Photos on a network drive

Hi,
I have over 10gb of photos on my Network Hard drive at home. I recently bought my first Macbook.
When I opened iPhoto, I dragged 1 folder to iPhoto and it worked great. Then I realized that my photos were copied from the network drive to my macbook.
Is there a way to keep the photos on the network drive and to have iPhoto read them directly from the network without having to copy them on my macbook? (I want to save space on my macbook)
If not, can this be done if I purchase an external hard drive and plug it via usb/Thunderbolt and put all my photos on it?!
Thank you for your help !

Yes but don't. It's unreliable.
For more on iPhoto and file management see this User Tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6361

Yes.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Windows 8.1 Photos app doesn't display photos from Home Server V1 network drive

I have my photos stored on a Home Server V1 network drive (\\homeserver\photos) and I have added the drive to the Pictures library. When I open the library in desktop Explorer I can see all the photos
and my Photos live tile shows photos from the network drive. When I open the Photos app I can see all the folders. However, when I open a folder I get the message 'There are no files or folders in this view.'
    Any help is appreciated.
I am running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Adding another voice to this - I hit exactly the same issue myself yesterday.  I haven't got the device with me now, but as the original poster says:
I have \\server\photos mapped to my p:\ drive in Windows 8.1, and this is in my pictures library.
The p:\ drive has many (100s) subfolders, which I can browse using Windows explorer and desktop apps like Picasa.
When I start the "photos" app, I see all my folders (each with a thumbnail picture), but when I click into a folder I just get the "There are no files or folders in this view".
It's probably worth saying that as this is Home Server v1, I had a bit of fun and games to get permissions right to access the share:
I log into Windows 8.1 (on a Surface Pro 3) using my Microsoft account
I've mapped the home server photo drive to "P:\" on my SP3; when I did this I provided the admin user ID and password for the home server and told windows to remember the credentials.
I added p:\ to my pictures library in Windows 8.1 on the SP3.
FWIW - I use a similar mechanism to add music from my home server to my music library, but the XBox Music app seems to be able to see individual tracks OK.
    Any ideas?

  • Using Front Row to view photos stored on a network drive.

    Good evening.
I am setting up all my files on a network drive. I've got Front Row "seeing" my movies on the drive and my music too.
What I'm looking to do is have it "see" my photos. Here is what I would like to do if possible:
I have my photos on the network drive in a Photo directory. In this directory are several sub-directories listing events, i.e., Xmas 2005, Weddings, etc.. How do I get iPhoto to get these photos and keep them in the same directory structure that I have set up so I can choose which photos to veiw? Also, as I add more photos to the network drive, how can I get iPhoto to automatically bring them in with no intervention (similar to the way new movies show up in the Movie Alias folder when they are added to the network drive).
    Thanks.

Well you can partially do what you want. In iPhoto there is now an option to not copy photos into it so it will just generate links to the originals instead when you drag that photo folder into iPhoto.
However, there is no support for automatically detecting/adding new content.
One option would be to create an automator workflow that would add a photo to iPhoto and create a watch folder on each subfolder in your Photos directory. When new photos are dragged into that folder, the automator workflow would get launched with the input being the photos in question. Then the workflow would add the new photos to iPhoto and you'd be all set...

  • Watch Network Drive

I am using PE 4.0 to manage a large connection of photographs which are located on a network drive. I have mapped the folder which contains the photos as my drive S:
I can easily import photos from the drive into the organizer with get photos, browse for location.
However, when I try to specify that folder to be watched for new photos, Organizer finds the folder with ease (My computer/click on drive, click on folder) and the name of the folder appears in the Add watched folder list. Then when I click on OK, the following message appears:
The Watch Folder Service returned an error. The system cannot find the path specified.
I tried going through My Network Places rather than My Computer, which produced a different error message:
The Watch Folder service returned an error: Access is denied.
I am the Administrator for the system, and can easily see, delete, add, rename and all other things to the folder in question, so it seems unlikely that the system is denying me access...perhaps XP is smart enough to know it is not me but PE which is requesting access.
    Any ideas will be appreciated.

