Photos in project damaged ! Help ?

In one of my projects from 6 weeks ago, the images are scrambled. This is to say, I open the project and look at one pic. The pic appears fine, but there is a 'loading' message. Then the image jumps to half size, then it becomes scrambled. If I export the image I get a black pic.
I have checked the originals in finder, they are ok. I have done all three of the rebuild database options at Aperture startup. No more ideas.
I am hoping that someone knows this problem and has an incredibly easy solution.

Ian,
sorry, no incredibly easy solution - more a "me too".
Are your images jpegs? And does the corruption look like the corruption in this thread? Re: Images getting corrupted?
Then you probably have imported corrupted master image files. During the import the preview generated in the camera is displayed, and then another preview is computed from the corrupted master image file.
I have checked the originals in finder, they are ok.
How did you check this? Did you really display them at 100%, so you can be sure the masters are o.k. and you did not see the camera previews in the Finder? I found that all my backups directly from the card also have been corrupted but looked o.k. because of the good camera previews.
In my case the cause of the trouble was a broken card reader, that was corrupting the images occasionally . After I replaced the card reader the problem has been solved. So if your images are still on the card, try a different way to read the card - different card reader or different cable to connect to your camera.

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Handling Projects & More--Help!!!

I currently have quite a collection of folders on several large hard drives named like "20091215" or "F30_20091215" and others... I need to consolidate ALL of my images (all JPEGs) using Aperture.
-Verification. I like to verify that my existing folders are being referenced by Aperture (AP). As I recall, I was often not able to verify these numbers... there was a discrepancy between the numbers in the folder in the Finder and the listing in AP. I think I had to switch to a list view to see the numbers... ouch.
-Projects. With rare exception, the folders of images (typically named as YYYYMMDD) are not really part of any real project. The correspond with the day the card was saved to the computer and reformatted. Even my collection of European pics from 2008 probably have a few shots (around the house perhaps?) from before and after that are not from my trip. So, if I were to created a project Europe 2008... I would feel compelled to move the pics that are not Euro related out of those folders... which could get tedious. I want to work smart and let AP do the heavy lifting. I need your help getting over this Analysis To Paralysis issue I'm having with getting my library setup. I need a workflow. I was thinking that each folder (dragged in to the AP window) could become a project... I was thinking that I would move the images to another destination so that I can ensure that their being referenced by AP....
Video. How do you handle video that's shot with your digital camera? I guess you have to manually deal with it... what's your workflow?
Duplicate Detection. I think some people mentioned that they didn't see much value in this but It's important to me when trying to get organized. When in doubt I can import a misc. folder of valuable images to verify that they've been imported. Any idea how this works when you are copying the images to a new destination on import?
Keeping your place... If I'm carefully dragging folders into AP, it seems that it would be easy to lose your place and forget what's been imported an what has not... do you have a any tips on avoiding this problem...? Perhaps color coding each folder that has been imported and verified?
Date & Time... I just imported a total of about 1,500 images from two different cameras.... Within Aperture I noticed that one camera is off by 3:51:17. I will need to add this value to get the correct time within Aperture. However, I noticed that the Finder reports the same file with the time 6 hours earlier. I'm quite sure that I did not ask Aperture to alter the time upon import. Also, the cameras show the time in Aperture as CDT (Central Daylight Time)? Okay, why does the Finder differ? What to do now? Also, when I do make the correction to the images from one camera, can I modify all of them within Aperture including the master file too??? I SHOULD update the master with the proper date & time right??? I normally use a third party application to alter the date & time to the proper value... if I do will Aperture see the update? Do the images know the time zone for which the Date & Time applies? I get the feeling there is an issue here with the Time Zones.
    Cheers & Happy New Year!
    Robert

