Photos with Sony HC-1

With the still photos being recorded onto the memory stick in 2.8Mega pixel in high definition, is there a difference in still picture quality compared to a SD video camera taking a 2.8mega pixel photo?? Cheers

As promised..
This is a relatively quick'n'dirty test, as I had SO much more to do today (..you can see by the progression of the watch-hands how long it took, plus writing it up..)
I've compared the best stills from the HC1 camcorder, a Fuji 3 megapixel stills camera, a Canon D300 ('Digital Rebel'), an Olympus E500 (..the Canon and Oly set to low resolution, to near-enough match the Fuji and the HC1..), a Sony 3-chip PDX-10 camcorder with a Memory Stick in it for stills, a Sony 3-chip TRV950 camcorder [..virtually the same as the 'professional' PDX-10..] and a Sony 1-chip Digital-8 TRV330 camcorder.
I shot a wristwatch on a table, in front of an open window, with sunlight coming in behind the watch, to give an idea of how good the various lenses are, too: cheaper lenses with fewer anti-reflection coatings within the zoom mechanism can bounce light around between the lens elements (bouncing back up to 2% of incoming light between each piece of glass or plastic) giving a much softer, less contrasty, 'weaker' and less clearly defined image.
I had to move most of the stills cameras closer to the watch, as although the Fuji has a 6x zoom, stills cameras generally don't have the longer zoom range of video camcorders (10x for the HC1, 12x for the PDX-10 and TRV950, 25x for the TRV330). This ensured that the size of the watch face stayed fairly consistent through all the pictures.
I opened up the apertures, or increased the 'backlighting' exposure in all pictures, so that the watch face was sufficiently bright to be seen against the backlighting, and this also gives a rough idea of how well each lens and imaging system gives a sharp image devoid of 'colour fringing' and other failings. (I used a 55-200 zoom on the Canon, as its usual 18-55 lens would have meant moving the camera too near to the watch to give a reasonable match to the other images).
The 1-chip HC1 shoots with 2m effective pixels in 16:9 and 2.7m effective pixels in 4:3 mode, as it uses the full height of the chip as well as the full width. In 16:9 mode it shoots 1920x1080 pixels, in 4:3 mode (which I used for these comparisons) it shoots 1920x1440.
The 3-chip PDX-10 and TRV950 shoot approx 1.07m effective pixels in hi-quality photo mode. The 1-chip TRV330 shoots approx .8m effective pixels in photo mode.
(I couldn't shoot any stills with the HC1's "big brother" 3-chip FX1 camcorder, as that doesn't shoot stills.)
[As a final test, I held a Leitz 90mm lens ..from an old Leica stills camera.. in front of the Olympus to see what kind of picture that excellent prime (i.e; not a zoom) lens would produce. But as I couldn't fit the Leitz lens deep enough into the Olympus body to focus at the appropriate distance, I had to move the camera and lens much closer to the watch to get a sharp image. This nearly filled the viewfinder, but I've included this and the cropped-down central area, just for a very rough comparison. As so much light flooded in around the lens itself, I used "auto levels" in Graphic Converter to reset the brightest and darkest areas to their optima. These "Oly-Leitz" pictures show some camera shake, as I was holding the lens in place by hand. All the pictures, with each camera, were taken in 'self-timer' mode, to avoid camera shake.]
I cut out from each picture the watch face and its immediate surroundings, and I also saved each full picture at a reduced size of 15% of the original ..to give an easy comparison of the relative sizes of the overall shots.
I used 'spot metering' on all of the images to get a clear watch face against the bright background, and then - as the watch faces were still dark - I used manual over exposure to get a clearer, brighter watch face. The Canon shots have still come out rather dark ..my fault. So I adjusted the 'levels' on the Canon shots to 'brighten' up the watch face more, and I've called these shots 'Canon crop2' and 'Canon 15pc2'.
All the series of photos are available from here onwards..
Of all of these pictures, the HC1 has given the largest shot. But don't forget that I scaled down the size at which the digital stills cameras took their pics, to get as near as poss to the HC1's 2.7 megapixel size. The best, or most pleasing, overall shot ..except for the Leitz fixed focal length lens (which was nearer to the watch, but which wasn't even attached to the camera, but just held in front of it against the lens mount!).. seems to be from the HC1, if you disregard the bluish colour fringing produced by shooting into the daylight.
So in this extremely rough-and-ready test, pitting movie cameras against stills cameras (which were set at small pixel counts), in harsh conditions (against bright sunlit backlighting), using a variety of different lenses, I'd say that the HC1 comes out pretty much at the top of the heap for detail, contrast, sharpness - though it does have that severe colour fringing at the top of the case, against the light ..as also do the other Sony movie cameras, especially the 1-chip TRV330.
Here's the original HC1 shot:
Here's the same HC1 shot, with its levels slightly tweaked in Graphic Converter for good brightness and contrast:
Here's the similar shot made with a Leitz (Leica) lens attached to an Olympus E500 digital camera body (also tweaked in Graphic Converter):
Here's the 3-chip PDX-10:
Here's the similar 3-CCD Sony TRV950:
Here's the single-chip Digital-8 Sony TRV330:
Here's the Fuji S602Z 3 megapixel stills camera:
Here's the Canon 300D ('Digital Rebel') stills camera ..slightly tweaked in Graphic Converter:
And here's the Olympus E500 digital stills camera:
I didn't have any other make of movie camera - no Panasonic, JVC, Canon, etc - to test against these Sonys. Sorry.
I saved a version of the cropped HC1 picture, with auto-adjusted contrast/brightness levels as "HC1 crop1L" (and the 15%-sized picture as "HC1 15pcL") and the adjusted picture probably comes closest to the Olympus pic taken with the Leitz lens ..except that the Leitz picture was taken from about three feet (1 metre) away, and the HC1 picture was taken zoomed in from across the room.
So, all in all, Yes! ..The HC1 takes very good stills pics, as well as glorious HDV hi-definition movies. (But its movies are 'grainier' and less quickly focused in low light indoors, than the much bigger, more expensive and cumbersome, 3-chip FX1/Z1.)
..And all of the rest of the pictures run from here to here.
[..Now going off for a cup of tea..]