I suppose it would work: to test it, just create a new catalog from the catalog manager, and test the import of test pictures from the network drive.
If that works, you can save a lot of rating/tagging work by 'Writing metadata to files' (men /file shortcut Ctrl W) and save your categories and tags hierarchy in a small text file. Click on the small triangle next to the green + sign to have the dropdown menu.
When you import in a new catalog, the tags will be retained. The imported keywords will be found in a new category : 'Imported keywords'. Your job will be to move the tags to the correct category in the tags panel. You only have to deal with the tags, not the files themselves.

When I try to import the files i get an error "The volume for "@#!@#" cannot be found....Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again." The drive is accessable from the mac, and is on the desktop, and if I keep hitting 'cancel' for the error message about 8 times the photo loads.

I've had similar problems, I'll see if this advanced setting thing will help. My objective is to have my "Master iLibrary" on an external hard drive connected to a new airport extreme wireless network in my house. Then all three household laptops can access our extensive ilibrary without using hard drive space on the laptops, and wirelessly to boot. In addition I want to be able to connect all three ipods (and hopefully an iphone come June:) to any one of the three laptops to access this very large music library (50GB). It seems to me that by trying to protect copyright for the artist the honest end consumer gets hosed. I can't seem to get the album art for many of my songs seemingly because of my unwillingness to re-import hundreds and hundreds of CDs that I have boxed up in the attic. The album art isn't anything more than an issue of asthetics where as deleteing ten thousand songtitles when itunes repopulates my library is enough to make a laptop grow wings and fly across the room. I hope that technology heads toward more continuity for music junkies. I've been trying to find the right device, software and format for my extensive collection of music. I started with musicmatch jukebox and got agrivated then used WMP out of forced convinience. Now I have moved to itunes because apple "seems" to be developing what the consumer wants instead of telling the consumer what they are going to get. I haven't even begun to convert my cassettes, vinyl, or 8 tracks. That is a nightmare waiting in the wings. Anyone with advice in the way of a turnkey operation for my planned setup? I believe that what I am trying to do is very likely the desire of most consumers. If Apple gets this worked out and user friendly I'd bet they'll take over the majority marketshare as fast as they can handle it if not faster.

  • Can't upgrade catalog from Elements 8 -thinks photos are on backup drive...

I've just bought LR3 (and upgraded to latest 3.2 release), and now I want to import all my photos from my Elements 5 collection (just over 10,000 photos - mostly RAW). All the photos are actually stored on a network share from my Windows Home Server machine, all accessible as \\home-server\photos\. Elements 5 has no problems with accessing them this way, and I can also access them fine from Lightroom, but I obviously want to retain all my keywording.
As there doesn't appear to be any way to upgrade a PSE5 catalog to LR3, I followed a recommendation I found on this forum (I think), and have downloaded a trial of PSE8. I have successfully upgraded a copy of the PSE5 catalog to PSE8 format, and then view them all in PSE8, so step one is a success. When I launched LR3, it then gave me a new option to upgrade an Elements catalog - this was a step forward. So, I took the option to upgrade the PSE8 catalog to LR, but after attempting it I see a window that says:
"Lightroom has successfully upgraded one Photoshop Elements catalog photo, but was unable to upgrade 10729 additional photos because the photos were moved to inaccessible Photoshop Elements backup drives. If you wish to manage the Photoshop Elements backup photos in Lightroom, please use Lightroom to import images from the following Photoshop Elements backup discs."
The photos are most definitely not on "backup drives". I've never backed up photos from Elements (my backups are done separately from my Home Server). Lightroom can see the relevant shares, as I've imported a few photos directly onto that share from a card reader, and have also imported some photos on there in a "leave in place", but (as they are RAWs) I don't get any keywording this way.
I'd be most grateful for any suggestions, especially as I won't be able to do anything in PSE8 when my trial runs out....

