Photos not importing correctly to iPhoto library

I just realized that any photos I have been importing to the iPhoto library from somewhere on my hard drive rather than from an external device/camera have NOT actually been imported into the library, rather are still linked to the original file. This means that iPhoto can't always find the correct pathway to the correct file -- and it has backfired on me big time in that I ordered a $50 book and one of the images was wrong. Right thumbnail, but wrong actual photo, because the link had been lost. Beyond the aggravation that my book is now messed up and I apparently can't do anything about it since it's been more than 90 minutes, I want to fix this so that my iPhoto library is accurate and it doesn't happen again. I have been going to File - Import to Library, but it doesn't. It just links to the original file, which then can't be found once I reopen the program after quitting. Any advice? This only started happening since upgrading to '09, by the way.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • Iphoto: find photos not imported in the iPhoto Library

    Hello
I've got this message from iPhoto since few days, trying to repair the DB with no success, any idea ??
In English : Photos not imported are find in the iPhoto library.
I've also tried this terminal command to optimze the DB for dbase in *.db; do sqlite3 $dbase "vacuum;"; done but no success.
    Thanks for your feedback

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • ICloud photos not showing in my iPhoto library

I'm really having trouble understanding the relationship among iPhoto, iCloud, and Photo Streams.  I want to have all my photos show up in my iPhoto library.  They always did.  However, a few weeks ago (while traveling and adding a lot of photos), I began to not see all my photos in my library.  In fact, when I look at "Events" there are greyed out boxes that have the date photos were taken, it indicates that there are 0 photos, and there is a shades-of-grey icon that has a palm tree and horizon.  I had never seen this before.  Some of my photos from my travel ended up in my library just fine.  Others are in limbo.  I found the others in My Photo Stream, but I can't figure out how to add them to the library, where they belong.
When I show Package Contents from Home>Pictures>iPhoto Library, all the pictures are there.  They are just not showing up in iPhoto.  I have quit and restarted iPhoto.  Do you think my iPhoto app is corrupt?
Any suggestions would be welcome.  This is vexing...

Hold down Command and Option, and launch iPhoto. A Photo Library First Aid window will appear. In this window you’ll see a number of repair options. Start with Rebuild Thumbnails and give it a try. Check iPhoto after you’ve done this to see how it behaves. If it’s not showing all your photos, give the next option in the Rebuild window a try. Rinse and repeat until iPhoto is working properly.
Make sure you have a backup of your Library as a precaution.

  • Places not imported correctly from iPhoto into Aperture 3

    Hello,
I'm a first time mac user and have recently installed Aperture 3. I already had an iPhoto library setup with all my events metadata filled out, including faces, places and event descriptions.
Upon importing my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, the faces were copied over, but none of the places or event descriptions were imported.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Is there a way to pull this across after the import, or should I just delete the aperture library and try again. Ideally, I'd like to avoid having to manually add all this information again!
Thanks in advance for your help.

This is not what I found to be the case in a recent experiment using iPhoto11- I did repeat it to be sure.

Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.

  • RAW files not importing correctly into iPhoto

I'm having problems importing .CR2 files into iPhoto. This didn't used to happen with Tiger, so I'm trying to figure out what the issue is. I'm using iPhoto 7.1.1 (354) with Leopard 10.5.1. I previously had 10.4.8.
I'm wondering if it's an issue with networking. Currently, my iPhoto Library is on a NAS because it's big (about 86GB) and I have RAID redundancy on the NAS. The original files are fine, but the imported files (not just the thumbnails) are corrupted. If there's a problem with data transmission, would that show as a data corruption?

    Michael
I don't have a NAS myself and my ignorance of it and networking one is pretty much total. However, this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1100543&tstart=0
records a discovery by one user using a similar system. It has to do with iPhoto using ':' for temp files and folders, and Samba having a problem with the character.
    Hope that helps.

  • Monochromatic Canon RAW pictures not imported correctly in iPhoto?

The Canon cameras have a setting to create only a RAW format of a picture (no jpg is created). I'm able to import the picture into iPhoto but the original custom settings are lost. For example, I took pictures on the programmed mode on monochromatic but the pictures are imported chromatic so the B&W effect is lost. The thumbnails in Finder do show the B&W picture for the RAW files.
How do import these RAW files so the iPhoto creates a jpg with the original settings (monochromatic) ?

There's no such thing as a monochromatic Raw. A Raw is a sensor dump from the camera. Your camera has an RGB sensor and shoots everything in colour.
What the mono setting does on your camera affects only jpegs. What you're seeing in the Finder is the Jpeg preview built-in to the Raw as an icon.
So, put simply, if you want to shoot B&W, shoot jpeg.

  • When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop.. won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not... need to fix this

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not

If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow.  However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

Hopefully someone can help me with my question.  When I try to add photos from PhotoStream into my iPhoto Library a message appears asking to view the photo in the library (as if it were already imported).  When I click View it brings me to my iPhoto library but the photo(s) are not there?

When I try to add photos from PhotoStream into my iPhoto Library a message appears asking to view the photo in the library (as if it were already imported).
How exacly are you trying to import from the Photo Stream? Dragging from the stream to the events? Ctrl-clicking or right clicking?
If "Show in Library" does not show the event, then your iPhoto Library may need repairing or rebuilding;  try to run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools, if you have not already done so. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it:    Rebuild iPhoto Library Version 11:

  • Iphoto 9.5 won't import photos from iPhoto 7.5.  Library will not update using the iPhoto library upgraded application.

iphoto 9.5 won't import photos from iPhoto 7.5.  Library will not update using the iPhoto library upgrader application.  Repeatedly says it can't locate photos even when told to cancel.  I think the photos in question are in Nikon RAW format.

iPhoto 9.5 immediately tries to "upgrade" my library using the upgrader.
iPhoto 9.5 asks you to run the upgrader to prepare the library for 9.5. It then will update the library to its format.
You need to do the following:
1 - go to your Applications/Utilities folder and double click on the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application.
2 - select Choose Library, navigate to your iPhoto library, select it and let the upgrader do its thing.
3 - launch iPhoto 9.5 to open and finish the conversion of the library.

