Photos Return to library when moved to My Book external hardrive.

I move photos from Iphoto to My Book for more space. Once moved, they always return to my iphoto library. Help. Thank you

You need to tell us what you did and what is happening
the only way to move your library and increase space on your iBook it to quit iPhoto and drag the the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto and select the library on the external drive - fully test it and then you can delete the iPhoto library on the internal drive

Hello, I just successfully copied my iPhoto (v.9.5.1) library to my WD My Book external hard drive. Then I uploaded photos from my various cameras (Canon Powershot & Canon SLR) to the My Book iPhoto only. It seemed successful and I was able to move some around & organize my events - seeing the pictures and even sending them through the iPhoto send program. But today when I reopen the My Book iPhoto, many of my pictures are missing (mostly the ones from the Canon SLR). I see the newly made events, but they have 0 pictures! I have shut down, disconnected the drive, reconnected & restarted = same thing. Can anyone tell me how to recover these photos? (They are still on the cameras' memory cards, so all is not lost!)

andrea, don't work with your iPhoto libraries at all, until you have freed a considerable amount of disk space on your Mac. Each iPhoto crash due to lack of disk space can leave you iPhoto library corrupted, and you cannot run a library repair with only 7GB of space available.
First free space by moving large media files of your drive, and then continue to trouble shoot your library.
The WD My Book was properly formatted & partitioned into 1TB (a Super Duper backup of my whole MacBook Pro) & 2TB (the place I plan to house all my photos/videos & work from to be able to get them off the computer hard drive).
How are you planning to backup the partition with your media (videos, photos)? Do you have a second drive to back them up also?

There is a white triangular shape with random horizontal lines running through each photo in the ibook preview. Took it to the Genius bar, after a week of fooling with it including wiping it clean and resinstalling the OS the same thing happens.

A LOT of them dont appear.
What do you see in the window when you click on those? A blank, black window? An exclamation mark? What?

Photo border in Library when dimming background

In lightroom 3 I had a border around any photo in loupe view when I dimmed the background using the "L" key (seen only when dimmed). I don't remember ever setting it, it just seemed to come that way. I cannot get this border (which really helped to separate the photo from the background) anymore. I tried all preferences and tried to find this out in Lightroom Help before submitting this question. The border looked like the one you can add in the print module. I notice that when using the "L" key to dim, I also lose the ability to display the information overlay, even when cycling through the "I" key. Am I overlooking a setting or is this just a change to LR4?

When using time machine with external hardrive to backup, some music items from iTunes and some photos from iPhoto do not transfer to backup hardrive. What am I ding wrong? Using latest version of mountain lion.

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

Itunes won't copy over some of my podcasts and purchases since I have moved it to an external hardrive

So I Have moved over all my purchases and everything to an external hardrive. I did everything right and my itunes story works perfectly fine. However one of my podcasts (yugioh the abridged series) won't copy over along to the ipod saying its file type is not supported by the ipod. It only does this with the first 8 episodes (if you find it you will see them) one of which (the bbt movie) worked perfectly fine on my ipod before but now for some reason it won't. It also won't work on a few of the tv shows that are in hd and one music album that had american boy in it. I'm wondering what I can do to solve this problem. My itunes and my computer (windows vista operating system) is up to date and I have an ipod classic with plenty of room what should I do.

This doesn't work. The iOS4 upgrade has wiped out synchronization to Outlook to the phone and back. There are many threads on this here, and Apple has yet to address this issue.

Lost photos from iphoto library after moving it

I have a G5 OS X Version 10.5.5.. I had a lot of photos in my iPhoto library and I was told I could move iPhoto application to my external HD by holding down the command key and then drag iPhoto over to the external HD. Which I did. I opened the external HD and all the photos where there in the iPhoto Library. I had to shut down my computer as I was away for a few days and when I turned it back on and went into the external HD the iPhoto application was not there nor the photos. My Time Machine has no record of them as iPhoto only seems to have a record of a new iPhoto Library on my desk. Can I retrieve these photos? Can you run iPhoto from your external HD? I was told I could move iPhoto application to my external HD by holding down the command key and then drag iPhoto over to the external HD.
The problem with moving while dragging is that you defeat the default behaviour of the OS. If you simply drag then your Mac makes a copy of the library on the new volume and you have the opportunity to test it thoroughly before trashing the library on your start up disk.
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Next, moving your Library - which normally lives in your Pictures Folder - and moving the iPhoto application are not the same thing. You should not move the application.
Start by doing an All Images Search:
In the Finder
-f
Kind Images
Size: Greater than 300k
see if that finds anything.

How can I save my place in my library when moving between songs, albums, artists, genres, playlists, store, ect?

I dont remember this being a problem in iTunes 10.
Say I'm in album view. I find an album I want to play. I click on the track. Cool.
Then I decide "Oh I need to see if this album is on a playlist I have."
I switch to playlist view to check out the playlist.
Then when I want to move back to album view, I've lost my place and have to use the "go to" scrolldown menu.
Why can't I switch back and forth between playlists and albums and have iTunes save my place?
What would solve this problem is the little "go to" icon that was on Itunes 10. I hate the scrollbar. Take me to the place I was before! I shouldn't have to think about using this stupid scrollbar. It should essentially be as quick as a "back" button on a web browser, but it's not!

This is my #1 biggest complaint/annoyance with iTunes 11. I tried searching for posts about this issue a dozen times but never found any, no one seems to know what I'm talking about when I describe this issue to them. Haha, so I'm glad I'm not the only one.
But like you said, it's so freakin' annoying that when you're looking at like a Jack Johnson song in your music library, and then click on a playlist to see if a particular Jack Johnson song is in that playlist, when you click back over to your music library you're all the way back up at the top at the 'A' artists and not where you left off. There have been two updates to iTunes 11 and they've yet to bring that feature back. I just sent them a feedback request regarding the issue, so hopefully they'll become aware of it.

