Photos open in Preview, won't import to iPhoto

iMac G5
MAC OS X 10.3.9
iPhoto 5.0.4
After coming home from college I noticed that the iPhoto on my family's home computer wasn't opening at all. After following the different instructions on the discussion boards with no success, I found the only thing that would work was to create a new library and rebuild it manually. I would go to File->Add to Library, then I would import photos from the individual folders in "Rebuilt Library" (I had previously used iPhoto Library Manager to try and rebuild the library and thought taking the pictures from the "Rebuilt Library" would be a good idea.)
Some of the photos would import but with others I would receive the message "Couldn't create: /Users/user/Desktop/iPhotoLibrary1/2006/08/04/IMG0702.JPG" This usually would happen with more than one photo in the folder and after all the files that could be imported were done a pop-up entitled "Unreadable Files" would appear with the message "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
The photos that iPhoto deems unreadable can still be opened with Preview however.
I would love to be able to rebuild the library to resemble how it was before the whole mess happened, so any help would be great!
Thanks!

Those files that open in Preview, open them in Preview and then save them. Then try import them.

  • Scanned photos from photoshop won't import to iphoto

I rescanned some photos, the firsts were fuzzy, through photoshop. I saved as a jpeg file to a file on my computer but it won't let me import those to iphoto. I thought first it was because I saved them under the same file name, so opened photoshop, found the photos and saved under a new name. Still cannot import. Then I thought it may be due to the pictures already existing on iphoto, so deleted those, still with no luck.
    Please help.

    Baby Jake
Not so: iPhoto can work with any format supported by QuickTime. From the iPhoto help:
    iPhoto: About Compatible File Types
This document discusses which image file types are compatible with iPhoto.
    Importing to iPhoto
iPhoto can import photos saved in any format recognized by QuickTime, including:
    BMP
    GIF
    JPEG/JFIF
    MacPaint
    PICT
    PNG
    Photoshop (with layers)\
    SGI
    Targa
    FlashPix
    TIFF
    Files used by iPhoto
Any edited or rotated GIF images are saved in JPEG (.jpg) format. Any other file type, or unedited GIFs, retain their original file type.

  • Certain photos won't import into iPhoto?

Today I tried to import all of my photos from the past few months into iPhoto from my iPhone 5s. But what I discovered is that all of my pictures from February 21st until May 9th won't import or won't appear in my iPhoto library, but they are obviously still on my phone. All of my pictures from May 9th until now imported, but it's just within that specific time frame that none of those pictures will import and I have absolutely no idea why. I tried rebooting my computer and phone, force quitting iPhoto, selecting only the photos that won't import and trying to import those individually, but nothing is working. Please help, I'm really upset and frustrated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How to stop photos opening in preview. I have always edited photos right from my desktop and now they are all opening in preview.

I have always edited photos right from my desktop and now they are all opening in preview. How do I change it back? Thanks!

They open in Preview by default.
However, if you open Picture Folder in Preview, navigate to any photo ( without opening it ) then right click on the photo and select Get Info from the dropdown menu.
About  2/3rds' of the way down on the Get Info tab you'll see a Marker ' Open WIth '. Enter whichever editing program you're using.
Whenever you open a photo from whatever it's location it will open in the chosen editing program.
    Hope this helps.

  • Yosemite upgrade; apps won't open. (Preview, Mac App Store, Mail, iPhoto)

I recently updated to Yosemite on my 13" 2011 MacBook Pro, but now the Mac App Store, iPhoto, Mail, and Preview won't open. I tried restarting numerous times and resetting the PRAM, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Iphone photos won't import to iphoto

When I try to import photos from my iPhone I click "import selected photos" and then iPhoto goes to the events menu and my iPhone disappears from the left side. The iPhone still appears in iTunes, so even though it doesn't appear in iPhoto, it is still there in iTunes.
I have tried selecting all photos to import, and a select few, but neither method works. I have also tried Image Capture, but my iPhone doesn't appear in the device list.
I've tried rebooting, and have tried disconnecting my iPhone and then reconnecting it many times. Each time it appears in iPhoto, but disappears as soon as I begin to import.

    Try resetting the Phone.