  • "Photos have been found in iPhoto library that were not imported" .. There's no Import Folder to delete

Please read the entire post prior to giving a response.
Our 2011 MBP has had this problem for a while.  15 photos have been found in iPhoto library that were not imported (twice .. every time).  I've seen several posts that all have the same answer .. find the import folder in iPhoto, remove it and all will be fine with the world.  Some say, it's importing folder, some say auto import folder, but all say it's a folder.  Problem is, there is no such folder.  I've looked throughout the computer .. applications, iPhoto, right click to show package contents, searched and searched .. nada.  NO such folder exists.  There are quite a number of files labeled "ImportPanels.nib" and "SelectiveImport.nib" all under "Other".  There are also a number of import.tiff files with various names under "Preview".  But NO folder with IMPORT in the name.
So, how do I get rid of the never ending 15 photos have been found in iPhoto library that were not imported?  Help that doesn't repeat what's already been noted above in other posts would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
(BTW .. it has Mavericks installed and everything is currently updated.)

I have no idea where you are looking.  I have nothing even similar to that.  When I go to Finder and click on Applications and then right click iPhoto (not iPhoto Library .. I have nothing with that name) and click on Show Package Contents, I have just one folder "Contents".  That opens to _CodeSignature, _MASReceipt, Frameworks, Library, MacOS, Plugins, Recurces and XPCServices .. no other folder exist.
(I have show .. iMovie, iMovie 9.0.9, iPhoto, iTunes, iWork '09, Keynote, etc ..  No iPhoto Library Folder is listed.)
If I go to Launchpad and right click the iPhoto icon, it opens iPhoto.  You say not the application, but I have no idea were else to find this other than Finder which is only the iPhoto application and the icon in Launchpad and the Dock.
When I click the Library folder, the only folder is Loginterms which opens to iCloud Photos.
There isn't any folder names Auto Import or anything close.  Searches don't help as they only find files, not folder names.
In your picture, it shows iPhoto Library as the header .. mine never shows that, it's always the folder name.
Where is the iPhoto Library Package?

  • Maximum number of photos that can be imported into an iPhoto library?

    1. Does iPhoto have a maximum number of files or photos that it can handle in a single library?
I have a lot of photos (20GB) that have not yet been imported into an iPhoto Library. I am going to set up a new library with the iPhoto Library Manager (iPLM), but am wondering if there is a maximum number of files that can be handled in a single library?
    2. Also, I don't think I want to import these, since that would create an iPhoto library as large as the source files. Are there any problems if I set up the preferences so that this library will not have the graphics imported into it?
    3. With iPLM, can you have different sets of preferences for each library?
Thank you for any advice or suggestions.

    1. Does iPhoto have a maximum number of files or photos that it can handle in a single library?
Apple advertises that iPhoto will handle 250,000 photos - I doubt that anyone has come close to that (or will)
I have 19,278 in 237 events - 22 GB - on a G5 iMac and it is snappy with no issues

It is a choice - if you do NOT import them then you will be responsible for all future management - deleting, etc. Moving to a different location or computer is much more difficult if you reference your photos instead of importing them.
Many people import them, burn the original source photos to CD or DVD and delete them from their disk letting iPhoto manage them
    3. With iPLM, can you have different sets of preferences for each library?
I'm not sure but I do not think so

  • Not all of my Photostream photos show up in the iPhoto Library

I have my iPhone WiFi-enabled so that photos are usually uploaded automatically to my iMac before I sync. They show up in Photostream but not all the photos show up in the iPhoto Library. When I go to edit one in Photostream, it takes me to a copy in the Library, but that's the only way I can locate it in the library - the missing photos don't show up in either Events or Photos.
I'm concerned that I'm losing some shots as Photostream rotates thru the most recent 1000 pics.
I'm on recent Mac OS and iOS, and have had Photostream enabled for almost a year...

Check the sort options in the Events mode.  Sort by Date - descending so the newest events will be at the top of the window. There's be a single event for each month titled like htis: Mar 2014 Photo Stream.  All new photos added to the Photo Stream from your mobile devices in March will be imported into that event.
You can try the following to "jump start" the Photo Stream:
Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Stream preference pane.
    Reboot and reenable both respectively.

  • IPhoto doesn't import after moving iPhoto library back to original (?) spot

    Hello:
Because I needed space on my original drive, I moved iPhoto library to another drive and then moved it back. iPhoto works perfectly well - It automatically loads my photos. But - when I attempt to import from my Canon Digital Rebel, it won't do it, giving a message that these files (all 7 photos in the camera) may be corrupt.
However - the photos do import correctly on my wife's Mac.
I am thinking that I did not put the iPhoto library back in exactly the right spot.
    Where should it go?
Oh - and Happy New Year!

    Hi Iann,
There is really no right spoet as you can place the iPhoto Library folder almost anywhere in your Users folder. The Pictures folder is the default location for the folder.
What I need to know is, when you moved the library to another spot, did you open iPhoto when it was there? And when you moved back to the original spot, did iPhoto open?
When you move the iPhoto Library folder, you must then launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed. iPhoto will then tell you that it can't find the library , and do you want to open another one or create a new one. You must then choose to open another one and navigate to where you moved it, then highlight it in the window, then click "open"