    Robert,
I will try to sort through your questions one by one.
Verification: yes I too wish that Aperture listed the number of photos being browsed, and not just in list view but in other view modes too. Anyway, the discrepancy might be explained if you realize that Aperture counts versions, not masters. Therefore if you have more than one version for any master image, those counts will not match up.
Projects: well... the best I can say is that, you might want to give yourself a more clear definition of what a "project" is to you. For me, a project is not just how Aperture groups my photos. It's also how I shoot and work from beginning to end. So, a project is a group of import sessions from a certain event. I would, for example, import all my Europe photos into a Europe project, format my card, and then move on to shoot other things. Aperture allows you some flexibility. For example, I put all my past images in projects named after its year (2008, 2009, etc) and inside each of those, photos are grouped into "albums" by each event. But for this current year, I have a folder called "2010" in the Aperture Project Inspector tab, and in that 2010 folder I have one project for each event. At the end of 2010, I will make a "2010" project and move all of that year's images from their projects into their event-named albums within that 2010 project, and here comes year 2011. This lets me organize past photos into projects-by-year, while still letting me work on this year's photos grouped into projects-by-event. So, within the inspector tab you can have: folders> projects> albums and books. That's the hierarchy and you can use that structure to your liking.
Video: use iMovie or Final Cut, Aperture is not meant to handle any video.
Duplicate detection: such a function would be confusing to people who want to have several versions to work from a single master image. Duplicates can be avoided by managing and importing your images correctly, not moving or messing with the referenced files except through using Aperture, and giving names to images at the time of import in a way that prevents confusion.
Keeping your place: yes, I did my old folders by color-coding the finished imports with a blue label. However, new images should be imported straight from camera or card, use Aperture to rename the imported masters and append IPTC/EXIF data, and then the memory cards should be formatted IN CAMERA after each import. This last step helps to avoid confusion and prevent early card corruption.
DAte & Time: well, the questions here are overwhelming so I will answer the bigger ones. If you want to just edit Date&Time from images taken on, let's say, only D90 and not D40, then:
    1) click on search icon (not the search field) top right of the window, to bring up a floating search HUD.
    2) click the + icon top right in the search HUD, and select EXIF
3A) one of the EXIF data is camera model, so you would select that and type in the model name as it appears in Aperture's EXIF field (Nikon D90, etc).
3B)It is also possible to limit the search criteria by which import session, which date it was shot, etc etc.
    4) hit enter and you get all the images that fit your criteria.
5)Select all the images you found, then go up to "Metadata" in the menu bar.
    6) drop down to "Adjust Date and Time..."
    and that's it.
    best,
    Jin

  • Some Aperture photos and projects missing from iLife Media Browser

Good evening - having a little bit of trouble getting Aperture to work smoothly with my iLife media browser (i.e., inserting photos into Mail, Pages, Keynote, etc).
I currently have 5699 photos and 131 projects in Aperture. But the iLife Media Browser only shows me 5131 photos and 130 projects; when clicking on individual projects in the browser, anywhere from 3 to 70 photos per project are missing. Tried repairing permissions, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database - this improved the issue, but didn't completely resolve it as 5679 photos now show in the Media Browser, and 20 remain missing. Also tried deleting, and generating previews for all my photos in the library. No change.
My library is mostly referenced, with a few photos managed.
Obviously in the grand scheme of things 20 photos missing in the Media Browser not that big a deal. But wanting to get to the root cause though because without solving this issue, I'm concerned about a larger underlying problem that may only get worse as my library grows.
Has anyone had, or resolved a problem similar to this? And can anyone offer any additional suggestions? Are there any specific files that feed the iLife Media Browser that I can delete and rebuild that may solve this issue?
    thanks,
    Mark

