Photos on the Touch

1. What is the best size to make photos for the Touch?
2. Some of my photos do not seem to fill the entire screen, even though their physical dimensions are very large. I am talking about when I view these images either in vertical or horizontal views. Why is this?
Thanks.

Hi Steve
The larger photos will have a different ratio than the screen of your iPod. The iPod has a screen size of 320x240. Therefore only photos that have the same ratio as this size will fill the screen.
As an example my 1680x1050 pixel desktop iMac pictures will scale down to fill the screen on my 1440x900 pixel MacBook Pro screen without having to stretch it in any direction.
Hope this is helpful...

  • How to get CLEAR photos on the Touch?

I love my iPod touch, but there's one thing that has always bothered my - photos sync'd through iPhoto-->iTunes are grainy and have bad color. Until now, I've been unable to prove this - but finally I've found a way to prove that it's not just in my head. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to get clear photos on the Touch ... ?
First of all, after using the app "PhoneView" to download my sync'd pictures from my iPod BACK to my Mac, I've noticed that the resolutions are different for pictures, depending on whether their orientation is portrait or landscape. For portrait 4x6 images, the resolution is indeed 480x320. However, for landscape orientation, the resolution is consistently 640x426. I think it's kind of odd that iTunes would be sizing photos differently depending on their orientation ... I usually have my full-resolution pictures in iPhoto and sync those images through iTunes, but today I also tried manually resizing my pictures to 640x426 (landscape) and 480x320 (portrait) and then syncing them as a folder, rather than through iPhoto. The results were the same as doing it through iPhoto: disappointing. I've put together a sample, below:
    and another example here.
As you can see, even the manually resized images are turning out horribly grainy. What's even more disappointing than the image quality, however, is the file size: my original JPG is 84KB, but the iTunes' "optimized" JPG is five times as large (456KB) with inaccurate color and awful grain to boot. I mean, it looks like someone dribbled a basketball all over a glossy print (seriously, that grain's pattern is an exact match with the grain on a basketball) ... Is it supposed to look like that?
+After examining the EXIF data for both pictures, I've noticed another oddity which explains the bad color at least - when iTunes 'optimizes' pictures for the iPod, it apparently assigns them your monitor's color profile! Was this just an oversight that has yet to be corrected? When I export my pictures from Lightroom to iPhoto, I always use the sRGB profile because it's the most standard profile to use when sharing pictures (posting online, emailing, etc) ... My iMac's color profile is a custom Spyder2Pro profile, but that profile is only accurate for THIS MONITOR - certainly not my iPod! Anyway, I've uploaded the original pictures if anyone is interested in checking them out - you can download them in a zip archive here.+
This is the second iPod I've noticed grainy pictures with, so I know it's not just defective hardware. So I guess my question is simple: does anyone know of ANY way to get clear photos sync'd with the iPod Touch or iPhone? I've poked through plists in iTunes.app and preferences, etc - but I haven't found anything. Any ideas?

    Thanks for the reply, Duddo.
I guess you're right, Apple probably just wanted to simplify the syncing process and make it consistent for all users. And no, most users probably won't notice that awful grain and poor color reproduction.
That said, I think it's a real shame to waste the capabilities of the iPhone/Touch like this. Wasting storage space is asinine (increasing file size 5X when 'optimizing'?!) not only due to the limited storage space available in the first place, but also due to the fact that smaller files are quicker and easier to load and manipulate. Overwriting color profiles is just sloppy coding, an oversight - hopefully one they'll soon fix. But the biggest problem for me is that the pinch/zoom functionality is USELESS because if you zoom in at all, the grain is so blatantly obvious. I found an old discussion thread on another forum which mentions this problem, according to several posters there, the grain problem was introduced AFTER the iPhone launched (meaning it can likely be corrected in a firmware update or an iTunes update) ... You can check out that discussion here, if you're interested:
    http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone/not-optimize-photos-8264.html
Anyway thanks again for your reply. I'll keep my eye on this thread and if I hear anything about this issue (or a workaround) I'll be sure to post it!

  • Simple way to get a photo onto the Touch?

