Photos with noise reduction filters applied shows too much noise in preview mode

The Noise Reduction filters do an impressive job in Lightroom, but the preview of photos when zoomed out is sometimes poor.
This becomes especially visible on photos with a high amount of noise reduction applied.
When zooming in to 1:1 I see that the noise reduction works as it should. Also when exporting the images the noise is removed as it should.
I wish the non-zoomed preview inside Lightroom was able to show the image with the noise reduction applied more correctly than in version 3.4.
I'm using Lightroom 3.4 64-bit in Windows 7.
See samples of image with heavy noise reduction applied in 1:1 screen shot, and then a unzoomed screen shot of the same part of the image. As you can see the unzoomed preview contains much more noise than the zoomed image does.

I've had to encode with no noise reduction which is a shame, but have to get this DVD done.
Any ideas for the next one?
Thanks
Mark

  • Why do my photos with my new cannon 7D have so much noise

    Hi,
We just got a new cannon 7D last week and took it on vacation.  When we downloaded pictures, they have much worse noise especially at low light that our old outdated rebel xt.  The pictures look ok at regular magnification, but when zoomed in they look terrible. I did not get noise anything like this with my xt.  I downloaded some as raw and some as dng and they look the same.  Even shots at 100 iso were quite noisy at 1/3 second.  We enlarge these and put them in a gallery and I suspect they will look very amateur.  I called cannon & they said to use their software to download the pictures, and that this image sensor is more sensitive so might pick up more noise.  I've downloaded thousands of pics with lightroom previously, so I don't think that's it & I know the image sensor is more sensitive, but everything I've read clearly says the 7D is a good camera and should have less noise than my old xt.  These are all tripod shots, mostly 100 iso & anywhere from fast shots (which are better) to long exposures in low light, downloaded to lightroom 4.
Has anyone seen this?  I have seen some posts about high noise with 7d at low iso speeds.
    Thanks

Ok, I've tried to attach some photos without luck.  I went to that adobe.com website to make a link like the help section said, but it says the site is under repair.  Is there an easer way? I couldn't attach them by clicking the camera icon either. The help section says I can't attach a photo to a post for security reasons?
Anyway, my concern is that in the past with pictures that looked even a little noisy with my rebel xt, if I would try to print them at even 16x24 through a professional lab with a calibrated monitor I could definitely see noise on the prints.  I've gotten very good pictures with my rebel xt just by using a tripod and 100 iso with almost no noise, so it's hard to wrap my head around the fact that when I see alot of noise in a magnified picture that I won't see it on an enlarged print.  I do noise reduction in LR4, but it makes all the edges less sharp, so there is a trade off. My understanding is that you are supposed to zoom to 100% when doing noise reduction to see the effect.  I feel like I should have to do much less noise reduction with a 7D than a rebel XT.
    Thanks for all your input

Canon support suggested it might be because I had the "Auto Lighting Optimizer" feature set to "Strong".  I didn't even realize that setting existed, but I change it to "none".  Unfortunately, I haven't had a blue sky to photograph since I made the change, so I can't tell yet if it helped.   Is that what you mean by High Tone Priority, or is that a different setting?
    Hi,
Auto Lighting Optimizer and Highlight Tone Priority are useful functions, but it's very likely to get noiser images (in dark areas) if you enable any of them. Especially if you had ALO set to "strong".
Shoot the same scene with and without any of those functions enabled and you'll see the difference.
When they're well used they can give you great result, but you have to be careful to avoid excesive noise increase in dark areas.

  • SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS SHOWING TOO MUCH CPU USAGE

I Have problem with system idle process showing too much cpu usage.but the process is normal.nothing more else.my laptop is toshiba satelite pro m300.pls give the solution as earliest as possible.

Without knowing the excat model or what software, hardware or external components are running CPU usage is just an average measurement.  If you have alot of background components/software running can cause a high reading, as it you allowed updating to runn consistently, or IM Messenger to consistently gain access.

