Photos recognized by iPhoto but denied import "Unreadable File"

Hi everyone,
Have used the same camera to load photos to iPhoto previously, however, my hardware crashed and was replaced recently.
iPhoto and Preview both recognize the pictures but when uploading the photos an error message comes up saying:
Unreadable Files
The following file could not be uploaded. (The file is an unrecognizable format.)
The videos from the same device uploaded successfully, just not the pictures. Can anyone give advice on how to get the photos uploaded?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Uploading to where? Do you mean Importing?
Use Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) to move the photos to your Desktop and then open and save one with Preview. Will that import? If so, try the same one the others and then use your camera to reformat your card.

  • IPhone 5 is recognized by iPhoto but not iTunes (OSX 10.6.8, iTunes 10.7, iPhoto 7.1.5)

I am helping a friend with her new iPhone 5.
Issue is that it is recognized by iPhoto but not iTunes.
    iPhone 5 16GB, iOS 6.1.4
    OSX 10.6.8v1.1, iTunes 10.7, iPhoto 7.1.5
Computer: iMac C2D 2.4 GHz (Early 2008)(iMac8,1), 1 GB RAM,
History, recently updated in-place from 10.5.8 Leopard to 10.6.8v1.1 SL, just for the iPhone 5.
Installed iTunes 10.7 (as we do not like interface and loss of separate Playlist view in iTunes 11).
Noted that iPhone 5 stipulates that iTunes 10.7 or higher is required -- So should be OK there.
Initially iPhone was recognized by both iPhoto and iTunes. Then shortly later, iTunes did not see it anymore, was missing from iTunes Devices list.
Called Apple Support, agent walked us through removing iTunes and the iTunes Receipt packages.
Then Reinstalled iTunes 10.7. Ran Permissions Repair. Restarted computer.
Seemed all good, iTunes (10.7) saw and synced and updated the iPhone.
But Now, after two or three weeks, when user plugged in her iphone and ran iTunes, it did not show the iPhone at all, though iPhoto did start up and show pictures.
So the iMac computer sees the iPhone5 well enough to get picture data, but apparently not well enough for iTunes sync.
(she tends to use the wall charger and not plug it into the iMac very much at all).
In all other known respects, both the iPhone5 and the iMac C2D seem to function normally.
    Any thoughts?
I looked at KB article: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/
And at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591 (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X).
And finally am thinking we may need to ALSO do the uninstall via: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1747 (Remove Apple Mobile Device Service).  But I have not visited with here to do that yet.........)
Any thoughts on best way to proceed?
    Thanks.

What error message ar eyou getting. Why do you say it will not allow you to download?
Verify you meet all the system requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store

    Hi
The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0
(Or just set the fader manually in MS)

  • IPhoto does NOT import " .pictClipping " files ?

    Hi,
I copied pictures of artists from Amazon on the Web and put them together with the songs in iTunes Artwork. So far so good.
I wanted to import these pics in iPhoto. I dragged them on the desktop en tried to import them via iPhoto 'Add to library'.
Didn't work. iPhoto does NOT import " .pictClipping " files.
What did I do wrong ? What can I do ?
How can I get these pics in iPhoto ?
Thanks for some light in my darkness...

    Hi JOhn,
Dragging the album cover out of iTunes either by the album art window or by the "get info" window will just give you a clipping file that cannot be opened by a graphic program. It is just a clipping that Finder will open.
Did you download the images from Amazon and save them to your hard drive, or did you copy/paste them from Amazon to iTunes song "get info" window?
If you just did a copy.paste, then I suggest you go back to Amazon and download the images to your hard drive. then import into iPhoto. There might be some third party programs that will download the art while your songs are playing on iTunes to make it easier for you. they usually put them on a folder on your hard drive somewhere.
there's even an Applescript program to export your artwork from iTunes and copy it to an image file at a specified location.

There are all kinds of ways of doing this so search around Version Tracker for "itunes album art" for other programs to make it easier for you.

  • Photos deleted from iPhoto, but still in Library folder

    iPhoto 9.5.1
Strange behavior in iPhoto : let's say I imported 100 photos. Then, in iPhoto, deleted 80, keeping 20. Emptied trash in iPhoto. Then emptied Trash in Finder.
Let's say the "_DSC1234.JPG" photo was among deleted files. When searching "_DSC1234.JPG" in Spotlight, I find it in the "Master" folder of the "iPhoto Library" folder (Photothèque in French).
I've got a lot of photos deleted, but kept in Library, Not good for privacy, not good for hard drive space.
For exemple, I find 514 ".NEF" photos in the iPhoto searchbox. But when searching in the iPhoto LIbrary folder with Spotlight for files with ".NEF" in their names, I find 1048 ! No duplicates, no previews or "faces" (hey are in JPEG), but photos I deleted, before emptying iPhoto and Finder trash !!
    Rebuilding Library didn't help.
I'm using a user account not allowed to administrate the computer. Maybe a link ?
The question was already asked, but never answered :
Growing iPhoto Library, deleted photos still in folders
Deleted Photos:  Why are they still in my iphoto library folder?
Photos deleted from within iPhoto are still in Library folder
    Thanks for your help !