  • Files that won't import to iPhoto

I keep encountering files (png and jpeg) that wont' import into iPhoto even though they are fine in all other programs. I am using iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. Any help would be appreciated. I use iPhoto to organize all my digital scrapbooking supplies, so not being able to import into it is a problem.
    Thanks!

Usual reasons why a photo won't import:
Unsupported Colour Profile - iPhoto works with RGB (which is what camera's shoot in) not CYMK or Greyscale
Malformed Metadata on the file - try open it in Preview, Save it, and then import it.

  • Photos on hard drive cannot be imported into iPhoto

I've got several thousand photos I've downloaded from my CF cards (pics taken with Nikon Coolpix 950) onto my hard drive. They are recognized as photos by Photoshop, Preview, Word, etc., but iPhoto (v5.0.4) says, "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)".
If I import directly from the CF card, iPhoto imports ok. I really want to be able to add all my photos to iPhoto. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    John, some questions...
Are the images on an external or the internal of another computer?
Are you dragging them from the other computer to your desktop, then trying to import them into iPhoto?
Have you tried created a new library and importing them into that?
Have you tried creating a new administrative user, open iPhoto and try importing the images into that new library?
I forgot if you mentioned this, but are the images jpg?
    If not, what are they?
On the other hard drive is there an iPhoto (you mentioned that)? Have you opened that iPhoto and imported the images into that library?

  • IMovie won't import from iPhoto (this is different than all the other post)

Before you think, "Oh... this is the typical 'iMovie 7 isn't importing iPhoto movies' question" this isn't. I've looked through a ton of threads and questions trying to find something similar to this.
Q: I have all my digital camera (Canon SD500 camera (not camcorder), no known compatibility issues with Apple) movies, which are in .AVI format, in iPhoto. iMovie is being weird as in it will only import SOME of my camera movies. For some events, it imports ALL the movies in. For some events, it won't import ANY of the movies in. For some events, it will only import SOME of the movies included in it.
If someone responds, "Your camera is incompatible" OR "the file format isn't supported" they should have points deducted from their account because they didn't read anything except for the first sentence and decided I don't know what I'm talking about.
Here's some interesting things that have happened:
    1) I found ONE event in question called "Wedding Pictures & Movies" that wasn't showing up in iMovie. The camera we took movies with has other movies in other events that have successfully been imported into iMovie. But anyway, I realized that for some programming languages (I don't know if this is true with iMovie, I doubt it) that the ampersand (&) sign is used in code and shouldn't be used in titling things. So I shortened the name down to "Wedding" and all the sudden (more like after iMovie asked me if I wanted to create the thumbnails for the movies), SOME of my movies were put into iMovie, not all.
    2) Upon realizing that either: the event name was too long OR the & sign actually did screw it up, I shortened another event in question from "Reception Pictures & Videos" to simply "Reception". Upon opening iMovie, it never asked to build the thumbnail library with movies from this "Reception" event that I did the exact same thing to as the "Wedding" event.
    3) I thought I would try and force iMovie to refresh the thumbnail database (or build thumbnails for another movie again) by taking another movie with said camera above, the same one that I've taken all the other movies with, and imported the movie into iPhoto. Upon opening iMovie, it asked me to build the thumbnail, but only did so for the movie that I just took.
What could be going on that movies from the same camera aren't showing up in iMovie? I can understand other cameras, but these movies are all from the same camera. Some will show up while others will not? Does anyone have a clue what could be going on here?
BTW, the movies have not been edited in any way. They are all still in the exact same format and everything since they were imported into iPhoto.

  • Rotated video clip won't import into iPhoto

I rotated a vertical video clip shot with my digital camera using both Transform Movie and Bit PLayer. And, actually both worked great. The problem, however, is that iPhoto won't let me me import them back into my Library. Can anyone tell me why or help with this issue ?

Do you have Quicktime Pro. You can rotate the video file with that and it will work in iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • "supported" camera won't import into iPhoto

Just got my new iMac yesterday...I have an ancient digital camera - a Minolta Dimage 2300 - which I was never able to get to import into iPhoto on my old Mac and just downloaded them into Photoshop...well, I can't find the disk (or a supported driver) to get that to work and I still can't import them into iPhoto. I plug in the camera, turn it on and nothing...any ideas (aside from the obvious of getting a new camera -it's on my to do list - and running to Wal-mart to have them put on CD).
    Thanks!

