Photos unnecessarily repeating in imovie '11

have just started using iMovie '11 for a project of placing photos to music. When i place some of the photos they don't show up--the photo directly placed before it does. What is going on?

From your post I can't tell what you are doing. So the following is general help for editing photos to music.
The best way to line up photos precisely with music is to use the Beat Marker feature. It is also best to avoid the use of transitions. A beat occurs at a point in time, where a transition occurs over a range of time.
Here is a Tutorial on the Beat Marker Feature.http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/imovie_09_stone.html#markers Scroll down past the part on Comment Markers and Chapter Markers.
Here is a sample video that uses beat markers to keep time with music.
You basically add your music track, add the beat markers in the Clip Trimmer by pressing M as you listen to the track wherever you want a marker. I line up the photos I want to use in an album in iPhoto or Aperture, and drag the whole album in. Everything should snap to the beat markers.
Here is another good sample video using beat markers from ldparkinson...

  • Setting Duration of Photos (still clips) in iMovie '11 Does Not Work

    Howdy -
I realize there are already similar posts to this one, but so far as I could tell, most of them involve (& focus on) transitions, whereas my issue is strictly with setting the duration for which a photo is held in iMovie.
Effectively, I am trying to get a 'stop motion' feel from iMovie. I deselected the auto-apply 'Ken Burns' to all photo imports in the project preferences and figured I would edit the photo duration afterwards, given that the shortest possible duration in the project preferences is 1s, which is much too long. That is where I run into trouble: the "duration" field is acting up a great deal - sometimes it won't even respond to my entering different numbers, other times it will. Sometimes when it does respond to my typing numbers, it won't let me type anything in the decimal position. When it does let me type something in the decimal position, e.g. 0.2s, when I hit enter, it re-sets the time to 2.0s. I've tried different formats for entering time (0:00:2; 0:00:02; 0,2; with & w/out 's' etc) - all to no avail.
I'm very curious to know if anyone else has reported this problem, & if so what the solution is.
In case anyone else is having this problem, I did find a workaround:
         1. Import your photos as necessary
         2. Select one photo and manually crop to desired time scale (e.g. 0.3s)
         3. "Trim to selection"
         4. Select that same clip & bring up the window for editing the duration, check the "apply to all stills" box.
         5. voila - amazingly this works.
Although this is a perfectly easy workaround, I'm a little disconcerted by the fact that iMovie won't repond properly & would be very interested to understand why.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Rax.

    Hi Rax,
This may not help, but in iMovie Preferences there is an option to display time down to the frame level. So, rather than entering time as a decimal, you enter each time component separated by a colon. So, 2.5 seconds would be entered as 2:15 - that's 2 seconds and 15 frames (for NTSC or 30 fps formatted video).
    See this screenshot:
As I mentioned, this may not help. At times I've also had trouble adjusting the duration of stills, even though I have my preferences set to display time at the frame level. Transitions can cause issues with stills duration. In most cases, a transition can be no longer than half the duration of the shortest clip on either side.
Notwithstanding the transition methodology, my feeling is that there is a bug in iMovie that causes problems with stills duration in certain circumstances. This applies to both iMovie '09 and iMovie '11 (also possibly '08).

For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Hey Villiam,  Kevin is referring to setting a movement on a photo setting keyframes (like zoom out to in), right-clicking on Motion, and choose save as preset.  This will put that movement into your presets folder under Effects.  I am going to try this on my next montage and see if I can find some efficiencies.  Thanks Kevin, that was a great tip!!!
Also thanks to Jim.  I spent like 30 min looking at all the keyboard shortcuts.  It's a little overwhelming to establish a solid shortcut format that a team of editors can learn and use.  I'm going to be trying the FCP short cuts, then go back to the default.  It looks like the PR default has a lot of existing and helpful shortcuts assigned already.  It's just going to take getting used to a new platform.
I'm still looking for tools and/or methods to allow an editor to assemble a 60 second montage with 10 photos, VO and music in 30 minutes.  It's going to be a challenge but I think it's possible with the right innovative process.  I'll still challenge anyone to find a way to quickly assemble a montage in an assembly line or template-based fashion using Adobe Premiere CC where there's on-screen text, advanced transitions, timed to VO, etc.
I think I'm dreaming for a tool to automatically do this within Premiere, while I think the answer for now might just be customizing motion presets and creating a favorites folder of transitions that can be dragged onto each clip.  I'll see if there’s a way to apply a set of transitions or motion presets to a series of photos on the timeline opposed to doing it one by one.  I can see this solution being important as video montages are becoming more popular in our industry, and the faster we can make them using a professional software package like Premiere the more prosperous we will be.

  • Do photo filenames repeat themselves when taken on my phone

I have a situation where the photos are backed up on a time capsule. Photostream is on as well. When I select a photo I want to see it picks up another photo leaving me to believe the filenaming of the photo may repeat after 9999 photos. Can anyone confirm this? Also if I have 5 years of photos on my phone how do I selectively delete them in bulk if I only want to keep say 1 year on my phone but archive the rest.
    Thanks

These pics are not of the sync process at  all.
As the manual explains, you import these as you would with any digital camera.

I use photo stills in my iMovie. I want them to last longer than a minute, but when I input 1:45:00, to signify one minute and 45 seconds, it doesn't accept it. What's the proper way to input it?

