Photos look blurry in Aperture (Unknown Lens)

Hello,
I see a strange behaviour in Apple's Aperture (latest version).
When I import new pictures, taken by a Samsung NX1000 and open the pic the first time it looks sharp.
After less than a second Aperture does something and I see the picture changes from sharp to blurry.
When I open the pic in Mac Finder the picture looks great.
Maybe it has something to do that Aperture does not recognize my lens?
I see that the camera model is correct but with "Unknown Lens"
Hope you can help.
- Attached you see a picture in Aperture (left), and the same pic opened from the Finder.
- The picture on the right is much better. How is this possible? I just import the pic without
any editing into Apreture and get the mess.
LEFT > Aperture --- RIGHT > Same pic opened in Finder on Mac, look way better.
Regards,
Marc

Hi Griff W!
What is the relationship between sharpening and un-adjusted Images in Aperture?  The article you cite says:
sharpening adjustments applied to the image may seem less apparent than they really are.
The OP specifies that the effect he is seeing precedes any adjustments made.  Are you implying that the article you cite includes the sharpening controls in the RAW Fine Tuning adjustment as part of its definition of "sharpening adjustments"?  This is important to know.  Thanks for your insight.

  • Photos Look blurry in the canvas when movie plays....CLEAR when I pause???

I am using BMP scanned picture files here, so first off I wanted to know if this is at all contributing to the problem?
I don't understand why the photo is blurrier when the movie plays, then gets clearer and more defined when i stop or pause the movie in the time line in the canvas????
Do i need a filter applied or is there something else i don't know about?
    Thanks in advance guys.
    -Mike

This problem used to dog me also when I first started on FCP.....but the moves on photos really do look crisp and smooth....
One way to check the quality of the phots (without an external monitor) is to export a portion of you sequence that has a photo in it as a quicktime movie. Then open and play that quicktime in the quicktime viewer.....you'll be able to see the quality and smoothness of the final product....
(Basically, when you see the quality of the photo in your fcp sequence (as it's paused), that's the quality you'll see once you export it and burn it to a dvd...)
    Enjoy.

  • Photos look blurry only when using Slideshow

When I select an iPhoto album to view as a slideshow the photos appear blurry during the slideshow. When not using slideshow, when I open individual photos in iPhoto6 they appear blurred for maybe 2 seconds before snapping into sharp. The thumbnails are fine (sharp). But the photos stayed blurred in Slideshow changing from one blurred photo to the next - in other words useless. The photos are jpgs. I have no problems with any blur at all in Photoshop CS2. I assume I have to change some setting but I can't find any reference to this in iPhoto help. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Dave,
On both my G4 and G5, I've encountered the same problem from time to time and here's the workaround that fixed it for me:
Apply a filter to the images. I use the 3-Way Color Corrector since many of the photos could stand a little tweaking for TV anyway. Render them and they should retain their original sharpness.
I have no idea what causes the problem, why it only affects some of the images and not all of them, nor do I know why re-rendering them after applying a filter works ... but it does for me.

ps: another symptom that this fix takes care of is when you see a small shift (1 or 2 pixels) in the image's position as it comes out of a transition.

When I play back jpeg photos from my timeline on my monitor, the pictures look a bit blurry, especially right at the end of my transition, such as a cross dissolve...When I stop the playhead on a jpeg, after about 1 second, the image becomes very sharp on the monitor...once I start playing again, the image becomes a bit blurry!

  • My still photos look blurry on burned iDvds

I've been trying to make a DVD of still photos. My DVD from iDVD is blurry when viewed. It's blurry wether I look at it on a TV or the computer, so it's not a screen quality issue. My photos are nice and clear on iDVD when making the disc, but the disc quality is horrible. Looking at the forums it seems that I'm not the only one with this issue, but all the suggestions either don't make sense to me or I can't make them work. It seems as though some have had success making an iMovie and then making a .mov file in HD, then dragging it into iDVD. I can't drag the .mov file into iDVD. I also cannot burn the .mov file to disc. I'm starting to hate Apple for telling me how intuitive my computer is. If it was so intuitive a computer dummy like me could figure it out. Very frustrated...

