Photoshop 3d obj interacting strangely with other layers

After Effects and Photoshop CS5.
I have an imported photoshop 3d object which on its own behaves as it should.
But, when I place it in front of other layers (2d in 3d space) I can see the other layers through the photoshop 3d layer. They are all behaving in space as they should, apart from the fact that the photoshop layer seems to be made of glass (which it isn't).
I can't for the life of me work out what I am doing wrong.
Apart from this, I can't get shadows to work in this comp, where in another comp which is exactly the same apart from the imported PS 3d object, they are working fine. (If I hide the PS 3d object, shadows and lighting work fine with the rest of the objects)
Or is all of this impossible because I'm using a PS 3d object?
I would be grateful for any ideas, because I am totally stumped.

Well, you completely misunderstand how this works, I'm afraid. PS Live 3D is merely an intra-layer effect and does not in any way interact with AE's own 3D beyond responding to the camera. That's no differtent than using 3D-ish effects like Trapcode Particular - the effect may look 3D, but is applied to a 2D layer. And that also explains all your otehr issues - any form of 2D layer inbetween 3D layers breaks 3D rendering order. You need to re-structure your project by splicing the stuff to separate comps and cross-linking the cameras to get the illusion.

  • Does Safari support a interactive PDF with hidden layers? I'm on version  5.0.3 and the interactive PDF displays just fine, but our web development team tells me all the layers display when they view the same PDF on Safari.

    Does Safari support interactive PDFs with layers? Through the use of hidden layers and buttons we built in interactivity that allows the viewers to click on buttons to display different content. When I view the PDF in Safari 5.0.3 on my Mac OS 10.5.8 the PDF displays fine and the interactivity works. However our web design firm tell me the PDF displays all the hidden layers when they view it in Safari. Who's right?

    Try updating your Safari to the latest version, 5.0.5.
    Also check whether the rest of your system is up to date by going to Software Update in the Apple menu.

  • Using Javascript to rasterize a layer and maintain its position with other layers.

    Trying to use javascript to rasterize just the contents of a certain layer by its name.
    It needs to maintain its position.
    I've sort of cobbled a script, but it keeps moving the rastered art to the top layer.
    Ex, top down i have Layer 4, RasterizeMe, Layer 2, Layer 1.
    The rastered contents end up on Layer 4
    Any help would be apprecieated, or if theres a better method of doing this.
    //  Rasterize Layer by name
        if ( app.documents.length > 0 ) {
            doc = app.activeDocument;
            if(!doc.saved){
                Window.alert("This script needs to modify your document. Please save it before running this script.");
            }else{
                createRasterLayer(doc);
        }else{
            Window.alert("You must open at least one document.");
    function createRasterLayer(doc){
        var totalLayers = doc.layers.length;  //get the total number of layers in the active document
        for ( var i = 0 ; i < totalLayers ; i++){  //looping through layers
            var currentLayer = doc.layers[i];
            var tempItem;
            if(currentLayer.visible == false) continue;   //We don't want to deal with hidden layers
            currentLayer.locked = false;                       //Unlock the layer if needed
            var layerName = new String( currentLayer.name );
            if ( layerName.indexOf("RasterizeMe") == 0 ) {
                currentLayer.hasSelectedArtwork = true;   //Select ALL in the layer
                if(doc.visibleBounds[2] == 0) continue;   // ignore empty layers
                var newoptions = new RasterizeOptions;
                newoptions.resolution = 350;
                if ( doc.selection.length > 0 ) {
                    newGroup = app.activeDocument.groupItems.add();
                    for ( z = 0; z < doc.selection.length; z++ ) {
                        doc.selection[z].move( newGroup, ElementPlacement.INSIDE);
                    doc.rasterize (newGroup, newGroup.visibleBounds, newoptions);

    you're adding the group to the document, it will be the top most object on the top most layer
    newGroup = app.activeDocument.groupItems.add();
    use this to add the group to the current layer
    newGroup = currentLayer.groupItems.add();
    or if theres a better method of doing this.
    I would
    - loop through all layers,
    - hide them all, except the one you want to rasterize,
    - Rasterize the document
    - unhide layers

  • How do I resolve issues with missing layers when opening a Tiff file from Photoshop CS5.1?

    I am downloading Tiff images from a partners website. After extracting the file and opening from Photoshop CS5.1 it's only displaying one of the original image layers. For example and image with two guys shaking hands in an office is only opening the clipped two guys and not showing the backgroud. The vendor says the files open fine on their end which leads me to believe its a download or photoshop issue. Any recommendations?

    Thanks Curt... I don't think my explanation was clear. I'm downloading an image from an external webiste. The image downloads in a ZIP archive. After extracting from the Zip file, I go into photoshop and do file open. Only part of the image appears. It looks as if it's the top layer of a photoshop image but since I didn't build the image, I'm not certain it was built with multiple layers. Any ideas?