Strange behavior again, with the original library : If I select NO event and use the menu Information, I've got 14.634 photos. If I select all events, I've got 15.760 photos. How can I have more photos in all events than in my Library ??????
Check, if you have hidden photos.
File > New Smart Album,  with a rule: Photo is hidden
In my iPhoto Library the "Hidden" flag accounts for the difference in the Photos count between selecting all events and no events.
Make sure, "View > Hidden Photos" is enabled in the View menu, so you can recognize hidden photos by the X.

  • Photos appear in iPhoto, but original files have disappeared. Anything I can do to recover them?

What it says in the topic. Specifically, I sorted through and deleted roughly 90% of the photos of a particular event, saving out the 10% I wanted to keep, before emptying the iPhoto trash. I then selected "File>Reveal in Finder>Original Files" in order to move the files to a centralized folder in which I keep the master files from every month. Mind you, I have gone through this process multiple times before and it has worked as expected. This time, however, when I used the "reveal in Finder" feature the finder window I already had open appeared, but nothing else happened. After some manual searching I found that all of the original files for the photos I had deleted from that event were still there, but the files for the photos I hadn't deleted were nowhere to be found (the opposite of what I did in iPhoto and what the library there actually shows). I have tried exporting the desired photos, but I only get a prompt saying that the original files cannot be found; I also cannot individually select any of the photos (only a giant triangle with an exclamation mark in it pops up) despite that all of the thumbnails are still there. Can anyone tell me what's going on or if there's anything I can do, or have I simply lost these photos forever?

in order to move the files to a centralized folder i
That's the problem. If you moved them rather than copy them to the other folder they were removed from the library and you're getting what's expected.  In the future select the photos you want to store in the other folder and use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the Kind = Original selected.  That avoids this kind of error.
Have you emptied the Trash bin in the Dock?  With iPhoto 9 and later image files are moved to the Trash bin in the Dock when the Trash bin in iPhoto is emptied.   If they are there you'll have to import them again into iPhoto and then delete the problem ones from the original event.

  • I subscribed to a photo stream in iPhoto but I'm not seeing any photos

I'm using iPhoto 9.6 on a Macbook using Yosemite.  Someone shared a photostream with me.  I subscribed (using Yosemite) without any errors but I'm not seeing any photos.  I've confirmed with the person who created the photostream that there are photos in it (I've seen them first hand).  I've had this issue before on Mavericks so .  Anyone seen this before?  Any idea how to solve?

Not occurring for me, but you could try this:
This solved my question by adamnash on Oct 19, 2014 6:52 PM
    Solution:
I took a brute force approach:
    - I quit iPhoto
    - I launched Settings, went to iCloud, turned off Photo
    - I launched iPhoto
    - I verified that iCloud was off
    - I quit iPhoto
    - I went back to Settings, went to iCloud, turned on Photo
    - I launched iPhoto
It's now synching all the albums, although the one I published while in this broken case seems to have now disappeared.

  • Zen Micro Photo Recognized in Vista but Not Detected in Creative Softw

How do i fix this problem? My Micro Photo is recognized in Vista. It shows up a portable device when i click "computer"? I can see all the songs on my mp3 player. The problem is the the Creative Mediasource 5. and Zencast organizer says it is not detected. These are the new versions for windows vista. Just downloaded them from the creative website.
Can i just copy and paste songs on the mp3 player from within "Computer" since it is recognized as a portable device? Which software is supposed to be the one I use for organizing music..Mediasource or Zencast??

Great Call on installing the playsforsure update. I had the exact same issue... Zen V Plus recognized by Vista, but not by Mediasource 5 organizer. I had already installed the "CMS5_MTP_PCAPP_LB_5_00_36" update from Creative's support site, which supposedly included the Playsforsure plug-in. However, when I went to Mediasource 5 help, software updates menu item... the plugin was listed as neeing to be downloaded and installed. My Zen V Plus was recognized after the reboot!!

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 Unreadable Files

I just tried to upload photos from my Nikon camera into iPhoto like I always do.  Nothing that I know of has changed since the last time I did an upload.
This time I got the message....
    Unreadable Files: 183
The following file could not be imported.  The file is in an unrecognized format.
It listed the JPGs that it could not import.  It did import 10 photos from that batch though.
To trouble shoot I created a new iPhoto library and tried the upload again.  I got the same error message but it uploaded 4 photos.
    Any suggestions?

Now use the app to move the images to a folder on the desktop.
If you can do that, then import the folder to iPhoto.
If that works, then reformat your card with your camera.