Thanks for that - that certainly agrees with my findings so far.
Do I take it you've had this confirmed by someone from Adobe then? Is it an intended limitation, or just an acknowledged bug?
I really hope it isn't an intended limitation, as it would mean that this high cost professional-targeted app (LR3) is not capable of something that the consumer level one (PSE8) does with ease. Surely it isn't that unusual to store your photos on a network drive.....
If this isn't likely to be fixed soon I guess I'll have to :
Backup (network drive based) photos and catalog
Use PSE8 to move the whole directory tree to internal hard drive
    Upgrade PSE8 catalog in LR3
Use LR3 to move the whole directory tree back to the network drive
Not ideal, but it should get the job done...
Yes, confirmed by Adobe.  It's a design limitation *of the PSE upgrader*.  You can use LR3 to store images on a network drive, you just can't store the catalog there.  I don't expect this to be fixed soon, so I'd go with the workaround if I were you.
I'm not storing my catalog on the network drive though, just my photos. Even with the catalog on an internal drive, LR3 still fails to upgrade any photos that are on a network drive.
I have though now spoken to a helpdesk chap at Adobe, and he has confirmed that Lightroom is not able to upgrade photos on a network drive. Seems like a really poor show to me, but I don't suppose I can do much about it...

I have been using the full network path, but that doesn't appear to be the problem.  When I enter the path, it says access is denied.  I made

  • Lightroom has trouble reading RAW files on my network drive ("The file appears to be unsupported or

Hey guys, I currently run LR5 on Mac OSX.  I've had my RAWs on an external HDD and have smart previews built for those files.  Recently, I upgraded to a new router, the ASUS RT-N65U, and plugged in my WD My Passport Ultra HDD (FAT32 filesystem) into to.  Now I've put my RAWs on the network drive, and verified via MD5 checksums that the files are being read correctly (albeit rather slowly) from the network drive.
However, whenever I try to view one of the photos on the network drive, Lightroom complains, "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged".  I've verified via MD5 that the files are not damaged.  Does anyone know how I can get LR to be happy with the files on my network drive?
(Bonus question: how do I make my network drive faster?)
    Thanks!

    Got RAWs from a D7000 and D600, LR v5.2 [922700].
Oddly things are working now... I ejectected the network drive in Finder and reconnected to my router.  Lightroom no longer has problems viewing the photos, even after I closed my laptop and reopenned it.  I think the problem might occur when my laptop goes to sleep for a long time and I reconnect.  Will repoert back when I try that.
I'm using an external HDD attached to my router.  The reason I don't plug the external HDD to my laptop directly is I don't want to keep doing it every time I want to access my photos, and my laptop only has limited disk capacity since it's an SSD.

  • PS Elements 7; network drive; two computers

    Hi,
I am running PS elements 7 on a home PC with all photos on external network drive.
I would like to install another copy of elements 7 onto the home laptop and allow both PC and laptop to have full access and editing rights for our photos.
How can I have elements 7 installed on both systems and share tags, ratings, notes, books, edits, etc.
Would we have to limit one pc to access photo files at a time or can both pc access files concurrently. I would expect we would generally only access via one computer at a time.
Is there a walk through to set this up please?
    many thanks
    Andrew

Let me clear one thing which I noticed in main query :
PSE does not contain files, it keep all references of files and their metadata in a database, so you actually will be sharing the Catalog database. And there are limitations of databases that you can't use one databse through two applications effeiciently becasue there m,ay be access right problems at a particular time....
So remember that apart from sharing files you are also sharing catalogs, If I understand it correctly...

