Photos missing thumbnails

After installing Yosemite 10.10.3 and the Photos application, my iPhoto library was migrated to Photos. Now, when viewing photos (in Photos), I notice several thumbnails of the photos are missing. The photos can be viewed, and look normal in edit view, but in the photos view these photos appear blank, as if the thumbnails are missing.
How can I rebuild the Photos library or the thumbnails without exporting and then re-importing these items individually? (That works but there are over 100 of these items.)
Thanks.

I too ran into this issue.  I discovered that the photos without thumbnails were photos that I had not actually imported into the iPhoto library - they were simply 'pointers' to the actual file that resided in a sub-folder in Pictures, which I had deleted from the hard drive some time ago.  Most of my photos were imported into the library, but I didn't when I first got my Mac.  It seemed a waste of space to have a duplicate photo inside the library, when I had the original already in place (this was before I understood what I was doing )
I was able to restore the original files, then I used the Command and Option function.  I don't know if Photos prompted you, but I did get prompted to give it access to my media - that's when it tried to locate the original files but couldn't.  After restoring them from backup, I wasn't prompted any more - and the thumbnails appeared.  I don't know why they didn't show up for the photos that I did import into the library, though; seems to stop generating them at all if it can't find the originals.
I don't really know if this will be helpful or not, but I thought I'd at least share what I found helped in my case.

  • After a rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for RAW images.

    Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day. This time was different though - after the rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for all RAW images (Canon). Images from other cameras and jpegs are all fine. Only the events with Canon RAW images have no thumbnails.
    I am rebuilding the thumbnails once again but has anyone else seen this issue? Losing thumbnails to RAW images during a rebuild?

    Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day.
    There is no need to do this. It doesn't achieve anything.
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Photo and thumbnail missing

    I have some old photos that are showing up black, (this happened to them a few versions ago). Is there a way to recover these photos, all the information seems to be ok, just no image.

    I also just upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2 and have OS X 10.6.7.
    I found this thread because I am missing about a month's worth of photos.  Specifically, the last major upload I did from my camera before I did the iPhoto upgrade.  (Where it asked if it's ok to update the iPhoto database, making it incompatible with older versions of iPhoto.)
    Anyways, I am missing the photos and thumbnails.  If I go to iPhoto and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original, it tries to pull up Time Machine.
    If I just use Finder to search on the missing photos by file name(I can display the photo meta tags, along with the event names such as my daughter's 5th birthday) then Finder will show the file, with correct date, but as soon as I click on it, it launches iPhoto, and it jumps to a different picture with the same file name (but taken on a
    different date)
    Now get this, this is really bizarre.  Back toiPhoto.  If I scroll slowly through the missing photos, I just see the empty box instead of thumbnails.  But if I scroll quickly, it flashes the thumbnail of the correct photos, but as the scrolling stops, the thumbnails turn back to empty boxes.  For example, I can see the images of my daughter's 5th birthday flash by as I scroll through photos quickly, but as soon as I stop scrolling, the thumbnails and photos are back to their missing status.
    When I first upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2, I noticed that certain cropped photos I had were missing.  And the currently missing photos were displayed fine.  (At least, the thumbnails were...)  It was only after I kept on clicking around on the missing cropped photos, trying to display the meta tags and additional info, trying to open up the full size pictures and scroll through the photos, that I noticed that suddenly about a month's worth of photos were no longer visible.
    I have not yet reverted my iPhoto via Time Machine, but I figured I'd ask around before doing so.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Some photos missing since Time Machine restore...

    Hi All,
    I have been looking through the forum to find an answer to this, but I haven't seen anyone else with this exact problem.
    2009 iMac, Snow Leopard
    I had to erase my drive and do a clean install. That went well, and I used Time Machine, and Migration assistant to bring all of my users, docs and media back in.
    When I open iPhoto some of the thumbnails in the events browser are missing. Just a gray box. If I double click the Event, a window opens and I can see the thumbnails of the photos in that event. If I click on one of the thumbnails, I get the white exclamation point.
    It get's weirder...
    All the photos that are missing seem to be ones taken with our iPhones. Not every photo from the iPhones is missing however, only some, mostly recent, but a couple of 2008 events too, just to further confuse things . All the photos we imported from our regular camera are all still there.
    It gets weirder...
    When I first open iPhoto, if I quickly scroll down in the events browser to the area of missing thumbnails, I can see all of the thumbnails for a brief moment, then they disappear. This doesn't happen every time, only occasionally.
    If I hover over the gray event boxes, the pop up still tells me the date and number of photos in the event. Those numbers match the number of thumbs in the event when I double click, but I just can't open the photo.
    I have tried rebuilding the thumbnails and searching for orphaned photos.
    I have not tried rebuilding from the auto backup, because I recently restored the whole system and didn't know if I still had a "good" auto back-up and didn't want to inadvertently screw things up further...
    I am really at a loss here and would appreciate any suggestions...
    Thanks in advance!

