactly the same way I've imported pictures from day one.
I'd be very appreciative if someone could help.
Thanks everyone.
Christopher.

Hi,
I'm experiencing the same issue - just started happening recently (after latest update?) - I import my photos as normal to an internal hdd. Evertything appears fine and they show in the library in my usual import folder (sudivided by date as per setup). I do some processing, call it a day, exit and when I start up next the folders are no longer listed in the library!?
The files are still somewhere in the catalog as I can find them using the previous import shortcut or by looking down from the parent folder (containing all 2010 images) but the folder created during the import is gone! Checking in explorer (Win 7) I can confirm that the folders are still in place it's just Lightroom 3 which seems to have misplaced them....
This is really annoying and synchronising the parent folder doesn't help as it considers the pictures to still be there. Bizzarely if I try and create a replacment folder I get a "the name X is already taken, please choose a different name" so lightroom seems to think it's there but won't display it!
Doesn't appear to be an incorrect catalog issue as I've checked the correct one is loading on startup.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

  • I imported 100 photos, when I was reading photos iphoto crushed, and when I restarted iphoto all photos imported had disappeared! Is there a way to find them. They were imported, they can not have disappeared from the hard disk?

I imported 100 photos from my camera (Canon) into iphoto. The importation went well, and when I was watching the photos, suddenly iphoto crashed. I restarted iphoto and realized that the photos had disapered. The events are availbble into iphoto but they are empty, the photos have dispeared. I can not believe they disapeared as they have been imported and read once, they must be hidden somewhere on the disk? Is there a way to find where they are?

Assuning you're running iPhoto 9 or later try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • IPad and iPhone photos/folders disappear in Aperture 3

    Hello all,
As my subject line states I'm having problems with my photos/videos and their folders disappearing in Aperture 3. I can import them without problem via Aperture's built in import feature. I created a folder called iPhone and one called iPad and then import into the appropriate folders.
My problem occurs when I close Aperture. When I reopen my folders and all the projects/photos are gone. This has happened to me to numerous times. It does not occur with the other folders/projects that I have in my library.
I am using the latest aperture update and OSX 10.6.8. All of my IOS are up to date as well and not jail broken. With regards to the photos/videos on my ipad they are mostly ones transferred to my ipad via the camera connection kit.
Thanks for any help or insight you can give.

These are user-to-user forums, so I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post (posting it on public forums can lead to spam).
Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad.  Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing.
In terms of editing them, on iOS 6 I get an Edit button at the top left of the screen which gives me some edit options at the bottom of the screen : rotate, enhance, red-eye, crop. The edited version will then be saved to the Camera Roll album, the original photo is left untouched.  There are also third-party photo editing apps e.g. Photoshop Express (which is free with some in-app options) - they will also save the edited version to the Camera Roll album, the original photo will be left unaltered.

  • Folders disappear once imported?

When I am importing new images from my HDrive (where I want the masters) I choose ADD. Once imported, the folders all look great...the main folder is there ie GUJARAT and the subfolders are there too ie Gujarat 1, Gujarat 2 etc. When I close LR, and reopen, the folders have disappeared and do not show up under my HD on the left hand side. However, the photos are there in the main top folder which is my HD. When i locate the photo it does not say it is missing, however, the folder GUJARAT and the subfolders are not to be seen. WHY??? Should I be choosing COPY instead of ADD? or creating a new catalogue? I imported thousands before in this way and never had a problem. Now, my folders and subfolders are not showing up, although the photos are still there......whats going on??? HELP!

No, they don't appear. The total number of photos in the external hard drive (called Little Russian) indicates that the photos are there, have been imported, but they do not show up in the designated folders. I also went to Varanasi and Kerala on that trip, and downloaded the folders fine...they show up with all the subfolders. When I was travelling, I would download my memory cards onto my laptop desktop, then put them on a Lacie Rugged portable hard drive. Then I imported them into LR. I backed them up on another portable Rugged HD. Once at home, I moved those files to the desktop external hard drive called Little Russian. When I opened LR, the photos said they were missing, so I redirected them to Little Russian hard drive and all was fine. This worked well with the Varanasi and the Kerala photos. However, when I went to do the same with the Mumbai, Goa and Gujarat files, they all seemed to import, but the folders would not show up on the left hand side under Little Russian in LR, even though the photos are there, and the count of photos is indicated and correct in the main folder called Little Russian.  Here is what it looks like: Little Russian 13,985  - INDIA 2012       - Kerala 2212              - kerala 1              -kerala 2 etc       -Varanasi 3822               - varanasi 1               - varanasi 2 etc
Under INDIA 2012 I imported Mumbai and Goa but they don't show up( but the photos are there under the Little Russian main folder)Under Little Russian, I imported Gujarat with 13 subfolders and nothing shows up ( and the photos are there under the Little Russian main folder)I also imported some photos from Mexico as a folder under Little Russian and they are there too, but the folder does not show up.
I tried to click on the folder Little Russian and click add a folder...when I name it Gujarat, it says it is already there and I cannot have two folders of the same name.
I tried to click on GO TO FOLDER IN LIBRARY, but nothing seems to happen.
    I can't figure this out.
I am very confused by this....what do you think? I would appreciate any comments.