There are 30 frames in one second of video. So you can specify down to the frame level, which is 1/30th of a second.
Is the Duration box switching to some other time every time you type in 1:45:00?
For instance this is a 5 second clip plus 3 frames. To get this set properly I would type in 1:45:00, then click done. I don't know if it is different under older versions of iMovie, as I'm using iMovie '11 for thisi example.

  • Creating a photo from video in imovie

Is this possible? At my sons 1st bday someone took video of the cake but no one took pictures, doh! Can I create a photo from the video in imovie? If so, how do I go about doing this? Thanks...

    Here is an easy way.
    1) Start a new iMovie project, with a name like "photos from birthday party".
    2) Go to the EVENT for the birthday party. Move the cursor so it is at the frame you want to make into a photo.
    3) Right-click, (or control-click) and select "Add still frame to project"
    4) Repeat step 3 as many times as you want to add additional photos.
    5) Now, in the project you have creates, right-click (or control-click) on one of the photos. Select "Reveal in Finder"
    6) A finder window will open showing the jpeg file you have created. Right-click and select COPY. (Note you can copy all the photos at once if you like)
    7) Create a folder on your desktop called something like "Temp folder for photos from iMovie". In this folder, right-click on a blank space, and select PASTE.
    8) Your temp folder should now have copies of all these photos. Select them all and drag them to iPhoto.

  • Problems "pulling" photos from iPhoto into iMovie....

I am trying to create a movie with a combination of movie clips from my DV camera and photos from iPhoto (on my G5, 2ghz iMac). Movie clips are no problem. The problem occurs when I try and "pull" in more than 20 pics or so from iPhoto. I am trying to "pull" them in via "Media" and then "Photos". If I try and pull in a bunch, say more than 20, iMovie quits and I have to start all over again. Is this a bug and is there any workaround?

I actually think this is one area where iMovie6 does a lot better than iM5. My machine used to choke all the time when I would try to drag a whole bunch of photos into timeline. The reason is that whenever you bring in photos like that, they have to be rendered, so trying to render a whole lot of stuff is going to be time dependent based on your processor, memory etc. (and the settings you have for timelength, ken burns effect etc.) iM5 tried to render everything simultaneously and would always lock up on me. iM6 appears to render one at a time so it eventually finishes, but then I stopped trying to import large bunches of photos after my iM5 experience so I can't say where the limit is.
I've gotten so fond of playing with the ken burns effect and setting the start and stop points that I pretty much do all my images one at a time now because it can render the last one while I'm picking settings for my next one.

  • How do I move photos from iphoto to imovie trailer?  It says just drag and drop but it doesn't take them.

Macbook Pro imovie 11 trailer says to "just drag and drop photos" but it doesn't work????

You cannot put photos in a trailer. They are designed for videos.
However, there is a way around this.
Go to the Project Library view. Select your Trailer. Now, click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT.
    Now you can add photos.

  • Photo caching bug in iMovie 11

I ran into this today first time I have seen it. Wrong photo being displayed in Timeline. http://uimfaq.us/a5q3qA
Looks like iMovie will retain the last picture used even if you had deleted the previous project. Clearing the caches does fix it.
I will report this to Apple.

    Hi Daniel,
I'm not enabled to re-enact your bug ...
    Your screen-grab tells me:
    • you're using a template (which, btw?)
    • you did convert it into a 'Project'
    • you swapped windows to have a timeline
    • you tried to drag a Photo into timeline ... kaboom ...
but not here ... not a single zic ...
    plus, what caches?
Photos of a Project are stored in that weird 1fps-Still Images.mov inside that specific project. choosing a New Projects creates a new one - so, no 'cache', imho ( ? ) .
Or do you duplicate an existing Project to create a version B ?
please more info about your workflow in 'nano steps' , I'd like to understand your observation (have seen your video, that is obvious) ...

  • How can I import video and photos from iphoto to imovie?

Hi, I am having trouble importing media from iphoto into imove (imovie 10.5)
I am using a macbook pro 13 inch, early 2013 running mavericks.
I have created an event in imovies into which I would like to import both photos and videos from my iphoto library. However, when the import window opens, the list of options from where I can import has iphoto, but it is not clickable; I can not open it.
I have successfully imported from iphoto in the recent past on the same computer, but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong this time.
    Thanks for any suggestions

    OK, according to
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3290
your camera is supported by iMovie 9.  Perhaps the question is better asked in the iMovie forum.  Would you like me to ask a moderator to move the thread?

  • Photo booth effects in imovie

Is there a feasible way to use effects from photo booth in imovie? I would like to have the background-effect and use my isight-camera. There is no effect to choose. Unfortunately the quality is too bad if I record directly from photo booth. I did not found a way to optimise the quality in the application itself. Thank you for your help! I would like to use it for a project with my students.

Is there a feasible way to use effects from photo booth in imovie?
    Not directly from either app.
Here are a couple of alternatives you can consider:
    (1) Record the clip in Photo Booth (PB) using the effect you want. Then quit PB and launch iMovie (iM.) Import a copy of the clip located in your Home > Pictures > Photo Booth folder and named "Movie xx.mov" into iM.
    (2) If you have iMovie HD (before iMovie 7.x), record a clip and add Editing > Video FX after the clip has been recorded. These are not identical to the effects PB adds during recording, but they can approximate some of them on clips you have already made.
I suggest a short test first to determine whether you like what you can do before you record an entire project without knowing if you can approximate the effect you want.