Unimported photos found in Library when iPhoto is launched

I get this alert every time I open Iphoto *"A photo has been found in the iPhoto Library folder that was not imported. Would you like to import it?"* Wether I say yes or no to importing it can't find any missing photos. I found a thread saying delete the recovered photos folder it creates in Iphoto, but it still does it. I have only had Iphoto 2 weeks and only imported to it once from my photo folder on my backup drive. I'm running version 8.1.2,

quit iPhoto and go to the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) and right click on it - select show package contents and find the folder named import (or importing) and drag it to the desktop - MAKE no other changes to the contents of the iPhoto library - close the iPhoto library and launch iPhoto - you will be fine - open the import(ing) folder an if there are any photos in it that you need to import do so and then trash the import(ing) folder

Making book with aperture..when moving pictures from book, where do they go? I wanted to move a picture to another page

I am making a book using Aperture. During the production process, when I want to replace a picture, or move it to another location in the book, as I click and move it out of the book, it "disappears". (In I Photo 11 it returned to my list of available pictures).
Where are these pictures? How can I retrieve them?

how do you "click and move the image out of the book"?
If I have added an image to a book page and want it removed and maybe added to a different page, then I ctrl-click the image on the book page and select "cut content", delete or "copy content" (or I select it and press the delete key). Then the image will reappear in the film strip below the book pages and I can drag it to a different page (or I can paste it directy onto a different page if I selectes "copy..".
If I on the other hand deleted an image from the film strip below the book, then the image will be gone from the book completely. How is this different for you?

How to back up my iTunes library when it's on an external HD?

I just purchased a MacBook Air and am busy transferring all of my data to the new computer. It appears I will not have room to keep my iMovie Library and my iTunes library on the Air itself..so I've gotten an external HD to use for that purpose. I have copied all of the info to the HD, opened iTunes and pointed it to that library....it's all working. This is my first time using an external HD in this manner. I do usually use the automated Time Machine as one of my backups. How can can I now back up the libraries that are on the external to the time machine?
I also make a clone backup every once in a while using CCC onto a DIFFERENT external HD. How would I incorporate these libraries into these backups???

I use CCC because I can't use Time Machine. My backup drive is 640 GB and is larger than the sum of my 2 internal drive partitions and second internal drive. I partitioned the external drive so 3 partitions matched or slightly exceeded the size of my internal paritions. This make it easy to do a one to one clone.
I don't have TIme Machine so I don't know what is possible in terms of configuration. They might have a better idea on the Time Machine forum (if there is one) since this isn't something only related to iTunes.

Out of memory error when moving a event to external HD in FCPX...

   When attempting to move a massive (1.75TB) event to a different hard drive using the "move event" feature, I keep getting an "out of memory" diolouge box that prompts me to close any open programs and causes my computer to completely freeze.
    I have a Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM.
   How do I fix this? OR is there another way to move the event / project file without using the 'move event' option in final cut pro x?

   I have tried the duplicate function yes and the same problem. When I open up activity monitor, I can literally see the RAM drain until it reaches zero and then my computer crashes. It is so bizarre!
How much hassel would it be to simply copy/paste the enitre Final Cut Pro Events and Projects folder to my external hard drive? Would I have a hard time reconnecting everything?

Files lost when moving from HD to external HD

I understand that this is a bug (http://www.macintouch.com/leopard/movebug.html) that effects Leopard but it has happened to me using tiger.
I have run Data Rescue2 and it has recovered many files but none of the 200 or so that I lost.
Does anyone have an idea what I could do next?
I'm a complete layman, all the above was suggested to me by someone more knowledgeable. So please, if you do have a answer, explain it simply.

Then the space those files took up on the HD were written over. DR2 is very good, especially if you used the Thorough Scan, if it can't find them then we're talking really big bucks & resources to recover them... if at all.
What happens is that once those files are no longer in the Trash, the OS gets to use those Sectors to write New or temp files to, and just booting up off the same drive can overwrite the Freed Space.

Deleting photos from main library while in Smart Album.

anyone know of a key sequence to delete a photo from the library when viewing the photo in a smart album?
I have over 1700 photos. Sometimes I want to delete all photos within a smart album but you can not do that by just selecting delete; that only deletes it from the album and not the library. as of right now the easies way I have found to do this is to perform a batch change and rename all files the same name, then perform a search within the main library for those files and then delete them. I refuse to think Apple didn't think about creating a "delete from main library" shortcut.

Option Command Delete works for Smart albums also. At least that is what it says in the iPhoto Help/iPhoto keyboard shortcuts in the menu bar.

Hey everyone! i have a external hardrive i keep my itunes library of songs on and it wont sync with my ipod touch inless i copy and paste it into my ipod device when thats conected. i dont want all the songs on there only checked ones. help plz!!

im having trouble with syncing my ipod touch with my itunes library that i keep on a external hardrive. when i plug up my external hardrive that has all my songs on it, it doesn't sync to my ipod correctly. i have to copy and paste the songs to my ipod device when its connected. i dont want all the songs on there and i want to be able to manually control whats on my ipod. and id like to take some songs off of the ipod also but i want them still in my itunes library though. i usually check the songs i want on the ipod but it isnt working that way maybe because its a external hardrive?? i never had a problem with past ipods with my library on itunes but i ran out of space on my computer and had to transfer all of the songs to my external hardrive. please someone help me!! i thought it would be simple! but it isnt the case! i plug up my hardrive then my ipod, i press sync and nothing gets transfered unless i copy and paste them to the ipod. even though it says ipod syncing in progress! this is really confusing! please help me!! sorry if this is jumbled up and confusing..

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.