Is there any way--including 3rd party app--to get a single photo, or a few pics, onto the Touch? Sometimes I just want to get something on the Touch without the bother of adding it to iPhoto or creating a dedicated folder, copying the pic to it, manually designating that folder in iTunes, etc.
In this case, I have a picture of a menu I found online, and I want to be able to reference it to call in an order when I'm out. Since I can't count on available wifi to retrieve it, I'd like to easily get it onto the Touch for when I need it.

or call it up when you do have wifi, hold your finger on it, and save the photo to your ipod.

  • Please help...I can't sync my photos to the touch

In itunes it says it's syncing and preparing photos and all that jazz...but then it's not on the touch. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

I had similar problems, especially with iTunes being so crappy at giving me any status indication (other than a static 'preparing' or 'synching' msg blinking for hours on end)....any interruption seems to restart the entire process (including a multi-hour attempt that aborted with the helpful msg: 'error encountered').
I found the problem was overloading the beasty. iTunes insists on resampling the entire library before attempting to synch photos, which are done after all other media is synched (music, then vids, then tv, then photos - space permitting).
Instead of synching ALL photos, create a single folder named 'iphotos', possibly with subfolders (fam, work, girls, etc). Place a LIMITED TEST amount of photos, and then synch JUST this folder. Increase the fotos in this folder as you become bolder - nice to finally see it work (I'm up to 5K+ photos loaded).
Very pretty device, but I'm frustrated with the forced resampling (there is NO 'retain full resolution' option. Makes for the nifty-zoom gesture to be crippled as your zoom generates muddy garbage instead of the razor-sharp detail the display could be showing.
I am also a little freaked that it self-created a folder marked 'Photo Gallery' with a copy of EVERY photo in every subfolder - placing the secret more mature content side-by-side with the kids and family shots. There will have to be a way to sort or content, much as I can create tv-folders to at least segment content.
Last gripe of the night: I cant figure out how to delete photo content from the iTouch (there, I said it: iTouch!) without redocking and resynching all the photos again; one stupid photo in the bunch and I'm back to the dock for a multi-hour frustration.
Am hoping the JailBreak comes soon, as this could be more wonderful than it is yet (singing the early-adopter-ipod-blues).

  • Organizing photos on the fly on the Touch.

    Hello,
I would like to know if anyone has figured a way to organize or at least mark specifiy photos on the Touch so that they are easier to find when browsing through them? I've got over 3000 pics on mine and it's a pain in the *** trying to recall specific photos. Is there a way to Mark them some how? It would be nice if you could create albums while on the iPod.
Or like creating an album on the fly by pressing and holding on a photo and then it adds the photo to a new album. If that functionality isn't there already, it would be nice if someone could add a program that let you do this...
    Just an idea.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Unfortunantely, there is no way yet, maybe on June, maybe from someone else, who knows.

So, i tried to delete it.. not able to because the picture won't open. (too much resolution ??)
So even if i use itunes, or iPhoto I can't see the folder called Saved photos or not able to delete it.
What Solution? How to manualy manage photos on the Touch? Using 3rd party apps? wich one?

When you connect to your Mac, does iPhoto launch? You cannot manually manage the pics on your IPT, but you can choose the option to delete the photos after the transfer. Try that, and it should eliminate the pic from the IPT.
If not, perform another Restore, but _do not_ select the option to restore from the backup. After that, the photo will be gone.
    Hope this helps...

  • How do I delete photos from iPod Touch?  Some photos do not have the trash basket option!

How do I delete photos from iPod Touch?  Some photos do not have the trash basket option!
When I first synced my iPod Touch with my laptop, it uploaded a lot of photos onto the iPod.  I now wish to delete those but it does not seem as a straight forward option!

For photos synced to the iPod you have to unsync them:
To delete photos from your device
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
    Click Apply.

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • On my iphone 5s, in "photos" when I touch to enlarge, random new photos taken with 5s appear as old photos taken with 4 years ago - that aren't even on the laptop that I plug into. How do I correct this?

On my iphone 5s, in "photos" when I touch to enlarge, random new photos are showing as old photos. For example, let's say I'm looking in an album at a photo of a dog I took today. If I touch to enlarge- that photo of a dog is suddenly a photo of a family member taken three years ago (on my old iphone 4). This is random and has happened to about a dozen photos. This has caused me to accidently delete new photos thinking they were old ones until I figured out this was some sort of glitch. The old photos that are posing as new photos aren't even on my laptop that I plug into - they've been on my external hard drive for awhile so I don't even know how they're linking! Any suggestions??