  • The Mystery of the Duplicating Photos with Varying resolutions and Sizes by Sony Z1 Compact

about the duplicating photos with varying resolutions and Sizes problem... I have a band-aid fix to this without deleting everything in your  phone. What you do is to find time to actually MANUALLY DELETE the extra photos. Don't delete it by Taping on the Album app and deleting everything on the home photos.
Instead tap the album then on the UPPER LEFT CORNER (If you've updated the albums) tap the 3 bars beside the album icon to access the album menu, then tap the FOLDERS choice.
You should see alot of folders with Thumbnails named with numbers and different resolutions. Delete all the folders labeled as Thumbnails or cache. *note that you cannot delete whole folders but the folder gets deleted automatically after all the contents inside it is deleted
Afterwards, go to your phone's settings->App-> Album
Then tap the Clear Data button
    After that restart your phone.
This actually "fixes" the problem for a while but usually after a few restarts or Phone charge the folders comeback and you have to redo the whole process again. But the folders that are made becomes fewer than the 1st occurrence of this problem and deleting the photos shouldn't take as long as the 1st.
Honestly i think this is definitely an Application bug and should be fixed by Sony, since you know its their built in app for Multimedia

yea that also helps since it's a bug caused by the new update. I'm just waiting for Sony to fix the bug, i don't really mind deleting the thumbnails

How do i open a photo taken with sony P1 camera saved in DSC format on a CD?

The P1 looks like a high end video camera not a still photo camera to me and DSC files appear to be support files not photo or movie files
Why do you think that you have photos in a DSC format?
You might give Google a shot and see what you can find but it looks to me like you do not have either image or video files but supporting files - and if you have video files you may have to use iMovie - it is much more robust at working with videos

  • Xperia Neo media server doesn't work anymore with Sony Bravia TV after ICS update!

Xperia Neo (MT15i) updated from 2.3.4 to 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.431). I did not perform any reset (factory settings) after the update.
Media server does not work anymore with Sony Bravia TV KDL40-NX700. With 2.3.4 it worked correctly before.
When I start the media server on my Xperia Neo and try to view my photos on my Bravia TV it shows connection, I am also able to view different folders on the Smartphone but when it tries to load the photos in any folder on the Smartphone it stops working after a while. Feedback on TV is "cannot connect to media sever". The same procedure worked without any problems when using 2.3.4 before.
Is this a known issue and is there any solution for this?

Wow that is a new one, great find!
I wish I had tested that with my Ray, as I had used the media server feature quite a bit with my DirecTV receiver when on Gingerbread.  But too late, it's on the way back to Sony to get rolled back to Gingerbread.
Too many other problems with ICS that have crippled my device.
    1) Wi-Fi Hotspot does not work anymore
    2) USB tethering does not work anymore
    3) LED notification issues for incoming SMS
    4) Dialer slow to load
    5) HD Video recording skip frames and jitter.
    6) Bluetooth AVRCP profile broke (can't use the play/pause button on my car stereo anymore)
If you have not done so take a look at the above features and see what you turn up.