  • IMovie HD, iPhoto 08/09 - Photos import, render and then disappear.

    *Software Overview*
    • iMovie HD
    • iPhoto 08, and iPhoto 09
    • Mac OS 10.5.6 and Mac OS 10.5.7
    • Network Home Accounts from Mac OS Server 10.5.5
    *The Issue*
    • Dragging photos from the Media Browser into iMovie HD.
    • Each photo imports, renders and then automatically disappears from iMovie HD.
    • This occurs regardless of what user is logged in, on existing Movies, or New.
    • This occurs on a clean profile, with Photos imported from another Library via Sharing.
    • This only occurs on Networked Users, Local Users have no problems.
    • If the photo is dragged to the desktop first, and then into iMovie, it works successfully.
Has anyone run into this before?

I am delighted to read that I am not the only one who gets burned by Ken in iMovie HD 6. I have spent hours on this problem and came to the same conclusion, that this is due to a glitch in OSX Leopard. The origin, mode of import or file format of the still doesn't matter. Interestingly, I seem to be the only one with the KB being stretched vertically (i.e. my fat nephew Ralf looks pretty slim). There are additional problems with the rendition of video effects. Several of the Quartz Composer effects (e.g. bump distortion, circle splash distortion) render bright and washed out.
I also discovered that iMovie HD v.5 (five) in Leopard still renders the KB effect without a flaw. I am lucky to still have the old 5 version in the box. So I work in iM 6 (iMovie 7 is the biggest software insult Apple has ever launched against their loyal fans) and when I need to bring in a KB effect I save and reopen in iM v.5, do the KB and reopen in iM 6 with the KB effect still perfectly rendered and ready for additional editing (titles, transitions). By doing most of the still imports and KB's at one time, it is not that inconvenient or time consuming. It certainly beats altering the aspect ratio of each still. Try to get hour hands on a iM 5 version until Apple fixes the bug (hopefully soon), although my fat nephew Ralf prefers the stretch version. I checked Apple's downloads, they don't offer iM 5. Check for iLife 5 on eBay. Good luck!

  • No seperate albums created when importing folders containing photos

Hi ... Need some help here please..
When importing folders containing photos in iPhoto each folder would be made into an Event. When I do the same with Photos all my pictures are placed into Albums  - All Photos. No separate Albums are made for each folder, all pictures are mixed up together.
    Why is Photos doing this?
(Im not importing from iPhoto ... New Mac)

    Simon
Yes it does say that, but I have to say that a significant number of people can't get that to work, and I've never found an adequate reason why.
I recommend that you begin to import at the bottom of your hierarchy. Drag to the left hand pane and iPhoto will create a Roll and and album of the same name. You can then create the enclosing folders in iPhoto: (File -> New Folder).

  • Best way to import folders of Photos and keep folder name?

    Hi,
Is there a way to import folders containing photos into iphoto so that once it copies into iphoto it shows up as a named album?
    OR
do always you have to create a new album, name it and then add pics to it?
    OR.....
Is there an easy way using iphoto to merge 2 different libraries into one?

In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events, uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from Finder.
Then drag a folder of images to the Albums heading in the iPhoto Window and the pics will be imported and an Album of the same name will be created.
Is there an easy way using iphoto to merge 2 different libraries into one?
Using iPhoto? No. Using the paid version ($20 approx) of iPhoto Library Manager, Yes.

  • LR 4 & 4.1 can't create new folder manually during photo import

    Windows 64, i7, 12GB RAM
I don't seem able to create a new folder manually on photo import.  This still works fine on the same PC with LR3.6.  Anyone else seeing this?  Thanks.

I've sometimes found the 'Make New Folder' option to be a bit hit and miss on Win7....so I generally avoid it. In your case, wouldn't it be easier to have Lightroom create the folder for you by setting up your Destination panel as follows:
Obviously the selected target parent folder in your case would be "Photos Working Folders", use "Organize: Into One Folder", tick the Into Subfolder box and enter the name of the sub-folder you want, e.g. raw0015. As you can see, if the sub-folder doesn't yet exist, Lightroom then shows you that it will be creating it for you.

  • Please, please help!  Photos in library disappearing before my eyes.