  • IPhoto won't import .mov files from iPhone

I'm trying to import the photos and videos from my iPhone and the following screen shows up:
I've only had this trouble since updating to Yosemite. Any help is appreciated.
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)
    8GB Memory
    2.53 GHz Intel Core i5

There are many, many posts of this nature in these forums.  See, for example:
    iphoto won’t import mov video
For many, rebuilding the XPC helper cache solves the problem off the bat. In terminal try this, and reboot:
    sudo /usr/libexec/xpchelper --rebuild-cache
The above posted by Andy Ball on a thread related to a similar problem with Aperture:
Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion
    Other things to try:
    1. create a fresh iPhoto library and try that.  (hold down opt while launching iPhoto)
    2. create a new OS X user (in system preferences) and try there.
In my case – and many cases – neither of those things work either, which means the problem is system wide.  Again suggesting that the xpc helper solution might work. But for me it did not either.
There are other suggestions that there are conflicts with Perian (on Yosemite) and flip4mac.  In my case uninstalling both of those didn't solve it either.
So maybe one of those solutions will work for you, results apparently vary.  But this is a huge unresolved issue many others are having as well.  I have a case with a senior apple advisor open, still unresolved. His suggestion of course, at this point, is an archive and re-install. I'm not ready to go there yet.
BTW, another thing he had me try was to import the file with Image Capture (which works).  Then open it in QuickTime Player X.  Then try exporting to 480p.  Does QuickTime crash?  It does for me.
    My summary:
    1. Files successfully import with Image Player.
    2. Files play with QuickTime Player X.
    3. QuickTime Player X crashes when exporting to 480p.
    4. Files import with iMove.
    5. Files fail to import with iPhoto (unrecognized format as with OP)
    6. iPhoto import failure/errors are system wide and not specific to a library or a user.
    7. rebuilding xpchelper cache and rebooting in my case does not resolve issue.
    8. same videos import fine in iPhoto on a totally different system (laptop running same versions of OS X 10.10 and iPhoto 9.5.1)

  • IPhoto not displaying imported RAW files

I have the latest OS and iPhoto, and am importing Nikon RAW NEF files from my D7000 into iPhoto...Yes, the OS sees/opens the files, iPhoto does as well, when importing...but afterwards I go to Events and all I get are black boxes with white dotted outlines. If I go to edit mode, it shows thumbnails below, but I get a triangular exclamation point symbol where the photo should be.  The event does show a photo count, and even shows the meta data info from each photo...but no photo image!  Help...

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto won't import AVI file

I recently received a Canon Powershot S2 IS camera. After recording a short movie clip, I attempted to import the file from the camera into iPhoto. iPhoto recognizes the camera and prompts me to "import 1 file from camera". However, when I click "import", nothing happens. The spinning beach ball pops up as if iPhoto is doing something, but in the end nothing is imported.
I've noticed other posts saying they can view their AVI files from their S2 through iPhoto just fine.
What am I doing wrong? Should I get a card reader rather than going directly from the camera to iPhoto?
I have downloaded the AVI file through ImageCapture but I'd prefer to go through iPhoto if possible.

    Hi Aaron,
I have the same camera (love it). The video it takes is awesome, but, the size can get very large! I had the same thing happened the first time I tried to download images and clips with iPhoto. It just sat there at importing and spinning and spinning. I didn't realize at the time that it does take a very long time to import large video clips
I don't use iPhoto to import my images or video clips anymore. iPhoto chokes on large video clips and mine are 100-200 mb clips.
I'll tell you why I use Image Capture to download all images and video clips. I want an easy way to back up just my images to disc and my video clips to disc.
Using Image Capture to download the images are put in the Pictures folder and the video clips are downloaded to the Movies folder. I then take them and put them in dated folders so I can then burn them all to DVD.
If you use iPhoto to import everything, it is a major pain in the butt to get just the movie clips out of iPhoto to back up just them. Since the video clips can get very large, your iPhoto Library folder is going to get very large and harder to back up to DVDs. If you just want to backup the movie clips after they have been imported into iPhoto, you have to drag them all out of the library window to the desktop, then burn them, then delete them from the desktop.
I also like to have all my video clips in my Movies folder, just personal preference.

  • Iphoto won't import NEF files (RAW) How do I convert to Jpeg?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files. Nor will Aperture. Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files
The raw support is specific for each camera model. iPhoto and Aperture can import NEF files for many Nikon models, and it will depend on the camera you are using and your MacOS X version, see this list of supported cameras: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?
Use the software that came with your camera to develope the RAW files, that will give the best results.  Or try the Adobe DNG converter - download it here: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh

My ipod touch weirdly doesn't show up on the desktop or on itunes BUT it will always launch iphoto and ask if I want to download the two photos (which I downloaded from iphoto INTO the ipod, go figure). Any ideas? I have been synching my podcasts by using our house's wireless. I had an ipod previously, but copied over this one successfully...so I thought. Help?

You are correct about things not adding up.
My ipod touch weirdly doesn't show up on the desktop or on itunes BUT it will always launch iphoto and ask if I want to download the two photos (which I downloaded from iphoto INTO the ipod, go figure).
Photos copy only one way - iTunes to iPod. Not the other way around. Could it be that your iPod is being treated as camera? You can disable your computer from recognizing the touch as a camera. See this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1501
I have been synching my podcasts by using our house's wireless.
Wireless syncing is not supported. You can connect to iTunes and download, but you can't sync with your computer wirelessly.
As far as iTunes not recognizing your touch, a piece of software - Apple Mobile Device Services - needs to be operating correctly. See this article for help on troubleshooting problems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747