  • Is your superdrive making too much noise?

i'm just a bit concern when i play dvd on my new powerbook, it is making too much noise. sometimes it fails to play the dvd because of scratches(which i can't see it at all). my computer would stuck at the same image for about 3 minutes or more and i have to force the computer to shut down by holding the startup button. there are times when it would not eject the dvd out as well. any opinions? just quite frustrated. thanks

I am suffering from part of the problems you mentioned.
The SD itself is not noisy when DVD are playing.
But after pausing the movie, then it fails to resume with really strange noises (as if the head was "bumping" on the disk). Then I cannot eject the disk (the drive will apparently loop on noisy attemps to resume), and I have to reboot the PB.
I am also suffering for very frequent "disk rejection" (disk ejected after load without it appearing on the Finder), not only with DVDs, but also with regular Audio CDs (including clean unscratched ones)

  • How do PS CS3 Noise Reduction Filters compare with dedicated third-party plug-ins?

Am I missing something by not installing a dedicated Noise Reduction application into my PS CS3? Can Neat Image, Noise Ninja, Noiseware Pro, etc. do something that the PS CS3 Noise Filters can't do? Do these third-party aplications do it better?
Since I like flashless photography, and I generally carry with me small-sensor compacts when I travel, I'm frequently confronted with the problem of digital noise. I've always wondered how the third-party noise reduction applications perform in comparison with the Photoshop Noise Filters. I hope someone in this Forum has been able to acquire direct experience on this topic and will be kind enough to share this experience with us.
    Kindest Regards,
    Conrad

    Conrad,
ACR 4.3 has better NR (noise reduction) than previous versions and can handle NR in most normal situations. However, available light photography with a small pixel sensor may require more NR and the specialized plugins such as Noise Ninja, NeatImage, and NoiseWare Pro can do a better job. I have all three and they do an excellent job, but I currently use NoiseWare most of the time.
Here is a demonstration of NoiseWare vs ACR NR, using 100% crops of an image taken with the Nikon D200, 1/320 sec at f/2.8. The image is reasonably sharp at normal viewing conditions, but has quite a lot of luminance noise. It was rendered with ACR and the settings were exposure +0.85, brightness +60. One thing you learn early in this type of shooting is to expose to the right to reduce noise, but this may conflict with stopping action and reducing camera shake. More exposure would have helped this image, and one should try to avoid exposures requiring this amount of positive exposure adjustment.
The results are shown below, followed by some discussion. Other comments are welcome. Color noise is not prominent in this image and I left color NR at its default.
    ACR, No sharpening, no NR
ACR, Luminance NR 53, no sharpening
ACR, No NR, No sharpening, NoiseWare default, no sharpening
Noise reduction and sharpening are antagonistic processes. It is important that NR is applied before sharpening--you don't want to sharpen noise. Following NR there is an inevitable loss of detail, and some sharpening is necessary to restore the detail, but this also brings back the noise. One can use masks and blend if sliders in Photoshop in both NR and sharpening to mitigate some of these effects, and Bruce Fraser discusses the details in his excellent book on sharpening.
If you use an add on such as NoiseWare, you should turn off luminance sharpening in ACR. In doing so, you lose all those nifty sharpening features that have recently been added to ACR. I leave color NR at the default. It has a minimal effect on detail.
In adjusting the NR in ACR at 100% viewing, I estimated that a luminance setting of +53 was optimal. Beyond that, blotchy artifacts appear in the image.
For NoiseWarePro, I used the default settings with no sharpening. The NR effect is dramatic, but detail is lost and some sharpening is needed. This could be applied in NoiseWare or in Photoshop, perhaps with a plugin such as PhotoKit Sharpener. Personally, I have found that PK does not work well with this type of image because it bring back noise and produces artifacts.
In all of these examples, sharpening is needed following the NR. One could try to use surface masks to keep sharpening in Photoshop with the unsharp mask away from the edges. However, I find it is difficult to get a good surface mask, and I don't take the trouble.
For now, I use the sharpening built into NoiseWare. I don't know how it works internally, but it does have a slider for detail protection, and you can play with this to get the best result. It would be best to have the robust NR of the add ons built into ACR much like NoiseNinja is built into Bibble Pro. However, this is an ACR forum and I would expect that ACR is the preferred raw converter of those who frequent this forum.
After expending this much effort on the post, I hope to get some helpful feedback.

