Photos in InDesign PDFs appear as negative images

I work in CS3 (I'm on OS 10.4.11) and am having a problem when I export a layout with photos in it to a PDF file. The PDF looks fine on my computer and prints fine to my printer, but when I send it to others, the photos will sometimes (arrgh--not always!) appear on screen and print as negative images. The placed photos are usually TIF or JPG, but are sometimes Photoshop files.
Often I am sending these documents to users who will simply print them out on their own laser printers, so typically I export as "a high-quality print." However, I have had the same problem when I've exported as "press quality." The problem remains the same whether the user is printing to a PS printer or not.
Originally I thought it might be an issue with the Acrobat version on the recipient's end. However, I recently received a PDF from co-worker who has the exact same computer model, OS, and software versions as I do. When I opened her PDF, low and behold, I saw all the photos as negatives. (It did print fine, however.)
Any idea what's going on?

To export, I select File > Export > Adobe PDF.
Adobe PDF preset: High quality print (usually) or press quality (occasionally)
Standard: none
Compatibility: Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)
Options: Optimize for fast Web view
Create tagged PDF
Export visible & printable layers.
Most of my recipients have Adobe Acrobat Pro 7.0 for the PC; however, I had the same trouble opening an InDesign-created PDF from another Mac user with the same versions of everything as me, i.e. CS3, InDesign 5.0.2, and Acrobat Pro 8.1.2.

  • Photos appear as negative images after updating to iOS 7

I have the iPhone 4S.  After downloading iOS 7, my photos are still present but appear as negative images.  Anyone else have this problem?

It is still there and the same as before, you just have to click on the various views available.  I think it is the album view that shows the Camera Roll first as before.  The default view after downloading iOS 7 is not the same, but you can change  it.

  • Synced Photos appearing as negative image on IPOD Touch

Hi - jpegs synced from my computer are appearing as photo "negative" images ie black is white. This is for both colour and black and white JPEGS. Removed the photos and re synced them all to no avail. Couldn't find any help topics - Help !!

They are sorted on the iPod by the modification date of the photos. To sort them the whay you want you can change the modification dates on the Mac and then sync or:

  • Saving a PDF as a negative image...is that possible?

I'm trying to save a PDF from Illustrator as a negative image...like in the print menu in 'Output' you can change the image to Negative.
I need to do this so I can send it to an image setter.
I looked in the help menu and briefly online but I couldn't find anything, please let me know if you know how I can do this or if it isn't possible!
    Thanks!

    Well...
Usually we just send an Illustrator file to the image setter and when we print it, we select the image to be negative and that works out fine.
Now we're trying to send an 11"x17" file when the setting is for 8.5"x11". We couldn't find anywhere in the manuals or help menus for the software where to change the page size on the image setter. Then we were finally able to get it to work with sending a 11"x17" PDF, but now we need it to be a negative image..
    It's so frustrating!
    But thanks for your help!

  • InDesign, PDFs and re-sizing images ...

I've just completed a photo book in InDesign and am ready to export it as a high-rez PDF and send it to the printer.
All of the original images are 300dpi.  The original images, where needed, were all re-sized to fit either a spread in the book or a full single page (vertical).
But quite a few of the images that have been imported to the InDesign document have been made smaller than a full page spread or single page within the InDesign document itself.  Some are 70% smaller than full page or full spread.  The original JPEGs and/or TIFFs were not resized.
The InDesign document, then, is linking to an original size image ... even though the same image in the InDesign document may be smaller as well as cropped somewhat.
So my question is: before creating the PDF, do I need to go back to the original JPEGs, resize/crop them to match what I've laid out in InDesign and then re-import them?  I hope not.  That feels like nearly having to start all over!  I've searched extensively for an answer to my question, but I've not found anything even remotely close to this topic.
As a test, today I created one complete PDF straight from the InDesign file (almost 200 pages), and it looks really good ... 99% close to the original images.  But with images that have been reduced as much as 60-70%, I'm seeing a slight loss of detail and some plugging up in the shadows; not much, mind you ... but enough to cause me some concern.  I believe the reduced images are losing a touch of crispness.
I know if I were doing a straight size reduction in Photoshop and saving a pic as a resized JPEG or TIF image, I'd be re-sampling and brightening the reduced image (a little), adding some local contrast, adding micro contrast, etc to compensate for the lost data.  Seems to me the same thing needs to be done with images made smaller within InDesign.  Then again, maybe not.
Your experienced advice and suggestions are very welcomed.  Thanks in advance.

