Photos - What Resolution and Format?

I've just got a 5G black Video iPod.
I want to learn how to make the best use of it's photo capabilities.
I'm quite techy and would like to understand what the iPod does with Photos for viewing on it's internal screen and/or for output to a TV. I understand that the iPod can make full quality copies of photos for archive/backup purposes. My questions are not about this particular function.
MY QUESTIONS
What's the ideal format for photos prior to importing into the iPod? (I'm guessing TIFF or similar uncompressed file format to avoid recompression artefacts as a result of the transfer to iPod)
What image format is used by the iPod. JPEG?
What's the minimum size (in pixels) for the source photos to still ensure maximum quality on the iPod.
I believe that the 5G iPod screen is 320 x 240 pixels. What resolution is the TV video output?
Does the iPod store 2 versions of each picture, one for it's own screen and one for the TV out?
If 2 versions are stored then what resolution are these images?
Is there any benefit in preparing images specifically for import to iPod to avoid any manipulation taking place during the import process?
Thanks for any answers or any other useful info on these issues.
Geoff

Barb,
Iv'e just spent the past 3 hours scanning these posts to see if there was an answer to my delima. I have a 5g 60g photo ipod that I purchased for the sole use of down loading and viewing photos. Among the numerous issues I have already- Ive just directly down loaded a batch of pics from my camera. In this batch was a variety of .JPG and .TIFF files. Only the .jpg pics show up on the ipod. The .tiff pics show up as squares with RAW in the description. I think from this post you are saying that the ipod will display many forms of pic files including .tiff format. Please tell me what to do to make these show up. I would hate to think I just dropped $300 plus to NOT be able to download and view these pictures. I shoot primarily in the .tiff mode Thanks for your help

  • Anybody know what resolution and KBPS quality apple use in their SD movies?

I want to digitize some of my movies into the MP4 format so I can watch it on my apple tv.
this is mostly children tv (thomas tank engine and so on). problem with dvd's is that we need to change often and they get worn. children do change their mind very often.
so, a digitized version in my Apple tv would be nice.
    I Use DVD FAB 5.
but when it comes to the kbps setting what should I choose?
I think that I can use the same setting as Apple them self. I bought walle movie and that was 1.1 GB and had very nice look.

anybody know what resolution and KBPS quality apple use in their SD movies?
They are generally encoded at 1500 Kbps for video and 128 Kbps for audio and a resolution of 640 x 480 depending on the aspect ratio.
The ToU of this forum forbid discussion about circumventing copy protection, so I'm not willing to comment on the rest of your question.

  • HT202856 What resolutions and refresh rates does the MacBook Pro support?

Why does this article provide lots of useful information EXCEPT the piece I want?  It does not show what resolutions and refresh rates the MacBook Pro supports over Displayport:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6008
I've heard it only supports 4k at 30 Hz.  Is this true?

For some reason Displays no longer shows that information, so I don't know what it is. However, the last time I saw the information on a 2009 MBP it was 75.
I'd think there is a utility around that might provide the info like Display Maestro 1.1.7 or SwitchResX.

  • Max resolution and format for Apple TV from imovie and itunes

I use iMovie '09 to make movies from my HD 1920x1080P camera that I SHARE to mobile me, itunes and for use on Apple TV via itunes.
I am trying to figure out the max resolutions and formats.
If I SHARE from imovie with 960x540 it goes right into itunes and shows as an HD movie on the Apple TV
If i export from imovie in 1280x720p i can drag into and play from itunes however it doesnt show up on the Apple TV? i thought the apple TV supported 720p? is the format wrong? when you export it comes out as .mov and when you SHARE it comes out as .mp4?

I have been struggling with this for some time. We have great HD cameras, and fairly capable consumer grade video editing capability with iMovie; but we have limited HD viewing opportunities other than a computer.
Apple TV does play it in 720p provided you meet the specs below - perhaps your 720p movie exceeded these specs. You see, there is 720p, and then there is 720p with serious Mbps.
At least for me, when I export at 720p @ 5Mbps the viewing is jittery and not smooth. I guess it is too much processing, although it seems to work fine when it is a downloaded movie in HD, just not an iMovie production.
So, I just use the 960x540, which is clear and smooth, and wait for the day an improved Apple TV hits the market with the processing power to smoothly handle 720p and beyond. I have a big (100") screen, so I can use all the resolution I can get to keep that large of an image sharp.
The alternative is to use a Mac mini and route through HDMI to your TV. That does a good job but is more expensive (triple) the ATV.
    Video formats supported:
    H.264
up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 1280x720 @ 24fps, 960x540 @ 30fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    MPEG 4:
    • up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 720x432 @ 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file format

  • Any ideas what resolution and size images I should ask for advertisers?

I plan to work on iPad android and PDF interactive.
What resolution and size images should I ask to advertisers?
    And video size as well.
Would be full page, half page, 2/6 page, 1/6 page.
    Anyone has experience in this?
    Thanks !!