All seems well but I still can't see the text that I write. Need help trouble shooting. (I asked this question about a month ago but I got sidetracked and never circled back.) Thanks.

    1. Pre-select (highlight) the layer to move in the Layers panel.  or-
    2. [ALT+Right mouse click]  to select the wanted layer in the image window.
    and maybe
    3. Set the PS option to "Auto-select" a layer with cursor hover.  (can be very confusing!)

  • Unlocking Background Layer with lots of other layers

    I've been looking at the similar questions, but no script has worked perfectly yet. I have a series of phoshop actions that I run on a regular basis. I have two version of each, one for if there's a locked background layer, and one for when its already been unlocked. Otherwise my actions error.
    I'd like to simplify the process and have a script run that finds any locked layers (ie: background) and unlocks it, even if there are 15 other layers and even if I have another layer selected. It should also run without errors if there are no locked (background) layers to be found.

  • How do I subtract the shape of a layer (a scanned shape) from my other layers - but when the shape hasn't been drawn in photoshop

    Im trying to subtract a shape I have previously painted and scanned in from my other layers...can this be done?

    If this is the effect you want, add a white bottom layer, and create a mask of the heart art to drop it out of image layers
    or... do  you want color only in the heat shape and the rest of the page white?

    So I cannot scan my pictures, help.  Windows 8.1 with HP Officejet 6500A Plus printer.  Scanner works with other programs in my PC.  Problem is PS12

    I bought the Officejet 6500A Plus about one month and have experienced the very same problem. I tried to remedy this problem following suggestions in a number of different posts (static IP, router, firewalls etc), all to no avail. Last week I called support. The support I received by the tech over several hours and different days for a week was very good. However none of his suggestions corrected the connection issue. After today's recommended fix failed, he advised HP is aware of this issue with the 6500 and other affected printers. He claimed HP was working on a firmware upgrade. He did not know when the update would be provided. The tech also claimed HP acknowledged this problem in a written announcement. He agreed to email the announcement to me. I haven't received it. This has been the only problem I've had with the 6500

  • Photoshop 3D OBJ 8 Material limit

    There seems to an 8 material limit to importing OBJ formatted geometry.   I did a few tests and anytime my OBJ file contains more then 8 materials, photoshop seems to not recognize it properly.  It would consistently load the OBJ file with a single material where all of the UVs seems to be merged into this single material.  When converting it to a 3DS geometry, Photoshop loads the geometry with more then 8 materials but still less then the amount of materials there should be? Plus the material/mesh names are modified? When converting the geometry to the COLLADA (.dae) format, I get the correct number of meshes in photoshop but only a single material.  I have not tried the U3D or KMZ formats.
    I created 2 separate geometries (one with 2 materials and one with 8 materials) load them into a photoshop file as OBJs and then merge the layers together.  I was then able to get 10 materials in 2 separate meshes)  But it had some undesirable results where the did not reside in the correct worldspace to one another.  So while trying to fix the material limit issue, I discovered another issue.
    Cheers,

    Hi Chris and Pete,
    Thanks for your response.  So you know, I am evaluating Photoshop3D as a
    texture workflow solution to potentially replace our other texture paint
    program at my studio.   The 8 material limit is a major issue.  Since it's
    for feature film, our studio generate hero level geometry with upwards of
    hundreds of materials groups to preserve resolution.   Our characters and
    props frequently require high resolution texture maps. If there has to be a
    limit to the number of materials that can be loaded, can this be an
    adjustable value under preferences.  So users can define it.  As it is now,
    I cannot get around this issue outside of dissecting my geometry into parts
    with only 8 materials each to load and paint in Photoshop.  Ideally, I would
    like to import a prop with over 200 materials to load 4K maps onto each one
    to test how well Photoshop can handle the quantity and size.  This will give
    me benchmark comparisons to working in Mari and BodyPaint.
    I appreciate the help.  I look forward to the responses.
    Cheers,

  • Photoshop: Making a text box with color or border.