    The exclamation point is an indication that the library has lost the link to the original file. Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #4,5 and 6.
    Fix #2
    Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
    Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
    4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    5 - Click on the Create button.
    Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
    Fix #3
    Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
    Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
    This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

  • Missing Thumbnail Fix, at least for me

    I had an extremely frustrating issue with missing thumbnails (dotted blank boxes) with iPhoto 6 that migrated to iPhoto 8 with no relief. I tried all the thumbnail and library rebuilding, and permission repair issues to no avail.
    In my case, the original images were fine - if I double clicked on an image, it would open fine in iPhoto - right-clicking to reveal the original in the Finder worked fine too. But for about 100 photos, no thumbnails.
    I finally discovered that if I edited the image in some minor way, the thumbnail would rebuild. The easiest was to rotate the image (selecting multiple worked as well), and then undoing the rotation. I don't know what caused the issue to begin with, but this action fixed the issue in a way the built-in rebuilding option could not do.
    Hope this helps.

    Tom:
    To help prevent loss like you experienced see the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Random sequential groups of photos missing from Events and iPhoto Slideshow but are in an Album. How do I recover or copy photos back to Events and rebuild slideshow?

    Random sequential groups of photos missing from Events, an Album I created, and a slideshow using the photos. This "appears" to have happened when upgrading to Yosemite. When I use iPhoto Library Manager, I see two entries for the Event Information for the date in question, same name, same number of photos, but different sizes. The smaller has the image number but no photo for the given date; the larger has the photos.
    Image path for the version with all photos: /Volumes/Promise Pegasus/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Previews/2010/2010_05_24/IMG_0697.jpg
    Image path for the version with missing photos: /Volumes/Promise Pegasus/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Previews/2010/2010_05_24_2/IMG_0697.jpg (NOTE the _2 added to the image number.)
    I assume that I have to get the missing pictures back in Events so I can reload back into the Album. Hopefully, the slideshow will magically be better.
    Help!

    That's an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and the master file has been broken.  Do the following:
    1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • "any" help out there for missing thumbnails???

    I looked for archives of this problem out on the internet and have had no luck with the solutions of finding files "thumb.5". I am missing thumbnails from over 6000 pictures. Each time I pick a block of pictures to "update thumnails" , it actually takes away the few thumnails that are there.
    I installed 5.0 on Vista 3 months ago, and everything was fine. All of a sudden, all I see is the hourglass (which basically renders the program useless)
    If no one has any fix, do you know who I can contact at Adobe or a customer support number ... they hide that stuff pretty well in their website.

    Chuck,
    I am running Windows XP rather than Vista so I hesitate to predict a folder structure under Vista. And I have always kept my catalog name the same at the time of the Restore.
    I know that a friend verified for me that when he took a PSE 5 Backup done under Windows XP and then used that backup to do a Restore on a Vista machine running PSE 5.0.2, it restored correctly to the Pictures folder structure.
    Running under XP and PSE 5,if I choose
    b Folder Location view
    (pull down box lower left below thumbnails) and then Right Click on the Name of one of the folders which contains photos in this catalog, the right click menu has a choice to
    b Rename Folder
    . (Note: in my case that specific folder had no subfolders).
    I did that Rename Folder in PSE and then subsequently checked in Windows Explorer to find that the folder had actually been renamed. So that seems that it might be a possibility. However, I highly recommend that you do your own test using a folder containing less significant photos.
    And I recommend that you 1)do a File > Catalog > Recover before you do this renamimg in order to cleanup and compact your catalog. 2) Then also before you rename, use Windows Explorer to just copy your Catalog file to save an extra copy somewhere. 3) After you are finished this renaming and verified that it is OK. do the File > Catalog > Recover again and then perhaps do a new PSE Backup (or however you normally backup).

  • IPhoto 08 - Photos missing

    I just realized many of my photo in my default album show as missing. When I open my iPhoto library in finder I find all the photo missing but aliases in the folders. Can anyone give me an idea what may have happened?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Brightongal
    The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
    Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
    In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
    Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
    Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
    When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
    In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Photo Gallery thumbnails in business catalyst render in different sizes in different browsers

    Photo Gallery thumbnails in business catalyst render in different sizes in safari and chrome but are fine in firefox. What is the issue with Safari? I have tried the different algorithm options such as fill_proportional etc and firefox is the only browser that displays correctly. I thought safari was the most standards compatible browser - what's the problem here?