When I open up the iphoto library, my picture thumbnails disappear one after the next--from seemingly random places, though mostly on the right hand side)--before my eyes. My worry is that I am going to loose all my photos.
History: I have never had any problem with my iphoto program. I have never altered, moved, or renamed anything in the iPhoto library folder. I always work from within the program itself. A couple of days ago, I got a message saying I was running out of hard disk space and that I needed to eliminate some items in order to make more space. I clicked on the iPhoto trash and emptied about 2000 photos from it. After that when I scrolled in the library, the photos began to disappear and leave gray shapes with dotted outlines. No picture appears when they are clicked on.
I called the Apple Care support. The fellow I worked with suggested that I should try rebuilding iPhoto and sent me an article on how to do that. He also said that I will need to have as much free space on my hard disk as the size of the library is. The library is 16,000 MB. There are 6,000 MB still available to use. He said NOT to open up the iPhoto program until I had rebuilt the program and then he rang off.
I'm pretty innocent of how computers work and it wasn't until I realized that it's the photos and Quicktime movies from my camera themselves that are filling the disk space and that there isn't much else filling up the disk space (novels and poems and letters don't take up much space it turns out!) that I realized I am in a Catch-22 situation. How to eliminate things when I can't open the program for fear of losing all photos?
I have some but not all photos backed up on DVD. My husband has a selection on his computer but does not have the DVD burner capacity. He could burn the photos he has on a CD, but that would take forever. We do not own an external hard drive, but I am wondering whether I should see if I can find one--that's easier said than done since we live out on a headland in Ireland pretty far from everything. The closer Apple store in five hours away.
One other possibility I've come up with: we have an old PowerBookG4 which still has about 22,000 GB available on it. Could it be used in some way to hold the photos from my computer (The MacBook) as I try rebuilding the iPhoto program on my computer (the MacBook)? We have a firewire.
We are going to Paris next week, and I want to be able to take a ton of photos (my great joy!) without worrying that I'll have nowhere to put them. (Memory cards are expensive here.)
Any help would be very appreciated--thank you in advance. And I'd also be grateful if it were couched in the easiest to understand computer language possible (don't assume I know a whole lot.)

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1. Go to your Pictures Folder. In their is a folder called the iPhoto Library Folder. Inside it is a folder called Originals, and that contains Roll Folders. Your pics should be inside there.
That's: Pictures / iPhoto Library Folder / Originals / Rolls
So, first off, confirm that your photos are there.
    2. Yes you do need to clear off disk space, and yes, your iPhoto files and any music you have a good candidates for moving to an external disk. You can purchase an external disk from the online apple Store (http//:www.apple.com/iestore is the Irish AppleStore) Look for the 'Storage' link on the left hand side. They'll ship it to you in three or four days (in my experience)
    3. In the meantime, rebuilding your library will require disk space. It's not difficult, and doesn't take very long. If you have Firewire on the old Powerbook then here's what you do:
    1. Turn Off the Old Powerbook. Connect it to the Macbook using a FireWire cable
    2. Hold down the 'T' key and start the Powerbook. A Firewire symbol will appear on the screen, and the PB will turn up on your MacBook desktop, as an external disk.
    3. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder (from your Pictures Folder) to the PB - just drag and drop it to the icon on the desktop.
    4. Confirm that your Pictures have crossed over safely. Then double check. And then check again, because...
    5. Put the iPhoto Library Folder in the Pictures Folder of the MacBook into the trash and empty it. (Note: Be sure that your pics are on the old Powerbook!!!) (We have to trash the iPhoto Library Folder from the MacBook to make space for the rebuild.)
    6. Launch iPhoto on the Macbook. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on the PB and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
This should give you a working iPhoto Library on your Macbook.
But you still have a space problem, and you should deal with it as a priority. Once you have got an external disk, post back and we'll go through how to put your library on to it.
    Greetings from sunny Clare.
    Regards

    Hello dancetoday07,
Let's see if we can square this away for you. With backing up your iPhone, it will back everything you have using iTunes and if you use iCloud, by default, backs up everything. After you have made a backup you can restore that to put the contents of the backup on your replacement iPhone. If you want to put certain things back on, you will at least need to export the content to your computer, like your photos and videos. If you only want to put certain things back on, then you will need to sync that over with iTunes. All the information you will need are in the articles below.

