Photoshop 5.0 Won't Open

Suddenly my Photoshop will not launch. The main screen opens and will not build at all. I have an old version - Photoshop 5.0 and I have Windows XP vs. 2002 with service pack 3 on a 3 year old Dell with Pentium 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM. These are the steps I have taken: delete the Preferences file, disk clean and defrag, and system reset back two weeks. I also tried creating a new user account and logging on and launching on that acct - did not work.
Finally I decided to try uninstall and reinstall and then discovered that there seems to be no way to uninstall. If I go to Control Panel, Photoshop is not even listed on my currently installed products even though it shows my Adobe Flash Player, Reader, and Page Mill. I checked in the folder where it is installed and there is no uninstall program. I have noticed one strange item - each time I try to launch and then do Ctrl, Alt Delete to get to the Task Manager I note that Photoshop is listed TWICE in the applications list. Could it be trying to launch two versions at once?
I'd appreciate any assistance - launching or uninstalling.

Update:
The solution I came up with works well in WinXP!
Here are some additional tips for you:
1) Boot-up/Restart (warm or cold) into your "Photoshop" user account with the clean desktop.
2) Open Photoshop 5.0, and keep it open in this account.
3) 'Switch' back to your regular user account (don't exit the Photoshop program, nor close out the "Photoshop" user account).
4) Don't install or load any other programs to your "Photoshop" user desktop, except the Photoshop.exe shortcut.
You can switch back and forth between your regular and Photoshop user accounts at will.  I've had Photoshop 5.0 open continuously for several days in my "Photoshop" user account, and switched back and forth several times to my regular user account (the very one that I sent this message from!).
If you close Photoshop 5.0, or log-off your "Photoshop" user account, you may have to restart your computer (#1 above) to gain access to the program again.  You will know, because the original problem will reappear, i.e., the Photoshop gray interface will show up on your screen, but the program will not load.

Jon

  • New Camera RAW in Photoshop CC 2014 won't open multiple Panasonic RAW (.rw2) at the same time from Windows Explorer.

New Camera RAW in Photoshop CC 2014 won't open multiple Panasonic RAW (.rw2) at the same time from Windows Explorer.  If I select 2 raw files and click "Open" Camera RAW will only open 1 raw, then when I click "Done" it will close and open the second, sequentially.  Previous Photoshop CC and RAW worked fine, it would open mulitple RAW at the same time.  How do I fix this?

If it worked for you that way previously there isn't much to comment about. I just tried opening multiple images from Windows Explorer with Photoshop CS6 and Camera Raw 8.6, and the first image would open and when I clicked cancel then the second image would open. But if I wanted multiple images opened in Camera Raw to work on them simultaneously it was necessary for me to open them from Bridge. I just did it as an experiment because I normally use Lightroom. Anyway, IF it was a feature at one time to work as you described, it doesn't seem to be that way now.

  • I use a Nikon d610 and my Photoshop Elements 10 won't open in camera raw. How can I fix it? The camera version is 6.7.0339

i'm using a Nikon D610 now and Photoshop Elements 10 won't open files in camera raw. How can I fix the issue? The version of camera raw is 6.7.0339

    Hi,
The D610 requires camera raw 8.3 which is not compatible with your PSE 10.
You need to upgrade to PSE 12 (or later) or use the free Adobe DNG converter. The converter will take a flder containg your NEF files and converte them to DNG files. The DNG files can then be used by PSE 10.

Thank you PatriciaBruhn unfortunately the error is a bit generic.  The best I can offer would be for you to try the steps listed in Troubleshoot system errors, freezes | Mac OS 10.x | Adobe software - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-system-errors-f reezes-mac.html.  These are generic troubleshooting steps and are great when the exact cause of the problem is unknown. I am not sure if the time and effort of going through the steps will be useful though as you may still run into difficulties.  I might also suggest trying Photoshop Elements 10 - http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements.html or Photoshop CS5 - http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html and seeing if either one of those fit your needs.  Depending on what you use Photoshop 7 for you may find that Photoshop Elements can do the job plus have additional capabilities not even thought of during the time of Photoshop 7's development.  Both Photoshop Elements 10 and Photoshop CS5 have a minimum system requirement of 10.5.8 so as long as your system meets the remaining requirements then they should work fine on your computer.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 won't open any files, not even create new ones

I have a freshly installed version of Photoshop CC 2014 and it just won't open any single file no matter what I do.  I also have Illustrator CC 2014 installed for the past week, and it is behaving fine, and even opening up the files that Photoshop won't open (jpg, psd, png, etc.).
I've tried uninstalling completely, and reinstalling it, and it still won't open any files.  Basically, nothing happens after I click the "Open" button from the Open File dialog window.
I've also try resetting my user preferences using this video tutorial, and it also didn't resolve the problem: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html
Has anyone else experienced this or can give information on how to resolve it?
    Thanks!

Well, I finally got it to work through trial and error.  Here were the steps that I used to get it to work:
    1) Make sure that you are not behind any firewall/VPN/etc, just a direct connection to the internet (if possible).  I use Adobe for my work laptop, and I was informed that this could potentially be an issue during installation processes.
    2) Uninstall Photoshop via the Creative Cloud application interface.
    3) Right-click on the Creative Cloud icon from the system tray and "Quit" (it was automatically started for me from a previous bootup)
    4) Right-click on the Creative Cloud desktop icon and choose "Run As Administrator"
    5) Re-install Photoshop
After performing the above steps, I can now open any png/jpg/gif/etc file, as well as start a new file.  I have no clue why it works or if my steps played any role in fixing it, but I thought it was worth sharing for others to try if they encounter a similar issue.  It could be either the firewall I was behind, or the permissions (I don't think Creative Cloud boots up running as administrator).  But I am in no position to say I know the exact resolution.  Hope this helps!