I think I've ironed this out. Several intertwined issues. I took a moment to type out my notes; hopefully it helps you guys solve this quickly if you get a call from someone else on this down the line.
[1] original problem of several hundred items missing in Media Browser: probably an issue of previews not being built. Mostly fixed when I regenerated previews for my library, but repairing permissions and repairing the database may have helped too.
[2] Residual problem of 20 items still missing (5698 items displayed in Aperture when selecting Inspector > Library > Photos; 5677 items displayed in Mail Photo Browser). My issue wasn't as much with 20 missing items in a browser as it was with trying to understand the root cause and whether I had an underlying Aperture, Aperture Library, or OS problem that would bite me later. Turns out several things were causing this problem:
[2a] In Aperture, when you select Inspector > Library > Photos , all your content is displayed: photos, videos, and any audio clips you may have imported (e.g., a recorded audio clip on your camera narrating shoot, location, client, exposure value etc). So even though you've selected "Photos", your "xxx items displayed" count on the bottom of the screen reflects all your imported content. This is not the case in the Media Browser - of which there are two variants in Mac OS:
[2a.1] Mail has a Photo Browser, which behaves much like a "Media Browser Lite: the title bar says "Photo Browser", it only accesses your Aperture and iPhoto Libraries, and only shows photos and video.
[2a.2] iWork applications have a more comprehensive Media Browser, where you can select between Audio, Photos, and Movies. If you select Audio the iWork Media Browser will show any audio files present in your Aperture or iTunes library. If you select Movies, the iWork Media Browser will show any movie clips present in your Aperture or iMovie libraries. Photos behaves the same way as "Photo Browser" in Mail, showing any photos present in your Aperture (or iPhoto if installed) libraries.
Turns out I had three audio clips in my Aperture library. When selecting "Photos" in either the Mail or iWork browsers, the total item count will only show photos and videos - no audio clips. So now 17 missing items remain.
[2b] Stacks - one project contained nine photos grouped into a stack. Only the key photo of a stack is previewed/shown in Media Browser. So a stack of nine photos will only show as one in the browser - unstacking the photo will allow them all to appear. So now nine missing items.
[2c] Seven photographs somehow had broken links to their referenced masters, and needed to be reconnected. Down to two missing items.
[2d] One photo simply wouldn't cooperate - no matter how many times I regenerated the preview, or deleted the preview and then regenerated it, nothing worked. I deleted it from the library and reimported it. One missing item remains.
[2e] Final missing item was a photograph I rejected. Makes sense; as media browser does not display rejects.
Problem solved!! Hopefully this might be of help to somebody in the future.
    cheers,
    Mark

  • Can't Find my Photo Book Project?!

I was in the middle of adding pictures to my photo book project and it gave me the little round "I'm thinking" Icon and it was taking forever, it sat for more than 5 minutes so I did a hard shut down.
When I restarted my Mac my whole project was gone!! All of my pictures are still there in the events section but the project is nowhere to be found. Please tell me I didn't just loose hours of work!? Where does iPhoto store projects by default.
Also I have Time Machine and I tried to back up the entire iPhoto application and still no luck. Is there somewhere where my project is hiding?
Please give me some advice, thanks!!

    Dana:
For a quicker and easier way to recover from similar losses in the future see the tip at the end of my signature below. You can run the referenced application as frequently as you want, after every import, every change to a book or calendar, etc. like you would use the Save command in other applications. iPhoto does not have to be closed to use it, just idle. If the problem exists, just replace the damaged database file with the backup version and you're back up and running.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I get error message: not enough space to download when I try to buy a tv series on Itunes. It tells me to delete photos or videos to make space, but I have no photos and videos. Help?

I get error message: not enough space to download when I try to buy a tv series on Itunes. It tells me to delete photos or videos to make space, but I have no photos and videos. Help?

I would guess that a TV series takes up a fair amount of storage capacity. It is just a standard message I think that may indicate that you are actually running low on storage space.
If you go to Settings>General>About how many GBs are specified as being available?  If you are low on space maybe deleting some apps may help.

  • Why can't I cut and paste photos between project?

I recently made the transition from iPhoto to Aperture. One of the weird things is that I can't cut and paste photos between projects. In iPhoto this is an easy way to organize your projects if some photos are in the wrong place.
You also can't split projects, in iPhoto you can do this easily. Say, if two day's photos ending being in the same project, in iPhoto there's a button that you split them in the middle. Is there something like this in Aperture?

