Photoshop 5.1 Photomerge - eating up too much HD space

I am often photomerging large sets of RAW images (8 to up 30 images at a time).  Yesterday, I photomerged 25 images (each image is about 14MB) together.  Before the photomerge ran, I had 35 GB HD space available.  After the Photomerge finished and after saving it, I had 8 GB of HD space left.  The saved image was about 880 MB total.  Thinking the space would be recovered after I quit Photoshop and emptied the trash, I only had 27 GB of HD.
Therefore, Where did my 8 GB of HD space go?  35 GB to 27 GB, having saved a file that is 880MB.  After restarting my computer and verifying the trash was emptied, my HD space was still at 27 GB.

That's Photoshop's scratch files.  Close Photoshop and the space should be freed.  If it doesn't, next time you run Photoshop it should clean up.
But it doesn't, always, no matter how much Adobe claims it will.
If your Scratch Disks, as defined in your Preferences - Performance, start with your startup drive, look in your TEMP folder for these giant remnants.  If another drive, look in the root folder.
They'll have names of the form Photoshop Temp31713933688 (where the number will differ).  But they're hard to miss because of their size.  If Photoshop is not running you can freely delete these.
By the way, I did a Photomerge yesterday that used a total of 109 GB of scratch space.  I've seen it go as high as 200 before.
You might want to consider getting another disk drive if you want to do big Photomerges.  SSDs are dropping in price, and can make a GREAT scratch drive.

  • Compressor eating up too much cpu

    hi guys,
everytime i use compressor on my macbook pro i7 17 inch, my final cut gets very choppy as well as other apps running. I think its because compressor is eating up too much of my CPU power. is there a way that I can still compress stuff in the background while setting it to be using less CPU?
    Thank you

A reference movie refers to every frame of every clip in the project. If any of those clips are in use in another open application, you're going to see a performance hit of some kind. Try exporting your timeline as a self-contained movie first. There are reasons why reference movies are efficient, this may not be one of them.

  • When I print a Word document to a shared printer, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.

When I print a Word for Mac document to a shared printer (that is connected to my iMac) from my Macbook Pro, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.  I have tried to adjust the margins and the page setup settings but to no avail.  It used to print fine until recently.  Is there a way to fix it so that the printer prints what print preview shows?

I should add that when I e-mail this document to myself and print it directky from the iMac, it prints fine.

I bought too much cloud space how can I return it?

That's the number you want if you are in the USA.
You can cancel an iCloud storage upgrade but only within 15 days of buying:
Apple seem to have made this as difficult as possible. You may be able to do this using http://expresslane.apple.com -  click 'See all products and services',  then 'More Products and Services, then 'iCloud', 'Account and setup' then 'This topic is not listed'. Explain the situation in the box provided and wait for a response - include a phone number. However you may find you cannot proceed without entering a hardware serial number which is still eligible for AppleCare.
In that event you will need to phone them directly, using the Apple Online Store number given at the bottom of this page. The first person you speak to may tell you to do it from the iCloud website but this is not possible. Politely insist on escalating the issue to a more senior person and eventually you should be able to get through to someone who can deal with this (you may have to wait for them to call you back) - you will be asked security questions and for part of your credit card number to identify yourself.
If it is more than 15 but less than 45 days you may be able to get a partial refund by the same method.
If it is more than 45 days since you purchased the storage you cannot cancel it for a refund; you can downgrade your plan as from your next renewal date. Please see

  • Consuming too much temp space

    Dear All
A technical colleague of mine is executing a procedure which selects data from two databases and inserts it into the third one. The procedure is not new and he has been executing the same since a year now. However in past two weeks the procedure is either consuming too much amount of time ( 3-4 hours as against 10-12 mins ) or it fails as it utilises more amount of temp space on the database on which insertions are made. In the temporary tablespace i added about 10gb more but it is still not suffice for the procedure to execute successfully. The sga for the database onto which insertion is done is 2560M and pga for the same is 2G.
Please suggest what is to be done as it is an extremely crucial procedure.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    rdxdba

If you have Diagnostic Pack licence try to use AWR to compare instance activity for this procedure execution. If not try to install Statspack.
I recommend also to use SQL trace to have trace data for a "good" execution and for a "bad" execution and to compare TKPROF output for related trace files.
If you are using Oracle 10 or 11 try to use DMBS_MONITOR as described in http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/SQLTrace10046TrcsessAndTkprof10g.php.

  • Symantec antivirus eats up too much memory?

So I am gonna install a Labview program thats logs data and send the data by email, on a ship using satelite internet. If the sat internet fails, the emails will be store in the 2G memory of the PC.
So the customer IT guy ask will Symantec antivirus (which requires 2G memory according to him) eats up Labview memory, and cause Labview program to crash a few weeks later?
Have you guys have any bad experience with Symantec antivirus crashing Labview? Or Symantec's firewall blocking Labview email transmission and stuff like that?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You are confusing RAM with hard disk space. You would not store emails in the 2GB of "memory" of the PC. You would store the emails on the hard drive. It makes no sense to store in them in RAM, as that's temporary storage, and you'd lose it if the computer gets turned off or it reboots.
As for the Symantec issue, Symantec has its share of problems, just like every other atrocity that we otherwise affectionately know as anti-virus programs.  Symantec anti-virus, however, does not require 2GB of memory. Your IT guy, I suspect, probably despises Symantec products. As far as how much memory it actually requires, that completely depends on the version that you're looking at (including whether it's a "home" version, or a "business" version, or whether it's the standalone antivirus program, or whether it's the one that's included in the full-blown security suite).