  • Why photoshop cs5.5 won't open on yosemite?

I have photoshop cs5.5 (installed on a macbook air running on yosemite), it had been working perfectly and suddenly it won't open. I get a message: "install flash player" (already done, as well as having installed the java se6 /2014 runtime and installed and uninstalled photoshop itself several times) but the only thing I see is that never-ending spinning color wheel. I've been through many threads and forums but haven't found a solution to it. It's worth mentioning that it only happens with photoshop, as i'm able to work fine with other adobe apps (illustrator, in design, bridge, etc)
Does anyone know what might have happened and a possible solution?

Without proper system info such as what Mac and what version of OSX nobody can say much and the logs from your Log Viewer would also help. Well, whatever. As a start run teh cleaner tool and reinstal lthe software.

  • Photoshop CS 3 won't open Jpgs

I upgraded computers (now run leopard on a mac book) and therefore had to upgrade my Creative suite. Unfortunately, my Photoshop CS 3 is useless. Anything I create in it is, according to other programs considered an invalid file format that other systems won't be able to read and it considers all Jpegs that I try to open as invalid and gives me this message. "Cannot complete our request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." Eve those created in CS2
Any other program can open these same files, just not Photshop CS3. I haven't touched preferences. Is there something in there that could be causing this? Does hte program just not work? If not, is there a way to get rid of it without getting rid of everything else and put Photoshop CS2 back on? I'm not the most computer literate but this seems a very bizarre issue to be having.
    Thanks,
    Sarah

    Hi Barbara!
Thanks for the patience; I did succeed in creating a new account/admin. user, but I'm not sufficiently schooled in Mac procedures to know how to install PE 3 from that account. I did (again) delete the two files and the PE 3 folder, and reinstalled the program with the same result - it still won't open.
As a matter of interest, after completing the foregoing steps, I found the MS Word (from Office:Mac 2004) would not open, so had to reinstall that program; that corrected that problem. Have no idea what the connection is - if any between the PE 3 and Word problems.

I can't get the software to open.  I got "400 eror" message once.  Now I don't get anything.  I changed my browser to :http://www.mozilla.org/products,mfirefox/ (per a suggestion from adobe that I got on line.  I also tried to set up my computer to do a test toaccept cookies from another suggestion by adobe, but when I got to the site there was not test  That was http:///photoshopelementsuser.com/cookietest.php.  My sotware was installed 2 years ago when I got a new computer and I only looked at it once and it was OK.  Now I am trying to use it and it won't open. • Photoshop cs5.1 won't open pictures

For about a week and a half now I have been trying to open pictures in Photoshop cs5.1, and they won't open.  They are all JPEG files that I am trying to open, I know it is not the files especially because when I try to create a new document nothing comes up.
I would really appreciate an answer as soon as possible. -Thanks

First verify the image is fine, by loading the image in another image editor, there should be a free one included with your OS. If it can read the file with no errors and you can see the image, then the next step it to reset your photoshop preferences. Next is to update your video driver. Can other formats be viewed?

  • Photoshop Elements 13 won't open

I installed Photoshop Elements 13 but it won't open and I am not getting an error message so I don't know what to fix.  Photoshop tells me that sign in is required, so I sign in:
Then I accept the license agreement:
Then, nothing happens, the application does not open.  What do I need to fix?

a single user license entitles the user to install and activate on up-to two computers.  but that license doesn't really permit that 2nd installation to be used by another person.
so, if you son was the user on your computer he could sign in using his adobe id on your computer and use pse on your computer (as well as his own -  but not both computers at any one time).
if a 2nd user (you) wanted to use pse, they should purchase their own license.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 won't open

I had a computer problem and had to re-load all of my software.  When I reloaded Photoshop Elements 12, with the proper serial number, it opened and worked--but only one time.  Now, it won't open at all.  What should I do?

    Swapnil,
There is a cache which has the name C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache. It contains an SLC file with a long name (X19zbGN...), and a subfolder called SLConfigs, which contains a subfolder called V7{}PhotoshopElements-EMT12-Win-GM.  That subfolder contains one file called SLConfig.
If I rename the folder, which is presently named "SLCache", what name should I give it?
Also, the Program Files folder doesn't say Program Files (x86), it just says Program Files.  Is the (x86) part important?

  • Photoshop Elements 10 won't open once closed unless computer rebooted

On a Windows 7 64 bit pc if I close Photoshop Elements 10 it won't open again unless I reboot the PC.  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thanks.  That solution seems to work for me.  It's sort of interesting so'll I'll add some other notes for posterity.  I had set the Welcome screen to go directly to the Organizer.  So, I was skipping the Welcome screen but not directly through the shortcut as recommended by p.hotodrawken
When I open from the normal shortcut PE 10 spawns six processes:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoshopElements 10.0.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsOrganizer.exe *32
    PhotoShopServer.exe
When I shutdown by either File Exit or clicking the "X" these processes are left running.  If I manually kill the processes using task manager or reboot then PE 10 will restart.
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoshopElements 10.0.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopElementsFileAgent.exe *32
    PhotoShopServer.exe
When I open directly from the executable path fewer processes are loaded and they still don't all shutdown.  But, the organizer will reopen from the shortcut even if they're orphan processes are present.
    Startup directly to Organizer:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
    PhotoShopElementsOrganizer.exe *32
    Shutdown from Organizer:
    Adobe QT32Server.exe *32
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe
Thanks Ken for your help.  It will be interesting to see if Adobe fixes the bug.  But, I won't hold my breath.
    Steve