    Hi,
    If you have seperate XML file but with the same basic structure then you can change the XML a Spry dataset refers to and regenerate the spry region without reloading the full page.
    So on my photo gallery page I can change the album the photos are shown from via the seturl sprydata function as below.  dsPhotos being my Spry dataset that points to the relevant XML dataset with my image references and captions etc.  My XML is actually dynamically generated from Picasa RSS feeds (and RSS feeds are XML) but the principle will be the same with your static XML.
    First I add an event listener for when someone clicks on an album (the li tag within my div with the id "albums" holds a photo and title for each album.)
    function Albums()
    var myalbums = Spry.$$("#albums li", "TabbedPanels1")
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var setListener = function( element, value )
      Spry.Utils.addEventListener( element, "click", function(){ showAlbum( value ); },false );
    for( var i = 0, length = myalbums.length; i < length; i++ )
      setListener( myalbums[i], i );
    Then this is the code which changes the photo album to be shown. (when the user clicks the relevant album)
    function showAlbum(i)
    pauseShow();
    pImage = 'No';
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var albumid = rows[i]["albumid"];
    var url = "xml/PicasaAphotoFeed.asp?albumid=" + albumid;
    dsPhotos.setURL(url);
    dsPhotos.loadData();
    var rowcount = dsAlbums.getRowCount() - 1;
    var nextalbum;
    var navnext;
    var n;
    The page is here www.thehmc.co.uk/photo5.html is you want to see it in context.
    In your case showAlbum would switch between Frank.xml or Wolfie.xml depending on how you decide to name your xml datasets.
    Regards
    Phil

  • Missing Thumbnails in CS5 bridge

    I just got Photoshop CS5 and for the first time decided to use Bridge that comes with Photoshop. My problem is that Bridge doesn't show thumbnails for all my files. Some folders of images have a few thumbnails missing, other folders have a lot of thumbnails missing. One of my folders have over half of the image thumbnails missing. An icon shows up instead. I can still double click these icons to open the image in Photoshop but I can't see the image in advance of opening it. I found a whole lot of info on the adobe web site concerning thumbnails in a lot of various products. But nothing seemed to match what I'm experiencing. In fact a lot that I read leaves me more confused. Anyone else having this problem and have an answer?

    90% jpg
    Some NEF and some TIFF. None of those have missing thumbnails, but then I don't have very many of each.
    Just got an upgrade to Bridge this morning, version 4.0.5.11. After it installed I checked for a change in the thumbnail problem. No fix.
    ACR is version 6.4.1.145

  • How to see all photos as thumbnails

    How do I view my photos as thumbnails in Preview or anywhere else, at the moment I can see some as thumbnails but most as JPEG generic icons.
    thanks,
    Michael (10.3.9)

    It must still be iPhoto v2 on your PMG4, horrendously unstable. But you should still never lose photos, iPhoto will never change or delete original photos unless you tell it to.
    It may also help if you set the iPhoto preference NOT to copy the photos to the photo library when importing into iPhoto. This means you'll need a directory structure that you can keep your photos in, somewhere that's easy to backup.
    Then import these into iPhoto, all that gets created in your iPhoto Library (in your Home folder) is the thumbnails and any photos edited in iPhoto. Again, the originals are untouched if you edit in iPhoto.
    However, forget iPhoto v2 altogether if you have pictures in the thousands - I've been digital since 1996 so I had too many for my first version.

  • New Photos App - Thumbnails on edge or not shown correctly

    Hi,
    after upgrading from iPhotos to Photos Version 1.0 (209.52.0), all my pictures that have been taken on edge are not shown correctly in thumbnail size.
    When double clicking one of it they are visualized correctly but the thumbnail is still wrong.
    The Problem is being fixed when rotating the thumbnail photo for and back on the overview page.
    The picture have been taken by a Sony Alpha 500
    Hope this gets fixed.
    regards
    christian

    In case anyone else has this issue...
    It appears that Photos is "fixing" these photos by itself.
    I have left Photos open all day (about 12 hours now), and now there are no more photos without thumbnails (that I could find anyway).
    There are still LOTS of photos that have fuzzy or improperly rotated photos, but I wonder if Photos is correcting these as well. I think I will leave the program open for another 12-24 hours and see what happens.