    Hi
I think that this have several reasons
    • No DVD can do the same quality as Your Mac Screen - NON. DVD is as standard SD-video and can not be any better.
    • Assemble SlideShows in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 then Send to iDVD - will make things even worse
    a. iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - can only deliver every second line to iDVD resulting in 50% loss
    b. Share to iDVD - makes iMovie to render and so bad - Better is to Share to Media Browser and from iDVD import from it's Media Browser - iDVD renders so much better
So to get best quality DVD is not the way - Blu-Ray or photos on a memory stick can be so much better or even projected directly from the Mac - will give best quality possibly
To get an as good DVD as possibly
    • Use a program that can do SlideShows and export them without any loss eg
◊ iMovie up to HD6 (previous versions)
    ◊ FinalCut any version
    ◊ FotoMagico™
    are what I use.
I let iDVD do the rendering
    I use Verbatim DVD-R disks
I set down burn speed to x4 (less burn errors and DVD works on more Players)

  • All photos look blurry

somehow while experimenting in iphoto all my pictures that were there now seem blurry?
Any way to just make them all back to original look.
Im also wondering if theres not a better mac program for just storing my photos ?
    Thanks

    Allan
What sort of experimenting have you been doing? Some things to check: look down right a the slider, play with that a little?
As to "just storing my photos": The Finder will store your files. What else do you want?

  • Why do my photos get blurry when they are enlarged to full screen from the disc I burn, or played on the t.v.?  I set the burn on the highest quality.  The photos don't look blurry when enlarged from iphoto on the computer.

Why do my photos that are transferred from iphoto to idvd, and then burned on DVD, look blurry when the idvd is shown full screen on computer or on t.v.  They don't look blurry when I enlarge the iphoto pics on the computer.  I used the 'prof. quality" encoding setting before burning, and before putting photos on idvd.

    Hi
DVD is as standard - only interlaced SD-Video (as on old CRT-TVs) and can never be any better than this.
This is less than a quarter of Your Mac screen resolution.
That's one part of Why You can see High res. on Your Mac - and not on DVD.
Next part is what program is used to make the SlideShow.
If You use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - to make it - it too degrades the final result as non of them can deliver interlaced SD-Video to iDVD but only half (every second line in the picture)
    I use
    • iMovie HD6 or
    • FinalCut (any version) or
    • FotoMagico™
As they all delivers 100% of what iDVD or Toast™ or DVD Studio Pro or Whatever needs.

  • Aperture make photos look bad!

    Hello,
I use the import and i have all photos in a library,
I click on a picture in the film strip the photo looks great for a few seconds. and it has a loading icon at the top of the preview picture then after its done the photo looks muddy crappy ect...
It does this for all pic in the film strip.
I was hoping uninstalling the program anf reinstalling it would help but it does not.
I also used anouther mac pro with apature on it and it DID not do a thing to the photos, and the photos look just like what i took.
    Thanks Ralph

Ralph, have you imported "Raw" images? What you are describing is very typical for Aperture creating new thumbnails and previews from the raw images, when it is loading the image for editing. Unitil you try to edit the image file, Aperture may be using the camera generated preview, that is showing all processing done by the camera, but the raw will not include any camera processing.
Have a look at this thread for a discussion of the differences between camera generated previews and Aperture's previews.

  • Aperture 3 - Lens unknown in RAW metadata

In Aperture 3 my lens information will only display data for one of my three lens. My 18-55mm kit lens for my Canon T2i is the only lens that shows up. My Zeiss 28mm just displays "Unknown (33) 28mm" and my Tokina 11-16mm displays "Unknown (160) 11-16mm." Does anyone know why this might be happening in Aperture?

With my Tokina 11-16 mm I had the same problem in JPEG metadata. I found a solution and wrote a little app: http://touristathome.tumblr.com/post/24342878728/unknown-lens-aperture

  • Look at what aperture is doing to my photos!

Please take a look at these images:
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geoff.k.lloyd/aperture.html
Since upgrading to aperture 1.1 it has done this with every photo i have! All the dark areas on my photos look like this! you can see an original file and an aperture screenshot of the dog picture to really see the difference. Does anyone know how to solve this im desperate now!

