Photos (JPGs) won't display in Finder Icon view

Ever since upgrading, many folders (including new ones that I create on my Desktop and elsewhere) have problems displaying JPGs that are added to the folder when using icon view (thumbnails). Basically, the window appears empty. If I change the view to list, column, or cover flow, then they appear fine. This has happened with about 80% of my folders.
Anyone else have this issue? Any known fixes?
It drives me crazy since I use the thumbnail (icon) view all of the time and never had problems with Mavericks.
The only workaround (which works sometimes) is to copy all of the JPGs to another folder. This seems to regenerate the thumbnails for some reason. But later the same folder ceases to work again. So I'm not sure what is going on. Using a mid 2012 macbook pro retina, 2.7 i7 and 16GB of RAM.
Apple needs to fix this if it is a widespread problem.

Great suggestion! Unfortunately it didn't make any difference.
However, I have more details on this bizarre issue:
If I reboot the Mac (safe mode or regular mode), the icons do appear. But if I copy or move the files to a new folder, they are invisible again.
Also, if I copy the folder full of JPGs into a new folder, then open the new folder, the subfolder is also hidden in icon view.
If I choose Edit > Select All, the Finder window shows the correct quantity of files in the folder that are selected (even though they are all invisible).
I've tried changing from discrete to integrated graphics, changing the display resolution, but so far nothing works (except the temporary fix of rebooting).

  • Photo page won't display properly in safari

    Hi everyone!
I'm completely new to building websites and need some of your expert advice?
For some reason my photo pages won't display properly in Safari but ok in Firefox?
It worked fine a week ago and I can't think what I've done wrong since I republished last night?

    Can anyone help?
    I'll buy you a pint!
    Cheers

    No luck unfortunately.
I changed the background to a solid and made the changes that you suggested roddy, but neither seemed to work. I know I must be doing something wrong? Do the photos appear ok with you roddy? All I see, is half the page i.e nav bar, top image, 'the house & garden etc text and top half of the darker box where the thumbnails should appear. And this happens with all 3 photo pages currently on the site.

I've been clearing my cache in both browsers every time I republish.
I've also tried upgrading to the new 3.0.3 beta Safari? You'd think - out of all the browsers- iWeb would work seamlessly with Safari wouldn't you? - Firefox is fine.
Do you think I should start from scratch?

  • Blank pages in LION upgrade. Firefox, finder ICON view etc.

Installed Lion over Snow Leopard. Macbook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo, 4gb Ram.
If I open Firefox 5 the page is blank (though the small preview shows the page ok)
Finder in ICON view is blank, change to list view and it is OK. Back to ICON view and blank again.
If I open the App store and view the Lion screen the description is OK but the details in the box are blank.
It's almost as though it is flash being blocked or something.

    DisplayLink driver installed?
    Same issue here.
At first I find out blank Finder icon view and blank Firefox, later I found that most of the apps have this issue, including Photoshop and even Preview.
I am using a mid '09 MacBook Pro, and I have an external display attached via a USB cable, supported by a DisplayLink driver.
I pull out the USB external monitor, uninstall the DisplayLink driver, and everything go fine now.

  • JPG won't display in Image box.

Trying to add a logo in JPG format to the top of the form using the Image control, but it won't display the image nor print it. If I use a GIF file it works fine, but looks horrible. I'm new at this, any ideas?

I finally figured it out after posting another frustrating comment to this thread. I can't take the credit, however, as it was quickly solved by Irv Kanode in another thread. I have copied his exact post below. It solved this issue in seconds:

Check some of your JPEGs for CMYK vs RGB.
Might the ones that fail be CMYK and the ones that work be RGB?
When images don't work are you seeing a broken image icon or...?

    Irv,
Thanks for the reply. The images that didn't work were CMYK. When I converted to RGB they worked.
The images that didn't work were coming up with random grey scale colors.

  • Poster frame error in finder icon view

I've been setting poster frames with control click. While iTunes usually shows the frame I choose, the finder, when in icon view, doesn't. It often picks something close (usually earlier). I usually have to search around to get it to set to the one I choose. For example (not real values here, just to illustrate): I choose the frame at 19:13, but the finder shows 19:02. Then I continue to choose: 19:15, 19:17, 19:21. Each time iTunes is correct (though I have to sometimes change views), but the finder won't change, until I hit on the one that is close to what it likes. Even then, it's often a little wrong, usually a few seconds before. I don't know anything about keyframes, but would that be what it's using?

I think I've narrowed it down: When I scroll in iTunes it jumps to "hint" frames. Those are the frames it's accepting in the finder.

  • How do I show file size in the Finder icon view for images?

How can I add the file size to the icon view "File Info" for images?
I know how to get it to display the image size under View Options. In this mode it shows pixel dimensions for some images (not for svg or pdfs tho) and file size for some non-images (rar, zip, but not txt or plain text files).
Is there some plist I can modify?

Just found the answer in a post with this subject:

  • Navigating Finder Icon view problem!

Okay, I have searched without success for an answer for this problem. When navigating through the directory structure in the icon view finder doesn't remember where you came from. Here is an example, say you have a folder that has a few hundred items in it (ex. itunes library folder). In icon view scroll about half way down and then double click on another folder. Okay all find and dandy but when you click on the back button you are back at the beginning of the previous directory and not half way down with the folder you were just in highlighted! Now go back to that same folder you were just in (without pressing forward) or the folder to the left of it, this time instead of clicking back you press "Apple+up arrow" then you go back and see where you came from with the folder highlighted. Makes for a frustrating time navigating through a large directory. Any way to fix this?