I've tried both ways.  My Computer locates the device but doesn't see the old photos, only listing the new photos.
I no longer have the iphone3; I just transferred the photos from the 3 to the 4.
Was there a format change or file type change or did the transfer process create something different?  I can still see and access the old photos if I go to that album on the phone.  But that's the only place where I can see them or access them.

Yu are trying to impoort photos taken by or saved to the iPod, right? If the photos were synced to the iPod then iPhot does not work.

  • Can i upload photos to the adobe creative cloud so i can access them in photoshop touch?

using photoshop touch on my android tablet (motorola xoom), i can't seem to directly access photos located in various folders on the tablet, on my pc, or on my mac.  if i upload photos to the adobe creative cloud, can i then bring them from the creative cloud into photoshop touch on the tablet?  if so, how do i upload photos to the creative cloud?  thanks.

thanks, dave ... your demo is what I needed ... much appreciated.
however, if i try to upload to the creative cloud using a motorola xoom,
there seems to be a very limited number of folder/file choices/locations
from which i can perform the upload, whereas if i attempt the same action
by accessing the creative cloud site via a pc browser, i seem to have
access to all of the pc's folders & files.
specifically, if i attempt to upload from the xoom, here are the choices
    provided ...
    - Camera
    - Camcorder
    - Sound Recorder
    - ASTRO
    - Bluetooth File Transfer
    - ES File Explorer
    - Gallery
    - QuickPic
    - Select music track
... of course some of these are android apps i've installed onto the xoom
... but are you aware of any reasons for this limitation, and whether this
set of choices can be modified (either via photoshop touch or the creative
cloud or the xoom)? for example, i use dropbox on all my devices (pc, mac,
droid, & xoom), & it's my preferred location for many pics ... i'd like to
be able to upload from dropbox to the creative cloud using photoshop touch
on the xoom ... do you know whether this is possible, and if so, how to do
    so?
    again, many thanks!

I HAVE 2 HARD DRIVES ON MY LAPTOP. MY PHOTOS ARE ON 1 HARD DRIVE & MY ITUNES IS ON ANOTHER HARD DRIVE. I AM HAVING TROUBLE SYNCING THE PHOTOS FROM THE SEPERATE HARD DRIVE ONTO MY IPOD TOUCH. ANY HELP?

There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors.  I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V.  Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA.  Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more.  Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that.  Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1].   Does your drive have the option for external power?  If so try it.  Following up on wtx's comment;  USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power.   Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification:  A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest.  I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

  • Photos into the iPod Touch

I searched the posts and everything I have found seems to be regarding the same problem but using Windows....
I am trying to upload photos onto my touch. Whenever I try to upload a picture I get the error saying something like "this photo is not viewable on this iPod". I know that is not the exact message but it is something along those lines.
Any suggestions on what I should do? I sized the pictures down to 320x240, and they are named something like "IMG_804.jpg" minus the quotations of course...
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
I resized the photos using GraphicConverter. The only reason I did resize them is the original photos are large and I don’t want to take up that much space on my iPod.
I should probably mention this as well: I have not tried Syncing the photos I want onto the iPod. I use my iPod on two computers and I don’t want the iPod to be Synced with just one of them. I have added everything else by just dropping it into the iPod via iTunes and that has worked fine for the movies, music, and podcasts. It recognizes the photos that I am trying to drop into it just like the other media but then the error pops up.
Not that it matters but the exact error that I get is:
“Some of the files, including “IMG_0874,JPG” were not copied to the iPod “Touch” because they cannot be played on this iPod”.
    Thanks again.

Yes, you should get an email if somebody replies to a thread you started or one to which you posted. I did; that's how I knew you had replied. Check up at the top of the right column of this thread. In the "Actions" box you should find "Stop email notifications" if you are subscribed to this thread.
One step you didn't list among HP's suggestions is a compound action: delete the app, reset the iPad (by holding down the home and start buttons together for ten seconds), then reinstall the app and test it. If it still falls over, I would say the HP app has not kept up with iOS changes and needs updating -- OR your iPad has developed some persistent internal corruption in its photo storage that only the HP app trips over (in which case, the app still needs updating, but it's going to be much harder for HP to determine how).