  • Aperture 3 Importing Folders as Projects is taking days to complete

    Hello,
I acquired Aperture 3 a week ago and decided to give it a try. I've been using Lightroom since version 1. All my photos are in NEF (Nikon RAW) format and stored on an External HD. I used the A3 option FILE > IMPORT > FOLDERS AS PROJECTS command and selected folders from year 2008, 2009, 2010...this are 109 folders (13401 photos) from a total of 348 from year 2003 to date, meaning I am importing a fraction of all photos.
A very important note: I use the import option "Store Files: In their current location"...so that A3 is not moving, copying and so on, any files - it's just referencing them.
The problem starts here - it took Aperture 3 almost 24 hours to complete the "import"...i.e. to fill all the Projects with the corresponding photos. But the IMPORT PROCESS continues forever, today is day 4...the Aperture Library on this has grown to 18 GB and still growing. There is small but constant Hard Disk activity between the External HD with the Photos and the internal HD with the Library.
If I try to quit Aperture I get a message box:
+"Do you want to continue importing? Aperture is currently importing files. If you quit, the import task will be canceled and any files that have not been fully imported will be removed. | Quit | Continue |"+
How much longer shall I wait? Is it really importing or is this a bug? Why is there no progress bar or counter to give an estimate or idea of what is going on?
Just as reference: I imported the same folders (109) into Lightroom 3 Beta with the option "Store Files: In their current location" and it took only 1-2 hours.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kostadin

    Kostadin,
I'm noticing same thing today. This morning I imported about 100 Canon 7D RAW images from my memory card, which took about 5 minutes upon which I got the "Delete Images and Eject Card?" dialog. I accepted and removed the card.
4 hours later, I still have a "Importing..." spinning ball on Aperture. For the first couple of hours, I was trying to send emails with a few images and it would take 20 minutes for Aperture to generate the JPEG in the email. Now it only takes 10-15 seconds. BUt it is still "importing". So aperture continues to function, but it has some process going which keeps my CPU fans running on the MacBook Pro.
I am anxious to see just how long it takes to IMPORT... after it finishes importing.
What's it doing for this long?
    Jim

  • How to keep photos in folders when removing from iOS?

I usually use Preview on Mac to import photos and delete them from the iPad. I've started putting photos in folders but this organization is not maintained on import. Is there a way to maintain this when importing? Or even better: is there a way to leave certain folders on the iPad and import/delete the rest?
Of the photos that have been imported, is the folder data maintained somewhere so I can reorganize them? Maybe I need to find a better method of importing & deleting.

    arphaus wrote:

iPhoto, Image Capture, Aperture...but I have never heard of using Preview to import photos to the Mac.
Folders/albums that you create in the Photos App on the iPad are for local organization on the device itself and will not import to your Mac. These folders/albums do not contain copies of the photos, but merely use pointers to the photos to make the pictures appear in these local albums. If you create new albums in the photos app and try to remove the photos from the camera roll, they will be removed from the folders as well.

  • Solution to photo imports into IDVD

Much discussion months ago about the poor quality of photos imported into iMovie then exported to DVD. Software "Photo to Movie" by LQ Graphics that does a beautiful job of setting up your photos then render them to full quality QT. From there, import them to iDVD

The secret is space. iTunes seems to almost need the space of the photos BEFORE compression. Not only have I sometimes been unable to sync photos, but sometimes I can't sync all my photos.
Do this: hook up your iPhone, and go into Movies, if you have some, and delete 2 or 3 large movies. Don't worry, we'll put them back.
If you don't have movies, go into Apps, sort by Size, and delete several large apps until you have 2-3 GIGS of space. 2 Gigs will work for under 1000 photos, delete 3 Gigs if you have more.
    Sync.
Now turn on the photos you want, sync again. (these may already have returned on the last sync)
Now go turn on your movies and apps, sync once more.
iTunes syncs the photos LAST, so I have had some albums disappear when my iphone was full, and I added a large movie or app.
    It's all about space.

Updated to ios 6 and My iphone photos/videos are disappearing. Also when i take a photo/video it doesnt show in my camera roll. it show photos from days ago. Does anyone know how to solve this ?

All pics taken with the iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, most especially before any update/restore/etc.
If you have failed to do this then they are very likely gone.
You can try restoring from backup.

  • All folders disappeared

I just tried to create a collection and inadvertently lost all my folders. When I look on hard drive they show as empty. They are not in deleted folder. Using LR 5.

No software will be good software if you don't know how to use it. Any software can be good once you learn how to use it. You should spend some time watching beginner Lightroom tutorials at tv.adobe.com, or download the free beginner's guide to Lightroom at Lightroom 5 - Free Quick Start Guide PDF eBook | The Lightroom Queen, or both. No excuses allowed for not doing one or the other or both.
When you talk about "handling photos", I always go on a rant (not because of you Paul, but because it happens so much). My advice is that the photos come out of the camera, and are placed into whatever folder you desire (this is under your control when you Import into Lightroom), and then you leave them there FOREVER (no "handling photos"). No moving them from here to there, no moving folders from here to there. This minimizes or eliminates "handling photos" problems. (Now, there is one exception to "leave them there FOREVER": if you have to switch computers or move the photos to a new hard drive, then of course you should move the photos, but keep the folder structure the same) To organize the photos, you do not move the photos around, you do not move the folders around, there is no "handling photos" ... you use keywords and captions and other metadata inside of Lightroom. This way, you can never accidentally move the photos or folders ... and you have a more powerful organizing system.