Hi, artful. Are you running iPhoto 4.x or older? If not, repost your question in an appropriate Discussion forum for the version of iPhoto you're using. If so, read on.
With the camera connected to the Mac, set in its transfer-to-computer mode (assuming it has one), and turned on, open the Image Capture application from your Applications folder. Does it immediately tell you that no camera is connected? If so, I'm guessing you're going to be out of luck with the Minolta. Either way, open Image Capture Preferences (in the File menu), instruct IC to open iPhoto when a camera is connected, and then quit IC. If iPhoto still doesn't open the next time you connect your camera, then it would seem that the camera may be recognized in some way, but not properly.
Minolta has no software driver downloads available for the 2300 and any version of OS X. There is some sort of software download for the 2300 and Mac OS 9.2.1, but since Classic is not supported on the Intel Macs, nothing that needs to run in OS 9 is going to do you any good, and I suspect connecting your camera to your new iMac just isn't going to work.
A fallback option that may work is buying an inexpensive USB card reader (~$15-20) that accommodates your camera's CompactFlash card. Remove the card from the camera when it's full or you want to transfer photos. Insert it into the reader, connect the reader to the iMac, and if you're lucky and you've set Image Capture's preference as described above, iPhoto will open right up and offer to import your pictures. This method of transferring photos frequently works where a USB connection to the camera doesn't, because it gets the camera hardware out from between the card and the Mac: cuts out the middleman, so to speak. The middleman is sometimes a poor translator, and eliminating him can sometimes clear up miscommunication between the principals.

  • Movie won't import into iPhoto

Hi. I have a Canon Powershot A570. Up till now, I've never had any problems importing movies/images from this camera or previous Powershots to my Mac using iPhoto. However, this time, all the movies/images were imported from my SD card except one--a movie in AVI format that's about a minute long. I have repeatedly tried to import this movie, but to no avail. Each time, iPhoto begins the process normally, but then after a couple of minutes, it just stops importing without giving any error messages. Does anyone have any idea why I can't import this movie? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I don't know why it happens, but I have the same experience with longer videos and iPhoto 6. If iPhoto won't import a movie, the solution is to launch Image Capture (in your Applications folder) and use it upload. You can choose "Download Some" and then preview the files on your camera. Select the clip and import it to a Desktop folder. Don't believe the importing progress meter - it goes from nothing to 100% with no indication of how long you should wait. I've found that if I'm patient the clip will upload fully. Once on the Desktop I've had no trouble getting iPhoto to import it to the library.
    Regards.

  • Preview and Finder showing photos with the right rotation, once imported to iPhoto its lost

    Hi,
I'm geting nuts with this issue.
For my own camera all works fine. 90° rotated pics show up in Finder, Preview and iPhoto correctly. Landscape is landscape, portrait is portrait.
Now I got photos shared (using Dropbox) from a friends camera. Finder and Preview also show landscape and portraits correctly rotated.
But, once I import them (by drag&drop from the Finder) into iPhoto, all portrait photos are landscape now and need to be rotated 90°. This is the same for Thumbnails, full screen and even slideshow.
The only difference when importing those photos is, for my own I use the import out of iPhoto (by plugging the SD directly to the Mac), the other photos are imported from the Finder with drag&drop.
BTW, the rotation information for all photos are correct in Preview (1 for normal photos, 8 or 6 for 90° rotated).
So what is the problem here? I'm going nuts.
    Thanks in advance.
    Monty

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

  • Thumbnails won't open and images won't import

I firewire transfered my files from my i-book to my new i-mac g5. All the thumbnails are viewable but I can't open them, i just get that spinning wheel. Furthermore, all image files that i try to import into i-photo either by dragging and dropping or by importing from my camera are said to be unreadable. I have no idea why there would be a problem doing these basic things. Any ideas? Please?

    Hi Jonathan,
Did you copy the Entire iPhoto Library folder on the ibook to the Pictures folder on the iMac? I have done that before and iPhoto opened the library just fine on the other computer.
Are the usernames the same on both computers?