Alicia'sDad: As I read your original post, I have a lot of trouble telling what your real question is.
You make a lot of statements and sound very confused?
Re-reading several times, I gather your concern is that the image quality in your PDF output appears to be degraded? Is that correct?
If so, you should tell us how you are viewing the PDF file (on paper? viewing it on-screen or printing it from Adobe Reader? From Acrobat Pro? From Preview.app? Non-Adobe software has been known to do bad things to PDF quality.)
What are the actual and effective PPI of the images in question?
    You write:

You should not have to do this. Certainly unless you have some higher-resolution source material, you are unlikely to get significantly different downsampling from Photoshop than InDesign will produce.
But also, tell us your output device. What kind of resolutions are we takling about? If you're printing, say, a 300ppi black and white image on a 300 dpi laser printer, you should realize that a 300dpi laser printer can only produce about 60lpi because of halftoning, so a 300ppi greyscale image won't look much different than a 100ppi greyscale image on paper. Etc. (Though on screen is very very different.)
Good to know that re-sizing within InDesign during export does re-sampling.  I wasn't aware of that.  Thanks again.
Carefully read the settings in the PDF Export dialog. All things being equal, you should probably use the PDF/X preset.
Thanks for the response Peter.  I'm not sure what you mean by using Zip compression to "make the difference."  What "difference" are you referring to?
When you export to PDF, you have settings like this:
It's hard for me to imagine you are in a situation where this really matters, so I'm a bit skeptical. But depeannding on setting here, InDesign will do several things. It will resample your images to a reasonable ppi for a decent output device (e.g. a 1200ppi/200lpi imagesetter or comparable), and it will compress them. The default compression is JPEG, which does mean that it can introduce compression artifacts. If you change the compression to ZIP, then there will be no compression artifacts because ZIP is a lossless compression. The compression will also be less effective, so your file size may increase, but that's probably not a problem or real consideration.
p.s.: I think it's best to keep the font size in your posts the default. If everyone made their posts bigger it'd just be weird.

  • PDFs appear with fragmented images, metadata missing

Can anyone help with this one?
We use InDesign CS3 to create PDF 1.6's, directly from InDesign export. The metadata contained in the images on the layout normally are visible when you control click and select "show metadata" on the image in the resulting PDF with Acrobat's touch up object tools. Ocassionally, there is an unknown problem in the process where a given image will "fragment" -- when you click on it in the PDF, a frame surrounds only part of the image, and there's no "show metadata" choice to select. This is kiling us because we doconstruct those PDFs and put them into our long term archive, and the metadata is missing there!
    Any help would be appreicated!
    Thanks.

Sounds like some type transparency flattening going on in there. InDesign itself has issues when exporting to lower PDF versions (1.3) and also if transparent objects are around say hyperlinks/buttons etc. The XMP data can be destroyed since it's been broken down and is not the original content any more.

  • RAW files appear as negative images. Please explain.

I imported RAW images from a card reader and selected DNG. In the Library, the images appear as blotches of color or presents or whatever. I've tried to find a solution for a week, but have not succeeded. It's really quite frustrating because I'm sure it's something simple.

Blotches of color could indicate that the file is corrupted. This is almost always a hardware problem ... camera card, card reader or USB cable, hard disk. Try using other hardware to transfer your photo to a different hard disk. see if that helps.

  • Imported documents (jpg and pdf) showing up negative photos

I am putting together a newsletter in Pages '09 (v 4.3). From time-to-time, when I import a JPG or PDF that has a photo in the document, the photo reverses itself and becomes a negative image. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Running OSX 10.8.4
    Thanks!

I think I may have solved this.... I am not sure which of these steps did it or if it really requires all of them, but this worked for me (well pretty much...)
My theory based on observations above was maybe the system photo library was still somehow set to the old iPhoto one and I needed to force it to update. So, I created a new photo library by starting up photos with 'option' held down. I added a couple of photos to it, and in photos preferences on my mac set it to be the system library. I then started iTunes and synced it to my iPhone - the photos in the new library appeared on the phone. I then quit photos and iTunes, restarted photos with 'option' held down and this time selected the 'proper' photos library. I set it to the system lib in photos preferences. For good measure I also cleared the iPod photo cache in this library (detailed instructions for all of these steps were just taken from online help).
Now when I restart iTunes and resynced, all worked!!
The only outstanding issue is for some reason a seemingly random collection of old photos from years ago are being synced too, despite the fact I told it to just do the last 12 months in iTunes. Still much better than before!

  • Indesign CS5 is automatically altering the appearance of RGB images on the screen?

I am working on the layout for a plant field guide. The photos are all RGB files and when placed into indesign they appear as they should. However on some pages (pages where there are lots of images) the colour automatically appears as if converted to CMYK. This appearance suddenly applys to the whole page and every image displayed.  If I drag one of these images which looks terrible in CMYK to the next page it goes back to looking like it does in RGB.
I have tried changing the colour management of the images in Photoshop and Indesign and saving files as every possible format (jpg, png, tiff, psd, pdf etc). Makes no difference.
When I expert the document to pdf for printing - the same thing has occured. The one page - with lots of images - has generated with the appearance of CMYK but the following page with fewer images still has bright colours (same as the RGB original file). When I print this pdf to a CMYK printer the files print as per the pdf - the page with images which appear in CMYK colour format - look dull and are not true to the flowers colours and the other page prints as per the RGB files - perfectly.
Can anyone tell me how I can override this change in Indesign CS5? It seems to have little to do with the colour management of the images and more to do with the percentage of the page which is RGB colour images.
Any help would be much appreciated.