  • Mountain Lion doesn't display Finder preview icons for .ARW files? (RAW pictures taken with SONY cameras)

This is something that I find rather ridiculous, and have a hard time believing no-one at Apple has addressed yet.
Basically the problem is that neither Mountain Lion nor Lion show Finder thumbnail preview images for pictures that are taken with SONY digital cameras.
This is something that Snow Leopard, as well as multiple earlier iterations of OS X used to do without any problem. The professional photographer community who uses SONY professional DSLR cameras is up in arms about this. And we've all been crossing our fingers that perhaps the Mac OS X 10.7.1, 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4, or possibly the 10.8 update would fix this issue for us.
Several of us have filed bug reports over the past year or two. See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213982?tstart=0
This is a flaw in Apple's operating system. Especially considering that there are supposedly 200+ "new features" which were just released in Mountain Lion.
Those of us who work with SONY cameras every day would probably have paid the $19.99 upgrade price for just one "feature". And not even a new one. An old one. The ability to see our pictures in the Finder. Pretty basic stuff.
Hopefully someone fixes this for us with the release of Mac OS X 10.8.1
    Please. And thank you.

I can see image icons for all my pre-MtLion images.  These are the folder images (Icons), and all the photo images (icons) on all my hard drives.  IE If I have a folder of 300 wedding pictures, they all show the picture image above the file name in the icon view.  So if I want to open a picture of the "Flower Girl" I can see the image (icon) of the Flower Girl.  Without the image showing all I see is the filename...  Smith-212.tif.  Now with Mt. Lion I CAN'T see any IMAGES (ICONS) on any of the 300 photos.  Just the file names in all the different views.... Icon View, List VIew, etc.  If I have a Folder with 23 more folders inside, they don't even show up either.  I saw a step by step process of selecting the file and right clicking on it and opening it in Preview, then doing a copy and then pasting it on the original image in tghe get info window.  WHAT A PURE PAIN TO HAVE TO DO THIS TO 170,375 IMAGES.
The other issue I have is that 93.5 % of the remaining icons that do exist on my system is that those 93.5 % are so pixelated they appear as a hugh checkerboard viewed through two inch thick glasses..... not for drinking, but the kinda glasses used by a blind man.  IE the remaining icons are so PIXELATED it is almost impossible to tell what they  are.
BEN WELLAND...... What did you do to get this point?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to whomever at Apple finally fixed this.
After updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, SONY .ARW files (and I'm assuming Pentax .PEF files too) now render proper thumbnail icons in the Finder in list view, icon view, coverflow view, and columns view.
Since this is now a recognized bug, I'm guessing that the free update to Lion (10.7.5) that Apple also just released yesterday (September 19th, 2012) will probably fix this issue too.
    Hooray!
I have OS 10.8.2  and nothing has changed as far as being able to see photos / folders as image icons...
    rendered  proper thumbnail icons.
I have thousands of photo files that show nothing other that the file names.
The only way I can even see the file is to open it in Photoshop, or open the folder in Bridge. Even then after I open it in PS CS6, and save it again. It still is a "Empty" file...... no render proper thumbnail.

    Any help will be appreciated.

  • How could I Import RAW  photos from sony A300 into Lightroom 1.4.1?

How could I Import RAW photos from sony A300 into Lightroom 1.4.1?
RAW photos files in sony A300 are saved as "*.arw".
    any one can help?

This is well known bug. One day Adobe will recognise that with the best live view system (A350/300) and best usability (A700) they need to take the Sony DSLR's seriously.
Use the Import function, but use "choose files". Your CF card (in Camera or reader) will just be another drive. Navigate down to the folder with the pictures - control+A, choose selected. Then choose copy to new location and import (safer than using move).
Don't forget to tick the backup box.
    Hope this helps. Peter

  • How to make 8MP photos with Superior Auto in Xperia Z1?

    Hi all
I bought the Xperia Z1 mainly for the camera, but I am not satisfied with the results. In articles like the one linked here, it states that "Sony has wisely set the Z1 to take 8-megapixel oversampled photos by default".
    http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/30/4784014/sony-xperia-z1-review
Though,in superior auto my Z1 takes photos with 5248 x 3936 = 21 MP!  Could that be a reason for the poor image quality and how could I in that case change this setting without going to manual mode (there I already changed it).
Thanks in advance for your support!
    Dan.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi again
I have now first tried clearing the data/cache, but no change. The I repaired the phone (loosing all settings done), but it is still the same. The pictures made with "Superior auto" are of 21MP and around 7MB big.
I also found a colleague that got her phone at the same time and for her it is the same, i.e. the pictures made with "Superior Auto" are of 21MP and around 7MB big. She had though thought that this is how it was supposed to be.
So the question remains. Do I need to send the phone for "repair" or is this acutally the way it should be?
Are there no other users on this forum that could clarify this?
    The way I do it:
    1. Start the carmera app.
    2. Choose "Superior auto" if not already done
    3. Take the picture
    4. Open the picture with "Albums"
    5. "Options" -> "Details"
    6. States"Width: 5248" and "Height: 3936" (i.e. 21MP)
    Is this correct or not?
    Thankful for any answers!