  • "noise reduction" not applied to exported photos

I've always used iPhoto to slightly modify my photos, before exporting and sharing or uploading to Flickr.
But, since yesterday, the exported photos do not include my "Reduce Noise" modifications. When I export them, they include the color, retouch and so on, but they look as they were BEFORE I applied the "Reduce Noise" filter.
When I look at them in the browser, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I press space to see them zoomed, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I double-clic to switch to edit mode, they appear WITH noise reduction.
And when I export them (either by dragging and dropping to the desktop or an application, using the export function or opening in an external editor), they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
I have tried to delete the preferences of iPhoto, but the behaviour of iPhoto remains the same.
This applies to all the photos I've tried it onto. And this never happened before yesterday.
I didn't install anything new, I have no plug-ins or things like that. I've repaired the permissions, even restarted and zapped the PRAM. The only thing I've done recently is install Aperture with the 30 days trial offer. Could this be the origin of the problem?
iPhoto is an important tool for me and has always worked perfectly. I hope someone will help me solve what is a big problem for me.

I sent to the trash the iPhoto preferences I could find and launched it again
This time, I got the same behaviour, but also got console messages, as follows:

  • Noise Reduction Filters????

Does anyone know of any effect audio filters in FCP-HD that will help reduce the amount of background noise in the clips?

For an "intelligent" noise reduction based on a noise print you need to go outside to Soundtrack or other audio apps.
Depending what the noise is, there's a lot you can do with multiple carefully set up Parametric EQ filters. If you have a very fine single frequency-based noise you can find the frequency with a Parametric EQ, then use it in "Hum Remover" to reduce the harmonics as well.
A different approach is to apply a noise gate.
Some combination of these, all used VERY GENTLY, can take the edge off most background noise and bring it down without too much damage to the sound you wanted.
I really really wish someone would make a noise reducer plugin that would work in FCP. I hate Soundtrack trips.

  • Noise Reduction wont apply to track

I am having a rather difficult time getting a audio track i have sent from FCP to play nicely in soundtrack. I sent the audio file from FCP as a audio file project, it opens up, i set my noise print, and adjust the reduction accordingly. Then once i try to apply the effect it will act as if the reduction action was applied but it doesn't actually apply to the track. I did select the area i wanted it to affect and i get nothing. I tried to save the reduction as a Script and apply it to the track in FCP and i end up with the same result. The part that is confusing me the most is if i select the Reduce Noise from the action list and play the track through the reduction hud it plays correctly it just wont apply to the track. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I am running SoundTrack 2.0.2 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5

Hmm, this might sound obvious, but did you "Save" the audio file project after applying the noise reduction filter? You have to save the project before it will update in FCP. Also, after you apply the filter to the file, the noise reduction should show up in the actions list, before you save and flatten the project.

  • Noise reduction not applying to beginning of clip

There's a bug in Premiere Pro which results in the hiss reduction or certain audio effects not being applied to the first 2-3 seconds of audio when exporting.
After looking this up on the Adobe forums I found other people with the same issue, and they were advised to edit the audio in Audition and reimport into Premiere Pro. I am having the same problem in Audition however.
I capture my noise profile, apply the adaptive noise reduction (or dehiss or whatever) and the audio sounds fine in the program. But when I export the first 2-3 seconds have the original hiss and you can then hear the effect kick in.
Can anyone help?! I offered to start doing video for my work and this is driving me up the wall.