Thanks I already put practical approach to the situation:
I noticed when an image with a size 1024 x 768 pix at 72 dpi was used to make a folio, the resolution result was bad.
What turned workable was to ask for full page: 13.5 width by 17.5 height in inches (and yeah with 72 DPI), then when adding the image to the folio the quality is very good.
The rest of the sizes were the result of using percentages with the basis 13.5x17.5 inches

  • Powerpoint (PPT) to PDF - Loss of Resolution and formatting

    Currently using:
    Powerpoint Mac 2011 14.4.7
Powerpoint for Mac Office 365 (2 computers here)
We currently have a PPT file of about 75 MB.
We would like to take the PPT file and make it into a PDF.
When we do so, via "save as PDF" or an online tool such as Small PDF, we lose resolution and in some cases formatting.
Is there a solution for this?
    Meaning:
Firstly a way to save our PPT file as a PDF without sacrificing quality.
Secondly a way to then minimize the file size to less than 5MB so we can comfortably send it through email.
I would be happy to share the file upon request.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Josh

I agree with kirbot -- Apple includes nice templates that are obviously meant for professional printing in reasonably large quantities. Regardless, there's no good reason I can think of why Pages' PDFs are not truly WYSIWYG in their output. That shadows and other things are not exported as part of the PDF is a really dumb idea on Apple's part.
Just ran into this issue myself and had to ditch all the drop shadows in my brochure in order for the files to work with my online printer.

  • What presets and format for sharing is best to use on HD project?

I have been working on a Premiere Elements project for the past several weeks, and it is my first, obviously.  I have spent many hours on the phone with Adobe techs and every one has said something completely different and contrary to what i had been told before.
    Several issues i have.
    1.  No one seems to say the same as to what preset is best.  I have taken the pictures from files from Photoshop from my DSLR camera, so i used the preset of DSLR [email protected] which i assumed was the appropriate to get HD quality of photographs of a special vacation.  There have been suggestions that i use a HDV preset instead.  What would be the right preset?
    2.   I completed the project, ending up with 45GB and planned to burn it to a blu ray disc.  As soon as i put in a disc and filled out the options, i went for a H.264 1920x108iNTS Dolby, and it said there was no media, in the share panel for burning the blu ray.
    3.  Then i tried to burn it to a windows folder instead, and used MPEG2 102-x1080i30 because i want to maintain as much HD quality to the photos as i can.
And 5% into the download, a pop-up appeared saying i was running extremely low in memory, and to save and proceed cautiously.  If i used AVI i assumed that would be standard videos.  I have a HP p6320 Phenom II x 4 820 Processor 2.8 GH, with 8 GB of RAM.  I have a TB of hard disk space and use Windows 7.
so now i have what i think is a finished project, and don't know how to get it the blu ray or a way that i could eventually get it to a blu ray.  So near yet so far!!!!
    4. The time to upload the project after rebooting etc. is taking longer and longer, now in the vicinity of 30-40 minutes.  What is causing this problem?
And i see 'Adobe Premier Elements 9 is not responding' more and more often, and the time with the swirling green circle  with 'wait for the program to respond' is becoming the regular occurrence rather than the odd happening.
What am i doing or what is going wrong?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Hopefully i have given enough information for some lights to go off?  Obviously i am a super novice, but i am getting very frustrated, with a project that started off being so much fun.  I would like to draw it to a conclusion!
    Ron

You do not select what kind of file you output when you tell PreEl to write a DVD or BluRay folder on hard drive for later burning to disc... the DVD or BluRay format is part of the specification
Put a Hollywood DVD or BluRay in your computer drive (stop autoplay when it starts, you don't want to play the movie) and then use Windows Explorer to go LOOK at what is on the disc
When you tell PreEl to write your DVD or BluRay folder to your hard drive, you will have the same file structure and file types as a Hollywood disc
You then use Imgburn to write that entire file folder to disc

  • Iweb:  photos blur?  and formatting question

Does anyone know how to prevent photos from blurring when you publish a page to dot mac? On my photo page, (only) 2 of the photos appear blurry. I have tried to re-publish, to no avail.
Also - is there any way to include column formatting in text? I am trying to post an opera resume, with various things in columns. It appears OKAY in iweb, but looks horrible after publishing. Should I just save the info as a pdf and then paste as an object?
    Thanks,
    Kathleen

I see now. iWeb does not do columns very well. In a text box it only recognizes one space between words as that's a HTML feature. You might try something like this:
    ROLES
Vitellia.....................La Clemenza di Tito...................dell’Arte Opera Ensemble
    Donna Annna...........Don Giovanni.............................Taconic Opera, NY
to get your spacing. If the dots are objectionable, select them and give them the same color as the background while leaving the other information white.