    Hi Gabshow!
Sorry to hear that it didn't solve your problem.
Can you please send me the error logs so I can
provide them to the development crew.
Here’s how to get error logs from Sony Bridge for Mac:
    1. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the "Phone" menu. Select "Clear logs" to remove all old logs and get a clean start
    2. Reproduce the problem you're having, whether it's connecting the phone, importing photos, doing backup...
    3. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the ”Xperia” menu. Select "Export logs"
    4. On the computers desktop there should now be a file named "SonyBridgeForMacLogs_[date].zip

  • The new Ipad and camera connection kit with Sony A65 RAW

    Hi,
I recently purchased the "new ipad" with camera connection kit. I'm shooting photos in RAW format with Sony A65 and I have succesfully transferred them into my Ipad. The problem is that none of the applications such as Snapseed, Photoforge2, etc. will display the full 24 megapixel image from the RAW file and will instead show small preview.
It is indicated in support pages of these applications that there should be support for IOS Raw engine supported RAW files with full size. Can someone indicate me what RAW formats are supported by IOS 5.1 and whether support for Sony RAW files will be added.
The same problem persists with 16 megapixel images from Sony A55.
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you, David, but actually your answer is not helpful. As I explained in my opening message, I am interested in buying and using an i-Pad while on a trip in Spain, where I will not have access to a computer, other than, perhaps, one at the Apple Store where I might buy the i-Pad.

  • Photos from sony phones

can anyone explain why( on bluetooth) I cannot receive photos from sony phones yet i can receive music files from them. I can send them a photo but cannot receive ( even if its the same photo) yet if the photo is send from a sony via another nokia to mine it will accept it. Bye the way I have an N95 with built in 8G memory

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

Would someone be able to explain to me the following issue with Iphoto?

How can  I fine this "corrupt" photo? How did it go thru with the first batch of calendars but won't go thru now?
    Thank you for your help.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Hi!
When I import photos with iPhoto, sometimes it imports them with wrong dates, even the dates are fine on the camera. It puts dates such as 2032. Does anyone know how can I fix that. As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.

well that is very confusing since if the date is correct on the camera it will be correct in iPhoto

As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
Try looking through your iPhto menus - two commands - adjust time and date and batch change time and date - asjust is used to correct incorrect dates like a comera setting -   Batch change for missing dates like with scans

  • How do I take 300 dpi photos with my iPhone 4s? And how do I export them to my MacBook Pro at 300 dpi to use as I want to print photos.

How do I take 300 dpi photos with my iPhone 4s?
And how do I export them to my MacBook Pro at 300 dpi to use as I want to print photos.
I have been using the standard camera on the iPhone and require 300 dpi to create photo books as the photos are resized according the layout.
Your time and assistance in appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Tonefox!
After looking at a few of the links I found a mathematical equation that assisted me.
    Inches = Pixels/DPI
    eg: 3 inches = 300 pixels/100 DPI
Using this equation and the fact that iPhone 4s takes photos that are 3264 x 2448 I was able to work out the largest print I could make with 300 DPI.
    Width 3264 pix/ 300 DPI = 10.88 inches
    Height 2448 pix/ 300 DPI = 8.16 inches
Therefore, the largest print (with 300DPI) I can make of these photos is 10.88 inches x 8.16 inches.
    Which is great!
So is it critical for me to change the dpi in say photoshop or does it not matter as long as I don't go above the 10.88 inches x 8.16 inches?
From what I can gather the smaller I resize the photo the higher the DPI and the bigger I stretch the photo the lower the DPI?
Further clarification will be much appreciated. Thanks

I am looking to share my photos with other family members who have iPads. How can I "publish" photos that will sync to multiple devices over WiFi?  In other words, I want to push photos of my children to their grandparents (as simple as possible for the grandparents)

Wifi will only work if they are al on the same wireless network.  An easier solution might be dropbox.  You can post your pictures there, share the link with anyone who you want to see the pictures, and they can bring them onto their machines.  This will work with family members who do not have pads, on any device that can acccess the web.
I believe you can set up an account for free.