Ok, I think i get what you are saying.
Your using icon view? (view 1)
Try Column view (command+3), I find the hierarchical view far more navigable in general, and very useful for large numbers of files/directories, It remembers where you came from, there are just a few inconsistencies like the home, desktop, apps, utilities directories (the ones accessible via key commands) that screw it up. Other than that it's perfect.
If you don't like that view then you can always set the finder to open folders in new windows (and continue to use icon view)... If the majority of the time you don't want to have finder open folders in new windows, then leave it off and hold command (Apple) when you double click a folder to open it in a new window on that occasion.
Hope that helps your navigation problems.

  • Finder Icon View Isn't Remembered

This is frustrating me a lot. I like using icon view in Finder, but now it never remembers it and keeps going back to column view. The column view as deafult button in finder prefs is not checked, I tried erasing the .plist file for finder prefs, and it's still always using column view. Please help me. Thank you.

  • MX won't display CSS in Design View

I built a site for a client using CSS for the layout. The
client wants to do her own updates with Dreamweaver MX. We've found
that the layout does not show in Design View, so she's doing minor
updates in code view (which she's comfortable with).
A secod site she manages was done with tables and displays
    properly in Design View.
Can I assume that the problem is just that MX does not
display CSS layout? She needs an answer so she can ask her boss to
spend the money for an upgrade.

  • Deleting photos than don't display in finder - just an icon not image

    Hi
I have plugged in an old hard drive today I have not used for a while to get some old photos from.  There are thousands on the drive, but I notice in finder than many of them display as .jpg icons in finder and not with an image of the photo.  To no surprise, they don't open either.  I think it might have been a problem with the drive they came from, but do have copies so not concerned.
Is there any quick way of deleting these thousands of non-working images from my hard drive to clear out the debris so I am only left with working photos.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

I whole-heartedly agree that although the big print giveth, sometimes the small print taketh away, DNG-wise.
I certainly would not convert my raw files to dng then throw away the originals. If Adobe provided a "revert from DNG" function, I'd recommend people give DNG a try (and not toss the originals), but as it stands:
(Adobe-converted) DNGs: great for limited, known, (usually Adobe-only) environments, but not for wholesale conversion of raws, not yet anyway (unless you don't mind locking yourself into an Adobe-only (or Adobe-mostly) software environment, in order to support "the cause").
PS - In my opinion, you may be going a little too far with this one:

"Adobe-only environments". Nope, sorry; that doesn't exist. Adobe makes software that runs on OSX and Windows.
I will bet $50 that buried in the OSX Lightroom code is reliance upon Quicktime. Adobe could rectify this. It's a lack of will, not technology.
I can be angry and upset but I will still use Lightroom because, in spite of this setback, LR produces DNGs that are smaller than TIFF and lossless PNG and produces better photos easier than other apps (including Aperture).
...and yes, I still believe Adobe's marketing is either fraudulent or just doesn't understand the technology.

  • Files won't display in finder after updating to Mavericks

Have upgraded to Mavericks. Went to finder found the folder I use daily opened it and there are no sub folders or files displaying. I have done a search, they are still on my mac. Obviously I don't remember all my file names so how do I display sub folders and files in finder now? Some advice/help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks I am  having issues!
Menu bar wont show anymore on desktop, I am not using anything, no application. Just turn on the mac and there you go, I have no Menu bar. It just shows for 3 seconds then goes away forever!
My files and folders same issue, they dissapears after 3 seconds!
At the log in window where you type your password to turn the computer, it will not let me type in, i have to click I dont know how many million times then it would let me!
I installed a game and the game window won't saty, it would kick me to desktop window after 3-4 seconds that i am in the game!
    and also Finder wont work!
    SO, LOTS OF ISSUES!
My question is, is there a way to fix these things, if not how do I go back to previous OS without losing anything on my mac?
Thank you so much for for your help....

  • My external drive won't display in Finder. Any suggestions?

I have a 500gb Verbatim external drive that I can't see in Finder. I've tried to restart, but with no luck. Any suggetions?

If you go into applications>utilities>disk utilities is it displayed there?
I have notice maybe since switching to Lion that if I put in a thumb drive or an external HD that is not formated it wont just pop up on the desktop or finder but is available in disk utilities then a quick format and it shows up.
Not sure if this will help but you didnt mention if the drive was brand new or not so its all I could think of.
Good luck if I find anything else I will post it back here.

  • I erased some unnecessary fonts and now my MacBook won't display any words/icons? Apps aren't working as well. Help!

I tried to fix it but I'm not sure how without seeing any apps/ words/ files

Well, that depends on which OS you are running; in any case you will need to reinstall your OS since the fonts are part of the system.
So, if you have an install disk, boot from it, and reinstall your OS. If you have Lion or newer, use recovery (Command + R during startup or restart) and choose to reinstall the OS.

  • LION - Finder - Icon view

The slider doesn't work - I get only one size of icon and that's large.  When I move the slider to make icons smaller it has no affect on them.

In addition, and perhaps better, you can set the View Options under the View Menu (shortcut = Command + J) while focused on the Finder and the Folder/Directory that you what to adjust.
That brings up a contextual dialog like this:
    Hope that helped!

  • Finder Icon View Magnification Slider Gone?

Hoping that I just can't locate the setting to turn this feature on, and that Apple did not "improve" the finder by doing away with it in Lion.