  • Photoshop Elements 8 (and 7) crash too much in Windows 7

Photoshop Elements 8 and 7 have a terrible crash problem in Windows 7 and
also did in Windows Vista.  It seems to happen when going from the editor
back to the organizer (after an edit session).  Am I doing something
wrong?  This is a terrible problem.  I love the Photoshop Elements
editor and the organizer but can't stand this crashing!

    Thanks, Dean...
It looks like I might have found part of the problem.  I've followed some other advice on here on eliminating the welcome screen by using a short cut directly to the organizer.  However, it is more unstable for some reason when calling the editor from the organizer after loading it that way.
I went back and loaded the program through the welcome screen and it did much better.  That's kind of strange to me.
    Thanks for offering to help.

  • Eats up too much external hard drive space

I just turned on TM, and for no reason that I can think of, it's doing a backup that is eating up 34GB of external hard drive space. Here are my questions.
    1. Why might this be happening?
    2. What happens when external hard drive is full. What's the default move that it will make?
    3. How can I reduce the files that TM looks to back up. I need only ONE copy of my movies, for example. But I need frequent backups of my mail files. And for sure I need frequent backups of my doc folder.
    4. If I rent a movie on iTunes, will it be saved to external HD?
    Thanks...

I'm assuming the 34GB you mentioned is not part of the initial backup. If on an hourly backup it really is backing up 34 GB, then there is/are huge file(s) involved. Are you using Parallels or some other virtual operating system? These can use one huge file to store everything. Make one small change to it and the whole file is backed up. Same thing with Entourage or Outlook. These store all emails in one file. Add or delete one email and the entire file (which could be huge) is backed up.
You mention that you need only ONE copy of your movies. Well, TM does not make multiple backups if a file never changes. TM only backs up new files or those that have changed.

  • Safari eats way too much memory.  Can I curb its appetite?

This has been an evolving problem and I've solved it by moving to Chrome, but I enjoy using Safari, so I'm looking for a way to give Safari one last chance.
When I use Safari and open up Activity Monitor I can see three different processes for Safari:  Safari, Safari Web Content, Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in).  If I have many windows open with lots of tabs -- something I often do -- then that Web Content will go to upwards of 2GB.  If I leave the computer running all night, it will be on 3 to 4 GB when I go to use it in the morning.  Needless to say, Safari is very slow when that happens.
Chrome has it's helper programs, too, but they never exceed 100MB of Real Memmory.  That makes me wonder if something's not wrong with Safari that I can fix.
    Thanks,

Hi Linc, I know its a long time ago, but I came across your offer of scanning Steven's Terminal read out for a very slow Safari response .
Would you be willing to take a quick look at my readout as well ? (as I also am having similar problems) (  I have the latest updates for Safari and Mac OS)
    Many Thanks in anticipation

  • Time Machine Snapshots are taking too much HDD space

It has taken so far over 155 GB as you can see on this link.
    http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g445/comics_addict/ScreenShot2011-11-22at112 226PM.png
It appears under "Other" due to me disabling the snapshots on the terminal but unlike I read it still hasn't erase the items from memory.
    Any help?
    Thanks for your time.

Local snapshots are periodically condensed into daily or weekly snapshots to minimize the space used on your disk. If your disk is low on space, Time Machine stops creating new snapshots, and some or all existing snapshots may be removed to make space available for applications to use. If sufficient disk space becomes available again, Time Machine resumes creating local snapshots. This means your disk will have the same amount of available space as it would if Time Machine were not enabled.
OS X Lion: About Time Machine's "local snapshots" on portable Macs
    Disk Space considerations:
Local snapshots require space on your internal HD (and any other disk/partition that Time Machine is backing-up).  Time Machine will, however, delete some or all as necessary if it gets too full.  The exact criteria are not documented, but appears to vary depending on the size of the volume.  On a very small volume (under about 50 GB), it may be as little as 75%;  on larger volumes (1 TB or more) it may be as much as 90%.  This is doneindependently for each disk/partition.  Time Machine does not send any messages when it deletes snapshots.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
just replaced the 2 year old hard drive in my 24" iMac. restored from TC, roughly 120GB's. now TM wants to backup the same amount onto the TC. that led me to check the TC settings and found that there's already 250GB's currently being used. it should only be 120GB's which is what was on my iMac's hard drive before i replaced it.
No, that's not how Time Machine works. It doesn't just keep copies of the current contents of your system; it keeps "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, too. That, of course, requires additional space.
You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial
and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
how do i delete duplicate backups on the TC
You can delete individual backups, or the entire sparse bundle, if you really want to. See #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
and how do i keep my iMac from wanting to backup all 120GB's again?
You can't. It's a new drive, and Time Machine's whole role in life is to back up whatever's new: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
Connect via Ethernet for that, if at all possible. It will be much faster.

  • Libraries taking too much disk space

so I'm down to 30GB HD space left on my 500GB MBP. I know the risks and am seeing the performance speed effected. As I search through the sizes of folders/files at the finder level, my iphoto, itunes and aperture libs are the largest. I do a lot of photo work and don't really want to delete lots of images.  I don't know what to do. The other large files (short video projects, audio projevcts,  etc) are not that large (in the MBs) and deleting tons of small files won't get me to a good, safe un-used HD space.  Any recommendations?
    Thanks

To add to Allan's advice... I recently went through the same thing with my uncle's iMac - iPhoto, Aperture, and Photoshop.  I was able to move to an external drive all photos that he completed and only kept the one's that he is currently working on.  In moving 75% of the photos, I was able to clear 100+ gigs.
Also, as Allan pointed out, you can get a fw external drive that is less than a pound and about 5x3 inches and fits easily in a computer bag--no discernable difference in weight.
    Good luck!