If it isn't on, then there actually is a bug in the
10.4.6 update that seems to cause something like
    this, although less severe.
I'm being hit by this bug big time. It's not less severe, it's more severe and it renders Aperture worthless for me.
I've sent a few samples to Apple.
After having played with v1.1 I thought I would process an assignment from Wednesday in Aperture (~900 images) but this bug caused me to give up.
Opening images into Photoshop shows that they are fine but with the images in Aperture off so much - there's no way I can edit images, tweak the parameters, because the previews aren't close to accurate.
The click white balance bug can be worked around but this can't be. You can't open every image into Photoshop to confirm how it looks.
I'm not trying to be overly dramatic or sensationalistic but... Apple, you are really testing professional photographers' patience to the extreme. v1 is sub-par, v1.1 is touted as being the re-launch we were waiting for but it too is sub-par and Aperture is still not usable.

  • Photos on Wordpress Blog look blurry on iPad or Iphone? Why is that?

    Hi,
Is there any reason why the images on blogs I post look blurry when I look at them on an iPhone or an iPad?
They look perfect on a PC or Mac but opened on an iPhone or an iPad they look low res.
Is there any specific way I need to save them before I upload them into the blog?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you!

I hear what you're saying but I'm not sure how that will effect apps. I can see that my music downloads are not showing but my Apps seem to be in place.
I tried to sign in with the old ID but the last password didn't work. I requested a reset but the email with the reset link never arrived. What must I do in a case like that.
PS - I figured out how to sign out manually and I can now connect to the new ID on all my devices. I just need to get the old ID working again.

  • EXIF Tag problem / unknown lens

    Hi everyone,
I imported a few raw files in lightroom 3.4.1 (mac version, but this is irrelevant), all of them are from Sony cameras and different lenses.
From the command line, exiftool always reports the correct camera model/lens, but lightroom often does not.
From the exiftool documentation, it seems that Sony has a specific EXIF tag for the lens model, called "LensID".
However when LR generates the xmp, it does write some lens information in it, but I cannot understand where it reads from.
For example, I run a sample query on a raw file, which LR correctly identifies, asking all possible lens-related fields:
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.ARW
    Lens ID                         : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens Type                     : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
and in the corresponding xmp file I have:
      <aux:Lens>DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA</aux:Lens>
      <aux:LensID>46</aux:LensID>
and if I query directly the xmp file (which exiftool can do):
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.xmp
    Lens                            : DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens ID                        : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
So, the LR-generated "Lens" field in xmp is a *different* string.
If I repeat the same procedure on some different raw files (from different sony cameras), I get different results: most times the xmp contains no lens field, and LR says "unknown lens", even if the ARW does contain the same information shown above.
If I manually fix the xmp with exiftool and I force LR to reload metadata from files, then I get the lens identified.
Is it possible to fix this situation somehow?

In my opinion, it is not possible to get a reliable lens identification with Sony/Minolta cameras unless you have a lens lookup list which fits your actual lens collection. So that means that you either have to buy lenses which fits the lookup list in your identification tool, or use an identification tool which allows you to modify the lookup list. The latter option excludes using Lightroom for lens identification, as far as I know. I don't know about exiftool.
Old Minolta IDs have been reused by Sony when they released similar lenses, which I guess is acceptable but can result in Sony lenses being recognized as Minolta or vice versa. Even worse is that third party lens makers have released a lot of lenses where they use a more or less random ID from the Minolta lenses.
Here is an example of lenses using ID 25611:
    Minolta AF 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro
Sigma AF 300mm F4 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO
Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Asph
    Tokina AT-X AF 300mm F4
    Tokina AT-X AF 400mm F5.6 SD
    Tokina AF 730 II 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F7.2 APO
(And now I just discovered that this list is incomplete, since the exiftool link posted by ixtab alos lists an ID 25611 Sigma 800 mm which is not in my list.)
To some extent, the correct lens can be picked from the list if combining ID, max. aperture and focal length from the EXIF. If ID is 25611, max. aperture is 4.5, and focal length is 500, it can only be a Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO.
But if ID is 25611, max. aperture is 5.6, and focal length is 300, there are actually 4-5 different lenses which match. With a little luck you only own one of those lenses and can give that lens the highest priority in the lookup list. That is why it is so important to be able to modify the lookup list.
I use a command line tool called alphalensinfo which does just that: Uses the combination of ID, max. aperture and focal length and allows you to modify the lookup list. The information is written into an .xmp file which is imported with the image into Lightroom.
I know that exiftool can do something similar, as stated earlier in the thread, but I have no experience with using it for this purpose (even though I actually do use exiftool in the same batch process to rectify the Orientation tag of the photos).