    Copy and Paste:
In iPhoto "copy and paste" was possible, because it was not possible in the early versions, to see both projects at the same time, the one you are moving from, and the one you are moving to.
In Aperture you simply drag from the source project to the destination project to move image versions around. Also, it is easy to see more than one project in the Browser at the same time, see: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Two or More Browsers Open
To drag to another project, select the images in the project, then drag to the other project in the source list, for example:
To split a project, select the images you want to have in the split part, then create a new project from these images: Enable the check mark "Move selected items to new project". This will split the original project.

  • I want to take the photos off my iPhone and put them directly onto an external hard disk. I want to bypass iPhoto altogether. When I link my iPhone to my computer, it only opens in iTunes, which only gives me the option to save my photos to iPhoto. Help!

I want to take the photos off my iPhone and put them directly onto an external hard disk - I don't have any room left on my computer. I want to bypass iPhoto altogether. When I link my iPhone to my computer, it only opens in iTunes, which only gives me the option to save my photos to iPhoto. Help!  This is seriously frustrating!.
Additionally, I'd like to be able to take the 2000+ photos out of iPhoto and put them on a disk in a folder. I have managed to export them to the hard disk but it's just plonked all 2000+ photos in a list - not ideal if I want to use it for anything else. And then I have to manually delete the photos from iPhoto. Is there not a quick and easy way of dealing with this?
Anyone got any bright ideas? Thanks for your help!

I too would like to be able to do this. Just put them where i want the. IFTT a scripting app will put the images in dropbox for you , but its been pretty iffy.

I cannot find my photos or contacts.  Help how do I get them back after a iclound backup was done due to needed to get a new iphone.  HELP

I believe I had leopard and I was having issues getting errors of system not being supported. I contacted Apple and was advised I needed to upgrade to snow leopard. My laptop is from 2009 and I haven't done anything to it till now. The apple rep also stated I should do a fresh install when putting snow leopard on so my laptop would run faster. Apple rep told me to get a external hard drive to put my info on it so the fresh install would reset everything to like it was brand new. I had someone help me with getting everything on the EHD.. doing the right format and such and then once that was done I put in the CD for snow leopard and hit install. Which brings me to now, with everything but my pictures. I have the EHD plugged in... now what? What do I do? I have looked in the EHD in iphoto and it was all standard images *not my pictures but images of a check mark or an arrow again not actual pictures. I don't see a folder pictures and i looked for images and found nothing. I have Applications, Included Free Designs, Library, System, User Guides and Information and Users, those are my options and non of those have a "pictures"
    I have iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 & Mac OS X version 10.6.3

That's possible if he didn't connect to a WiFi hotspot after taking them.  I don't think the "Personal" Photo Stream uploads over Cellular, unless they changed it since the last time I used it.
If that's the case, then the photos likely didn't upload to Photo Stream and are stuck on the phone.
And you're not going to be able to get them back, either.

  • How to migrate photos from a Photo Book project to Photo Album

Is there a way to move the photos I've collected in my Apple Photo Book project file back into my Photo Library as a single album?  The originals were spread out over 5 years. Took me a while to find them, then save them to this project file.   I want to save this condensed group of images back to one album in my Photo Library for easy access.  Though the pics were taken over a 5 year period, they are of the same, favorite vacation spot.
I have OX 10.10.3 running Photos.  Have iCloud sync.
    Thanks!

    Hi Godfrey,
Make a new album in the source column naming it after your book
Highlight the book in the source column
Start at the first page of your book
Drag each image from the book into the new album in the source column.
This can only be done one by one. I have tried "selecting all" and it does not work.

The backups for your version are date-time stamped as the name and with an extension of .fcpproject. They look like this.
The original project is named CurrentVersion.fcpproject.
You need to replace the CurrentVersion with the backup file and rename it to be CurrentVersion.fcpproject.
With FCPX closed, I suggest you move the original to the Trash, but not empty it. Then promote your backup one level higher in the project folder hierarchy (to be at the same level that the original previously occupied. Then rename the backup.
Open up FCPX, which should now recognize your project.