  • Syncing photos from network drive

all my photos are stored on a network drive and itunes successfully syncs all photos from this drive to my iphone. however, the next time i turn on my computer and re-sync, i see from the photos tab that the location of my photos has been changed to the iphotos library, which i don't use.
this may be happening because i run itunes so soon after booting that the computer hasn't had the chance to find the network drive yet. and that's fine. but if i re-select the source of photos to the same network drive, itunes insists that it is a different library than on my iphone and wants to sync all the photos from scratch.
is there a way to indicate that this is the same source and not a new source?

Same results here... I have an Infrant ReadyNAS RAID file server that I bought to be my 'master' vault for all my data. My computers don't store any important data locally. Their "My Documents" shortcuts point to the fileserver.
When I tried to sync Apple TV to the My Pictures folder, iTunes would think for a few seconds and then give me the little exclaimation mark inside the triangle instead of the synching icon, and would go no further.
I was occasioanlly able to sync very small picture subfolders from under "My Pictures", but that was it.
Since I don't plan on moving the master copies of my photos off of the fileserver, I am just going to use a batch file to periodically mirror the x:\mypictures folder to c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror. Then I'll just set up Apple TC to go get the photos there instead.
    robocopy "x:\my_documents\mypictures" c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror /e
I use robocopy for lots of other stuff because it only copies new or modified files (it's a free microsoft utility)

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

  • Why doesn't photo stream for iCloud control panel allow network drives?

I have just installed the iCloud control panel for my PC and was very excited about the possibilities that it would open up for my numerous i-devices and large photo library. The simple setup works just fine by putting my photo stream files into the default 'My Pictures' folder. Unfortunately, that is not where I keep my pictues, they are all organized on a mapped network drive (local network). The photo stream options in the iCloud control panel do not allow me to select a network drive as a storage location.
Is the inability to select a network drive for storage a deliberate decision or is this a bug?

I am experiencing the same problem
This is really frustrating!  What is the technical difficulty in making this available?  This disables all users who use NAS from using Photo Stream.
    What a huge oversight.

  • Networked Drive: An error occurred while trying to save your photo library

I just upgraded to iLife '08. After opening iPhoto '08 I began editing Events. After some merging and adding titles I got this error:
+"An error occurred while trying to save your photo library"+
My iPhoto Library is on a networked drive connected to another Mac. Both Macs are on the same switch and there appears to be no issues copying and deleting files and folders outside of iPhoto. Even inside iPhoto, this error is inconsistent, it happens on some changes and not others. I've had this setup for about three years with no issues in previous versions of iPhoto.

There's a strong chance that the problem is the format of the server. Event though the Mac can read and write to FAT formatted drives, there are file name length issues that can really mess up a library or other files.
If you really want to have an error free setup use a server that's formatted for Mac OS X (journaled).
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Slow importing photo library from network hard drive

I have about 20GB of photos stored on a network hard drive. I'd like to import them into iPhoto but I don't want to store them locally on my macbook pro as it will take up too much space.
I followed the advice from previous posts and set up my library on the network drive - however the import process is taking way too long. Last night I was able to get about 100 photos in 3 hours. I eventually gave up and stopped the process. I realize that transferring via the wireless network is slowing things down but there has to be a way of doing this that doesn't take several days. I didn't have this problem on my PC using Adobe Photoshop Elements - it was able to import the same number of files from the network drive in less than an hour. I watched iPhoto while it imported a single (small) photo - it took about a minute just to import a file less that 1mb in size.
any sugestions or should I just stick to Windows?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'll try the wired connection tonight - I do have other devices that access photos/mp3's over my wireless network (eg. xbox360) that seem to have no difficulty with speed.
Do you think it would make any difference if I imported in smaller groups (maybe one folder/50 photos at a time) rather than trying to import my entire photo album at once (3000 photos). It might take a few days, but it is a process I could run in the background while I surf. Just curious if iPhoto cares - does it take the same amount of time to import 50 photos 20 times, versus 1000 photos in one shot...?
    thanks for the advice

I am new to mac.  Do I need to store photos on the hard drive to use iPhoto or can I store pics on a network drive and still edit with iPhoto?

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
