Photos stalled in preparing library during first use

I am using an early 2009 iMac, 3.06 GHz intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR2 memory and 190 GB free storage.  OS X 10.10.3.  Photos 1.0 is being used for the first time and has been at 71% complete preparing library for several hours.  I presume it has stalled, what should I do?

Is there any CPU activity at all? I'd leave it. You have a relatively slow machine, all things considered. If it hasn't moved any more after a couple days, then consider doing something about it.

  • Any solution for iCloud - Outlook integration - Preparing calendar for first use?

Every time I switch to the calendar view I get a little bubble in the taskbar saying "preparing calendar for first use". This ends up freezing Outlook for about 45- 60 seconds -- long enough for the Outlook window to have a "(not responding)" added to the title bar. This freeze-out is massively disruptive. It seems like Outlook is re-preparing the new iCloud calendars every time. Is this normal? Is there a configuration setting I could look at for this?
    Same/Reference issue found: ID # 10407486

I had the same issue, this is the solution that worked for me.
-remove all icloud sharing with caledar
    -open outlook
-go to file > account settings > data files
    -delete icloud data file
Now it doesn't freeze on me

  • Photos App says 'Preparing Library...', gets to 65%, quits each time - help!

I'm using a late 2012 iMac running 10.10.3, my iPhoto library is on an external hard drive. I am trying to install the new Photos app and each time I try it says "Preparing Library..." until it gets to about 65% done, and then the app quits and I get a message that it failed and quit.
My iPhoto library is very large - approx. 350 gb.
When I look at the disk where the iPhoto library is, I see that there are new Photos App libraries created for each of the times that I have tried to convert and it has failed, and some are large, even as large as the iPhoto library itself.
Not sure what to do. I don't want to lose any of my photos, but right now they are inaccessible to me because the migration has prevented me from opening my old library.
    HELP!!!!!!!!

A few of the messages I deleted (the last 2 days) now say
"You need to take this account online in order to download it."
If this is the result of having deleted the *.emlx files manually, you're probably seeing this error message because there is still a reference to them in Envelope Index.
Is there anyway to tell Mail to re-download these
    mail files and reconnect them?
If they're still on the server, yes. Choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature. Now, choose the account that has the problem from the Account popup menu at the top of the window. Does Mail display there the messages that are missing? What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?

  • Photos has be Preparing Library for hours and seems stuck...

Launched Photos for first time, chose my iPhoto library and off it went. It's been stuck Preparing Library at 13% for over 8 hours now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

I just started doing preparing my photos. I have several libraries and backups. One of my libraries was on my computer hard drive and that went relatively quickly, just a few minutes for about 20K of photos. After realizing it's the wrong library, I switched to a library on an external hard drive and now after a few hours it's only at 10%.
My questions to you is, are you importing a library from an external or a native drive?

  • NB 305 7 Starter Restore "Preparing Computer for first" use how long stuck??

OK, I've searched far and wide for a straight forward answer on this, but I can't seem to find one anywhere...
So I did a restore on my NB because the guy I bought it from had deleted everything, but didn't do a restore, and It's running 7 starter, and didn't come with a disk...
So I went through the wizard and got everything partitioned and the reboot, now It's stuck (maybe I don't know) on the "setup preparing desktop"  page, and has been like that for a little over an hour.
Now I'm not sure, how long it's supposed to take, as I just got it and haven't played with it much, but Is it supposed to take this long?? If not, what can I do? I saw a couple posts about going through CMD to remove drivers, but I don't have a disk, or USB, and I don't think I can get into BIOS or safe mode.. Anything would be helpful! Thanks guys!

  • Why does Outlook keep "preparing [iCloud] calendar for first use"?

    Hello all --
I just installed iCloud on my Windows 7 laptop and configured it to integrate with Exchange. The functionality seems to work but there are two very annoying behaviours that I hope someone can help me with:
Every time I switch to the calendar view I get a little bubble in the taskbar saying "preparing calendar for first use". This ends up freezing Outlook for about 45- 60 seconds -- long enough for the Outlook window to have a "(not responding)" added to the title bar. This freeze-out is massively disruptive. It seems like Outlook is re-preparing the new iCloud calendars every time. Is this normal? Is there a configuration setting I could look at for this?
The iCloud calendars are always checked when I start up. Is there any way to uncheck them? Solving this might solve #1 above
Any suggestions on how to resolve and/or debug these further?
    Thanks!
    Ramon

  • "Preparing Library..." stuck when first launching Photos.

Using an external drive for my iPhoto library.  Trying to update and after installing 10.3 Photos is "Preparing Library..." for 4+ hours.  It seems to be stuck at 30%.  What's going on?

Mine didn't "prepare" anything and now I'm trying to figure out if my iPhotos pictures are all lost Hope there's some sort of solution here.