  • Photo resolution and jpeg size

Back in the early days of iWeb 1.0, there was a problem with uploading large (file)sized photo and the corresponding slow loading times for visitors to your site. If you used your original sized photos on a photo page, they would be displayed at 800px x 600px and could easily be over 500kb. The original photo, if memory serves me correctly, was still uploaded to the iDisk and acted as a drag of the whole website. Thus, the solution was to reduce all photos to 72dpi and size the photos for the photo page at 800px x 600px in Photoshop or a similar program. It also meant creating thumbnails for my blog page entries to be dropped into the placeholder photo box (reduce transparency to 0 - the thumbnail would appear properly on the blog summary page) and use a pre-sized photo for the blog page itself.
My question then is the optimal size for photos. Can one use original sized photos in iWeb 08 or does it make sense to continue to pre-process photos, reducing resolution and size? I guess this would not make sense for photos that you plan to make downloadable.
This discussion about color management I find extremely valuable, as I was always disappointed about how my site looked on Windows machines.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5249784&#5249784
Since I'm going to have to re-process the color balance of my photos when I rebuild my site in iWeb 08 (I believe its not possible to update my current iWeb 06 site for reasons I mentioned in another post), I wonder if I could use the original sized photos as is or whether I should reduce their size and resolution (most of the photos I've shot digitally are at 300dpi, I have also scanned all my old analog photos at 300dpi). Thanks!

I see I attached the link to the wrong discussion. It should have been this one. Scroll down to the workaround posted by Tomas, from August 26th.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1078666&start=0&tstart=0
Anyway, yes, that's sort of what I mean. On my iWeb 06 website, I've scaled all my pictures down to 800px x 600px with a resolution of 72dpi for online viewing. The original photos, say 3000px x 2000px at 300dpi, are simply saved on my harddrive and not used in iWeb. The thought behind that was for faster loading times for people visiting my website. I'm pretty sure when I saved these reduced copies in Photoshop, the default color profile was sRGB. However, when I look at my site on my office (Windows) PC, the pictures appear dark, especially Black & White ones. But the color profile is a separate issue covered in Tomas' workaround.
Now, maybe I'm operating on a false assumption, but I thought with this new download feature in iWeb and .Mac Web Gallery you would want to use your photos in full resolution so that when a visitor sees a picture they like, they can download the picture from your site AND could even print it if they so chose. Again, I'm assuming you would use your full resolution photos when you build your site and iWeb would do its own scaling for viewing on the web, but the full resolution photos would be somehow held in reserve for the moment when someone selects 'download'. I'm just concerned that using an unscaled, full resolution photos, would slow down the page building speed so much, that visitors would be too border to bother waiting for the pages to load. Thanks.

  • Hey I want to know what resolution a personas 3000x 200x is because I am trying to make one, but the middle part of the picure is movin to the left so some thing is wrong with resolution and interpolation. PS, I use Gimp.

I use Debian and Gimp program to make my own personas but it seem like I have to know what resolution or interpolation is needed for the best result. I am trying to make one in size of 3000px wide x 200px high but don't know what resolution and interpolation is matching the requirements of Firefox or personas. For ex: in Gimp when scaling an image the interpolation possibilities are 4 like:
    None
    Linear
    Cubic
    Sync

  • What resolution do still photos have to be to be imported into FCP X

I am using stills in a video.  What resolution and what dimensions do they have to be before importing them into FCP X?

SSpatial conform sets how the media is sized when placed in a project. The help files and manual will the explain the details.
Sill till images are not video. They need to be rendered for true video playback. Set playback to best quality rather than better performance.

  • Choosing optimum resolution/file format

What I have seen about this has been incomplete and contradictory, so I will greatly appreciate your recommendation.  I have about 300 black and white snapshots of various sizes which I took while in the Army during World War II.  I want to scan them, improve them as much as possible with my PSE 8, and have them available for viewing interspersed with notes on my monitor.  They don't have any physical damage.  They are just faded and darkened by age, and some have other problems such as backlighting.  From what I have sen, I gather that I should scan them as color photos at 600 or higher resolution with no editing, saving them as BMP files.  Then I would use PSE 8 to make a PSD file for each, edit it, and then make a final copy of it in maybe JPEG format at ? resolution.  So my question is "how should I best choose resolutions and formats during the entire process?"

In my experience, scanning at 600 is satisfactory with my equipment. For printing, resolution of 240-300px/in is recommended.
You are about to embark on a major project. You may want to purchase "The Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration & Retouching Book" by Matt Kloskowski.
This is an older book, but the techniques described are invaluable. About a year ago I ordered a used copy from Amazon, but they sent me a new copy for a few dollars.

  • WHAT RESOLUTION TO MAKE LOGOS FOR IMPORTING

    Hi to all!
    I'm not clear on something:
I have a custom logo made with fonts in CS2. When importing this to FCP 5.0.4, to overlay onto a scene -- do you put the logo with the fonts on a transparent layer, flatten it, and then save at what resolution and file type?
I take it a TIFF would work or a PNG....but what resolution? And the color space I assume is RGB?
    many thanks!
    -TEXASFLOOD

Resolution is meaningless in video. You can create your image in any application at any size you want. Just remember your video window is a set number of pixels.
Flatten your image in PS to a format that includes transparency.
Know that there are pixel aspect ratio issues. Photoshop creates square pixels, video is rectangular pixels.
:Large section in the FCP manual on getting stuff form Photoshop into FCP but I haven't used FCPv5 or CS2 for many years.