This is the first time I've posted in a help forum. This solved all my problems. Hopefully I didn't offend to many CMYK inks along the way.
    You guys are brilliant.
    I am a converted friend.

  • All images appear in negative or x-ray

Hi I'm not sure what happened but everything(photos, internet, itunes...) in my display appears like a photo negative. Just as if you were to use the x-ray feature in photo booth for everything. I've tried the cplor sync utility and changing the display in System Preferences but nothing has helped. When I shut it down and turn it back on everything is back to normal for a second then it goes back to negative images. I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Some how my display was changed to white on black instead of black on white in Universal Access. Oops! Thank You!!

  • One page displays as negative image when saving PDF to reduced size in Preview

    Imac Intel Mid 2007
    OS X 10.5.8
    Preview v4.2
I have a multi-page PDF I'm trying to save to a reduced size.
The document was constructed of separate pages, some of which were created as Photoshop PDFs in Photoshop CS4 and others were saved as PDF's from Word.  After moving over the individual PDF's to the side bar, the document saves fine in Preview at full size. When I use the quartz filter to "Save As"  "Reduced File Size" one page saves as a negative image and the others are all fine.
One suggestion I saw in a similar thread was that the mode in PS might be CMYK, however it is not and it is RGB.
Any help as to solving this would be greatly appreciated.

    n.gilbert wrote:
If I select all pages 'save as' will only save out one page and not all.
    JPEG is single-page.
If I print and choose 'pdf to jpeg'
    Elaborate, please.
Is there a way to save to pages out in one go to jpeg where I can adjust the dpi setting?
Yes. Build an Automator workflow using the PDFs > Render PDF Pages as Images action.
Once I have the reduced jpegs it's easy enough to reimport into preview and save as a pdf.
If the desired final output is multi-page PDF, no need to go through all that. You can do the task in Acrobat Pro (PDF Optimizer), or in Preview (Save as > PDF > Quartz Filter). If the current Reduce File Size filter doesn't provide satisfactory quality, use ColorSync Utility to duplicate it (or make a new filter from scratch) and adjust it to fit your needs.

  • InDesign equivalent of LiveCycle's "Image Field" in PDF form creation?

LiveCycle has a PDF form field called "Image Field". We add this field to the PDF files we create so that our end users can select and import a JPEG image into their PDF document using Adobe Reader.
Now we would like to use InDesign to produce the same PDF form files as an alternative to using LiveCycle. Does InDesign have a PDF form field like LiveCycle's "Image Field"? We haven't found it yet.
In other words, does someone know in InDesign how to create a field in PDF forms which has the same functionality as LiveCycle's "Image Field"? LiveCycle's field works in enabled Adobe Reader files, and permits JPEG format, among others.
    Thank you,
    Kevin
P.S. We discovered a way to create PDF forms in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI with similar functionality by using JavaScript, but the Acrobat Pro created documents only permit Adobe Reader to import PDF files, not JPEG or other image formats. So Adobe Acrobat Pro XI was not a viable alternative to LiveCycle for creating our PDF files. We'd like to know if we need to rule out InDesign, too.

It's worth separating out the different responsibilities and products.
Whether a functionality exists in Reader depends on the Acrobat team. Reader, being free, is limited by design, the aim of the design being to sell copies of Acrobat. Obviously, Reader can't make PDFs or do preflighting. Less obviously, there are a bunch of JavaScript functions that don't work. Sometimes, with Reader enabling, more functions become available. (There are different kinds of Reader enabling, some of which need very expensive extra products).
Whether a form capability exists at all is largely down to the PDF specification (now an ISO standard) or the XFA specification. Adobe can choose to go beyond the specification but largely choose not to.
So, the InDesign team can make form fields, not because the Acrobat team approves, but because the way this is done is written down in the PDF Specification. InDesign _could_ choose to make XFA forms, but thank goodness that will never happen.
So, if you want InDesign forms to do something you first have to ask: can Acrobat forms to this. NOT XFA (LIveCycle forms) which are done by a different team to different rules. So far as I know Acrobat forms cannot do the sort of thing you want; that is, placing arbitrary graphics, but in certain circumstances they can place PDF files.
    Why make the distinction?
    - If Acrobat can make forms that do this, then so can InDesign: it's worth asking the InDesign people to do it.
    - If Adobe limit Adobe Reader, there is no use asking the InDesign team to solve this.
    - If Acrobat can't make forms that do this, then nor can InDesign.

How are you trying to open the photos?
    - from windows explorer? - double licking or right clicking and selecting Open with?

Thanks Steve. I should have mentioned that I’m still using CS6. Wonder if that’s the difference? All I get in the sidebar is Photo Booth which is useless.