Adaptive Noise Reduction is just that - adaptive.  It identifies sources of dynamic noise over time, then reduces them.
If your clips don't have a few seconds before the in-point with which to apply the algorithm, you can often just copy/paste a few seconds at the beginning of your recording, run the effect, then delete that section.  Dropping a marker after you paste the selection (while it's still selected) will make it simple to select that range again for deletion.
Otherwise, you might want to try the more manual NR tools.  You'll have more control over what's identified as noise and how drastically it's reduced, and can make several light passes for better results.

  • Noise reduction - RAW fine tuning and the Noise Reduction tool

    Hi,
1- If I get it right, Aperture's RAW fine tuning "Automatic noise compensation" (translated from French) option uses the camera's information to adjust the noise. Is that correct?
2- The Noise Reduction tool is there to provide additional noise reduction, but this makes you lose some details. Is that correct?
3- How do you use them? I often find the Noise Reduction tool a bit overkill, but that's me.
4- This one is just out of curiosity. How does A3 compare to LR3 beta for you in that regard? In my testing, LR3 did a slightly better job (but A3 totally beats the crap out of LR2 for noise). BUT I have an old D50, and newer cameras handle noise better (especially Nikon), so does it really make a difference for a 2008 or newer camera?
    Thanks!

I don't even have this option/checkbox in my Raw Fine Tuning brick.
I wonder if it's due to the type of files (Canon 7D). Do you still have those 7D files I sent you? Does the checkbox appear in Raw Fine Tuning for you with them?
I noticed this option in the manual the other day, but forgot about it until now.
True, it doesn't have the checkbox with the 7D files. However, it as a slider "noise suppression" (again translated) in the RAW fine tuning options (and still has the Noise suppression brick).
If you don't have this one too, have you reprocessed your images with Aperture 3? Since it has a new raw engine, it may be the cause of it.
I find it strange that Apple didn't tout the new RAW engine on Aperture 3 new feature, it clearly is an improvement over Digital Camera RAW 2, especially in noise suppression.
I agree the built-in noise suppression is much better than A2, but IMHO it pales in comparison with the Noise Ninja plugin from Picturecode. The key is that you calibrate a profile for Noise Ninja by shooting a color chart full screen on your computer at varying iso settings with each of your cameras. You then feed the images back in to Aperture, and tell Noise Ninja to create a noise profile for each setting. The results are amazingly good.
Now with a lot of new cameras, noise processing is getting less important because the high iso performance is so good....but this is what makes Noise Ninja special...even when the noise adjustment is subtle, because it is working from a profile created with your camera, at the iso the shot was made at, its effects are seamless. They just announced a 64 bit plugin for Aperture 3, so no bouncing into 32 like other plugins at the moment...
    Sincerely,
    K.J. Doyle

Hi! I'm working on a track with a few synth layers from my korg and other audio etc.. it sounds perfect in logic but like sh*t as mp3.. i tried turning normalize on and it just made it really quiet so i went to amplify it in audacity and it brought the noise back in.. without normalize its good volume but with noise and i also put adaptive limiters on a bunch of the tracks which didn't do much.. id REALLY appreciate if someone could suggest some solutions! either with getting rid of the noise for when i bounce it, or a good way to raise the volume of the track when i bounce it with normalization on, mostly since i can turn up the volume on my computer and theres no noise but amplyifing it in audacity produces noise.. probably cause it messes with the frequencies or whatever i dont know haha but ok yeah thank you for reading! please help!!

    1. You can post images (PNG or JPEG) directly to your thread here.  Many people cannot or will not follow external links to look at images.  Use the Insert/edit image button in the toolbar at the top of the edit window.
    2. There are on-line tutorials which will help you get started with LabVIEW.
    3. What part of those signals is noise and what is real force? Turbulence, vibrations in the device, and other things could make all of this real.  How are these signals measured?  Do you have any kind of signal which can be used to synchronize with the motion of the wing?

There is no relationship between sys.dm_exec_query_stats and

sys.dm_exec_sessions shows the "aggregate performance statistics for cached query plans in SQL Server 2012"