  • Icloud photo "preparing library" for weeks, is this normal

Using OSX photos beta. My photos have uploaded to icloud and are in sync between devices. However, when logging into icloud photos on any browser, I have not gotten beyond the "preparing library..." message. It's been about two weeks of preparing. My library is not that substantial (7,000 photos). I feel like the preparing should have finished by now. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

If any of the following is incorrect, please let me know, thanks.
Now that I've had my first bad experience with Verizon in the 16 years I've been a customer, I'm checking out my options.  If the third Palm Pixi is defective, here's what I understand are my options:
    1.  I can keep getting replacement Palm Pixi Plus phones
1a.  Would involve down-time both for calling and computer while waiting for replacement phone
    2.  I can send the Pixi back to Verizon and reactivate my old phone.  BTW it's nearly four years old and still works good unlike the two new Pixi phones that crapped out
2a.  I can drop the data package but now I'm again under a contract
2b.  I will have lost my right to an upgrade to a new phone
    3.  I think I understood that I can exchange the Pixi if defective for another phone but will either:
3a.  Pay the full price of the phone
       3b.  Settle for a re-conditioned phone
Hopefully the third Pixi will work and we'll live together as happily as I have with my nearly four year old non-smart phone.
The CS employees have all been very pleasant and helpful, however, I am very disappointed in the company.  I guess I didn't read the fine print, even if the "new" phone is defective and I send it back I'm punished by Verizon by being held to a new contract period and no upgrade for 18 months.  Live and learn.   BTW, I have several ecommerce carts so I really need to be able to get Online!

  • I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.

I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
-select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
-move aperture library to live on external drive
-import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
-move aperture library to live on external drive
Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
-import iphoto library into aperture library
FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

  • Photos update won't open past the "preparing library" page

iPhoto just updated to Photo 2015.  I can't get to my pictures because the app won't open past the "preparing library" page.
The iPhoto update, under Apps, won't let me resume the update - I get an error "this item is temporarily unavailable".
    Any ideas?

    Hi wolfey_j
    Welcome to apple discussions.
Drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash followed by a full restart of your mac and then repair permissions from apple's disc utility (application > utilities > disc utility)
The plist for iDvd looks like this:
    com.apple.iDvd.plist
If that fails to resolve this issue then delete iDvd using this free download from apple's web site:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
You'll need to re-install iDvd again (custom install from the software that shipped with your mac or any retail copy of iLife'09). And lastly run apple's software updater from system preferences so all is up to date again. (not a bad idea to repair permissions one more time after updating all apps.)
Hope this resolves the issue/s but if not just come on back.
    Good luck.

  • The computer that I first used to download iTunes is no more. I have a new computer that I set my wife up on.  While I can see all my music in the iTunes library I cannot sync my iPod

The computer that I first used to download iTunes, to buy songs and to sync my iPod Nano to iTunes is no more.  I have a new computer that I inadvertently set my wife up on.  When I sign in, while I can see all my music in the iTunes library, when I tried to 'sync', I have lost all my music in my iPod and I now have my wife's library on there instead.
I subscribed to iTunes Match, thinking that this would help.  It hasn't and I'm not happy!
I have arranged to take my iPod into an Apple store next Tuesday but isn't there something you can tel me to do that ties my iPod wth my music and leaves my wife's music for her iPod?  Please help, I am so frustrated and have wasted so much time on this, reinstalling iTunes, restoring my iPod....

How do you know the library was modified with iPhoto 9 (11)?  If you've never had iPhoto 9 on your Mac it could'nt have.  It sounds like a damaged library. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Art,
I am trying to follow your very precise steps, and in my case (PSE11 also, Win7), the focus stays on the edited picture after I return from the editor to the Organizer. I am pretty sure that in the previous post describing your situation, I was able to reproduce the problem, but I don't remember on which version. I just tried in 'Folders' view mode to edit in a selected folder, then I clicked 'All media' so that no folder was selected. Same result in both cases.
Even if you prefer to work in folders view, you could take advantage of the ability to use 'albums'. It's a misleading word to describe a selection, a 'collection' of pictures, which you can sort as you want. It's a kind of  'playlist' like with music items. In the organizer, you can select a folder and create an album (even a temporary one) just by choosing 'create instant album'. Suppose you have made an album from a folder or a selection of highlighted pictures to edit. You can order them in date order, import batch or 'custom' order'. Since PSE12 you can also sort them in filename order. You should never lose the 'focus' on your last edited picture when coming back from the editor to the organizer. If the purpose of that album is only to help in organizing an editing session, you simply delete the album (the playlist) if you don't want to keep the list afterward.
I hope someone will be able to confirm how that can happen...
    Edit;
I have just read Brian's post.
    That may be the difference...

I have many photos in the library folder of iPhoto, but actually I don't know which photos were used in my album.
Is there any method to find this?