    How do you fill a text box in Photoshop?
    Answer: You CAN’T.
    Solution:  You CAN do anything you want in Photoshop -we know it’s GREAT - but the steps are not always so easy.  See below for solutions to making it seem that the text box is filled with color, bordered, semi-tansparent etc.
    In Photoshop, a text box is mostly about the text inside and less about the box that surrounds it.  In other words, the box is always transparent and all effects apply to the font shapes typed inside by the user.  Photoshop (CS4) can produce incredible, professional, amazing text images. No Doubt About It!
    A Photoshop text box can display one of two types of bounding boxes:
    Its OBJECT bounding box is there for moving the whole text layer, rotating it, duplicating it and distorting.  Clicking once on the text layer pallet and selecting the move tool (v) will produce this bounding box.  The direct selection tool (a) won’t recognize it.  Note:  If you try to resize the box as an object, it also distorts/stretches the text inside.  This can make cool effects but usually you want the text to stay the way the font was designed.  See: Layers>Type>Warp Text.
    The TEXT bounding box is there for highlighting, re-typing and selecting the margins of the actual text/paragraph etc.  Selecting the text tool and clicking over existing text will produce this bounding box.
    Some features are accessible in either mode.
    The Photoshop text tool has two types of cursors:
    The NEW text box cursor looks like a text insertion cursor (often seen in word processing) WITH a dotted box around it.
    To produce the new text box cursor just select the text tool and move over to a new work area.
    The EDIT text cursor looks very much like the ordinary cursor people are familiar with (no dotted box).
    To produce the edit text tool, hover the text tool over EXISTING text and the cursor changes to the simple insertion shape (without the dotted box).  A click now will put you into text editing mode, not new text box mode.  This drove me batty for a while because I was used to clicking anywhere inside an existing text box and the blinking cursor would pop in automatically - usually at the end of the last letter.  This doesn’t happen in Photoshop; if that NEW text box tool is active, it will try to place a new box anywhere you click sometimes overlapping another.
    When in this mode (edit existing text) you can carefully hover the arrow to the edges of the text box and resize the bounding box without altering the shape of the text itself.  This is how you make the text box larger or smaller to fit/accommodate your needs.  You can also highlight text, insert between words/letters.  Highlighted text is available for changing its font, color, size, cutting/pasting etc.
    To get OUT of the EDIT text mode, click the check box on the tool column above or type enter (not return) or type cmd-return (MAC), ctrl-return (WIN).  If you want to cancel any changes to an existing text box click the ex-circle on the tool column or press the esc key (top left of keyboard-escape key)
    OK, THE MAIN POINT:
    To make an effect that looks like a text box that is filled, bordered, semi-transparent etc., you will have to create an object shape (box) and place it just behind (under) the text box.  Linking the two allows you to move them around easily.  The drawback is that, when you need a larger box, you’ll have to alter the size of both boxes and possibly re-center them to each other (I know it’s sort of dumb to have so many steps just to get a shaded text box or bordered one.)
    Begin by selecting the Rectangle shape tool and draw a shape on the screen of any size.  In the layers pallet a layer is created with two items (layer thumbnail and vector mask) Double click the one on the left the layer thumbnail).  Change its color to a light one such as baby blue or yellow.
    Now select the text tool and click once over that shape.  A text box is created exactly the same size of the rectangle (any shape will work too).
    Type some text into that box and change the font type, size and color to something you might use regularly.  Check to see that the text color is black (can be changed later).  The text automatically wraps around when you reach the edge of this box and fits well (inside margins can be altered by pixel later).
    Now link the two boxes to one another.  Shift-click each layer in the layers pallet to select both and choose the link button at the bottom of the window for layers or go to Layers>Link Layers.  Now when you move one it will move the other too!
    Using the paragraph tools you can center text, indent first line, and add space between paragraphs.  Except the first paragraph seems too close to the top of the colored rectangle; doesn’t it?  Photoshop won’t add extra leading (horizontal space) between the text box and the top of the first paragraph.
    There are two ways to fix this:
    1.     Select the text tool and click inside the existing text then hover the pointer just above the little box/tab in the top center of that rectangle and bring it down just a bit.
    2.     Or you could unlink the two layers (to unlink just click link again while one of the two layers is selected in pallet) and move the colored rectangle up just a bit.
    In the first instance it was not necessary to unlink the boxes.  This is the advantage because altering the colored rectangle without unlinking will distort your text as will altering the text box if you are not in object text mode (see intro.)
    Ok, some advantages:
    Now that you have this set up you can use the background box (colored rectangle) to make other effects.  Select it as a separate layer but you won’t have to unlink it.  To make the box semi-transparent change either the layer OPACITY or the layer FILL (found in the layer pallet).
    To create a border box:
    1.     Select the colored rectangle box and under Layers>Styles>Blending Options (or just double click in an open area of the layer pallet for that shape.)
    2.     Select Stroke, change:  Fill Type color, Color black, Size 4, Position inside, Blend Mode normal, Opacity 100%. Click OK/Apply
    3.     Back in the layer pallet, change the Fill to 0% and you will just have a border with attached text box.  You may have to alter the inside text box again depending on the thickness of that border especially if you made the Position to be inside to keep the sharpness of the rectangle.
    4.     Yes this will work with other shapes and even custom shapes.  Remember to draw the shape first and immediately place a new text box over it BEFORE any other alteration is done.  This ensures that Photoshop creates a text box exactly the same size/dimension of your chosen shape.  It even makes margins fit irregular shapes like triangles.
    5.     Try it!

    5.     Try it! Or try using Indesign!
    There. I fixed that for you.
